Cheers for the extended comments. All have either been fixed, responded to, or some maintenance is "under way" :-) Please do revisit. While we don't (of course) have to agree on everything, it's useful for you to challenge us if you disagree with our thinking and who knows, you may persuade us. We're both people who, without flip-flopping, are known to change our minds and U-turn when persuaded by good arguments. --Dweller (talk) 12:20, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
- Btw, hope you don't mind if I suggest it, but have you considered archiving some of this page? --Dweller (talk) 14:05, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
Islands
Thanks for sorting that - see my note to User talk:Pterre. May need to put Grain back in the list like Dogs to say its not an island. I am a bit confused because the Isle of Grain articles says something like "not to be confused with the Isles of Grain" and then locates it in the same place. Made me wonder if there is another one further upstream. Regards Motmit (talk) 07:18, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
ITN
Woah, woah, woah. Kevin, as you are aware I meant nothing by it, and I don't know if you are aware how much of a common practice what I did is. If every time the blurb is tweaked we posted a new blurb in full, the page would be 50% longer than it is already. Several such tweaks had been suggested that were by no means unreasonable, and I added the changes. Perhaps it would be better if you did not sign your proposal and instead posted it with your comments of support underneath it followed by your signiture. That way the blurb can be seen as more or less community property, which IMHO it sort of is. The only time we should repost the blurb is when someone has an entirely new take on its wording. Simple linking shouldn't be considered such a massive change. -- Grant.Alpaugh 11:28, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
Your comment
Your obviously confusing race and religion. The differences are so vast that they can be hardly covered in a thousand articles but to cut it down to a single statement; There is no such thing as a race of Islam. As such your allegation is not only completely unfounded but as the wording is so politically charged it is borderline defamation. I hope that you would take care when throwing around such charges as racially motivated edits. --Lemmey (talk) 20:59, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
- Again Race and nationality have little to do with each other. There is no race of Britishness.
- Furthermore multiculturalism is not some generic all-encomensing 'goodness'. As the world moves closer together it becomes more of a monoculture losing any sense of the distinctive qualities that diversity purportedly holds dear. Already the skylines of the worlds cities are shaped not by the local cultures, traditions, and values of what ever people live in the area but by only the particular decade in which the majority of the skyscrapers were built. There is no such thing as American architecture anymore, no such thing as German literature, French art, or British music. Its all one collective drab. I can travel to almost any country around the world and find a guy driving a Toyota from a suburban townhouse [1] to an office complex where he will sit in a gray cubicle in front of a black IBM laptop sitting next to a beige office phone where he will use Outlook to read his email while drinking Starbucks coffee.
- Additionally what the UK has shown us over the last few years is that while tolerance is good but over-tolerance can lead to consequences. Allowing extremist to preach their explicitly and violently intolerant messages will eventually lead to indoctrination and radicalization of any group that feels itself as being repressed and that will always lead to militanism and terrorism.
- Finally If you can't find an appropriate template I encourage you to use a combination of keystrokes to explain what you are trying to say. --Lemmey talk 00:53, 23 April 2008 (UTC)
You both have said things that you shouldn't have. Lemmey I know it is something of an MO for you to say controversial things, and as a fan of sarcasm I can certainly appreciate it. I think what you said on ITN/C was unfortuately over the line and came from a place of insensitivity. Kevin, who died and made you the PC police? I made my comments about Lemmey and Plasma in public, in hopes of diffusing the situation, but didn't see fit to warn them with good reason. They didn't say anything on the actual WP, just a project page, and these kinds of POV discussions are incouraged in order to make sure WP maintains NPOV. I also think your comments came from a place of insensitivity. Both of you should just drop it and seek to move on. -- Grant.Alpaugh 01:35, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

