I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Though we all make goofy mistakes, here is what Wikipedia is not. If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to see the help pages or add a question to the village pump. The Community Portal can also be very useful.

Happy editing!

Self reference on the Word Association game

edit

Hi Michael, thanks! I've seen someone else use a user page on the game, but it was a friend's, as I recall. I initially thought it might seem a little Narcissistic of me, but then I figured that I should use the first thing that came to my head, and that was me. Sorry to hear someone beat you to putting your own name in earlier...I hate getting beaten to an association when I've got a good one. Phileas 08:43, 21 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Re: NY 17

edit

Thanks for adding the info to NY 17. I've been trying to restore a lot of the content that was removed when an editor believed that the I-86 article was more important than the NY 17 article, so any additions to NY 17 are welcome. Thanks again. --TMF T - C 16:26, 4 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Baseball diagram

edit

That diagram with the "1st" and "2nd" was stolen from another article anyway. If you'd like to make one with either the traditional defensive abbreviations, or even the 1 through 9 that are used for scoring (such as the ones scorebooks and programs usually have), that would be great. Thanks for the help. -- dakern74 (talk) 00:30, 7 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

License tagging for Image:Frierson_as_matty.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Frierson_as_matty.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 09:13, 2 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free media (File:Nakednewslogo.png)

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Nakednewslogo.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:30, 18 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Armando Galarraga

edit
  • Thanks for the correction on Koufax's perfect game. I agree with you that there's no reason why a perfect game shouldn't have its own separate article, although from a practical standpoint, there are few such games that would need to be described separately from the pitcher himself. My view is that, to the extent that a pitcher is "honored" on Wikipedia, it is more of an honor to have his crowning achievement fully described within his article rather than to say nothing more than a sentence and "Full article: Perfect game of so-and-so". Koufax, like Cy Young, Catfish Hunter, and U.S. Senator Jim Bunning, was famous for more than a single game, so a spinoff article is appropriate. Generally, a game, whether it's part of the World Series or a record setting game, can be described within one paragraph and a link could be added. In this instance, I think that the nomination of the Galarraga article was silly, just somebody trying to make a point and wasting a lot of people's time in the process, but that happens all the time. Anyway, thanks for checking that out. Mandsford 19:19, 6 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Word association deletion

edit

Nope, there was no discussion. See Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2010 October 25. Thryduulf (talk) 16:50, 30 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Well, technically there was a discussion but the word association pages were not officially part of the nomination (one commenter said everything in sandbox space should go), were not tagged, and page authors were not notified. Nor were any of the previous discussions taken into account (commenters at the low participation mfd were not even made aware that it existed). This is why I initiated the DRV. Thryduulf (talk) 10:06, 1 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

The main WA page has over 34,000 revisions(!) and so it may require a steward to undelete it (I think that this is because (un)deleting that many revisions puts strain on the servers). I'll leave a note for whoever undeleted the others. Thryduulf (talk) 22:59, 1 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for uploading File:Carrierclassicpregame.png. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright and licensing status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can verify that it has an acceptable license status and a verifiable source. Please add this information by editing the image description page. You may refer to the image use policy to learn what files you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. The page on copyright tags may help you to find the correct tag to use for your file. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please also check any other files you may have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Eeekster (talk) 01:47, 12 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

A barnstar for you!

  The Graphic Designer's Barnstar
For recreating the various Great Lakes Circle Tour markers as SVGs, I award you this barnstar. Keep up the great work, you've already made valuable contributions to WP:USRD. Imzadi 1979  01:55, 26 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
P.S. I updated the shade of green used to correspond to Pantone 342, which is the color specified in the MUTCD. I also cloned the LHCT marker in brown since I remembered that there is a spur along M-134 on the ferry to Drummond Island. Imzadi 1979  01:56, 26 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
P.P.S. The Seaway Trail marker is fair-use. As far as we've determined, it is under copyright from the group behind the trail designation. I uploaded it on enwp with the fair-use information and tagged it for deletion on Commons. The old guidance from the Shields Department was to create PNGs only at a low resolution for copyright-protected markers, but SVG is actually fine so long as we don't display them larger than needed on the articles. So the SVG is still A Good Thing™ to have. Imzadi 1979  02:10, 26 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for my first Barnstar!
  • I completed the Michigan Heritage Route signs, but no one has mentioned if they are PD or fair use, so I have not uploaded them yet. The colors are from the gifs, which I know can be unreliable, so change if you like.
  • I am thinking it might work better if I did the creating, and just e-mail them to you and let you handle the uploading. I am not good at writing appropriate use notices on the uploads. Any thoughts on this?
   → Michael J    02:47, 26 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
They are PD. The GIFs are marked PD as MDOT has specifically stated, and I've logged in an OTRS ticket, that any highway markers they use are PD. You can copy the descriptions from the exiting GIFs here on enwp when you upload them to Commons, which would also copy the PD notice and OTRS ticket information. Imzadi 1979  02:53, 26 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

If you're up for it, File:NFSB marker.gif is the current GIF-format graphic for the National Forest Scenic Byway marker. It's PD as a work of the US Forest Service, hosted on Commons, and could use a SVG replacement. However, there is no rush, so if you have other projects, do them first by all means. Notification of automated file description generation

edit

Your upload of File:Brokencircle.jpg or contribution to its description is noted, and thanks (even if belatedly) for your contribution. In order to help make better use of the media, an attempt has been made by an automated process to identify and add certain information to the media's description page.

