Walter Pandiani - Reply

Logged off for the last 30 minutes, now i logged in because i am going to drop a line in URUGUAYRIVER's report, please add to that if you wish.

For you doubt, here it goes: i IMPROVED the PC update by adding stats and a new date (SEGUNDA B season ended on 19 May 2013), as you very well know more than 50% of the WP users update stats and leave PC update the same (some even manage to severely crack me up, by updating goals and leaving games THE SAME!), so i reckon that's an improvement. I'm sorry mate, i just can't seem to bring myself to master the the correct PC/NT update approach, because i: 1 - find it strange to write a completely different date than the one of the last game; 2 - even if i wanted, i can't work with the four tildes to save my life :)

Happiest of weeks, cheers --AL (talk) 16:41, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

  • Yup, Pandiani's last game was on the 18th, but season was only finished 100% with the last games on the following day (19), so i rounded it up the following midnight hour (20th). I'm not a big fan of the 00:00 or the 22:43, but when they're there i don't revert. If not for the "clock" i would have written "Stats updated as of 19 May 2013". --AL (talk) 16:54, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

Maybe a poor attempt at comedy on my part, i'm afraid. If you decide to change/correct my Pandiani PC update, i know you'll do it better than me, so case can be closed. Happy vibes --AL (talk) 17:17, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

  • More in PC updates: in JULIEN FERNANDES, if writing "Why not 3 August?" is also a personal attack or similar (sarcasm is a negative input isn't it?) then i don't know what am i doing here on WP, and i REALLY don't understand your approach, yes it was a poor summary WP-wise, but it was no big deal; 2 - in DANI LÓPEZ, perhaps i should have written "minor in box" and vaguely wrote "minor in spacings" instead (if you notice i also removed the undue symbols in the player's CLUB NUMBER, hence you could say i "removed the SPACINGS"), i was not lying on purpose ("I correct these idiots and their PC update, then lie about that in my summary to avoid scrutiny)!

I told you yesterday and i told you before that if i'm not mistaken, i DON'T KNOW how to work with the four tildes so i write the PC update manually, and am mostly comfortable writing the date of the last game, that's hardly unconstructive or vandalic. If it was either i would understand your efforts to "mend my ways", that way i'm getting a bit puzzled.

Attentively --AL (talk) 16:44, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

  • P.S. i cannot provide a "proof" because i don't remember the exact article, but i once saw a guy update nothing in box (he edited in other fields in the player's article) and alter the PC update still. Where's the logic in that when a player DOES NOT PLAY? Cheers --AL (talk) 16:49, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

I'll try to comply from now onwards. --AL (talk) 17:03, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

No bother at all!

Ideally we should use ~~~~~ when updating to show time and date after a match. If a match is played on 12 July then that bare date is, as you rightly say, too ambiguous, and in the past has led to too many issues with well-meaning editors adding or taking away games and goals. However, if a match is played on 12 July and stats are updated on 13 July then I would say it's fine to use that bare date as it can be easily verified that the stats are up to the previous day's match - though in all circumstances the five tildes are prefeable. GiantSnowman 10:58, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

I've dropped him a message. Thanks, GiantSnowman 11:17, 12 July 2013 (UTC)
  • Greatly taken aback by your reaction, why? Because this attitude of yours is like saying "Oh AL just won't listen to me and/or he's doing it on purpose, he has to listen to Snowman though", when that's 100% untrue, i have the same respect and praise for you both. Don't know what was your goal with that message but, oh well...You also make it look like i was lying when i said in my original message about this "I'll try to comply from now onwards" (let's see if Struway shuts up about this after i soothe him, then i'll go on with my mischiefs) when i was not.

My defense and "posteriors": 1 - i repeat (i assume you read it the first time but i'll repeat it without the all caps, don't want people to think i'm shouting) i don't know how to work with the four tildes; 2 - i can offer this compromise: i'll start (from TODAY) adding the date of my edit in the player's infoboxes instead of the last game, that'll be the same as using the four tildes, or very very close.

P.S. the fact that my improvements (except the cases i which i replaced a date with one before that because the season was not being played then, in the light of the infobox guidelines then that has to be viewed as somewhat negative) can be deemed "concerning" with all of the ripe and sick and idiotic vandalism that stalks us on a daily basis really leaves me with my jaw dropped to the floor. I know you mean well, and are constructive in your approach, but (the "mean" part) so do i!

Cheers, happy weekend - --AL (talk) 14:19, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

And more i discover...User:Kengi1982 does not comply (no PC update, not even a wrong one like myself, recreates deleted articles, does not talk to anyone) and i get the scolding, like in Javier Patiño. Can i ask why please? --AL (talk) 15:33, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

Look, i am sorry for continuing with the undue use of rollback (i'll quickly admit it, i comply with less than 5% of the WP guidelines), but i say like you once said here (http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/User_talk:202.170.60.251), i too have assumed just about enough good faith, and this guy is being a real nuisance. What did i discover in Jesús Berrocal? His English skills must be very close to ZERO: he scored one goal and it's a brace, and a 2-1 win is a thrashing! How on earth are we going to get through to this guy and "not bite the newbies" when he will not understand? Cheers. --AL (talk) 15:52, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

Holiday

Haha, thanks - though I'd give everyone advanc notice, but I'll be gone properly (no access to any internet or e-mails, which will be a nice change) from about noon tomorrow, and should be back a week or so later. GiantSnowman 15:56, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

Fair enough but...

