Pigs Is Pigs (1937) Edit
editHi there. I just noted the edit you did to the article. I was wondering: what exactly did you mean by "Robot-assisted disambiguation?" Sorry, but I just don't get it -- it went WAY over my head. :-) -- (talk) Jason Palpatine 23:02, 10 July 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for responding to my peer review request at Wikipedia:Peer review/Papal conclave, 1800/archive1. I have amended the article according to your critique. You mention other inaccuracies in the "Historical context" section - could you mention some of these at the peer review page. --Oldak Quill 22:55, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for helping out with my World War I Aviation article - I think the name needed to be changed! Thanks.
Radio mast articles
editI am contacting you because you have contributed to the VfD discussion on radio mast articles. I just wanted to let you know that a proposal has been put forth at Wikipedia:Deletion policy/Masts to address these articles en masse. Your comments are welcome. --TenOfAllTrades (talk/contrib) 04:32, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

RedStar 2000
editI am sorry for the "Red Star 2000"-article. I didn't mean to make it, I thought it was his user-page and he just hadn't wrote anything ;) But I still think he is a good man, and should have an article. It can just be added upon.--OleMurder 22:53, 17 May 2005 (UTC)

Meigs
editNice job of cleanup on this article; thanks! I was hoping to do it myself, but hadn't yet found the time. RussBlau 18:10, May 20, 2005 (UTC)
- You're welcome. If you have additional time, you might check out the copyright status of the original text. I'm not convinced that the general cleanup I did was sufficient to eliminate any IP claims, but don't know where the material came from in the first place. Hal Jespersen 18:19, 20 May 2005 (UTC)
Stub Categories
editHey, Thanks for the heads up! Using more specific stub categories will make sure the article gets the attention it deserves. Nice work on the article too. best, TitaniumDreads 09:17, 23 May 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for the note re: stubs on Battle of Ngasaunggyan. I do try to categorize my stubs, but for some reason I couldn't at the moment get WP:SC to load up so after unsuccessfully guessing at a few, I gave up and knew that there would be somebody to fix it. We appreciate your efforts! - Bryan is Bantman 20:23, May 23, 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, I knew there was a comics stub, but I also knew there's a stub sorting project :) In any case, the comics people got ahold of it and made it into a much superior redirect. Thanks. -- 24.17.17.26 16:47, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Mr Stabby
editI quote, for these are your words sir:
'To whoever edited this article: to say that one thing "influenced" a second implies that the first thing came before the second one. I don't believe it is possible that the Mr. Stabby webcomic, which appeared within the last decade, could have "influenced" the Psycho shower scene filmed in the 1950s.'
You are actually a moron aren't you. Please read the joke article, for it may help you to understand. I rest my case--131.111.8.96 16:06, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks, it's always nice to hear from my fans. But perhaps you have confused Wikipedia with Uncyclopedia, where your contributions undoubtedly will be most welcome. Russ Blau (talk) 16:12, Jun 3, 2005 (UTC)

Catullus
editHi. I moved all the Catullus stubs/articles that had to deal with poems to wikisource. Someone will need to go through and edit them so that all the links to regular wikipedia articles still work, but aside from that, the text translations on wikipedia itself can be deleted or whatever needs to be done to them. :) sophysduckling

