Welcome to my official Talk Page! If you post something stupid like "Welcome, here are the five pillars of...blah blah blah" I'll probably delete it. Have the gumption (I was going to say, balls, but that might be offensive to women and men who have had heavy machinery accidents) to leave a real message. Oh yes, and please put a heading with your message...it makes it easier to navigate... Cheers,
Question about the Rugby Super League
editDo you know if the Rugby Super League is semi-pro or completely ameture?--Snoopy753 16:34, 25 July 2006 (UTC) Thanks for your help. I am new to the sport in the US despite the fact that I am a life long NYer. I have been watching for years (mostly international matches). This upcoming season I will be playing for the Village Lions RFC in NYC. Anyway, best of luck in the upcoming season.--Snoopy753 12:36, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Hi Rowlan. In response to your questions (I've numbered them in the same way):
- Technically, O'Rothlain isn't a true anglicized name. It's the original Irish name, spelt in the style of Irish names in the English language (i.e. using an apostrophe after the O and not using diacritics - and as you probably know from your own research, pronounced "oh roh-len/oh rowlan" in Irish). Books and websites etc written in English on Irish genealogy (especially those originating outside of Ireland) often tend to avoid using Irish language diacritics on names, mostly for stylistic reasons. Compare the contemporary comedian Dara Ó Briain, who is usually credited as Dara O Briain or Dara O'Briain at gigs or on TV in Britain.
- Irish names are usually very systematic, and from the name it is evident that Ó comes from the Irish Ua, meaning grandson or descendant. The word that follows Ó will go into the genitive, and to return a word of the sort that "Rothlain" is to the standard nominative, the i before the end is removed. I must admit that the translation might not be perfect, as I'm not sure whether Rothlan is just a name - it could be a title, occupation or something else. But the name does mean "grandson/descendant of [whatever Rothlan means]". I can't find "rothlan" in my Irish dictionaries, but I have found "Rothlán/Róithleán" (wheel!), and doing a bit of Googling, I'm finding that Ó Rothlain might not be the most correct Irish spelling - this link seems to give the name "Ó Rothláin", but whether it is the same name at all, I can't say. I could just be barking up the wrong tree! But at any rate, the name does mean "descendant of Rothlan/what 'rothlan' means". --Kwekubo 00:03, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
- Hi - my main source for the information on "Ó" and "Rothlán" is Foclóir Gaeilge-Béarla (editor Niall Ó Dónaill) - An Gúm, 1977, Dublin.
Ó Rothláin
editSure! As you can imagine there are different dialects etc, but a good general pronunciation would be halfway in-between "oh RUH-lawn" and "oh RUH-loin". The "ruh" bit rhymes with duh. --Kwekubo (talk) 17:23, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
- "Th" in Irish is the eclipsed version of the letter "t", and sounds like the English letter "h". For example, the word 'thug' sounds like 'hug'. As regards your name, the way I'd explain it is that "roláin" would sound a bit like "RULL-awn", whereas "rothláin" has a definite H sound in the middle. --Kwekubo (talk) 21:31, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:ODriscollvbath.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. - Thanks for citing a source, but now the photo needs a proper license. If you want to keep it on Wikipedia, you will need to make a fair use claim by placing the tag {{Fair use in}} and writing below why you think it qualifies for fair use. Am I a copyright nazi? Perhaps, but I love pictures when they're free. Violating copyrights compromises the integrity of Wikipedia. -SCEhardT 02:30, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

TfD nomination of Template:RugbyPortal
editTemplate:RugbyPortal has been nominated for deletion. You are invited to comment on the discussion at the template's entry on the Templates for Deletion page. Thank you.--cj | talk 01:16, 2 March 2006 (UTC)
- I'm having a little difficulty understanding this as I'm not too sure how the mechanics of the Portal work. AFAIK a template should only be used for something used more than once. I think there should be a way to duplicate the effects of the template without actually using a template.GordyB 16:15, 2 March 2006 (UTC)
- I've copy / pasted the template code into the portal so that it looks exactly the same as before only it does not use the template. No reason not to delete it now unless you can think of another use for it.GordyB 16:19, 2 March 2006 (UTC)
- I agree with GordyB. The portal looks fine without the template. I can't see how it would be useful anywhere else either so may as well delete it. Lisiate 22:30, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

Rowlan 17:49, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

- After notification from the copyright owner, I've deleted this image and Image:Leedstykestry.jpg. These were both originally licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution - No Commercial Use - No Derivatives license, which is not the same as the Creative Commons Attribution license, and not a "free" license in that we can't create derivative works and we can't use it in commercial contexts. Top 14
editSorry Rowlan, I know you would have put some time into them, and I'm not opposed to them at all, I just removed the template from Stade Francais, Biarritz and Toulouse as it wasnt complete and was showing up a lot of {{ }} etc gaps. The codes you used to create the kits are still in the history so they can be taken, but the template will need to be tweaked, and all teams should have them, not just three. But it is a good idea. Just wondering if you still are looking for a Rugby League ball picture. I can take a picture of my ball, however it is a bit worn in and has a big Cowboys logo across it, I can do that ASAP. Hi, I noticed you emailed the author of the above image and had him licence it under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike Licence. Unfortunatly this is not free enough for Wikipedia. The most simular licence that is suitable for use Wikipedia would be a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike Licence. Could you see if the author will release the image under this licence please, otherwise the image will be deleted. Alexj2002 13:17, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
- The licence you selected from the list was "This image is licensed under the Creative Commons