That discussion is two years old, and to my eye doesn't look conclusive. There's a possibility consensus can change. It also links to a different consensus established with different participants. I've written quite a bit about sourcing on Wikipedia so I know my way around the issue, WP:IS is one of mine and the requirement for third party sourcing at WP:V was my addition to Wikipedia. Putting all that to one side, however, what then would be the thinking on the Campana deal which os on the club website [1] but includes the quote "subject to Premier League and FA clearance." This would indicate exactly the same thing as the Advertiser quote. I'll rewrite the Phillips page to better reflect the source, and would argue that it should be in the article per WP:V, WP:RS, WP:NPOV and WP:NOR. No original research would be pertinent here in the sense that we would be second guessing what the source says. Hiding T 10:35, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

Cleanup

Did you not say you would leave some of my good changes? Because all of my edits made today have been restored back to Lemonade51's last edit on 1 July. I might agree that leaving just stoppage time is readable, but as for, in your own words, making the "edit window as readable", how are, just a few examples, Real Madrid C.F., 2006 FIFA World Cup, and West Bromwich Albion F.C. non-readable? Not to be rude, but I do not think it's that difficult to read them. Arbero (talk) 11:40, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

I'm satisfied that we have come to an conclusion, but is it alright if I can at least fix a few redirects? For example, Osasuna is linked to the city itself, not the club and Albacete Balompie should have an é instead of e. Or perhaps you want to make the calls? Arbero (talk) 13:15, 18 July 2013 (UTC)
Sorry, I noticed that. Anyway, I hope you don't take this too serious, but I fixed all the club and tournament redirects, rather than the actual agreement between us. I have left words, such as "stoppage time", "vertebrae", "friendly match", "2001–02 Segunda División B Play-off" and "Johnny Heitinga" as redirects. If you are not satisfied, then should I just take the previous mentioned words above? Arbero (talk) 13:54, 18 July 2013 (UTC)
Ah, yes. As for your mention on the different style, perhaps I should have a thought about this. Well, I have finished this by adding the International caps. Arbero (talk) 14:48, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited 1890–91 Small Heath F.C. season, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Derby Midland (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Patiño and then some

Hello STRUWAY, AL "here",

first things first: about Javier Patiño, i 1 - did not add that link in the first place OK? 2 - corrected the wording because football in Spanish is FÚTBOL not FUTBOL, even though i agree with you in a compound word (FUTBOLESTA) maybe the accent is a bit confusing to say the least. Don't care the least if 1 - the accent is removed; 2 - the link is removed altogether.

In an unrelated matter, seeing that you discussed this with User:Arbero this week: i keep seeing there is no consensus about the Inter Milan naming even though the page was renamed, some insist on writing INTERNAZIONALE and revert those who follow consensus and write INTER MILAN. I was reverted several times by User:Italia2006 on Fredy Guarín, asked him about the consensus on what he was trying to establish and was aided by Snowman as a kind TPS, who said there was indeed a consensus but on calling the team INTER MILAN. Mr. Italia replied no further, and like you say, can't be bothered to edit war.

Cheers --AL (talk) 14:46, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

  • It just hit home, there is this other site called FUTBOLME.com, and i don't write an accent there, not being very coherent there me, myself and i :( I have just re-removed the accent in Patiño, cheers --AL (talk) 18:16, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi there STRUWAY,

i am beginning to feel rather uncomfortable with your late approach towards me, for what reason i would like to know. Yes i know who URUGUAYRIVER was in the past, yes your Google translator was 100% correct. That guy (the sock that is) has created more than 20 accounts in the past, i never encouraged him to engage in such behaviour, he (he is 30 years old i believe, he told me once) is well grown up and does not need (my) help to go against the grain, and since he is most likely to create another account WITHOUT me telling him anything, i only wanted to make things easier, not more difficult for people to work here, especially people who choose EN.WIKI to edit but speak very little English. Plain and simple, no agenda here, but i agree with your analysis about URIVER in MYS77's page overall: not a per se vandal but nearly impossible to work with, i fear.

If that is against WP rules, won't happen again, sorry for any incovenience. Picking up the first line in this message, a follow-up question: am i on your watchlist or something? If so, why? And the "Please don't try to convince me..." bit, which is nothing more nothing less than "Don't LIE to me" was also very unnecessary i reckon.

Happy week --AL (talk) 23:11, 21 July 2013 (UTC)

  • Ah, almost forgot: i have written an additional message to MYS77, explaining the error of my ways. Since i don't want my good intentions here to be questioned again, ever, i add that i wrote it BEFORE seeing you had contacted MYS77, not AFTER, and i wrote it so we can close this matter, i made a MISTAKE, yes i make several at the site, but is that all i do here?

Cheers --AL (talk) 23:18, 21 July 2013 (UTC)

  • Seems you are angry with me, fair enough...I'll be blatantly honest with you: each time that Brazilian sock created another account, i "prayed" he would finally comply to the site's rules and never be blocked again, now i know i should have known better. I PROMISE i will never engage in conversation with this person again and even if he contacts me first i won't reply (ah, and now i will remove the message i sent him, for more closure).

But please, Struway, answer this question so i know what can i expect (just "yes" or "no" if you don't feel like elaborating): if i have a matter of football i want to discuss with you, where i for instance need your assistance, can i write you or have you PERMANENTLY frozen me out after this incident as you feel i have betrayed the site?

