Please fix existing problems while you edit
editI have been fixing a series of bad edits by an IP editor that "doesn't like Pinyin". I noticed these two changes that you happened to do after the IP had broken the romanizations.
While you are changing things, could you also be checking that things look correct? Otherwise you may accidentally be endorsing/approving bad edits.
First example "Jhongkwóh Iyàu Tàhhsuéh" is not Pinyin. It was changed from "Zhōngguó Yīyào Dàxué". If I can tell the difference - what looks like Pinyin and what doesn't - you should be able to. Please look at the text while you are cut-n-pasting.
The second example sees that you recognized that something was wrong with
- Although its English name is the same as a university in Shenyang, Republic of China, the Chinese name of the mainland university is different: 中國醫科大學.
You fixed "Republic of China" but didn't see the "ROC" problem. Again, check the IP editor's changes.
I don't want to sound "loud" about this, but we all need to be watching very closely at every text we look at. I have found vandalism that was 2.5 years old, simply by seeing something that didn't look right. If you are changing a lot of articles, you have lots of chances to fix problems! :-) Shenme (talk) 05:40, 8 June 2015 (UTC)

Regarding your last edit to Lam Woon-kwong
editHello!
Is it necessary to have the "Contains Chinese" box on this page? I normally wouldn't care, but because the existing infobox is so long (perhaps too long), the gap between the References section and the succession boxes is huge.
Tiny quibble! —A L T E R C A R I ✍ 04:44, 11 May 2017 (UTC)
- I think since it's reasonable to assume this article is still incomplete (standard assumption for all articles on here) that it may seem too far to scroll at the moment, but as the article is fleshed out, this will cease to be an issue. Also, since the article 'does' contain Chinese text, this marker is necessary. 05:16, 11 May 2017 (UTC)

editHi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that you've added some links pointing to disambiguation pages. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Chinese infobox
editThanks for adding to Ma Liu Shui! I do think that in HK place articles there should be both Traditional and Simplified forms in the Chinese infobox and Cantonese, Hakka, and Putonghua/Mandarin all included. One thing I wish is that when the infobox is expanded, that Cantonese is put up top with Hakka second and Mandarin third in the case of Hong Kong articles (to make it clear that Cantonese is dominant in HK). I might propose that in the infobox talk page.
Thanks, WhisperToMe (talk) 13:49, 29 July 2018 (UTC)

- Re this edit I'm aware HK doesn't use simplified (I currently live in Shenzhen and participate in the Wikimedia HK Usergroup) but my understanding is that simplified should be shown anyway to teach non-Chinese users what is the simplified form versus the traditional form. AFAIK all China and Sinosphere (SARs, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Overseas)-related topics should show both forms in the infobox, and with Mainland topics I show the traditional forms. WhisperToMe (talk) 22:24, 2 October 2018 (UTC)
I went ahead and started Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style/China_and_Chinese-related_articles#Should_the_Chinese_infobox_display_both_Simplified_and_Traditional_Chinese_for_all_Greater_China_and/or_Sinosphere-related_subjects,_or_should_it_only_display_the_relevant_ones_per_territory/area? WhisperToMe (talk) 17:03, 9 October 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks, WhisperToMe. However, the discussion I was hoping to have was whether to use each script generally in an article depending on the subject matter, not just in the infobox (although this would definitely be part of it).

