New Article on South Durras, NSW

edit

I have started this article and I am not too sure what to put and I thought you could give me a hand. I know you specialise in Sydney articles, I would appriciate any help you could give me. --Loy Wong (talk) 00:09, 19 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

G'Day Loy
My suggestion is that you should pick an article on one of the towns nearby. Go into edit mode on the page and copy all the info. Add that info into your article and make the relevant changes that apply to that town. That would be a good start.
You can then add more details as you do more research. The Local Council websites can provide some useful info but make sure it's not a direct copy and quote it as a reference.
By the way, I moved your article to South Durras, New South Wales so that it conforms to the standard naming convention for towns. If you have any more questions, let me know. J Bar (talk) 01:14, 19 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have added some info to that article, and I wondered if you had any more ideas about what I could add. P.S.- Thanks a million for your inspiration, it was a big help!

--Loy Wong (talk) 03:35, 19 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

We have a list of standard headings that we use on the Sydney suburb articles. These might be a guide for the sort of information we include. A section on History is usually followed by Commercial Area, Transport, Schools, Churches, Population etc. Some of the best articles are Summer Hill, New South Wales, Parramatta, New South Wales, Kogarah, New South Wales and the town of Winmalee, New South Wales. These articles might give you some more good ideas. J Bar (talk) 05:00, 19 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

I might be travelling there in the upcoming weeks and I would like to take some pictures to add to the article, do you have any ideas on what I should take, and are there any rules on what the pictures are of?

Also, i've seen you now look after articles on the NSW South Coast! --Loy Wong (talk) 06:38, 20 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

The important landmarks are usually the best things to photograph. Historic buildings such as the Town Hall, Post office, Court house, Churches or Schools are a good start. Otherwise, a picture of the main street or the town centre can also be worth adding to an article. That's what we try to do with the Sydney suburb articles, see Arncliffe, New South Wales, Randwick, New South Wales, Ashfield, New South Wales. It's also a good idea to post your photos in Wikimedia Commons. You need to go here and sign up (as "Loy Wong") and then you click on "Upload file" on the left and upload your files as per normal. You can use categories like for Sydney-related photos and for railway station pics. This will save those users who want to use them on other projects a lot of time having to download your photos and then reupload them in other projects. Sth Durras

edit

Hi. I saw your messages to JBar about the Sth Durras article. I work on the suburbs articles too and I'd like to make a suggestion. What these articles are sometimes lacking in is references. All articles are supposed to have references to back up the info, but it's often lacking in these articles. So, if you want positive suggestions, make sure you have refs to back up your info, and put it in the article, with footnotes. Footnotes are important. It's not as good if you just have a list of books at the end of the article. We're supposed to provide "in-line citations", which means footnotes. Hope this helps.

Sardaka (talk) 11:10, 21 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Me again. On the Sth Durras article, I was wondering what happened to durras. is it a separate town from Sth Durras or what? Some of my atlases don't even show a Sth Durras, just Durras. Was wondering what the saituation is, and whether it's worth including Durras in the article Sardaka (talk) 07:09, 25 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Durras

edit

Was thinking it should be worth saying something about Durras, if only to avoid confusion, just spelling the situation out a bit more clearly. If I can get them confused, other people might too.

Durras

edit

Hi again. I went to Paddy Palins today and checked the topographic map, which is an official, authoritative guide to the area. There's one called specifically "Durras".

With the developed areas, the one at the south end is called Durras. The next one up, 1 kilometre nth, is Durras Lake. The next one nth again is called Durras North.

Durras (the southernmost one) has Murramarang National Park immediately south of it, and Benandarah State Forest immediately to the west.

Durras North has Murramarang NP immediately north of it.

The map in question is "Durras Topographic Map 8926-1S." You can get them at Paddy Palins if you're interested. It would be worth your while.

Sardaka (talk) 09:12, 5 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Paddy Palins