Attentively --AL (talk) 14:42, 22 July 2013 (UTC)

  • Thanks! But please note, i NEVER wanted you to take me off your watchlist, if it was for a positive reason i would not mind, hence i asked. Your only reply was "I'll take you off my watchlist", guess i'll never know. Cheers. --AL (talk) 16:22, 22 July 2013 (UTC)

Confronting non registered user IP's

Hi, just browsing Wiki as per usual, and noticed you had posted the following against the IP address I have been currently allocated by my ISP:

Please refrain from making unconstructive edits to Wikipedia, as you did at Nikola Žigić. Your edits appear to constitute vandalism and have been reverted or removed. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. Thank you. Struway2 (talk) 22:04, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

Please refrain from posting irrelivant messages such as this to unregistered users as for the majority of the worlds population, we use dynamic IP's which change whenever we connect to the internet. Hi there Stru, AL "here",

please read this message i sent to fellow user User:Mattythewhite (see here http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/User_talk:Mattythewhite#Reply_-_Others), the part that starts with "On an unrelated note...".

Have a great one, keep it up i know you will :) --AL (talk) 14:25, 1 August 2013 (UTC)

P.S. Ah, Snowman once said you had a great eye for hunting socks, well you've your match sir (this Brazilian guy is unmistakable), too bad i'm leaving ;) --AL (talk) 14:26, 1 August 2013 (UTC)

Hi i'm back (LOL indeed),

i say that in the brackets because everytime i walked away from WP i seriously had the intention of leaving (too much - self-induced? - stress), but, being i the loner with no hobbies that i am (maybe an amateur poet and that's it!), i knew i could not. I broke my own WP:Primadonna record, but it was still less than one week :)

I trained for a few days as anon, and now i think i am ready to: 1 - stop feeding the trolls; 2 - write 100% encyclopedical summaries. I will try to lighten my burden (thus the stress) from now on by editing exclusively on SPANISH/PORTUGUESE (or based in those countries) footballers.

Whistle if you need anything, cheers --AL (talk) 18:31, 6 August 2013 (UTC)

Walter Pandiani

Hi there STRUWAY, AL "here",

as you are a trusted, no-nonsense WP user/Birmingham City fan, i'd like to know your opinion on the following (possible) article additions: would this player's penchant for driving trucks (he has the pertinent license) be encyclopedical in the PERSONAL section.

Refs i found: in English (http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Football%3a+GOALS+ARE+ON+THE+MENU+FOR+HOT+PAN%3b+WALTER+Pandiani+is...-a0136330778), and in Spanish (i could retrieve more than a dozen if required, here's a "whiff" http://www.terra.com/deportes/articulo/html/fox114832.htm, http://www.sport.es/es/noticias/espanyol/pandiani-llego-con-camion-1187776 and http://es.uefa.com/news/newsid=574582.html). If you see it worthy, i'll work on it tonight, please drop by afterwards to check the grammar. Cheers --AL (talk) 18:55, 15 August 2013 (UTC)

Ron Saunders

Hi mate, I'm currently on work experience at Sky; I'm working on some videos, one of which features Al Saunders, who reveals his family connection to Ron Saunders (he identifies him as his great uncle, although he may be once removed given the age difference between them). When the video goes up on the Sky website, I'll link directly to it (though I may need some reminding); in the interim, there may be another source that I can use if I can find it. – PeeJay 12:29, 21 August 2013 (UTC)

Haha, cheers man, I appreciate it. – PeeJay 13:07, 21 August 2013 (UTC)

Honours IP hopper

Thanks, got him. If you see him again please let me know. GiantSnowman 16:52, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

Got him - I'm away from tonight / tomorrow morning at the latest for a few days, so you'll need to notify another admin or use AIV if he re-appears in the meantime. I've also requested a range block at WP:AN but not sure if it's feasible. GiantSnowman 17:09, 27 August 2013 (UTC)

Lorenzo Melgarejo - Bits and pieces

Hi there STRUWAY, AL "here",

i apologize for some of my wrong "corrections" in this player's article, really had no business doing some of the things i did (i.e. removal of box ref, un-piping club names), but some were actually improvements which you then reverted. I elaborate:

1 - Benfica IS a powerhouse in Portugal, period, that's not POV (by the way i'm not a Benfica fan, support no club at all, if i did it would be Athletic Bilbao for example) - ah but don't worry, i have not reinstated it; 2 - U.D. Leiria is not known as LEIRIA solely, if you don't "allow" for the full name, then accept my last change, which is 500% correct (OK, maybe not that much); 3 - i presented a much better UEFA.com report on the match with Chelsea, you reverted it, why? 4 - again the beef, i present a double wikilink (competition and season of competition, or in this case season of competition and final of competition), you only "allow" for one, "double why"? 5 - i don't think it's POV to write the club's nickname in the middle of a sentence where you are clearly referring to Benfica (Reds), that does not confuse the reader, but don't fret, as in item #1, i have not reinstated the wording.

Can we reach a compromise? Cheers --AL (talk) 23:28, 31 August 2013 (UTC)

  • Understood! Clever man, the paragraph which also contained "Reds" usage mentions Liverpool immediately afterwards, i did not realize it but that surely CAN throw people off, apologies again ;) --AL (talk) 14:23, 1 September 2013 (UTC)

Follow-ups: added +1 ref about the Chelsea final, where he is clearly referred to, case "closed". BTW, i think Mr.Melgarejo has changed clubs, am going to browse the web (especially the club ZEROZERO.PT claims he now plays for, FC Kuban Krasnodar and its website). Cheers back, continue the great work --AL (talk) 14:41, 1 September 2013 (UTC)

Oops, said ballclub only has (that i can see) Russian version, my Russian is a "little" rusty to put it mildly. Let's wait for further developments. --AL (talk) 14:50, 1 September 2013 (UTC)

  • As i was doing some cleaning around my house, thought about this, so come here and "clean" my original message "up": i was wrong to tell you the LEIRIA club was never known as such, i meant to tell you it was seldom known as such, but every once in a while it is in fact addressed by that denomination.