Palestine
editWhat did you mean about Palestine and Jordan? I keep getting confused about the distinction between the historical region and the nascent / imminent "State of Palestine" or whatever the politicians are talking about these days.
I can understand "we want it" but I'm having a harder time with "it was ours in the first place, so give it back". Anyway, I don't have a position on it. I just want to write neutrally about it. Oh, and I'd like to see peace in the entire region.
Cheers. -- Uncle Ed (talk) 18:51, Jun 11, 2005 (UTC)
I have had to fix several of your robo-disambig of Palestine. While iyt is useful to draw my attention to the fact that Palestine needs disambiguation, I find that the robot picks the wrong one to disambig each time. poll
editPoll There is a poll in the talk page of Macedonian Slavs article here:
http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Talk:Macedonian_Slavs#The_poll
Some people are lobbying for changing the article's name to Macedonian without any qualifier. As it seems, a number of these people come from the Macedonian/Macedonian Slav wikipedia project. It seemed only fair to attract the attention of people possibly from the other side of the story. I hope that this message is of interest to you, if not please accept my apologies.
Dab Persia
editSomeone has tried to dab Persian before. It is generally a mistake. Most of the dabs should actually be to the approriate chronological subsections of Persian Empire. It is not a job that is really suitable for a bot. -- Solipsist 21:01, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for the tip. There are some disambiguations that are pretty obvious, especially when it is Persian→Persian language or to Iran in recent years. But I'll be try to be careful and skip those that might be problematic. Russ Blau (talk) 21:53, Jun 22, 2005 (UTC)
- That would certainly help. I've looked at the dab list for 'Persia' before — it is so large it is daunting. It really needs dividing between a group of people who are vaguely knowledgeable; I put a note to that effect on Talk:Persia but so far no one has stepped forward. -- Solipsist 22:12, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- On second thoughts, given that nothing much has changed in the last two months, perhaps it would be better to dab them all as Persian with a comment about the Persian Empire possibility in the edit summary and let individuals watching each page to sort it out... :) Seriously, you could float the idea on Talk:Persia first. -- Solipsist 22:31, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

The Missouri compromise seems to me to be central to the political calculations that led to secession. The rewording makes it seem like the apportionment of votes was a strictly local practice, when it was in fact a direct translation of apportionment via the federal census. Dystopos 05:52, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- You're right. I was speaking not of the Missouri compromise, but the Three-fifths compromise. As a precedent, I think it was important in planning Alabama's secession. Obviously I don't know enough to expound about it in the article. Dystopos 21:11, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for the heads-up. --Tabor 30 June 2005 21:37 (UTC)
When your bot changed Category:U.S. architects to Category:American architects, it removed the category sort key. Now the category is sorted by first name.

editI'm having trouble running up my disambiguation bot; who should I turn to for technical assistance? Josh Parris ✉ 9 July 2005 13:43 (UTC)
Your bot is running amok, I think. It changed a link in Holy Saturday, a link I put in deliberately and explained why on the relevant talk page. When I reverted the change, it came back the next day and re-reverted it. If there's anything stupider than getting into a revert war with a bot, I don't want to know about it. I've just taken the link out instead.
Also, the page chosen to "disambiguate" this link was... another "Greek Orthodox Church|disambiguation page"! Seems counterproductive no matter how you slice it, no? Csernica 01:47, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
How do you do stuff like that?

RussBot disambig
editNote that this edit (changing Pliny link to piped link towards Pliny the Elder on Tacitean studies page) is no way justified: The quote is about what Robert Graves said he had read by the early 20th century preparing for writing Claudius the God. It is nowhere implied that he intended Pliny the Elder's Naturalis historia exclusively. Pliny the Younger's writings that survived into the 20th century probably contained more detail about the broader scope around his subject than the only surviving writing of the other Pliny. But even, he might as well have meant both Plinies, or leave it uncertain which one he intended: that's why I linked to "Pliny", to leave it up to the reader of that wikipedia article what R.G. might have meant.
Further, I'm a bit tired of bots doing this kind of useless work, often deteriorating instead of improving. Really, can't you find something else, something more useful to do?
Sorry, that might maybe sound a bit harsh, but I've already spent hours in reverting this kind of useless work performed by bots (or "bot-assisted" as it sounds less obtrusive). In case you didn't know: wikipedia is built by people, not by bots. --Francis Schonken 20:24, 27 August 2005 (UTC)
- Again sorry about my bad mood yesterday, there's no excuse but it happened. Anyway: as Robert Graves seemed particularily intrested in Tacitus and Roman society in the first half century Pliny the Younger seems as obvious a choice as the Elder one. In fact I can't imagine R.G. read the one and not the other. But after my remark here I embarked in reading some of Pliny the Elder's Historia Naturalis (which I have to admit I didn't read yet), and it provided a clue I was already looking for a long time w.r.t. the Emperor article: A Roman author using the single word "Imperator" as a way to indicate an Emperor (Tacitus using princeps and Suetonius Caesar). So I could add that to the Emperor article. So, thanks for putting me on the right track! --Francis Schonken 06:24, 28 August 2005 (UTC)
VfD and redirects
editHi, I'd just like to note that you shouldn't put pages on Votes for Deletion to make them into redirects - you can just be bold and redirect them yourself. - ulayiti (talk) 17:11, 31 August 2005 (UTC)
- Yeah, but that doesn't really matter since, being dicdef entries, they don't belong in Wikipedia anyhow. And with the way Wikipedia works, if somebody feels you shouldn't have deleted the data they can bring it back with just a few clicks. There's a huge strain on VfD resulting from the huge amount of articles being put there all the time, so it'd be nice if people used alternate means to deal with inappropriate content. - ulayiti (talk) 17:20, 31 August 2005 (UTC)
Legislation
editI occasionally clean up Category:Wikipedia proposals. I saw that naming convention in there, but it didn't seem like an active proposal (for lack of edits) and it seemed like a reasonable idea that few people objected to. So I classified it as a 'style guideline'. If you think this matter needs further discussion, by all means flag it as 'proposed' once more. I would recommend advertising it at WP:RFC or the village pump, too. Radiant_>|< 06:31, September 1, 2005 (UTC)

