Images

edit

Hi there "newbie"! :-) You are making some good edits here on en-wiki. Small tip though: When you upload images, do so at Wikimedia Commons. That is the image repository for all the Wiki projects and it is completely linked to this English wiki, so you use the pictures just like when you upload them here. The big bonus is that if you upload the picture on Commons, it can be used on all the different languages Wikipedias and other projects. If you upload it here on this wiki, it can only be used here. Most images uploaded here eventually get transferred to Commons, but that is extra work since someone has to do it. Use the Commons Upload Wizard. You log in the same way you do here on Wikipedia. File permission problem with File:Still from US Army information film.png

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Still from US Army information film.png. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F11 of the criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Ronhjones  (Talk) 04:52, 8 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Rum Runner (disambiguation)

edit

Hello. Your recent edit to Rum Runner (disambiguation) appears to have added the name of a non-notable entity to a list that normally includes only notable entries. In general, a person, organization or product added to a list should have a pre-existing article before being added to most lists. If you wish to create such an article, please first confirm that the subject qualifies for a separate, stand-alone article according to Wikipedia's notability guideline. Thank you. Hey there. Since you said you sometimes have a hard time finding the correct links for stuff here on Wikipedia (which I relate to), I thought I might recommend something many people here do: having a curated list of helpful links on your own user page. You might for example include links to Commons and your most-used templates on your page User:Nicholas Nastrusnic so you can always quickly get to them. – Þjarkur (talk) 23:55, 24 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Bird of paradise poster

edit

There's a difference between the film being in the public domain and any posters about the film also being public domain. While the copyright on the film wasn't renewed and that is PD, it has to be established that the same applies to the poster which will have (or has not as the case may be) its own copyright. Nthep (talk) 21:04, 3 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I got your message; yes, it is very confusing and there is no easy way through. That said I'm afraid the onus is on you to establish that the poster is out of copyright and not just rely on the film being out of copyright. However if the film is out of copyright then yes stills from the film are useable. Nthep (talk) 21:27, 3 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Von Tiki

edit

I took the article out of the encyclopedia for now, and I put it in your private user space. It is located here: User:Nicholas Nastrusnic/Von Tiki. You can work on it, add references if you find additional ones, and use it as a source of references and information for other articles. Personally I will find it a good source of information if I undertake an article about Jeff Berry. If someday we find good sourcing about the Von Tiki drink we can restore the article to the encyclopedia. Or maybe we could say something about the drink at a Jeff Berry article, with a redirect from Von Tiki. -- MelanieN (talk) 23:21, 11 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Just so you know

edit

I am working on an article about Jeff Berry. I'm pretty sure I will find enough sourced material for an article. I am slowly working it up at User:MelanieN/Jeff Berry; you can follow my progress there if you like. I'm taking sources from your Von Tiki article and other places. When I think I have done about all I can, I will ask you for additional input. Thanks for putting me on to this quest! -- MelanieN (talk) 16:57, 16 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Actually one thing you could help with right now: a list of his books, with dates of publication. I have made a start, but since some of them went through multiple editions I don't always have the original publication date. Feel free to add notes to my draft. -- MelanieN (talk) 16:59, 16 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Will do. I'll eventually do an article on the Grog Log. Beach has proven challenging, I've hit a dead end for now but there will be some census data uploaded in lieu of actual birth certificate and likely move on for now.
Actually never mind; I found the information about the books. Now I'm trying to figure out how to title the article. It can't just be Jeff Berry because there are other articles about people named Jeff Berry. I have consulted an expert on titling, for help in disambiguating it. -- MelanieN (talk) 00:43, 17 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
P.S. Before you begin an article about the Grog Log, check with me. I want to take a look at the sources you will be using. Here's why: it might not qualify for an article here, and I don't want you to go through that again - going to all the trouble to write an article and then being told it doesn't qualify. Here's why: WP:NBOOK. If the book has not been the subject of at least two full-length reviews in major or general-interest publications, it won't be accepted. Just warning you ahead of time. -- MelanieN (talk) 02:20, 17 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Melanie: see here http://www.frodelius.com/goodspiritsnews/beachbum.html Nicholas Nastrusnic (talk) 04:32, 17 March 2019 (UTC) | Thanks, there's some good (new) stuff in that interview. I will be launching the article in a day or two. After some discussion the title will be Jeff Berry (mixologist). BTW you are doing a GREAT job with Donn Beach! You are finding out all kinds of things that I hadn't seen before, like his second marriage. And I like the way you are handling it when sources disagree. Let me know when you are done and I will do a quick proofread and copyedit on it (I was once a professional proofreader so I can't help doing that kind of stuff). -- MelanieN (talk) 18:33, 17 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
RE: Donn Beach, I am not sure if I will reach a point where it is "done", as I keep finding ancillary things as I do other research and then adding to it, or people I reached out to get back with me. Plus, the new interview I found could include a ton more about WWII for example, I don't know how quick I will get to that as it could be a lot. Feel free to make your edits anytime along the way. Regarding B.O.T., lots of interesting stuff in there. Kirsten could not get anyone in US to print it, had to get Taschen in Germany. It would be considered original research, so I can't do much with it, but I think you could make a strong argument that it was actually German interest in a historic American subculture that jumpstarted tiki in SoCal in the mid 90s. If you don't have BOT it is worth picking up, as is Sippin' Safari (get the 10th year edition).Nicholas Nastrusnic (talk) 02:11, 18 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Zombie article

edit

You might want to keep an eye on the Zombie article. Somebody is making unsourced changes to the instructions for making the drink. All have been reverted so far. -- MelanieN (talk) 22:19, 17 March 2019 (UTC) OK; I have not quite gotten hang of the whole "watching" thing yet but will check it out. Will also look over Berry when I can, looking forward to it! BTW, Donn up to three wives now.Reply

LOL, the wives are adding up! You are a good sleuth to find all this additional stuff - things that had not become part of his usual biography. -- MelanieN (talk) 04:34, 21 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
P.S. If you want to "watch" an article, just click the star at the top of the page - next to "View history". That will "watch" both the article (or user page) and its talk page. And when you click on the "watchlist" at the very top of the screen, it will show you the latest edit to everything on your watch list. -- MelanieN (talk) 04:34, 21 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
As far as I know, he didn't have any wives in Tahiti. Probably the occasional girlfriend, though. He must have kept pretty much to himself, however. I had close American friends who lived in Moorea, and THEY knew Trader Vic personally, and were friends with Brando, and they never mentioned to me that Donn was living there. Hayford Peirce (talk) 23:32, 22 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hello Hayford. If by "In Tahiti" you mean when he was retired, one thing I don't have any information on is if he and Phoebe stayed married until he passed or if they separated and/or divorced prior to that. If you have reliable sources I would certainly (or you could) add that to try to get a more complete picture. All the information I have on Phoebe is from the personal interview Donn gave in mentioning her.Nicholas Nastrusnic (talk) 00:52, 23 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