"Case" closed, cheers and keep it up --AL (talk) 18:22, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

  • Not closed then! I have reinstated two refs you removed, feel it's only fair to notify you. They are official club releases, why do you feel they are not needed? Is it because it's too many foreign-speaking sources for same news, what is your approach here mate? I am asking with a 100% positive approach, because i want to learn how to be a better editor every day, if possible; if it is a matter of (i repeat) too many foreign sources for same news, maybe we can remove just one and keep another (i.e. the one from his new club, Kuban)?

If you remove those refs again obviously i won't re-reinstate them, but would like to be "enlightened" as to the preferable M.O. out there. Cheers --AL (talk) 03:43, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

  • Thanks for the input, indeed i'm a struggler, that's what happens when you don't read the WP: x and y's, you're left in the dark somewhat. For your information: 1 - my summary RANT was more dedicated to the guy that removed the player position in the article's introduction than anything else, the refs mention came as a (non)"bonus"; 2 - i did not notice (honest to god) that the F365 was an opinion piece, i only saw it spoke about the EL final and the article subject, so i thought it was a good one.

Birth dates

Hi. I accept your point about TransferMarkt, and I'll get onto the FA about publishing the dates themselves, since they're evidently quite happy to give them out in emails (knowing that they're for the Wikipedia article). In the meantime, if you haven't already, I'll revert the under-17 article to how you left it. However, for the older age groups, there are numerous credible sources for their dates of birth. If you're not prepared to take the time adding readily available citations yourself, could you please contact me in future and I'll put them up. Otherwise we're just wasting time going back and forth. Clicriffhard (talk) 13:49, 5 September 2013 (UTC)

Just seen your second message - thanks. I'll go back and re-do the under-18s without using TransferMarkt. Sorry for being short with you, one of those days... Clicriffhard (talk) 13:51, 5 September 2013 (UTC)

Thanks!

Thank you for the "gesture of appreciation" - it's very kind. As for being "remarkably tolerant", I actually felt that I was a little rude to you, when my slight irritation was really just caused by the realisation that I had a bit of unexpected work to do, so I apologise for that! If you ever feel like picking over the under-21 article in particular, please do; there are a few unsourced (albeit probably accurate) passages that were there when I started editing the page, and I haven't had the heart to delete them, not to mention that I don't want to dominate the article too much. Suggestions or changes would be very helpful. Clicriffhard (talk) 19:23, 12 September 2013 (UTC)

Everton reverts

Hello Struway2, could you please review the timestamps by User Spc 21 on Everton player articles such as Tim Howard.. I made the nationalteam-update and club-update the same using the ~~~~~ and user reverted with the edit summary "Can't play for national team and club at the same time". Thanks, John

Far more accurate to say when the match was played rather than just changing both to a random time. You also did not update the national team parameter so why change the date? I notice JMHamo your antagonistic editing style is aggravating multiple editors on this issue. Perhaps you should stop as we would hate to see a valued contributor as yourself blocked. Spc 21 (talk) 22:26, 5 October 2013 (UTC)
@JMHamo:, @Spc 21:. I personally prefer to use the current date/time for infobox updates, both to accord with the wording at the bottom of the box and, more particularly, to make it clear to the reader that the stats are not only correct but also (relatively) up-to-date. The important thing is not to make things difficult or unclear for the reader. The "as of match played <date>" method does explicitly tell the reader when the stats are/were correct, so as long as the article in question had been stable using that method, I personally wouldn't revert it. As I've said elsewhere, what really doesn't work is using the bare date of last match, which is ambiguous. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 08:20, 6 October 2013 (UTC)
I totally agree. I've never used the bare date for the updates for that reason. To me using the time looks strange as infoboxes are often updated long after the match is over. It also avoids confusion for the reader when both national and club updates show the same date and time. Spc 21 (talk) 11:22, 6 October 2013 (UTC)

John Bramley

I'm fully aware of NOTBROKEN - but centre half and right back don't (or did not, now fixed) redirect to the specific section on the specific position, if that makes sense. Frost is the one who says he was a RH; once I have created a full compliment of ex-BCAFC stubs I intend to go through the Frost book in greater detail and expand accordingly - at the minute I am using the two sections at the back that give brief player histories, as opposed to the 'History' section at the front which should hopefully provide greater details. GiantSnowman 15:37, 7 October 2013 (UTC)

Ideally we should have software able to differentiate between 'Full back' and 'Full-back' and 'Fullback' etc. and realise they are all the same - meaning that a change in section header would not affect the redirects. The RB one was just bizarre though... GiantSnowman 15:54, 7 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi there STRU, AL "here",

if you look at it closely, it's THE SAME image, only with a different resolution. I only followed suit to your summary when you reverted it the first time and i was only trying to help. Don't fret, won't remove it again, lest i am accused (not saying directly by you) of doing something wiki-illegal.