editSince I know that mistakes generally get noticed far more than good work, I'd like to do my bit towards reversing that trend; RussBot's disambiguation of Conservative Party to Conservative Party (UK) in the Roma people article was right on the money. Redirect vs. Move
editAt Talk:Jim Clark you recommended that Jim Clark be redirected to Jim Clark (racing driver) rather than move the racing driver to Jim Clark, citing Napoleon. I know this makes it an easier task, but why else do it this way? I ask becasue a similar query has arisen at Talk:James Brown (musician). --Commander Keane 17:03, 25 September 2005 (UTC)

What links here count
editHow do you count up the number of articles in a "What links here"? I saw your update of the progress of American at link repair. --Commander Keane 10:50, 6 October 2005 (UTC)
- I use solve_disambiguation.py: I just set special_page_limit higher than what I think the link total will be, then run it with the arguments "-main American" -- it tells me how many pages it is going to work on, and that is my link count. How do you do it for the script that generates the count on your user subpage? --Russ Blau (talk) 10:57, 6 October 2005 (UTC)
- Rather sheepishly I used MATLAB to visit the html source of the What links here page and then counted them up by checking strings. I did it that way because I don't know any other languages, but it's rather slow so I'll give your solve_disambiguation.py a go. I probably wouldn't have bothered with my way if I knew more about solve_disambiguation.py, which is why there should be a /Tool subpage to the Link repair project. Can your program add up Main, Portal, Category, Image spaces simultaneously? --Commander Keane 11:25, 6 October 2005 (UTC)
Canada Crown Copyright
editBack in May you put a comment on the Images Canada Copyright page about the legal status of those images. I am not a lawyer but I can tell you certain images like the official portraits of Queen Elizabeth II, The Governor General of Canada, the Viceregal Consort of Canada, The Canadian Parlaiment, and the Judges of the Supreme Court of Canada ect, are all mostly produced by (as strange as it seems) The Department of National Defence. The explanation for that is that much of the Rideau Hall budget goes thru that department.
I can tell you that those images are easilily available to the public for high resolution download, or they are available free of charge in glossy print form by writting to the Chancellory Office of Rideau Hall...for example if a veterans Legion wanted an up to date picture of the Queen...
Also many of the images listed a CanadaCopyright are military medals which I think have their own copyright status...
As well, a few images such as the offical portrait of Alexander Mackenzie are public domain because they are so old (I have just retaged it).
I am hoping that these photos will not be deleted since many of the Canada related article make great use of them. Dowew 17:41, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
Napoleon
editHi RB. Thanks for the message. I think Wallie is still not familiar with the NPOV rules as he's just joined wikipedia. I hope he would undertand. Keep up the good work. -- Svest 20:12, 10 October 2005 (UTC) Wiki me up™
- Hi. I do understand NPOV. But if everyone removed what they consider is POV, then there would not be much left in this article. For example, to say that Napoleon is considered a genius could be POV. However, many do think this, so it is OK. To say that Wellington is considered a superior general is also OK. Many people also believe this to be true. There is also proof. Wellington beat Napoleon whenever they met for battle... about 6 times. I would say that is very very convincing proof. Wellington has always been considered a great hero. He has many places named after him. How many cities etc. are called Napoleon? Note that it has only been fashionable to praise Napoleon recently (POV???). In the past he had a similar reputation to Hitler.
- I did read the three revert rule. But it is not me doing the reverts (and you know it). The rule also applies to 24 hours. You seem to know all about banning people. I wonder why. I guess some put effort into getting people banned rather than actually creating something themselves.
- As for banning me... I guess you can, but it doesn't alter the facts about what is right. It just shows that people, like yourselves, who know how to apply force by adapting the rules to suit themselves win out. Wallie 06:43, 11 October 2005 (UTC)

