For the sake of learning..

MelbourneStar, the edit that you had to revert (Breedlove-Homeboy); that was reverting vandalism, right? Is that type of situation pretty common? ThanksPetersontinam (talk) 16:37, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

(talk page stalker)Welcome to wikipedia, where it's cool to insert random bits of nonsense wherever you please. Yeah, it's pretty common. That's why a lot of us watch our articles like hawks and/or patrol new pages and recent changes and so on and so forth. ˜danjel [ talk | contribs ] 16:47, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for your reply. Again, trying to learn; Is it bad to have a user's talk page on your watchlist? I have a few and don't want to be a newcomer who is constantly irritating. I checked out the "Stalker" page, found it humorous, but have seen instances where it's frowned upon. Have to say, that watching various talk pages has been helpful towards learning about editing.Petersontinam (talk) 17:11, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, there is WP:WIKIHOUND, which is a bad thing. It's always a good thing, though, to keep watch on the talk pages of your colleagues (i.e., the people with whom you interact regularly on wikipedia). This way, you can help people out with things in their areas of interest, and they can help you out with things in your area of interest.
It's also good to join and watch the pages of projects in which you have an interest. I'm a member of WP:WPSCH (which you might be interested in joining, by the way), WP:EIA, WP:AUS and WP:BTG because I'm interested or edit primarily in pages associated with those projects.
Hey, while I've got your attention, I made an edit [[1]]. I'm sure that to West Bletchley in response to Holne Chase Primary School being AfD'ed and redirected to it's locality. You are relatively more local than I am, so do you think you could review and rewrite (if necessary) the education section for me? Cheers. ˜danjel [ talk | contribs ] 03:11, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Referencr mixed up

First THANK YOU for fixing my reference...I was still struggling for a half hour on how to do it and then I saw that you went ahead. But Ref#21 has a kid cudi article instead of the HCMA article, which is weird because the typed words are for HCMA. Could you please take a look at it? thank youPetersontinam (talk) 01:37, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

And in the meantime I am studying how you put it in...I feel like such a dope.Petersontinam (talk) 01:40, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Scratch that..don't know why it was showing wrong, but now it is perfect. You rock!Petersontinam (talk) 01:41, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

(edit conflict) Petersontinam you're not a "dope". You are a "newbie" :) I can tell you I was once at your stage... so were the other Wikipedian's you've so far met. I think you'll get the hang of it, sooner than later. If you need any help/assistance, my talk page is right here :)
When you want to reference something, add this to the content..maybe at the end of the sentence.. <ref>Link to source goes here</ref> . That should work :) -- MSTR (Chat Me!) 01:47, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
Thank you. If I could push it a bit further...On other references I've tried to study, they have the name of the author and/or a shortened version of the article name...along with the symbols that I don't know how to use properly yet. Is there a page that explains all the different things that should or could be inside the reference markers? Then I could stop bugging people :)Petersontinam (talk) 02:04, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
I think this may be the best place to learn about referencing: Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners. I'm not too sure about the symbols though. Sorry there. But in regards to "bugging" people - if you're trying to learn something, "bug" all you want - or until you understand :) -- MSTR (Chat Me!) 02:31, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Schubert Symphony No. 3

Thanks for the welcome; I'm far from new, but I just resurrected an old account to get around a mysterious new IP block. Not sure why it's there; apparently I share an address with a vandal (or my contributions to various articles on classical music while not logged in were not appreciated, despite being researched and within my definite area of expertise as a conductor). Anyway. Your welcome message thanked me for my edit to the page Symphony No. 3 (Schubert), but you also removed the content of that edit. May I ask what was wrong with it? Thanks. Ra56 (talk) 03:40, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Update: found a message from you on my talk page; is insight garnered from professional expertise and familiarity with the music under discussion insufficient? Ra56 (talk) 03:48, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

I can go find a liner note writer who heard the same thing I did; I think Michael Trapp drew the same conclusion in his notes on Günter Wand's recording of Schubert's Complete Symphonies with the Kölner Rudfunk-Sinfonie-Orchester, but I don't see how that makes it more legitimate. Ra56 (talk) 04:00, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) (strikes again) Cite this, then no probs. :) ˜danjel [ talk | contribs ] 04:15, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Also worth noting that nothing on that page is cited, and that the vast majority of the information added can't even be traced to a definite user. Plus, it's not terribly well-written or insightful. But I don't see the point in adding my insight to the page, because it seems I'm held to a higher standard than the original writer, whose personal insight was acceptable despite the fact that mine isn't. Maybe I'm getting bitter, but it seems I have better luck making positive contributions when I don't try to participate in the community by logging in first. How do you expect to have analysis of music if people aren't permitted to analyze it? Ra56 (talk) 04:05, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Oh, and I cannot fathom that such a simple observation (which really goes no farther than elaborating on the information already present) is "likely to be challenged." Ra56 (talk) 04:10, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Your observation does not fall under that essay (non-policy). Your observation is an opinion however. I could have a different one, should I add that to the article? No. -- MSTR (Chat Me!) 04:28, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