This notification is placed on your talk page because a bot has identified you either as the uploader of the file, or as a contributor to its metadata. It would be appreciated if you could carefully review the information the bot added. To opt out of these notifications, please follow the instructions here. Thanks! Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Fez (That '70s Show), you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Sabu and Hadji (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Ohio Byway

edit

You did such good work on the Michigan Heritage Route markers, I was wondering if you could remake File:Ohio Byway.png as a SVG? If you can, that would be appreciated! Imzadi 1979  06:57, 28 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

It is done. It is in Commons under the name Ohio Byway sign.svg    → Michael J    10:45, 28 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! Imzadi 1979  01:25, 31 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Up for another one? I extracted File:Alaska Scenic Byway.svg, but it seems that the Alaska DOT&PF built the vector file with a series of raster tiles. Maybe you could work your magic at some point to completely vectorize it? I put up a request at Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Illustration workshop#Alaska Scenic Byway marker. I'm hoping that their solution isn't just to re-export it as a PNG. Imzadi 1979  17:37, 28 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

2014 Downtown Ottawa Shooting

edit

I believe this title is more specific than simply "2014 Ottawa Shooting" since there have been numerous shootings in Ottawa this year.

Also, if you want to change a page title, please move the page so that history is not lost, do not simply cut and paste. If you were starting a new page without knowing that one was already started, then I understand the confusion between our two articles. No problem. -- Kndimov (talk) 18:16, 22 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Photos

edit

I just saw your two-weeks-ago note to Smallbones about the Tunkhannock photo. Would you be at all able to help with getting photos in the region? Check the maps at User:Nyttend/Pennsylvania — thirteen Wyoming County municipalities don't have photos, and there are lots of unillustrated places in surrounding counties: Susquehanna, 26; Bradford, 27; Luzerne, 48; and Lackawanna, 23. Sullivan is fully illustrated, but it's one of just five counties statewide with a photo for each municipality. Smallbones and others of us have been trying to find photos for as many municipalities as possible, but we're still missing images for about 40% of them statewide, and any help you can provide (especially by getting new photos) would be quite appreciated. Nyttend (talk) 06:52, 4 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! Some places don't have distinguished sites; for these, I'll typically try to get either a community building (e.g. a church or the municipal building) or simply a representative scene, which is typically a residential street in a borough or a residential street in a township village, or open countryside in a township or a borough that's largely rural. See Raccoon Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania (scenery), Big Beaver, Pennsylvania (borough building), Wampum, Pennsylvania (commercial district), Marion Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania (scenery), and Conway, Pennsylvania (typical residential neighborhood) for examples of what I mean. Just look for something that can serve as a symbol of the municipality, either because it's an important spot or because it's representative of a scene that's common in the municipality. Thanks for uploading File:Svp russillo.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. Pure Michigan Byway marker

edit

Tomorrow, MDOT officially unveils the signage for the Pure Michigan Byways. Can you recreate that marker, show here, as a SVG that could be used in articles and in the list's infobox? Imzadi 1979  20:56, 15 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

I will try, but that is a very low resolution image. The road and the text can be done, but the trees are a bit fuzzy.    → Michael J    23:09, 15 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
There's another version here as well. Imzadi 1979  02:01, 16 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
I have created it. However, I do not know the copyright status for uploading to Commons. Is it the same as for the Heritage Routes? Or should I just upload it and you can edit the status?    → Michael J    05:10, 16 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
Yes, same as the MHR markers. An MDOT rep has stated that their highway markers, which would include this, are PD. Because it uses the Pure Michigan logo, it should note that it has trademarked content. Imzadi 1979  05:40, 16 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
So yes, just add {{trademarked}} to the license template(s) from the Michigan Heritage Route markers and note that the Michigan Economic Development Corporation has a trademark on the Pure Michigan logo component of the marker. Imzadi 1979  03:04, 18 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
@Imzadi1979: The sign is uploaded at File:PureMichiganByway.svg. Please check the status to make sure it is worded properly.    → Michael J    21:10, 25 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thanks you, Michael J. I adjusted some things to copy the templates as they were used on the other markers, and to give you credit for recreating the sign in SVG format. Imzadi 1979  21:19, 25 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

File permission problem with File:Arlington flowers 2016.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Arlington flowers 2016.jpg, which you've attributed to Pat Leitner. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 12:18, 2 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

List of NASCAR tracks

edit

I was looking at IndyCar tracks as I got to wondering if there were any international races held. Indeed there are. I got to looking at NASCAR tracks and I wondered why the location are listed as such. I was thinking of changing it, but I thought to start a discussion on the talk page. I seen you brought this up years ago to no response. The IndyCar track list has the locations listed city, state or province, and country in that order. I understand why you started a discussion, but since there was no response, you should have been bold and changed it. It might seem odd that it's being brought up now. Being bold is what you are encouraged to do even if it gets reverted. Mr. C.C.Hey yo!I didn't do it! 06:58, 23 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of File:Circle sagitta.jpg

edit

The file File:Circle sagitta.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unused, superseded by File:Circle Sagitta.svg.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 16:16, 23 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