"Hong Kong English"
editI note that you have just generated a boilerplate message on my Talk page. The message has been generated by you in response to my reversal of your addition of a language warning on the ALLinHK talk page. The message says that I "changed one or more words or styles from one national variety of English to another". Since it was your edit which performed that very action, it is evident that you could not have intended to issue this particular message; perhaps there was another you might have wanted to use or perhaps you had intended the message for someone else? sirlanz 05:52, 5 December 2018 (UTC)
- I note you are not happy with the inclusion of the word "spoken" in the lede though you have failed twice to provide any edit summary for your Undo action. I invite you to explain what aspect of the reason I gave when making the edit was incorrect. If you believe the scope of Hong Kong English goes wider than just an oral form, then the article can first be enhanced to include material establishing that fact. Once that has been done, the lede can go back to an all-encompassing term. Perhaps you would like to make that contribution? sirlanz 06:05, 5 December 2018 (UTC)
- sirlanz, My comment was left, if you look closely. I marked them with "RV" which is wikipedia shorthand for 'revert vandalism'. Your edit appears to me to have been made in bad faith and done to justify your edits made elsewhere rather than the merits of the article. If you wish to suggest that English in HK is a spoken form only, then it is you who needs to justify the change to the article. You cannot establish fact by fiat. As I have repeatedly stated, the Manual of Style on Wikipedia includes the use of national varieties of English where appropriate. If you have a problem with this policy, I suggest you take it up on the policy talk page. Kdm852 (talk) 06:10, 5 December 2018 (UTC)
- One can hardly fail to notice your studious addition of the Use Hong Kong English admonition to all and sundry pages having anything to do with Hong Kong. I maintain that this is an undesirable discouragement to the freedom of thought and action of editors because there is no instance in which you have added the admonition where it has any practical relevance. I invite you to demonstrate one instance in any one of the hundreds(?) of such articles so tagged by you where a choice of word or structure requires prior consideration of the relative positions of "Hong Kong English" and, say, British English (the pertinent example as, according to sourced material appearing on the Hong Kong English page, that is the dominant English form in Hong Kong). And in case you have brushing this off as you did our previous encounter, the onus is squarely on you to justify your additions to WP pages and if they cannot be justified, they must be removed. sirlanz 15:59, 15 February 2019 (UTC)
- sirlanz, the onus is not on me to justify adhering to the Manual of Style to everyone who disagrees with it. You tried to bring this discussion to the talk page on the MoS and no consensus was reached to bring the manual in line with your view. As a result, I will continue to follow the current policy of using local varieties of English for region-specific pages. I have no interest in restarting this discussion with you again from the beginning. Either convince the community, or accept the consensus. Kdm852 (talk) 02:28, 16 February 2019 (UTC)
- On substance: Nothing to say on substance? Only interested in hiding behind form? A consensus is achieved only after substantive discussion. In the absence of such engagement from you, there is no exchange of views and no basis for consensus. As a starting point to an intelligent debate, I have asked for just one example from what must be some tens of thousands of words, just one? Or is it simply too much for you to face up to the fact that all that adding of tags has, at best, contributed nothing at all to the encyclopaedia?
- On form: Where do you get the idea that the Manual of Style supports your slavish addition of the warning to all Hong Kong pages? The MOS stresses universality in choice of English style and impresses on us that we are writing for an international, not parochial audience. Even if you were able to come up with evidence of a specific written form of Hong Kong English relevant to this encyclopaedia, on what basis do you suggest that the MOS supports your using it? sirlanz04:59, 16 February 2019 (UTC)
- sirlanz, All the issues you raise have been addressed to you in previous discussions. It is not my job to explain the reasons behind the MoS to you ad infinitum. The fact that you continue to carry on this discussion on my user page, rather than on the Talk page of the MoS, even though neither of us makes the policy on this site, leads me to suspect that you are simply trolling at this point. Kdm852 (talk) 07:33, 16 February 2019 (UTC)
- Here's your last chance to address the point instead of ducking it. Tell us how the HKE admonition assists an editor in the selection of "honour" or "honor" in contributing to an article. Fundamental underpinnings to language tags are the ideas that they help to achieve consistency in the articles and they serve to resolve conflict between editors. How does your tag achieve either of those goals?

- I have pursued this on your page because (1) you are the only editor carrying this HKE tag banner; (2) the MOS is a huge article dealing with myriad issues; and (3) almost no one monitoring that page either is interested or equipped to contribute to this HKE question (as past disinterest in this has demonstrated). So stop ducking, try to address the specifics. sirlanz 07:45, 16 February 2019 (UTC)
- sirlanz I am not ducking the point. I have answered all these questions and more in earlier discussions (as I said previously) and am tired of repeating myself. This is not a discussion to be had between the two of us, so I recommend posting either in the MoS Talk page, or on the HK Wikiproject page. Kdm852 (talk) 08:12, 16 February 2019 (UTC)

For your convenience, questions repeatedly ignored: Provide one example of a page where you have added the tag where there is content that requires the use of some kind of English unique to Hong Kong; explain how the tag assists an editor in choosing between "honour" and "honor" in his/her editing work. sirlanz08:18, 16 February 2019 (UTC)