See, that's the trouble. To a trained musician, my observation really is that obvious. To a layperson, the resemblance is worth pointing out, and it would be interesting to someone in the field who's not familiar with the work in question. Of course, it's even clearer in the Sixth Symphony in some respects, but adding it there would be equally futile, as I'm sure now that I've mentioned it you'll go delete it if I write anything. Ra56 (talk) 04:45, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

That's great to know. Really it is. But where in WP:OR does it say you can write in an observation - without proof? Defeats the whole purpose of sources, doesn't it? -- MSTR (Chat Me!) 04:48, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

From the liner notes of Schubert: The Complete Symphonies, conducted by Günter Wand with the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra (this section of notes by Rolf-A. Dimpfel):

"Schubert's third symphony (early summer of 1815) incorporates his impressions of Rossini, who was attracting so much attention in Vienna at that time that not even Beethoven war impervious to it."

Is that not a citation? Ra56 (talk) 04:51, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Darien Angadi

Hi I have been trying to update Darien Angadi my late brother's page but have not got any published references for my new and more accurate info. How can I put myself and my sister down as reliable reference? Thanks Dominic Angadi — Preceding unsigned comment added by Darienangadi (talkcontribs) 11:50, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

Unfortunately, at this stage you won't be able to. Wikipedia does not accept Original Research ~ which is what your edit is. I'm not saying that yourself and your sister don't know what you two are saying - however, when it comes to sources it needs to be a reliable source (News media; book; other internet source). If you were permitted to add the content, Policy: WP:ABOUTSELF, would have to be changed. So if you can, try find reliable sources that have been published. Why is a centre not having an article a justification for deleting it? Red links are a good way of getting new articles written. 59.167.126.21 (talk) 20:59, 14 January 2012 (UTC)

Usually, I don't add centers that have no article. Redlinks are OK, but I don't see the point of them if notability cannot be asserted or is hard to assert at the moment.Jasper Deng (talk) 21:08, 14 January 2012 (UTC)

Good catch...

Good catch on that good faith edit (Ben Breedlove), but I wonder...is it time to update the numbers yet? I think it said once a month. Personally, I wish there was a proper way to add into the article that there are thousands of messages left daily to him still...even this far away from the initial loss. I know, it ends up sounding like a memorial, but what do you think? BTW, the Children's Cardiomyopathy Foundation told me that they were trying to include Ben in their next newsletter. Petersontinam (talk) 05:19, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

It was updated a week ago, a lot has probably happened since then - however, should we wait until CCF make their newsletter, and then we update the article all at once? BTW, that's "music to our ears", hearing that CCF may make a newsletter addressing Breedlove ~ It just may be useful for the article! Thank you, -- MSTR (Chat Me!) 05:56, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
Just removed a comma in the article...didn't see it before. Waiting for the newsletter is a good idea, I think. Sheila Gibbons (Communications Manager) emailed me and said their organization had been very affected by Ben's story. The next newsletter was already planned out and includes a story on Elizabeth Craze (The youngest surviving person to receive a heart transplant)...they are hoping to include Ben on this one, but it may have to wait until the next newsletter where he can be the focus. If it is not included in this one, we can always go ahead with other edits until it is available. I will double check Sheila's email and see if she said exactly when the newsletter is coming out. I looked at Elizabeth Craze's page here and immediately thought it needs to be expanded. So I found some info (lots of interesting info) at Standford School of Medicine (Standford did the operation) and am hoping that even though it is not a news media source, that it can still work for references. Thanks. Petersontinam (talk) 06:15, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
Hey, looked at her (Sheila's) email again and it just isn't clear...she said that they are trying to include Ben in the next newletter, so it may not be. BTW, can you look at my addition to the article? Also, I still am having problems with referencing properly. It's not helping that many users do it differently, but I seem to be boneheaded with this in general when it comes to the series of language for citing, linking to website, etc. Frustrated. Hi, about your recent revert. You may know a great deal more about this than I do but Annie Matthews if a niece must have been illegitimate and may otherwise have been his housekeeper's daughter, whichever/whatever her origin she was, as his ward and heiress, given an honoured position in local Society and has many descendants. Do you know more? Eddaido (talk) 08:23, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