Solve disambiguation bot
editThe bot is simply amazing. The only thing is that it makes my computer beep every time it's done with an article. I've stopped shaking now (I was wearing headphones the first time it beeped, rather loud) but how do I make it stop?
Also, I was doing Polish (disambiguation). Is there anyway to change Poland to Polish wihtout using the edit window? --Commander Keane 10:51, 15 October 2005 (UTC)
- Never mind about the beeping, I fixed that, it was a Windows thing.--Commander Keane 16:07, 15 October 2005 (UTC)
- I'd like to change the edit summary to include the usual "You can help!" link, is this possible.--Commander Keane 16:48, 15 October 2005 (UTC)
- OK, I have got the edit summary working nicely (don't know why I didn't think to change the script). Now for my stupidity. How do I type in commands like
special_page_limit
or-main American
. Obviously in solve_disambiguation.py it's always waiting for a specific command (#, n, s etc), so where do you run these other commands.--Commander Keane 05:10, 16 October 2005 (UTC)

- I think I'd better start the Wikipedia:RussBlau tips and tricks for pywikipedia bot article. I was hoping that it was with pywikipedia that clearing of false postives is possible, cheers. On my question about Poland, from what I understand, if the problem occurs while I'm runnig solve_disambiguation.py then I can't run
python replace.py -ref:Polish "Poland"
as that requires the Windows command prompt. Am I on the right track? If there have been too many questions then tell me and I'll go and annoy AllyUnion. --Commander Keane 10:51, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
Disambiguation pages maintenance
editUser:RobyWayne and I have had a small discussion about this maintenance issue, I hope he knows about your efforts. Your test page looks good, the only additon I can think of is sub-totals for each section, and of course an overall count total. We were also considering attempting to measure growth rates of the "What links here" counts for each page (with daily counts stored in a table somewhere). A growth rate would have implications like putting notices on the dab's talk page like "This disambiguation page has been identified as having many incoming links etc...". I wondered why there was a spike in your activity at maintenacne recently, great work! --Commander Keane 16:17, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
- I agree, Russ Blau! Great work so far. I was going to maintain counts on each link for each time the script ran so we could get some metrics on how the links may increase (wishfully thinking decrease) over time. I replied on the maintenance page's talk page, so do let me know if you need any help. >: Roby Wayne Talk • Hist • E@ 18:16, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
- Three hours?? Whoa! :-) Well, this script reads live from Wiki scraping the screens that anyone would be able to click through. Accumulating totals is easy as there is also a MySQL db in the background that I use in my scripts which also makes subtotaling easier, too. Checking how long it has run for me, I've had it run 30 minutes on dialup....ick....and 14 minutes or so on Win2k (small 700mhz laptop) and 10-12 on a higher end WinXP box. Once I take out some debugging that I have it performing, it may run even faster....then again, it all depends on the speed of the 'pedia at the time. So which route do you think we oughta go? I don't think you'd want to run the three hour script any more often than once a week. The 10-15 minute script maybe a couple times a week would be good and I like the idea you have about having the script automatically dropping off (or moving links to another section) once they've dropped below a threshold for a specified period of time--that would be cool. >: Roby Wayne Talk • Hist • E@ 18:35, 17 October 2005 (UTC)