Fair use rationale for Image:UlsterRugbyBall.jpg
editThis file may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading Image:UlsterRugbyBall.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. When you use a generic fair use tag such as {{fair use}} or {{fair use in|article name}}, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Would you mind explaining two things to me:
- Firstly how an image can be licenced as both GFDL and as being in the public domain.
- Secondly how a still taken from a television broadcast can be licenced either of the above.
Alexj2002 10:30, 18 February 2007 (UTC)
- Well technically I didn't delete it, an admin reviewed my suggestion it be deleted and agreed. On a more serious note, the image was as you state, an image from a television broadcast. This would mean it was not GFDL or Public Domain but copyrighted. As such we could only use it on Wikipedia if we could claim fair usage on it. Criteria number one that must be met to claim fair use is "No free equivalent is available or could be created that would adequately give the same information.". Seems as a person at an Ireland game could take a photo of the anthems being played, and then licence it under a free licence, I believe that a free equivalent can be created and therefore the deleted image cannot be used under a claim of fair use. As a final point, I notice this is far from the first image you've uploaded that's been deleted, and from your message on my talk page ("It's a screen capture...what's it supposed to be liscenced under?") can I suggest you take a few moments to read through WP:UPIMAGE and WP:FU. Unspecified source for Image:Andrew_farrell.jpg
editThanks for uploading Image:Andrew_farrell.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.
As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

WikiProject Rugby union national team Improvement Drive
editWe need your help! Here is what you can do:
- Adopt a national rugby union team article and collaborate with other members to improve it.
- Find, create and upload free images that will help improve these articles.
- Copy-edit, reference, and expand articles when and where you can.
- Promote the project and encourage others to join.
The World Cup is fast approaching and these articles are going to get a lot more hits during the tournament. It would be great if we could have them at a high standard!

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Stlbombersrugbylogo.jpg)
editThanks for uploading Image:Stlbombersrugbylogo.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 15:34, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
Replaceable fair use Image:Wellingtonmuseum.jpg
editThanks for uploading Image:Wellingtonmuseum.jpg. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast 17:48, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

If you did not create this media file but want to use it on Wikipedia, there are two ways to proceed. First, you may choose one of the fair use tags from this list if you believe one of those fair use rationales applies to this file. Second, you may want to contact the copyright holder and request that they make the media available under a free license.
If you have any questions please ask at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you. Boivie (talk) 12:31, 25 December 2007 (UTC)Speedy deletion of The Rugby Forum
editA tag has been placed on The Rugby Forum requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for web content.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Hello Rowlan!
You are cordially invited to participate in WikiProject Christianity
The goal of WikiProject Christianity is to improve the quality and quantity of information about Christianity available on Wikipedia. WP:X as a group does not prefer any particular tradition or denominination of Christianity, but prefers that all Christian traditions are fairly and accurately represented. |

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Sslogo05.gif)
editThanks for uploading Image:Sslogo05.gif.
Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:45, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

Hey there Rowlan, thank you for your contributions! I am a bot alerting you that Non-free images are not allowed in the user or talk-space. I removed some images that I found on User:Rowlan. In the future, please refrain from adding fair-use images to your user-space drafts or your talk page. See a log of images removed today here, shutoff the bot here and report errors here. File copyright problem with File:Aironi rugby logo.PNG
editThank you for uploading File:Aironi rugby logo.PNG. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Eeekster (talk) 07:58, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

File permission problem with File:RoyalShrovetideFootballMob.jpg
editThanks for uploading File:RoyalShrovetideFootballMob.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.
If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either
- make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
- Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.
If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en wikimedia.org.
If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Magog the Ogre (talk) 23:23, 22 December 2011 (UTC)

Notification of automated file description generation
editYour upload of File:2cool4school.jpg or contribution to its description is noted, and thanks (even if belatedly) for your contribution. In order to help make better use of the media, an attempt has been made by an automated process to identify and add certain information to the media's description page.
This notification is placed on your talk page because a bot has identified you either as the uploader of the file, or as a contributor to its metadata. It would be appreciated if you could carefully review the information the bot added. To opt out of these notifications, please follow the instructions here. Thanks! Disambiguation link notification for May 11
editHi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Ó Rothláin, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Rowland and Rowley (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

The article Rowlan has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
No evidence that this name or family is notable, fails WP:NNAME and WP:NOTGENEALOGY. Source 1 and 2 are mere mentions, source 3 is not about the name, and source 4 is a list of unremarkable immigrants. The one person listed here is not notable. No outside sources were found that indicate notability. Possibly created in a CoI/promotion.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. AllTheUsernamesAreInUse (talk) 04:23, 24 April 2024 (UTC)