Apologies, but I am not understanding, what you are asking. Are you able to re-word your question? Sorry, and thank you, -- MSTR (Chat Me!) 08:25, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
Someone inserted a mention of her into the article and you reverted it - remember? Eddaido (talk) 08:30, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
I do! :) The sentence was not only unsourced - but the individual, being Annie, is not notable. Is there anything else? -- MSTR (Chat Me!) 08:32, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
That's really nice that you do, you're so slow to catch on! You might have been a descendant! Annie was the subject's only surviving child, deserving a mention on that account only. But I see she has grandchildren in WP and this is her spouse Seymour Thorne George. How did you come to the item? Just flashing past or are you interested in Grey? Eddaido (talk) 09:14, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
I'm sorry, but that is not how Wikipedia works. She may be married to the worlds most notable person - that doesn't make her any more notable than she already is - which isn't at all. Also, that sentence was in violation of a core policy, known as No Original Research. I came accross the item, by "flashing past", as you say. Thank you, -- MSTR (Chat Me!) 09:18, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
My! there's a reaction. Annie is in all the standard biographies (as his niece, and as his "niece") and so is her spouse etc. I raised the issue because I thought you were interested in the article (Australia's history is involved) but now you have explained you just "dropped in" (why?) and I now let the matter drop. Eddaido (talk) 09:32, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
I'm absolutely confused, at where you got the idea that editors are only allowed/supposed to edit articles that they are interested in, here at Wikipedia. I can edit anything I want at my own discretion, just like you, and anyone else is. Thank you, -- MSTR (Chat Me!) 09:35, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
Then you are very easy to confuse or anxious to claim confusion. My approach was kinda sideways in case you had personal reasons to suppress the information. I'm now aware of your sensitivities! Eddaido (talk) 09:47, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
("She may be married to the worlds most notable person - that doesn't make her any more notable than she already is - which isn't at all.") Here's someone with her very own article (not just a passing mention) because of who she's married to Michelle Obama Eddaido (talk) 09:51, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
No, I'm just stating the facts, that is all. Now is there anything else? because this looks like it's going sideways. On the note of Michelle Obama, Take a read of this ~ Michelle's position as First Lady is notable in its own right, unlike Annie's. -- MSTR (Chat Me!) 09:53, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

Breedlove article nominated for deletion

Nomination was removed, not done according to policy. Petersontinam (talk) 17:31, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

Do you think we should propose Policy on "Deletion Re-nomination time frame?" Something that has a guideline...it wastes everyone's time if debates have to repeat over an article that isn't even 2 months old. To me it seems that the arguments will be the same and it would be fruitless to spend that time and energy on rehashing it so soon. Plus, it stops vindictive or payback measures from happening just "because they can." Let me know, please. Have a good day. Petersontinam (talk) 14:12, 23 January 2012 (UTC)
Mhmmm... an RfC perhaps? I'd be interested in doing that, Good idea, I'll ask around, and see what others think....whether or not it would be possible :) Thank you, -- MSTR (Chat Me!) 12:37, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi. Re your note about legal threats (article headed Cabair) not tolerated in articles, sorry I am new to wikipedia. I was just making a factual statement that legal action is already contemplated in relation to some comments on here but I note the comment and will not do this again.

I have a problem though. I am a new director of Cabair (along with two other - ie there is not a sole director) and many of the statements being made on here are not correct. I have not tried to hide the past of the previous Cabair, but some of the things being said about old and new directors, ownership and use of creditor monies is not correct and needs to be corrected. I tried to correct again this morning but some new incorrect comments are added again.

Any suggestions about how we can have the correct information or do I just have to leave it incorrect? Any guidance/assitance appreciated. Thanks Swatkins1964 (talk) 17:06, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

BroNYCon article nominated for deletion

Yes hello. I'm from the My Little Pony WikiProject, I recently saw you removed the article for deletion box. Right now the article is a mess with a citation from a finnish newspaper from 2009, the convention started in 2011 and the citation link doesn't mention the brony phenomenon or MLP at all. The article also advertises for an upcoming event, also frowned on. I would remove these to clean up the article but then the category box would be bigger than the article, it's best to just delete.

