Hello, Paleontologist99. Welcome to Wikipedia! Thanks for your contributions. My name is Howicus, and I've been an editor here for some time. Here are a few links to pages you might find helpful:

If you're working on creating a new article, you should take a look at this page on your first article, and use the article wizard here to get started. Also, this page has instructions on how to cite sources, complete with videos.

If all this Wikicode is a little overwhelming, this cheatsheet may help untangle it.

If you're looking for a tutorial of sorts, The Wikipedia Adventure is a good option.

And if you need more help, I'd recommend getting live help at the Wikipedia help chat channel: click here to join. Additionally, you could ask me on my talk page, try the Teahouse (a help page for new users) or click here to ask for help here on your talk page and a volunteer will visit you here shortly

Please remember to sign your messages on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. Again, welcome, and have fun editing! Howicus (Did I mess up?) 00:41, 28 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Yamla, you may not realize it but, I am actually NOT 69.70.116.250 or 207.35.196.243. Also, as I said earlier, my IP addresses start with 2602 NOT 2002. You have been falsely accusing me of evading the block since November of 2015! Though, I forgive you. This issue is over 1 YEAR OLD!!!!!!!!! I am VERY sorry for the vandalism I have done a year ago. To tell the truth, I actually OPPOSE vandalism. Also, I have good grammar compared to Ipadguy. That can tell you that the IP address you accused and Ipadguy are actually SOMEONE ELSE!!!!!!!!! I am just trying to let you know. This is NOT a lie at all. This is the HONEST TRUTH. Also, for real this time, PLEASE run a checkuser. Thank you for reading. Decline reason:

You actually oppose vandalism and still did it? Sorry, that doesn't make any sense. It's also a rather curious coincidence that you became aware of who is accused of being your sock quite that quickly. IP addresses may change; CheckUser is never used on request to prove innocence. Languages by year of extinction

edit

Hi, I don't think creating Category:Languages by year of extinction is a good idea. Yes, we do list the date of the death of the last speaker in the infobox of the language article, but that's not a meaningful enough piece of information to warrant being made the basis of categorisation. It doesn't usually make sense to try to pinpoint language death to a particular year as it's a drawn out process. For example, even when the last speaker is alive, the language is effectively dead if they have no-one to speak to in that language. And even if there is a community of speakers (or semi-speakers), it often happens that they will either not use that language between themselves (preferring a language of wider communication), or they will use it in limited domains, or in a paired-down form, and in neither case does it make much sense to think of the language as "alive". – Uanfala (talk) 08:19, 24 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

Category:Generation Z

edit

I notice you've recently created and added maybe 20 articles about people from the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting to Category:Generation Z. That's not really practical, we clearly can't add every article about every person born between the mid-1990s to mid-2000s, there would be thousands of articles. I could see adding articles about the generation itself, the way Category:Generation X has, but not individuals. --GRuban (talk) 00:54, 26 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

I think you're missing my point. Just Category:1998 births has 5,793 entries. Whatever years you're using, they're all going to have about that many per year. Are you planning to put 20,000+ articles about people in this category? If so, that's going to mean it's not it very useful. If not, what is your criteria for whom you're going to put in and whom not? --GRuban (talk) 04:06, 26 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
I put Category:Generation Z in ~ 20 pages because March For Our Lives openly stated that they are mostly Generation Z. Paleontologist99 (talk) 18:17, 26 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
Actually I can't see that being written in the article. But if it were, I can see the reasonable compromise of putting March for Our Lives into the category, as a notable event for the generation. Not each participant in the march. Deal? --GRuban (talk) 19:46, 26 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
Deal. However, some participants like David Hogg and Emma González said that they are in the generation. Also, anyone born in 2003 or later is automatically considered Generation Z. Paleontologist99 (talk) 21:07, 26 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
You are now rejecting the compromise offered above and are explicitly talking about adding 20,000 - 75,000 articles into the category. That makes no sense. I echo GRuban's concerns, such a category would be entirely useless. I don't think the category should exist at all, but I wouldn't object to a category consisting of notable events, but not containing any people at all. Note, I'm an admin but my admin rights give me no additional powers here. I'm speaking as a regular Wikipedia editor. You are perfectly entitled to disagree, particularly if you can demonstrate that a category consisting of 20,000 - 75,000 articles would be useful. --Yamla (talk) 21:20, 26 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
Yamla, I will let you make the final decision on whether the category thould exist or not.Paleontologist99 (talk) 21:23, 26 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
Well, I don't think it should. But I want to be clear, if you and GRuban come to a consensus that it should and a consensus on how to determine which articles to add to it (events only? Events and people?), you should absolutely ignore my preference and do what the two of you think is best. You are both acting in good faith. --Yamla (talk) 21:25, 26 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps the category could include events related to the generation as well as 2003-2013 births categories.Paleontologist99 (talk) 21:27, 26 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
To confirm, you want to include 10-20 XXXX_births categories, and remove the individual people? That would at least be usable, though I suspect some would argue with the specific years. I'd be OK with that. Thank you for your comments Yamla, appreciated. --GRuban (talk) 21:42, 26 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Adding categories and portals to articles for unclear reasons.