edit

Paddy Palins is an outdoor shop in the city, where you can get topographic maps etc, but apparently you already have it. Haven't been to Durras myself, but the map shows 3 residential areas: one down south, one in the middle and one a little north of the lake. Separated by a kilometre or so in each case, and a stretch of beach. Sardaka (talk) 08:53, 6 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Just a technicality - the Geographical Names Register of the Geographical Names Board of New South Wales is the only really official source on NSW place names. Secondary to that are the Department of Lands Maps (what used to be known as Central Mapping Authority maps)... these are probably the maps that places like Paddy Palins would sell.
You can access a lot of the information online as well. According to these sources, Duras and South Durras are basically the same. The Geographic Names Board uses an Australian map datum, but if you convert it to WGS84 you can look it up in Google Maps.
The GNB puts Durras at -35.665096, 150.301188 and South Durras at -35.662318,150.2923. Both co-ordinates refer to the same village, the one known as South Durras (in fact, the co-ordinates for Durras and technically south of those for South Durras).
Basically in the real world, you have South Durras, then slightly north on the sand spit there's Durras Lake (the lake and the locality, which I think is just a caravan park and is included as part of South Duras as far as the ABS data is concerned) and finally on the northern side of the lake there's Durras North.
You're right Sardaka, the Lands map does show South Durras as simply "Durras" but on road signs, National Parks materials, commercial websites and the NRMA maps, you'll find "South Durras" used. Ultimately we're talking about a combined residential population of less than 600 people here. -- Rob.au (talk) 14:51, 26 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Nope. If threats were made to a user that were likely to have physical import, the user would be blocked per WP:HARASS and the Wikimedia Foundation notified, they may choose to notify the police and this has been done before. In certain cases outside bodies may be notified if there's a lengthy pattern of abuse or harassment - for instance with IP vandals the Foundation might want to contact their ISP for terms of use violation. But for common-or-garden vandalism, no - that gets reported to WP:AIV or WP:3RR depending on what exactly is happening, and the user is warned, then blocked from editing if they do not stop. How to Translate an Article

edit

I would like to translate the South Durras article into Cantonese. Do you know how you do that? Cheers, --Loy Wong (talk) 02:05, 28 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Sorry. No idea. J Bar (talk) 03:30, 28 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi!,

I am just calling to clear some things up. When I asked you how to translate the article into Canto. I ment I would do the actual translating, but you tell me how to start the new page for it. I wasn't sure by what you ment so I thought I would just check.

--Loy Wong (talk) 11:14, 28 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

To start a new article, you can type the title in the Search box. If there is no existing article then you can start one from there. I'm not sure how to link an existing article to a translated article though. I'm sure there's some articles on wikipedia that advise how this is done. You could try looking around wikipedia and some of the projects for more information. Sorry, i can't be more helpful. J Bar (talk) 01:57, 7 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

More Questions about loading Pictures

edit

Hi, I was on the commons site, looking how to upload the pix of South Durras. I still don't know how to load them up and I wasen't sure about how to name the files.

--Loy Wong (talk) 06:06, 7 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

You need to sign up as a user on wikimedia commons (create login), in the same way you have on wikipedia. Then you go to Upload file and follow the instructions. I suggest you give them a descriptive name that makes it easy to find if people do a search. For example, South Durras Public School or South Durras Park or South Durras Anglican Church etc... J Bar (talk) 03:13, 13 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I've loaded one picture of the Fire Brigade, but now I can't get it to link to the article. Do you know how I do the link?
here is the picture-[1]--Loy Wong (talk) 10:06, 13 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I've loaded it for you, so you can go into edit mode and see how that's done. Basically you use square brackets and specify the photo's title <<Image:20080323 01.JPG>> the location on the page <<|right>> the thumbnail for the caption <<|thumb>> and the caption <<|Rural Fire Service, South Durras>>. You can also include a photo in the infobox, next to image= and a caption next to caption=. Cheers. J Bar (talk) 01:05, 14 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I noticed your meesages at JBar's page. Are you getting anywhere?

I noticed that the pic of the fire brigade doesn't yet have a licensing tag. To fix that, go into editing mode and where, at the bottom, it has a message in brackets -- blah blah blah -- delete the message inside the brackets and replace it with: GFDL-self. This means it's your own work and you're licensing others to use it. (Look in the edit mode of this talk page to see how it's done.)

To insert the pic in the article, do it something like this:

File:20080323 01.JPG
Durras Fire Brigade

This will put the shot on the right-hand side of the page. Insert it wherever you like. But I suggest you give it a descriptive file name. Especially at Commons, where non-descriptive names are not allowed. Good luck.

Your Opinion on the South Durras Article

edit

Hi!,

Sorry I haven't talked to you in a long time. I am messaging to ask what you think of the article since another user thinks it's not worthy of being kept.

I appreciate your feedback.

--Loy Wong (talk) 00:30, 8 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

It's not up to me to decide whether an article should stay or be removed. I can understand people's concerns about having to many articles and it might make sense to include the information on South Durras on an existing article on Durras. However, if you can provide enough information on South Durras to justify it remaining as a separate article, then you would have a good argument for keeping it. Adding a photo or more facts about the town would help. Cheers. J Bar (talk) 01:33, 8 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Regarding your reply, you mentioned that there was a separate article for Durras. I tried to find it but couldn't. If you can find it, can you please send me a link. Also, I have more photos from Sth. Durras that I have to load, but after I tried to include one, it was deleted due to it not being registered correctly. Can you please explain to me how to do it correctly.
Cheers for now!
Mrs. Lei Loy Wong --Loy Wong (talk) 09:35, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I didn't realise there was no article on Durras. If other editors want to delete this article, there may be a larger article for the region that could include this town along with others. Cheers J Bar (talk) 05:25, 10 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Sorry about the headline!, didn't know what to put.