There are other problems with the article too, like citing the development team for an upcoming fan-made game which could also be seen as not notable until it's released and advertising. There is already a wikipedia article for this game which it should link to instead, rather than attempting to increase the article size with an unnecessary citation for the sake of one. Shortening the article further.

The NYC article mentioning the tiny (700 is very small by convention standards) group of fans really doesn't make it notable, if it did wikipedia would be littered with articles on every protest group mentioned in a newspaper. It is there simply to pander to the fans and is best left to a 3rd party wiki site that allows this type of advertising. incog (talk) 14:22, 26 January 2012 (UTC)

Does not look like an advert to me. What really matters, is the reliable sources outlining these multiple events ~ which not all appear to be in violation of Chrystal. Hi. I can ask you a similar question, like why wasn't there the appropriate sources, to begin with? Also, on a side note, notability must be corroborated with reliable sources - secondary - to the subject, not primary. -- MSTR (Chat Me!) 09:30, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

What do you know about the artictle I wrote So Many Ways (Warren G song). What is your problem?!?!Are you around here only to delete pages?!?!Learn that I have the significant information I should have in order to make this article!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by JimmyzzzX (talkcontribs) 17:49, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi, and welcome to Wikipedia. First off, I have no problem at all. Now that that is out of the way, the So Many Ways (Warren G song) article, is missing it's crucials: reliable sources. At this stage, the article only has one source, which looks like an advertisement. This minor hit, as described in the article, has little to no notability. That can be changed, however. With the appropriate sources. Thank you -- MSTR (Chat Me!) 00:27, 26 January 2012 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Valerio Corte

Hello MelbourneStar. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Valerio Corte, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: The article makes a credible assertion of importance or significance, sufficient to pass A7. Hi and welcome to Wikipedia! I have removed the Speedy Deletion tag; however replaced it with a articles for deletion tag. The article itself, does not seem notable ~ that's shown from the sources it uses (Facebook etc). A way to make the article notable, is to find independant reliable sources to corroborate notability. -- MSTR (Chat Me!) 06:45, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

Darien Angadi

I appreciate the time and work you put in to ensure the facts on these pages are correct. But we are concerned that the page about Darien, our late brother, is incorrect and in some ways offensive. We cannot find sources on the internet which corroborate the facts, because all sources have aligned with Wikipedia and the incorrect date of death. If all sources are checked, how did you find this date of death in the first place? As we have repeated, he died on December 5th 1981 - over 2 years before you state. There were obituaries in the Ham and High after his funeral at St John's Parish church in Hampstead that are not available on internet. He died before the TV series Muck and Brass in which he acted came out. One of the reviews of the series in early 1982 (written by Chris Dunkley)mentioned Darien's acting and his suicide. Work did not "dry up" as is mentioned and this wasn't the cause of his depression. Our family finds this offensive and if we cannot correct these errors, please remove the entry entirely.Darienangadi (talk) 00:02, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

It is general-accepted practice to consistently update images of celebrities to the more recent ones. The image you reverted is from 2009 which is 3 years ago when Miley was still on Hannah Montana. I changed it back and hope you stop reverting.--TheBigNatural (talk) 13:47, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

Dear person Vandalism would be if you insult the person on their user page. So stop policing other peoples user pages, they are capable of watching their own backs without your authoritarian interference. If you put a non-sequitur on a user page it is merely to humble said user not insult them. Regarding the Sandringham Line updated info.

Yep, I'm new to adding information to wikipedia.

But those are valid sources from essentially the whole public, as it is common knowledge that trains run every 15 mins at x time, and every 20 mins on weekends, etc. How can I source a common fact the whole community knows of?

I could source the Metlink timetable (I'd have to source http://www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au/route/view/12), if that helps? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 114.77.3.2 (talk) 12:35, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi and welcome to Wikipedia.
With the timetable ~ other than source concerns, it would be best if the timetable remains out of the article, as Wikipedia is not a brochure or a timetable. The times can be mentioned, but the whole section devoted to a timetable shouldn't be included. On the 'whole community knows' ~ I'm part of that community hence my Wikipedia username ;)
If there is anything else, just ask me :D -- MSTR (Chat Me!) 12:42, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

Where would I put the timetable frequencies under then? Which section? Because if you were to check out the (British) Network Rail railway station pages, they mostly have frequencies sections in them. And these frequencies will not change significantly anytime soon, if not simpler than todays confusing timetable Metro runs, so it doesn't hurt to add them in? P.S. It takes 28-30 minutes to Flinders Street direct (not city loop), it varies because Metro added a couple of minutes onto the train times in peak hours, back in May 2011 revision of the timetable and 28 minutes in non-peak hours.

