Featured picture question

Raven4x4x, I recently noticed while perusing The Wikipedia Signpost that the image of a poppy (Image:Remebrance poppy ww2 section of Aust war memorial.jpg) had been promoted, but I remembered that it had some opposition (including mine). When I checked out the nomination page, I discovered that it had six support votes (including the nominator), three oppose votes (including mine), and one neutral vote. I thought that such an image would not be promoted, given that past nominations with about the same about of support and opposition have failed. See Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Flemish harpsichord from two months ago as an example; it had six support votes (including the nominator, myself), two oppose votes (one less than the poppy nomination), and one neutral vote. Would you mind explaining your logic in promoting the poppy picture? Thanks a lot for your time and effort! Flcelloguy (A note?) 22:05, 4 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply! However, could I ask you in the future not to assume such things? I'm not complaining about this specific case, but assuming that our objections had been fulfilled shouldn't make votes any less valid. (What if voters had just said "oppose" without comments? Does that make their votes any less valid than ours?) What if I still felt that the article didn't illustrate the article, or had other objections but didn't bother to raise them? (Again, not pointing to this specific image but in general.) Unless a voter explictly states that s/he will only vote oppose or support once a condition has been met, then the vote shouldn't be assumed any less important than other votes; you could also ask the voters to take another look at the FPC. In such cases where a few votes could make a difference, I don't feel it is wise to assume that the good-faith voters would withdraw their oppose votes (reiterating - not commenting on this specific pic, but on the whole). Re: Drug Chart FPC promotion

Hello Raven4x4x - I have nothing against illustrations as FPCs (as you well know), and I think that this image conveys much information in a clear and encyclopedic way. However, I am a bit worried about the Original Research question. I don't get the feeling that issue was satisfactorily resolved for a community consensus. As for being bold - I wouldn't say promotion is the only way to be bold - just make the call the way you gut tells you and I for one will support the decision. Debivort 09:31, 6 January 2006 (UTC)

I would just like to point out that user Semiconscious (a neuroscience graduate student) contacted a professor of pharmaceutical chemistry University of Southern California about the chart who agreed (with Semiconscious) that the chart looked good. References for the chart were added to the article, and all the OR complaints about the chart originated from an anonymous user who proceeded to repeatedly remove the chart from the article. --Thoric 17:19, 6 January 2006 (UTC)

Yes, I was opposed partly because of that, partly because I did not feel it was a really nice image. However, I'd want you to read my comment on User_talk:Thoric as it sums tings up pretty much. I Probably was wrong in voting, since I'm no person to judge it. The chart adds significantly, I agree, but I'm worried about POV and OR. So count me in as neutral, if as anything at all.vidarlo 14:57, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

My personal opinion is still oppose (and I'll clarify that on the nomination page). Regarding the nomination, here are the two choices: either fail it now (there are nearly as many oppose as supports, and not all opposes are to the version without links), or extend it for one or two more days. If you choose the latter, I would recommend contacting everyone who has voted or made a comment on the page and then just informing them that the debate has been extended for 24 or 48 hours, and that they may wish to check out the page again (I would abstain from any mention of the problems, as that may bias the notice.) If the vote outcome still stays approximately the same, the image should not be promoted - there's a considerable amount of opposition (10/9). Alternatively, as I said above, you could just close it as a not promoted because of the significant amount of opposition - a large influx of "support" votes would be required to make this image pass. Clyde Dam

The center of the Clyde Dam picture is dominated by the gray starkness of the dam, which is surrounded by the reddish hills. It is a reasonably impressive physical structure (in size and power at the very least) and the entire picture, including the brush and the hills, seems almost forbidding and "anti-nature," (by which I mean, it is the polar opposite of, say, a sunset or a flower). The entire picture - except for the water at the bottom left... a stunning blue green. The color of the water is jarring but at the same time soothing and refreshing. And then, to top it off, the water color is reflected in the blue-ish hue of the pipes in the middle of the dam - it's like a girl's blue dress brings out the color of her eyes, if you forgive the analogy.

Most of all, what is striking is the color. Color is, after all, the basic visual component of any image, the first thing the eye sees. It's what makes the Clyde Dam picture beautiful; the lack of any interesting color makes the castle picture so bland. Green trees, gray stone, green grass, blue sky - nothing unorthodox, nothing daring. I look at the other [1] on the same page, and it appears that the castle depicted is in reality very impressive - it looks like the last outcrop of humanity in a place overrun by nature. But the nominated picture does not show this aspect of the castle - in fact, it hides it, making the castle seem like yet another building on yet another low grade slope, with flat plains surrounding it. It may be technicallly perfect, but artistically it has little going for it.