Happy weekend, cheers --AL (talk) 23:03, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

This is what was added right before you reverted it quoting "not a free image" (please see here https://en.wiki.x.io/w/index.php?title=Javier_Pati%C3%B1o&diff=569209884&oldid=565719413). If it's not the same that now rests in the article, i must definitely have to have my eyes checked (41 years of age going on 42, not exactly your average youngster anymore...) --AL (talk) 23:05, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

I take it there is 'RageSamurai' and another named account? I agree it looks suspicious - I suggest you open a WP:SPI and present your evidence there. We'd need a WP:CU to prove links between them; I don't have those tools. If you have never opened a SPI and need help please let me know. GiantSnowman 10:51, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

You're right we should probably try and talk to the two editors first - if they deny it, or don't respond, at least we can use that in the SPI, should it come to that. SPIs are still horrendously under-administrated (would do so myself if I had time) and I've been waiting 9 days for the resutls of one on our old friend MarkMysoe. GiantSnowman 11:26, 25 October 2013 (UTC)
No problems - same to you, glad we could get this sorted in a productive manner. GiantSnowman 11:20, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

That fellow RageSamurai is actually my classmate Rahul. He is a mischeivious fellow. He often uses the same computer as mine. And you know, he is in the habit of getting me into trouble , be it in our school or somewhere else. As soon as he saw me nominate Fergie, he reviewed it. I just want to get rid of this fellow. I have know problem if the Alex Ferguson revision is cancelled. Please help!! TheProudEditor (Chat) 17:08, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

You may think that the steps taken by him are to help me but they are not. I think he did all those to get me into trouble. I know his father is a Wikipedian, he might have read WP:SPI and then reviewed Alex Ferguson. TheProudEditor (Chat) 17:27, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

Carlos Milhazes

Hi there STRUWAY,

not that i am that surprised, but why do my most of my reasonings (even the simplest ones) always seem to be so wrong? PARALIMNI is the name of the city, it's like writing ARSENAL LONDON, PANATHINAIKOS ATHENS or BENFICA LISBON in the infoboxes. Two different ENOSIS NEON ballclubs exist certes, but Mr.Milhazes only played for one of them, no need to make a box differentiation no? I imagine you followed the discussion between me and User:Vankod; i don't want to sound (again) like a crybaby, but i really don't understand some situations, perhaps will never if i've been here for this long.

Don't worry, won't touch that article again unless to rollback User:Antony1821 and his socks when he "updates" the boxes (in a related note, i'm beginning to lose it because 99,999999999% of the CYP/GRE/TUR users never add the PC update, NEVER), that i will believe me. Happy week, sorry for any inconvenience --AL (talk) 00:41, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

  • Indeed mate, it's for the reader. But we have some strange (can't think of a better word right now) things going on here, like having to write 1.FC KAISERSLAUTERN in the infoboxes when KAISERSLAUTERN would inform the readers 100% well of what club we were talking about, just because a German user created that guideline and everybody complied. Cheers too --AL (talk) 16:19, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

Well? I'd really like to know your opinion on WP:KARLSRUHER and its "raison d'être" in the English WP, i've heard one or two opinions that meet my own (against), but i see that most people are for the measure. Cheers --AL (talk) 17:53, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

  • The example i added in my original message about this is quite accurate methinks: there is only one club in the world named KAISERSLAUTERN, yet we have to write 1.FC KAISERSLAUTERN in the infobox. --AL (talk) 18:34, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

No, not really. If I am unable to verify that a reference somewhere in the article is being used to confirm place of birth, it is as good as having no reference at all - though I will concede I should have double-checked that last one. GiantSnowman 11:30, 17 November 2013 (UTC)
Using the Bill Armstrong (footballer) example - firstly, your edit summary is disingenious. Secondly, I can barely tell from the article quality whether the source confirms he made 130 FL appearances for Gillingham, or 130 FL appearances for all teams - let alone the place of birth. Hi Struway,

Thank you for contacting me about the Joe Smith articles. You are, of course, correct about middle names not being an appropriate route for disambiguation; I had forgotten this guideline and am grateful for you having reminded me of it. Another editor moved one of the articles back, and I moved the other to a title that disambiguates fully without using the middle name. I have sorted out the problem of two Joe/Joseph Smith footballers being born in the same year by adding the year of death as well. What do you think of this solution? I am still sorting out the links to the articles via the new titles; the bot is taking a while to process the navbox changes. Do I read your talk page comment correctly as meaning that you are alright with me removing the remaining hatnotes from these articles?

Sorry about putting the incorrect table in the template. I made the bold assumption that the detail on the season article was correct (which is where I got the info from in the first place). I've updated for the Milwall/Middlesborough game.

Hi there. Happy new year! As you are an editor with some experience with the DYK-prosess, have long experience with editing football-related articles, and you are a native speaker of the English language, I wondered if you have a look at Template:Did you know nominations/Arne Pedersen. There are some phrases that we (1 non-English football editor, and 2 English non-football editors) wonder if can be used in an hook, for instance if it is acceptable to state that an individual player won team trophies or if you could the term "most-winning". I'd appreciate if you could comment on the nomination, and state whether any of those hooks can be used. Thank you in advance. Mentoz86 (talk) 15:39, 4 January 2014 (UTC)

Alex Bruce

Sorry, my edit summaries aren't normally particularly informative. I'll be honest, I haven't read the documentation at {{cite news}} in a long time, so now I just fill in the parameters I can remember on autopilot. So do periodicals also include newspapers? I always thought periodicals was limited to just magazines and journals. As for the undotted form, it's just neater, isn't it? I'm not fussed either way, but I've always thought it looked odd to leave off the end dot just because a dot is automatically added at the end by the template. As for the BBC, I always thought that BBC Sport was merely a part of the British Broadcasting Corporation, not an entirely separate division, hence they would be akin to the "work" and the BBC itself would be the "publisher". As for BSkyB, I didn't expand that one because I was under the impression that the company's name was not expanded (though I may be wrong on that one). In any case, I guess it's not really that big a deal for any of them. If you want to change them back, you can rest assured that I won't change them back. Might take me some time to adapt if I add any future sources though. – PeeJay 14:21, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

re: Footballer infobox timestamps

Okay, I get the point and I will remove my warning. I have always thought we should use the date it was actually updated. This since I always try to use the sources as much as I can and I know that at the time of my update the sources say the same as my update. If I set an other time (for example earlier) it is not sure that the sources had been updated at that time and if someone does backtracking on the source to the time I set, there could be a difference between source and article. Hard to explain, but I think you get my point.