Also, there are 4 tracks at Sandringham, you just have to count them physically there, how can I prove otherwise that there's 4 tracks, and that it stables 4 trains overnight? I've been at Sandringham Station after the last train and before the first train departs and there is always 4 trains stabled overnight just by physically looking at it. How can that be sourced?

There are 4 buses that depart from outside Sandringham station, can you source that? Again its common knowledge in the community that they depart from outside the station.

Finally regarding late night services section, trains do return to the city after the last scheduled service on Friday and Saturday nights, as there is no physical space in the stabling facilities to store them overnight, hence I added a mention of that. Again you will not find this anywhere in writing, but from the view of the public, and even the word of station staff, can you source them? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 114.77.3.2 (talk) 12:52, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

With the number of tracks ~ no reference will be required; however the issue is just with the timetable schedule. Wikipedia articles should generally avoid specifics in the case of train departures; train arrivals etc. trust me you're not the only one to bring this issue up :) would you believe me of I told you I had the exact same issue when I started here? Yep, I did :D Anyway, barring that, it's 12am here ~ school in a couple hours :/ ~ so if there are any further questions, ask them here (or at another editors talk page) and I'll get back to you asap! Good night ;) -- MSTR (Chat Me!) 13:01, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

Can you leave the bus section and that 2 trains begin their journey from Middle Brighton in the morning peak? I think some people would find that interesting fact about Middle Brighton. Trains are timetabled to reach Flinders Street Station between 28-30 minutes also. I have school soon too, need to sleep first, 12am here.

Thank you for your advice,

Unfounded revert

Hi Melbourne Star! You have reverted a correction I made to the article Sándor Petőfi about German and not French being the dominant language of theatre in Hungary at the time. I have now re-corrected it and added a reliable source, as you requested. Still I, must say that a "citation needed" tag from your part would have been much more appropriate. I guess that you don't know anything about Hungary and Hungarian history, so you didn't realize what obvious hogwash the claim was that French was the theatre language in the country at the time. (I mean, why not Swedish or Chinese??) So please be more careful with reverts of corrections you don't know the background of - especially if the corrector gives reasons for them in the notes, as I did. Lumendelumine (talk) 12:26, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, and it's also new to me that you need a citation for the birth of a person who has an entry on a WP page in another language (like Petőfi's son Zoltán: http://hu.wiki.x.io/wiki/Pet%C5%91fi_Zolt%C3%A1n, whose name is btw also mentioned as "child" in the English-language WP). The article is probably full of unfounded claims, but this is not one of them.... Lumendelumine (talk) 12:37, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for finding reliable sources to corroborate your edits. Please note that when adding content to Wikipedia, you are responsible for finding sources for the content you add - not others. I could have tagged the paragraph with multiple Citation Needed tags, that would be ignored for months - but instead, being bold is the way to go, and I reverted the sentence per one of Wikipedia's core policies, No Original Research. "Present" in italics (L&O: SVU characters page)

Don't you think it's a bit inconsistent to italicize "Present" for a select group of characters rather than all? The reason I removed the italics in the first place is that they are a bit distracting, and I fail to see the purpose of using them in the first place. So can we reach an agreement here? Either every character has "present" in italics or doesn't. Personally, I'm voting for the latter. Davejohnsan (talk) 22:56, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

Call me stupid...but I really think we've had this same convo before...maybe I'm losing it ;D Having italics seperates the words from the numbers...if that makes any sense. This article follows similar procedures to sub-articles (Alex Cabot; Casey Novak; Jack McCoy etc etc) if you see in their infoboxes, if they are presently on the show, they have a "present" with Italics. 1999-present; 1999-present. Looking into it now, I'm not too fussed. If you still believe it should be with non-italics, we'll make the changes accordingly. -- MSTR (Chat Me!) 11:49, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
We have had this conversation before; don't worry about your sanity just yet. I understand that it's supposed to be separate the numbers from words, but it's really more of a distractor if you ask me. Plus, look at non-L&O articles -- I can't find a single one that uses an italicized "present". And as for the articles you mentioned... didn't you make those changes yourself? :P Davejohnsan (talk) 18:00, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
Aplogies, head has been somewhere else lately. Ah, if you think it should be changed, to without the italics, then proceed with the changes. I won't stand in the way :D -- MSTR (Chat Me!) 06:28, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