double redirects
editHi Russ, I noticed you said that RussBot is working on the double redirects. Would you be you interested in perpetually cleaning up the double redirects? I have two pieces of perl software: Parse::MediaWikiDump (available on cpan) and the double redirect finder (its an example in the documentation for Parse::MediaWikiDump). Its become apparent that the double-redirects are going to be here for a while (I've contacted the devs and it does not seem like double redirects are a huge priority for them). I don't think it makes sense for humans to do the large work that a bot can do so I've decided not to publish another manual double redirect cleanup. If you are willing I think it would make sense to organize it under the Computer help desk. Let me know what you think and thanks for your help on that last cleanup project. Triddle 17:17, 25 October 2005 (UTC)
- I'd be happy to help, although I know absolutely ZERO about Perl. Well, that's not true; I do know it is installed on one of my machines. Great! Using the double-redirect finder is easy: give it a filename of a MediaWiki dump file on the command line (or feed it via STDIN) and a list of the double redirects will show up on STDOUT. Installation of Parse::MediaWikiDump is straight forward; it is available at http://www.cpan.org/modules/by-module/Parse/Parse-MediaWikiDump-0.22.tar.gz and the install instructions are in the README file after you untar the distribution. If you would like I can email you a standalone copy of the double redirect finder: all you would have to do is chmod +x it and you are done. As an alternative I can explain to you the logic behind the double redirect finder (its dead simple, really) if you would like to roll your own. Let me know, Triddle 17:40, 25 October 2005 (UTC)

- A solve_disambiguation.py question: Can you seed the script so that you can have two prompts running at the same time without clashing (ie trying to fix the same links)? Native American(s)
editSince there's already a redirect from Native American to Native Americans, does it really make sense to pipe each of the latter that need to read in the singular. For that matter, since Native Americans is a dab page, doesn't it make more sense to dab the links to a final destination page?
Just wondering... -- Mwanner | Talk 21:05, 29 October 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, I was wondering about this also. Kind of seems like a wasted effort since more precise disambiguation is appropriate for most of these. older≠wiser 14:58, 30 October 2005 (UTC)

- Hi, I am from Brazil, like Kaká. Kaká is a Brazilian player with a Brazilian nickname. So, the correct spelling is Kaká. The à is used in Portuguese language only as a crase (which is not the case here). In Italian, à is used to mark final stress. Please, revert the article back to Kaká. The Italian spelling of his name is completely wrong. Regards, Carioca 21:24, 30 October 2005 (UTC)

editWhile i would not want to reduce yr efficiency in the very welcome work of byp'ing rdrs as in yrs re Wendell Phillips, it is desirable, where not too expensive, to keep clear the distinction between rdrs & Dabs (and not to suggest that byp'g Dabs is anywhere near as automatable as with rdrs. Thanks in any case for undertaking this thank-deficient task!