I am not sure that all of the IP edits were correct last night, especially this and this. Why update the national caps, was that correct? And I am not sure that the match had ended at that time, since there was a lot of extra time with the Baker injury. But as I said I will remove my warning and I will still keep an eye on this editor. QED237 (talk) 10:50, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

The same IP is at it again? The match was defiantely not finished by this timestamp. QED237 (talk) 15:25, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
I have no idea why the players have different ways of showing the date of update, I guess it should be the same everywhere but I dont know if there is any MOS to say what it should be. I have not been editing player articles for that long, just started recently during the "no assist" discussion so I dont know. QED237 (talk) 15:44, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi Struway. You may have noticed that Wikipedia:Recent additions lists DYK articles according to the time they were removed from the front page, not featured. This has the result of putting all the articles listed at 16:00 UTC on one day, as being listed the following day (0:00 day+1 when they are removed). Not a big deal, but just letting you know. Rubén Rochina

Hi there STRU, AL "here",

just a few pointers regarding my edits. 1 - i prefer full name of clubs in storyline and compression in box, but i'll abide by in Rochina's article (speaking of that, i can't grasp why they say, for example, Osasuna is the club's common name and we should address it as such, then the WP article is named CA Osasuna when it could be "Osasuna", another example could be CD Numancia, and that's just addressing Spanish teams); 2 - i once asked someone if one could write (for example) "2-3 loss" instead of "3-2 loss" and they told me it's 100% correct (then the "home" and "away" or "at" would show us the venue of the match), you reverted me i'll leave it alone.

3 - however, i'd like to know if you also can compromise in the latter Zaragoza section: if he (subsequently) dislocates his shoulder at the very beginning of 2013-14, and he was loaned to Zaragoza in January 2013, when was he relegated with the Spaniards? OBVIOUSLY in 2012-13, can you leave it like i inserted it please (i agree that the "Aragonese" bit can be a bit misleading)? 4 - what exactly is (grammar-wise) wrong with some commas now and then instead of three full stops in a sentence that contains three or less lines? I thought there would be none, but obviously you thought otherwise.

Happy week, cheers --AL (talk) 16:35, 27 January 2014 (UTC)

Walter Pandiani

Hi there STRUWAY, AL "here",

maybe i was not 100% thorough in my last edit in this player, but i did not get anything wrong in my inputs either, did i (except for year of signing)? Now, i've improved article further, adding real refs for all his goals in his new club, thus "treating" ESPNFC.com as what it is, a link. I just don't know if i got it right inserting publishers and/or newspapers (i always write "publisher" in that field, after all something is published no?)

However, if you think that ESPN link still deserves to be a ref, then feel free to relocate it and sorry for any inconvenience. Cheers --AL (talk) 23:51, 5 February 2014 (UTC)

  • No reply, everything summarily removed (well that FUTBOLBALEAR source was allowed to stay), whereas i relocated, different from removing! I thought you were a fan of refs instead of links posing as refs, i see i was wrong. And i corrected translation stuff in REF#25 (from "returns" to the correct "will return", "return" is "vuelve" in Spanish, "will return" is "volverá"), that was reverted too. And i don't know why one Pandiani is referred by name and the other by surname, i though when both persons named in sentence had same surname, the first name was the way to go, and i thought after the paragraph started with player's name, one could do without writing his name again (Miramar section - also there, don't know why when NO OTHER club is mentioned in sentence, we can't write "side" or "club"); last but not least, your ESPN source actually shows him scoring four from seven, not six from three, don't know the problem with keeping all four refs (yours and my new three), but don't worry i won't touch article again.

I don't know if this reaction still stems from my stupid rollback from nearly two years ago, does it stem? I already apologized more than once. --AL (talk) 01:04, 6 February 2014 (UTC)

Final thoughts, per your summary when reverting me: we could alter the "scored three times from six appearances" bit you added and speak instead of his debut (scored and missed a penalty in a 2-4 loss, or 4-2 BOTH are correct, i think that's rather notable), but that's just a suggestion for you, like i said i'll leave the article in peace, will edit in WP overall until 12 JULY 2014, date of the 2014 FIFA World Cup final, now it's not another prima-donna attitude, i'll really leave because i've been mentally repeating it to myself for weeks now, so it'll be easier to comply/adjust to.

Happy editing --AL (talk) 02:46, 6 February 2014 (UTC)

  • Thanks for your constructive criticism, you only got the end wrong, i don't think of you as petty, what on earth are you thinking man? It's just that i actually thought i was improving the article because i thought "Well, maybe Struway cannot get newspaper/websites references for Pandiani's goals because he struggles a little bit in Spanish, so i'll help with real references, maybe this'll replace that ESPN link real well", and to see it reverted cause quite a shock i'll admit it.

One final question (not until i'm here no sir, final regarding this issue): can i still add the three references in Spanish to go alongside the ESPN link, and replace "Miramar" with "club" or "side" in the last line of pertinent sentence? It's just i don't feel it fair to force myself to stop editing in the article (no mate, not saying you said to me to leave the article alone, i did), so your additions will ALL still be there. Please reply to this.