West Bromwich Albion F.C.
Fair play to you for you reverting Albion's league back to the Championship - I wholeheartedly agree with you as they have not yet been formally accepted into the Premiership (they have to receive a Premier League share or bond from one of the relegated teams I believe), albeit that it is a formality. I made the same revert twice myself but people are just so keen to jump the gun, which is annoying. I may add a comment, but I don't know if it would make any difference. Cheers. --Jameboy (talk) 20:41, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Bostock
I think it's more a case of Palace fans disappointed at his alleged proposed move to Spurs deciding to spread some lies about him. His own article at one point contained this gem:
“ | John is soon due to become one of the most reviled people in football history when he signs for Tottenham Hotspur. He had previously claimed that, as he had grown up as a Palace fan, he wanted to go on to captain the side. This has turned out to be a manipulative lie as he is in fact, as with the vast majority of arrogant young footballers, a moneygrabbing little turd with no integrity whatsoever. A recent survey showed that 100% of Palace fans, and 99% of decent human beings everywhere, hope that "he contracts a particularly formiddable strain of the Ebola virus and dies a slow and painful death". | ” |
Moving Ecuador Province pages
Hi Kevin. Sorry for any trouble I caused in moving the pages.[2] As far as I know, I'm the only one working on WikiProject Ecuador. I revamped the project in hopes that others will take an interest in it. Some of what I've done is listed here. For the most part, I think I've done everything that I can with WikiProject Ecuador and I'll be moving onto a new regional WikiProject. In regards to the name of the provinces, I did post a message at Naming conventions. In any event, feel free to change any of my postings as you see fit. GregManninLB (talk) 15:10, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Serie A top scorer
Check out all the other Serie A top scorers. They have it listed as an individual honour. Maradona also has Argentine league top scorer listed as an honour.
I don't know if there's an award ceremony and a trophy and whatever it is you think is necessary to qualify as an honour. I would be surprised if there isn't some level of official recognition from the Italian football association, though. -- Kvaks (talk) 17:46, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
- OK, sorry if I was hasty on this one. I do think though that honours sections ought to be for awards that are tangible or at least have a recognised title: purely statistical achievements can become very contrived (Torres as the highest scoring overseas footballer in a debut season), so I prefer to steer clear of them unless there is a recognised honour. Are you sure that the contract has not ended? I was under the impression that it had. In any sense, he is not a Villa player anymore. Have you got a source for his contract length, otherwise I think it can be reverted. Regards. Woody (talk) 17:59, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
- It is well known, and not generally required that individual cases are evidenced, that footballers' contracts expire on 30th June. There is an embargo on player transfers until 1st July. UEFA consider him to be a Villa player Kevin McE (talk) 18:12, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

your misunderstanding
Why are we mentioning that the winner 'will not be obliged to participate in it'? That's having half the sentence in our article, the other half in the source. It makes no sense that way. dorftrottel (talk) 13:21, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
- My suggested phrasing is "The winner of Euro 2008 will qualify for the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa, but will not be obliged to participate in it." In what way does that not make sense?
- Because people may ask themselves the consequent question of why we mention that they are not obliged to participate. dorftrottel (talk) 14:19, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
- Firstly, that is nothing to do with motivating, nor is it a misunderstanding on my part, nor is it an issue of making sense. If people have further questions, the reference is there for them to follow. It is clear that the winners may enter the Confederations Cup, but might decide not to: we've mentioned this that because it is the case! Kevin McE (talk) 15:57, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
- Putting it as a foonote seems a sensible compromise, thank you, but please don't swear on editnotes. Kevin McE (talk) 09:28, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

Request
I want someone to make a TOC(Tables of content) template for wikipedia like this[3]. If you know how to make, then please put on your effort as it will be good for wikipedia and its users. *The image is an edited one*. I didn't find any template that would break or split the contents into half and put the other half on right side[4]. This template will utilize the blank space and will make the contents table easily accessible without scrolling down. THANKS. Harryroger (talk) 12:22, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

UEFA European Football Championship
Had to revert your edit, this has been discussed before and on wikipedia we differentiate between existing and former countries. See other wikipedia articles: National team appearances in the FIFA World Cup#Comprehensive team results in each World Cup, Czech Republic national football team, Czechoslovakia national football team, FIFA World Cup and so on. BanRay 11:24, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
- no wikipedia policy says that we have to follow fifa's decisions. Keeping separate records for states that have split into more than one different nation is pretty much universal here and not just in football. Unlike the soviet ice hockey team, that was more or less dominated by russian players, the soviet football team had players from all over the union. And yet even the ice hockey world championship article has separate statistics for the russian, soviet, czech and czchoslovak teams. Anyway, I'm not going to let myself be drawn into an edit war with you. Let's just see what everyone else at wp:footy thinks. BanRay 17:20, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
FIFA Confederations Cup 2009
I noticed that you felt compelled to remove my inclusion of the possible qualifiers out of the main body of the text and into footnotes. My, we are insistent on having things our own way, aren't we, Kevin? Were I feeling particularly petty, I would have undone your edit, noting that it is an "established fact" that these are the only possibilities remaining for these slots. But I don't want to get drawn into another hair-splitting contest with you. --68.97.115.26 (talk) 21:31, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
- I believe I used the words "insistent on...[your] own way," and did not describe your actions as pettiness. But please, don't let me stop you from putting words in my mouth. Also, I did not describe my own edits as improvements...I was simply doing my best to preserve the information already there while accomodating your laudable desire for accuracy. If I were pressed, however, I would say that your edits, by subtracting information, were in fact of detriment to the article, which was why I was so persistent. --68.97.115.26 (talk) 22:17, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