Reverse move of Stephen Schwartz (journalist) to Suleyman Ahmad
editThis move, now fixed, was inappropriate given the consensus at the talk page. If a robot really made this move, it is in dire need of repair. --- Charles Stewart 19:05, 1 November 2005 (UTC)
- Sorry: I misunderstood what your bot did. The bot move happened shortly after a now-deleted move, and seeing the bots move, I assumed that the bot did the former. Apologies again for jumping to conclusions. --- Charles Stewart 19:59, 1 November 2005 (UTC)
Japanese emperor double redirects
editIs there any way you can call your bot off of the Japanese emperor redirects? The articles themselves are in the process of being moved and what now seems to be a double redirect will actually be correct once the articles are moved.-Jefu 23:14, 1 November 2005 (UTC)
Find-A-Grave
editAlright, that's been fixed. Something was very wrong with the database history there. It kept restoring a redirect instead of the actual article. — BRIAN0918 • 2005-11-3 22:34
RussBot and redirect templates.
editHi,
I noticed that whenever RussBot comes accross a double-redirect where the first redirect in the chain has a redirect template, the template is not changed appropriately whenever the redirect chain is collapsed. An example would be if the first redirect in the chain was R from title without diacritics and the next one was R from alternate language. What should happen in this case is that when the chain is collapsed, the first redirect should be changed from R from title without diacritics to R from alternate language. If it is too much work to try and come up with a list of all possible changes for the redirect-template when collapsing redirect-chains, then RussBot should just erase the redirect-template.
Also, would it be possible for RussBot to skip redirects with the type R with possibilities? Otherwise, when the page in question becomes an article, the links that were supposed to link to that article would end up linking to what the article redirected to when it was a redirect. Project Consulate and Empire
editHello Russell,
first, let me introduce myself. My name is Frank Schulenburg, I come from Germany and have been contributing to the German Wikipedia since February 2005. My special field of interest is early modern history, especially economic and world history. You'll find more information on my german userpage.
I'm currently working on a project at the french wikipedia, which I've started a few days ago. You can find it at Wikipédia:Projet/Histoire du Consulat et de l'Empire. The main goal of this project is the collaboration between the different Wikipedias on the topic of the french Consulate and First French Empire (1799–1815).
I would like to invite you to contribute or just to take a look at it. If you want to take part in this project, please put your name in the list of participants. You will also be very welcome to translate the introduction ("objective") into english ;-)
Greetings, --Frank Schulenburg 09:49, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
Calling RussBot for Julian year
editJulian year is currently on WP:DPL. A fair few of the "What links here" for Julian year occur within the Minor Planet infobox. When Julian year is linked to on these pages (eg 1862 Apollo and 1566 Icarus etc) it should go to Julian year (astronomy). Can RussBot help out on this one?
By the way Russ, would you like to be nominated for adminship?

- Perhaps this is something of a call to the RussBot. I have just been burnt (ie given incorrect info) by the python bot giving my a dodgey link count (for Classical music, thanks for fixing that up for me). Although my script doesn't falter with redirects (which is why I guess the python bot stumbles), it is annoying to run becasue I have to boot up MATLAB first. Is there a python script that counts the links corrrectly (I'm guessing RussBot might use it for the Maintenence weekly update)? Cheers.--Commander Keane 01:27, 23 November 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for the info Russ. Interesting. Why then was RussBot changing Native American to Native Americans. I thought that had something to do with redirects causing trouble.--Commander Keane 13:25, 23 November 2005 (UTC)
I agree the onerousness of the fee depends on your position. Since WP is a general interest encyclopedia I figured that raising the fee from $20 to $170 takes it out of the "nominal" range for the average reader. Take care. Ellsworth 01:03, 22 November 2005 (UTC)
Thanks!
editFor the heads up on the Anglican bishophoric moves. If you find any others, let me know. That's why I dislike it so much when people do mass moves like that. Apparently someone else reverted the moves before I did, so when I reverted them again, it created double redirects and no real pages. Oi vey :) But it's fixed now. --Woohookitty(cat scratches) 19:00, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
- Apparently I'm going to have to restore every one of these pages. Please shoot me. :) --Woohookitty(cat scratches) 19:11, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
- Well it's working now. I had to essentially restore about 20 articles and then revert them back to pre-move versions. Pain in the neck...took me over an hour, but it's working now. Thanks for the heads up. Otherwise it might not have been caught. Btw, yes the Bishophoric of Southwark is different from the Archbishoric. Apparently the Catholics and Anglicans both have a presence there. Anyway, like I said, that's why the moves Bessarion made were so destructive. Wiki is good software but it has trouble with undoing moves. Anyway, all fixed now. Thanks again. --Woohookitty(cat scratches) 20:20, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
Possible "Roman" portal
editHi, have a look at the talk pages of the main Roman pages for info on my proposed Roman portal. (Sorry this is a rushed messsage, I have to go catch a bus.) --LesleyW 00:13, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