Just a few things I want to ask: Wikipedia Sydney Meetup- have you ever been? If not we should go sometime. Re: User:767-249ER, I saw this user was pretty nasty to you. Do you know why or where they have gone? Cheers for now, --Loy Wong (talk) 06:00, 20 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello Loy Wong,
No I haven't been to one of the Meetups. I don't know what happened to him after he was barred a number of times. The world soesn't need nasty people, full of hatred like that. Cheers. J Bar (talk) 23:26, 20 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
P.S.
Are you allright?, you don't sound too good. Also, I've noticed that you haven't been editing on here as much as you used to. I was worrying that something had happened to you or someone in your family.
Also, about 767-249ER, would it be o.k. if you shared with me some of the details of the problems you had with this user. One more thing- if there is one on soon, would you consider going to the next Sydney meetup?, and where about in the St. George Area do you live? I live at Oatley. Cheers,--Loy Wong (talk) 03:16, 21 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'm good, thanks. No worries. I participate in a lot of other forums, blogs and social pages besides wikipedia. I've been spending a lot of time socialising on Facebook lately. Wikipedia is anot a socialising site. I've been contributing heaps on Wikipedia but probably not on the aticles that you would see. I monitor all the Sydney suburbs for vandalism.
I don't know about attending a Sydney meetup because I don't see what the benefit would be. Most editors on wikipedia want to remain anonymous and probably for good reason. You can be a victim of cyber-stalking and I have been. So I'd rather not say what suburb I live in. Cheers. J Bar (talk) 03:34, 21 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

How have people been cyber-stalking you? Also, what is your page on facebook?--Loy Wong (talk) 04:49, 21 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

By sabotage and vandalism on pages that I work on and following me around various sites, causing mischief and making abusive comments and derogatory comments. Sorry, but my Facebook page is not related to wikipedia so I won't post personal details here. J Bar (talk) 04:54, 21 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
I am glad that you are cleaver to realise that you have to maintain some boundaries and you are careful about what you say. Do you think the other issues that you had were anything to do with 767-249ER on other sites? --Loy Wong (talk) 03:12, 22 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Photo Question

I am wondering if you have any more photos on Wiki, other than those on your user page? If so can you show me a list?

P.S. Were you taking a picture of Hogben Park at Kogarah the other day?, When I was driving past, I saw someone taking pictures and I thought I might have been you!

No it wasn't me. I haven't taken any photos for ages. No I don't keep a list. My photos have been added to many of the Sydney suburbs articles. Just have a look at the articles. J Bar (talk) 22:07, 30 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi,

I discovered this user, who appears to be the owner of several airlines in Thailand who keeps adding COI edits to the pages, Orient Thai Airlines and One-Two-Go Airlines. He has since been blocked, bus has come back with a sock. I noteified the users who originally warned him but they didn't respond to me.

What do you think?

Question about Watchlist

Hi,

I was looking at the "My Preferences" page and I changed something about my watchlist. Now, it shows all the edits that have been done to the admin vandalism page and none of my other articles. Do you know how I can change it back?

Request reason:

I would like to appeal my block, because I feel that I have done nothing wrong. I have been a rule following editor of Wikipedia for almost a year and during that time, I have never been blocked, warned or have damaged any articles. I also feel that there has been a misunderstanding due to some of the articles I made edits to such as some airlines and airports. I hope that that it is realised that I am only here to do good work and not to cause problems for others.

The relationship that I have with that edit is that user who has been attacking User:J Bar for over a year, is out to attack and taunt any other user who has contact with J Bar, such as myself, and my name isn't the only one there by the way. I have no relationship with that sockpuppet in any way, and I have had issues myself with him before also. That specific edit, I didn't even know it excisted, so I can't possibaly have any connection to him.

Request reason:

To explain thing in a consice manner, I have nothing to do with this long offending sockpuppet. I can not believe that I am being accoused of being a sockpuppet of this user. The evidance that the other users have put foward, in my oppinion, is not enough, because it was one edit by the sockpuppet that was clearly intended to attack me. I don't see how I could have anything to do with that user. Also, I was never blocked in the first place, so how can I be avoiding a block?

Decline reason:

While I have no problem with the idea that someone happened to attack both you and Onorem, I find it hard to believe that this person would be using the same computer as you - even if you're using a public computer, where perhaps hundreds of people edit from, the chance that one of them would be the one person to attack you seems slim. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 13:41, 19 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