Anyways, that's why I thought the Clyde Dam picture was impressive and the castle picture not at all. Feel free to disagree. :) Zafiroblue05 23:43, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

I could, but since there is no rule against it, and I like it, I will keep it. There are plenty of other examples, too- pull up this page here and click the 'edit' button at the top. A large portion of the support votes show sigs as complicated or more so than my own. Not really saying I want to be a sheep and follow the herd, but I *did* get the idea from seeing a lot of other folk with complex signatures. If nothing else, it makes it easier to skim a talk page and find the comments of those who use HTML-coded signatures.

Why would anyone care, anyway?

Hey Raven; when you closed out the discussion on Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Annapolis graduation, you notified the person who nominated the image that it had attained featured picture status, but you didn't notify the person who uploaded it in the first place; me. I found out quite by accident, because I happened to look at Wikipedia Signpost this week (which I don't regularly read). I'm not complaining here; this is not vanity. Just suggesting that in the future, in addition to the person who nominated the image, the person who uploaded the image should be notified as well. I don't know if this is normal protocol or not for featured pictures, as I don't contribute in that area of Wikipedia. If it's not normal protocol, I'd like to suggest that it be made part of the normal protocol. It helps to encourage people to upload great images to Wikipedia. Hello Raven4x4x, I was wondering about the Toucan picture. The original was replaced in the article by you while the voting was going on. This is a bit peculiar in my opinion, since it influences the vote considerably. As you might have read in my comments, I'm not too happy about the edit (saturation is one thing photoshopping parts of the bird away another) and think that move might be a bit rushed. Re: Golbez not on ArbCom

You are correct in that Golbez is not currently on ArbCom. However, should people resign from ArbCom (and based on history we can expect that), the intention is that Jimbo will select replacements from the pool of candidates who received more than 50% support. Given that the lowest % support of an appointed ArbCom member (Jayjg) was 69% and Golbez's was 65%, it's reasonable to conclude that Golbez will be on ArbCom sometime in the near term future. • Please and displeased. I think it will take some time to see if this ArbCom is any better than the last. However, I am doubting now that ArbCom can handle the problems that plague us at this time. The prior body had on multiple occasions stated their lack of intention to work on punitive matters. While this is probably a correct stance for an arbitrating body, it leaves a significant gap in structure when we are working with thousands of people, some of whom refuse arbitration as a means to an end. That said, I do hope and feel that the new ArbCom is less likely to encourage elitism and non-equal treatment of editors. This disparity in how people were treated was a serious failing of the prior committee. Sadly, the wheel warring rfar has been removed now, after just five voices rejected it. Could you please tell me how you counted the votes resulting in non promoting the slinky-picture? According to my own counting there were 10 supporting votes (not counting my own one) and 10 opposing ones. You'll notice that most of my featured pictures are of things like skies, insects, flowers, etc. When winter came, all of the available subjects simply disappeared! I've taken lots of good pictures this winter, like this one here: (Canoes), but they aren't exactly the kind of pictures I'd post on Wikipedia.

Perhaps when spring comes along, I can begin submitting again! :)

Vote in my semi FPC

Hi Raven!
I'd like to ask you to be part of a small group I use to give a preliminary scan of a series of FPC's before I put them up on the actual page. It used to be that I'd but up like 6 or 7 images up (all very similar and of the same subject) onto the nomination so that people could choose their favourite one, but that got pretty messy as often there was no clear favourite. Anyway Solipsist made the excellent suggestion of setting up a sub page to give a preliminary once over to pick the best out of a series.

Grand Central Concourse and duplicates

Hey Raven, thats a very good point you make. I suppose we don't yet have any procedure on what to do in that situation. I'm happy for the original to be overwritten with janke's edit and the two temporary files removed from Commons. While we're on the topic of that, I asked about it in the FPC talk page and didn't get a clear response (here). Do orphaned images on Commons ever get periodically cleaned up? I've noticed that you can't often tell by visiting the image on the commons page whether it DOES actually belong to an article, because you need to visit, for example, the En.wiki page for the image to see the articles it belongs to. I'll overwrite the original with Janke's if you can remove the others. Just wanted to drop a quick note — nothing fancy! — to say thanks for your vote of confidence in my recent request for adminship. As you might have noticed it was unsuccessful; most objections related to my lack of experience. While I disagree that nearly 4000 edits, whether spread over two months or ten, constitutes a lack of experience, I respect the vote and will try again at a later date. Hi, Raven - I'm sending this to you because we have collaborated on FPC... maybe you can give me some info, since I can't find any history of what happened... (I put this on WP:ANB, too): Who is the admin who deletes userpage images without informing the user? That is rude, to say the least. Please check my userpage, two images have been deleted without any notification. Hey Raven, Indian cricket team is close to becoming a FA and in the peer review, Nichalp suggested a graph of India's performances should be included. If you have the time, would you be able to create a few graphs? A way to go about it may be making a line graph on win% throughout India's test and ODI history.