Cheers, and the utmost sorry for the inconvenience it cause with (some of) my words, i have total respect and consideration for you and your work, it's me who most of the times does not comply to the WP policies, if you don't believe me well can't force you --AL (talk) 13:11, 6 February 2014 (UTC)

  • I most definitely agree with your analysis of the distribution of Mr.Pandiani's club career contents, but i feel the first ten years are adequately covered (transfers and its fees, some goals not 60% or even 50%, his (quasi)-achievements with Espanyol, etc). Maybe it's me, but i don't like articles with 500 lines (unless of course you're talking about absolute legends in a given field: Charles Chaplin, Ryan Giggs, Lance Armstrong, such articles and similar are bound to be enormous), cheers --AL (talk) 19:32, 6 February 2014 (UTC)

re: League table template

Hi. Okay I will see if I can find the consensus I do believe exist, (but now that you questioned me I am not sure).

The reason for this template is that on many club season articles the league table was not regularly updated (which it perhaps was at Birmingham, I dont know). Because of that the idea of a template was created so that when it is updated it is updated on all of the other articles as well. The fact that you say the table on Birmingham article is updated and the template is not is, to me, not a good reason for excluding the template. Why dont you update the template and help all the other articles in the process instead of replacing it with a table correct on one article. If you feel that the table is incorrect you update it.

What you mean about messy, MOS-non-complaint and so on I dont know. During this process of creating the template we discussed it at WT:FOOTY and Wikipedia:Village Pump (technical) so there was a chance for everyone to voice their opinions and it now looks the same as the table on all the regular seasons (some have the template like 2013–14 Premier League‎ and some dont like 2013–14 La Liga‎).

As I said I will see if I can find the consensus but I dont see why you would protest that it is not updated. You could update that table just as you update the template. One small setback is that it might take a while before the change happen on the article because when a template is updated the articles with the template is set in a updating queue to be rebuilt. This is solved with a link in the template documentation (I will update that link) that purges the pages immediately to show the changes or you can do a null edit on the article. It might also be a bit harder for unexperienced editors since you must update the helper template (templatename/p) to make sure right lines are shown on the club articles.

But to me the pro's outweighs the cons since all club articles are update and up to speed, which they were not in the past. QED237 (talk) 14:34, 6 February 2014 (UTC)

Maybe I missed the point (perhaps because english is not my native language but that's no excuse). I can agree with what you are saying. The fact that one editor edited after the first match on 1 February and that no editor has edited since (not after the afternoon matches or later) is not very good. This is a fault in the template (or rather the subtemplate being used) that it says 1 February 2014 after someone uppdated the template after he early match that day and not the afternoon matches. Perhaps using a timestamp is better but in that case it will be "Updated to games played on 13:15 1 February 2014 (UTC)", which I dont think is gramatically correct. And also I cant promise that it will be updated very fast as I also have limited time to spend on wikipedia from this point on. I dont like incorrect information either but if some editors update the template instead of their original table, it will work, but I do share your concern since there are very few editors editing on these "low level" articles. QED237 (talk) 16:20, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
No worries, I did not find you rude at all. I am sorry if I came out to "strong". I guess you are right that the implementation might be rushed and that there are not enough people involved updating it. The more the better. And also accuracy is better then standard I agree. I just see the potential so maybe it is a bit rushed. What I have seen the last couple of weeks is that the number of editors editing {{2013–14 Premier League‎ table}} is increased fast and there has been IP editors updating as well as account-users so I believe that more and more will start updating them and learn how to do it. I have all of these templates on my watchlist and I can see if they are updated correctly. I should have some extra minutes at the end of every day to see if they need to be updated.
I do believe these templates are the future (perhaps a bit to optimistic) if we give it time, and I was actually thinking to start looking at making a template for La Liga and Bundesliga. After some thoughts perhaps I should wait, but it has worked out well in Premier League and in the top divisions were many editors edit it is updated almost immediately. It is worse for the lower levels. QED237 (talk) 21:45, 6 February 2014 (UTC)

Hi there STRU, AL "here",

per this message i sent Matty (please see here https://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/User_talk:Mattythewhite#User:Antony1821), do you think you can ask another admin to step up and block this vandal? Both Matty and Snowman (he's also familiar with the situation, as i saw in his talkpage) seem to be on a (well-earned) wikibreak.

Note: i have already rolledback some of his new edits, not all. Cheers --AL (talk) 21:24, 8 February 2014 (UTC)

Block evasion

Blocked by another admin. I have gone and reverted some other of his edits. Let me know if you see him again. Cheers, GiantSnowman 10:53, 9 February 2014 (UTC)

Míchel

Hi there STRU, AL "speaking",

i apologize for the birth stuff ref removal, first things first. In related "events", i told in Míchel what i told about Walter Pandiani and i thought you agreed - because we exchanged ideas on that in the past, can't remember if it was in our talkpages or at WP:FOOTY tough - now i'm not so sure, which was that newspaper articles and akin were much better than links posing as refs to source birth stuff (i imagine the latter are 100% OK to source something as mechanical as height), that was my reasoning.

Cheers --AL (talk) 16:44, 12 February 2014 (UTC)

User:Borocho22

I bring this to your attention, since you monitored this situation closely: not only does the "user" still does not add PC update, he seems to have taken to inflating/altering stats, as seen in Mauricio Pinilla (please see here https://en.wiki.x.io/w/index.php?title=Mauricio_Pinilla&diff=571443099&oldid=571064739).