Souvenir Henri Desgrange
Hi - I must confess to being more than a little confused about this. My understanding is that the prize is awarded to the first rider over the highest point in each year's tour, which is normally the Galibier. The Col de la Bonette is the highest point of this year's tour and so this year the prize would be awarded there. The TdF website also seems confused: on the newsfashes for stage 17, they state that Stefan Schumacher won 5,000 Euros for "Souvenir Henri Desgrange" (see at 14.02), but on the stage 16 newsflashes they also state that John-Lee Augustyn is chasing the 5,000 Euros for first place at the highest point of the Tour de France, also known as the "Souvenir Henri Desgrange"(see at 16.38). As you say the PdF file clearly states that the prize is given on the Galibier. Which is right? --Bikeroo (talk) 12:10, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Editnotes becoming of an admin
Before using the lowest form of wit in edit notes, please consider that items stay on ITN for much longer than the relevant picture. Kevin McE (talk) 13:51, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
- And that it can be re-added later. I'm sure there are some readers who don't know what the Tour de France is, but as long as the picture is right there it's seems like a little too much explaining to mention that it's in cycling. One way or another, there's going to be stuff on ITN or elsewhere on the Main Page that cannot be explained fully on the Main Page (for example, the item about India's government sounds Greek to me). However, it's not too much to ask for people to click on the links provided or, at least in this case, look at the picture a few pixels over. -- tariqabjotu 14:02, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Im glad you have given me notice, however I suggest we presented in the discussion section first. I would also like to add that, the section is not simply about it, but rather Technology and Science progress in such country. If it is the section you are suggesting deletion? And if you are unsatisfied, I ask you who has taken the point of objection to give me a 2 day time period to rightfuly fill the section i intended to add. I was securing the sources were to satisfaction. And althought it is of high national pride to the country, it is also very informative, in it's intention to show the countries technological step towards progressing by it's own means. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Blupper92 (talk • contribs) 10:38, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

All of his other edits like this have been reverted by many users over the course of at least 10 months. This is just another way for him to continue his edits and continue with his argument because he is doing it a different way this time. Hubschrauber729 (talk) 21:54, 17 August 2008 (UTC)
- Do you really think mass tagging of hundreds, probably thousands of articles is the best way to go about this? He doesn't even try and discuss reasonable solutions. Even after a dozen people have tried to talk to him about this and come to logical decision. It just makes no sense. Hubschrauber729 (talk) 23:32, 17 August 2008 (UTC)
- I think it's pretty simple. If there is a person under famous past players you can click on their article and read about them. You will then find out what makes them famous. For example on national teams: If a player has more than 50 caps to his name that makes him pretty notable to his national team. And you can find that out on his article. All you have to do is read. An encyclopedia is about reading right? So reading the player articles would make sense now wouldn't it? Hubschrauber729 (talk) 18:12, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

Colchester
Hi Kevin
You may be able to help me with this query given your locale. I've been adding a few "personal life" details to Adam Miller (footballer) and I found out that he grew up in Monkwick - is that a district/suburb of Colchester, a small town/village nearby, or something else entirely? I also found a source that said that later on he lived in "Leafy Grove, Colchester" - is that a district or just the name of a street?
Cheers! -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 08:46, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
- Cheers, I've made the appropriate change to Miller's article. As for the PotY thing, the guy who was suggesting the Gills Featured Topic was not complete without it has now conceded that this is not in fact the case and, given that sourceable info for the last ten years would be very hard to come by and, frankly, I don't think very many fans even care about the award (I certainly don't), I'm just going to let it drop..... -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 10:21, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
- The reason I thought it might be a district, despite the unlikely-sounding name, is that it seemed unlikely that the newspaper would be so specific as to report the road a player lived on. Good job it only extends to players though - I doubt our illustrious chairman would have been too pleased had a journalist reporting on one of his many rants seen fit to include the location of his country pile...... :-) -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 10:31, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

In response to the pronunciation of Albert Jarrett, he was asked how to pronounce his name in a video interview at Brighton and Hove Albion, due to the confusion surrounding this. Obviously, this was in 2004, so it is highly unlikely that the video will still be able, but it's how he pronounces his name. RM-Taylor (talk) 20:52, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