edit

Hey, I've noticed you've been adding categories and portals to various articles, connecting liberalism to left wing politics and also putting the liberalism portal into articles where the text of the article does not mention that philosophy. Liberalism is not really a philosophy that fits on the modern "left-right" axis; all modern democracies are essentially liberal in nature; being right- or left- wing in the context of that liberalism is what makes the different political philosophies in those countries work. Also, please don't categorize an article (especially a biography of a living person) where the text of the article does not mention the category explicitly. Thanks. --Jayron32 17:54, 12 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, articles should not be moved, as you did to Misinformation related to the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic, without good reason. They should have a name that is both accurate and intuitive. Wikipedia has some guidelines in place to help with this. Generally, a page should only be moved to a new title if the current name doesn't follow these guidelines. Also, if a page move is being discussed, consensus needs to be reached before anybody moves the page. If you would like to experiment with page titles and moving, please use the test Wikipedia. Hi Paleontologist99. After reviewing your request for "rollbacker", I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). Twinkle warnings

edit

Hello.

I am generally against automation of Wikipedia moderation tasks, so I guess I'm biased, but I wanted to point out to you that the Twinkle warning you gave on User talk:77.102.46.107 was unhelpful. The language in Template:uw-attempt2 explicitly accuses the warned user of editing in bad faith, while this user was clearly not trying to be disruptive. It is my understanding that a level-2 warning should be used only if a level-1 has already been given (I don't use Twinkle, but that seems logical), in which case that was the wrong warning to use. I dislike the Twinkle warnings in general, but at least Template:uw-attempt1 assumes good faith.

I'll be removing your warning. I urge you to be more mindful of what the Twinkle warnings you're using actually say, so as to avoid biting the noobs.

Kind regards from PJvanMill (talk) 16:36, 14 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

@PJvanMill: Please note that I may occasionally make false positives. If they are, then they can be removed.
Okay, just consider not using the level-2 edit filter warning with a specified article, because the language assumes bad faith. Kind regards from PJvanMill (talk) 19:46, 14 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Millennials RFC

edit

Hello. If you've got the time, please vote on my RFC on Talk:Millennials about modifying the lead.--CherokeeJack1 (talk) 06:34, 17 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

@CherokeeJack1: I strongly support the proposed lead for the Millennials article. A 15 year span that spans approximately between 1981-1996 has been more widely accepted and cited over the past two years. In addition, I also support the removal of Category:21st century from the article as a result. Paleontologist99 (talk) 06:50, 17 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Conspiracy theories by country

edit

Hello, Paleontologist99. I motivated my removal of your categorization of 'Conspiracy theories in ...' in the Philosophy categories, but unfortunately you undid those edits without any comment. Could you please explain why to you it seems that 'conspiracy theories' are part of 'philosophy'? To me it's like you mean one could declare quackery (or any pseudoscience) philosophy also, which is of course nonsense. Maybe also ask yourself why the main category, Category:Conspiracy theories (and cf. Category:Fringe theories etc), is not in Category:Philosophy (you might like to try and see how long it would last there and how many reverts it would take you to get blocked for it). I am afraid you are underestimating things. Greeting, Eissink (talk) 08:19, 21 July 2020 (UTC).Reply

Do you have a reference for the "Vintage"/"Obsolete" terms applied to Apple OS releases?

edit

The Vintage and Obsolete Products page at Apple describes the "Vintage" and "Obsolete" categories for hardware, but I can't find any page directly indicating that they apply to operating system releases as well.

I'd love to have references for that and for the support cycle for OS releases, to apply to OS release pages, in the hopes of squelching the edit wars that changes to the support_status parameter for iOS releases seem to provoke. Guy Harris (talk) 08:42, 21 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