Happy weekend, cheers --AL (talk) 20:03, 14 February 2014 (UTC)

Did not notice it was only two, only knew his last "raids" were from late November, and checked the top edit that said "4 FEBRUARY 2014". Since his edits are viewed as highly disruptive, per his talk page, i though't i'd help and tip someone who was familiar with the situation, you came to mind. Sorry for the inconvenience caused. --AL (talk) 20:18, 14 February 2014 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited 2013–14 Birmingham City F.C. season, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Aaron Martin (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

2013–14 Birmingham City F.C. season and league table

There is no reason to instert a second table. If you feel that the template is out of date feel free to update it. That is no reason to insert a second table. QED237 (talk) 11:59, 2 March 2014 (UTC)

Hi I did not remember we have had this discussion before, sorry about that. However there is a consensus as you can read about in Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football/Archive 83#Use of template tables on 2013–14 Football League One and 2013–14 Football League Two and earlier discussions at WT:FOOTY and Village Pump. Having two tables on the same article I would say just confuses people. Perhaps we should take this to WT:FOOTY again for input from more editors? QED237 (talk) 16:25, 2 March 2014 (UTC)
I can to some degree understand your point of view but you cant really say that it is worse to have that table than being without when it is dated of the day it was updated. What if Birmingham dont play for three weeks (due to waterlogged pitch or something) isn't it better to have an updated current table? QED237 (talk) 17:26, 2 March 2014 (UTC)

A sad day

A fit Murphy was just awesome, and, although his retirement is unsurprising, it's a massive shame and a hammer blow for the club. Hancox just isn't at that level yet, and I would go as far to say that Murphy is the best LB talent-wise since Grainger. I hope he's kept on behind-the-scenes, and used to try and help Hancox develop. Maybe Murphy's article should be the next Birmingham GA? Lukeno94 (tell Luke off here) 09:50, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

Hello mate, thanks for reminding me. Could you look up this Mahmoud Najdi chap. I think it might be a hoax. I couldn't find anything myself. JMHamo (talk) 13:31, 4 March 2014 (UTC)

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to John Burckitt may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "()"s and 1 "{}"s likely mistaking one for another. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page:

  • |death_date = <!-- probably early November -->1999 {aged 52)<ref name=CovTel/>

Jack Butland

Hey, I didn't mean that Jack Butland is no longer selectable for the national team. He has neither played in the national team in the last 12 months nor has been called up to the squad. This has made me remove the dash beside the international year. For example, Alessandro Del Piero, Raul (footballer) and many others have not played for their respective national teams for more than 12 months, so a dash is not there in the international years date. It is not that they are unavailable for national team. RRD13 (talk) 13:15, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

Hernâni Neves bits and pieces

Hi there STRU, AL "here",

saw your input in MTW's page and immediately "went to work". Found nothing in Portuguese of interest, but did so in SPANISH (!). It is highly reliable in the latter language, so i think we're in the clear now...

I repeat what i said in Matty's page: i find it discouraging when TRUE info is removed from articles, but i completely understand where you're coming from. Cheers, whistle if i have done anything wrong in my updates. --AL (talk) 19:47, 19 March 2014 (UTC)

So, you are looking for sources for exactly what more mate? The length of his ban? We can always adjust the sentence (remove the "originally six" bit); and be sure it was not a big ban (do not confuse with this!), since he was back for the following season where he appeared in 14 games. Cheers --AL (talk) 14:39, 20 March 2014 (UTC)

  • Apart from the length of the ban (hence me saying we could adjust that wording), it's all (not SOME, ALL!) found in reference #2. Maybe the wording is a bit poetic overall, i'll tone that down (ah, but will leave tag, that's not my call). --AL (talk) 16:25, 20 March 2014 (UTC)

Never mind (most of) my post above, the said ref says nothing of him marking Rijkaard, i was still thinking of the blog that stood as ref before being removed. Storyline is now duly cleaned up, but i repeat i'm not going to touch that tag unless told it's OK to do so, WP:BOLD is not advisable in several cases i've come to learn... Cheerio --AL (talk) 16:30, 20 March 2014 (UTC)

And please read this bit in the El País source: "De confirmarse el positivo, Hernani, de 25 años, sería sancionado con una suspensión de hasta seis meses." Shall i translate it or you get the gist of it? --AL (talk) 16:47, 20 March 2014 (UTC)

FINALLY! Again, in Spanish, but since the source does not speak of the duration of the ban, what can be written? Speaking about the article, i know you mean it well and in a polite approach, but i'm "not lucky" about anything, if you or a tougher (so to speak) reviewer want to remove the lot or the semi-lot i could not care less, was just trying to improve WP. I do admit i have some WP:OWN issues that were never duly addressed, and this is a good opportunity for me to test myself, i'll leave the tag be and not move an inch, if people remove more info i'll do the same.

This is not by any means admitting defeat and not wanting to wikiwork, i've spent the last hour searching for refs in Portuguese, found nothing but the source mentioned above. Again i repeat, i only added the source and touched nothing else, if you want to complete/add/remove anything then please be my guest. Cheers --AL (talk) 23:55, 20 March 2014 (UTC)

Ah, i lied, i did alter the storyline one tiny bit, removing the needless "originally six" bit to his ban duration, what we need to prove is he WAS banned (three or six is not such a big difference to merit a side note), and it is now. I repeat, reinstate or remove anything you want, fine with me whichever way i look it, keep up the good work --AL (talk) 00:44, 21 March 2014 (UTC)
