GA Cup - September 2014 Newsletter

WikiProject Good Articles's 2014-15 GA Cup - September 2014

Welcome to the GA Cup! In less than 72 hours, the competition will begin! Before you all start reviewing nominations we want to make sure you understand the following:

  • This is a friendly competition so we don't want any cheating/breaking of the rules. However, if you do believe someone is going against the rules, notify the judges. All the rules are listed here.
  • If you are a new editor or new to reviewing Good article nominations, it is imperative that you read the 4 essays/guides listed under FAQ #4. If you do not understand something, ask a judge for clarification ASAP!
  • The competition is not entirely about who can review the most nominations. Per the "Scoring" page, there is different criteria in which you can earn more points. Theoretically, you could review 10 nominations and have 80 points but another user could have reviewed 5 nominations and have 100 points. Yes, we want you to review as many nominations as you can as this will greatly increase the number of points you earn, but you must also keep in mind that every single review will be looked over by a judge. If we find that you are "rubber-stamping" (in other words, the review is not complete but you still passed/failed the article) you may be disqualified without warning.

Also, rather than creating a long list on what to remember, make sure you have read the "Scoring", "Submissions", and "FAQ" pages.

Now for the one question that we guarantee you have: how on earth will the rounds work???

Yes, we never actually had a solid platform regarding how the rounds would work because we had no idea how many people would sign-up. Even though the competition is about to begin, because sign-ups are still open, it is impossible to say exactly how each round will work. As of now, we can confirm that Round 1 will have everyone compete in one big pool. Depending on the final number of participants after sign-ups close, a to-be-determined number of participants will move on (highest scorers will move on) to Round 2. We guarantee that the top 15 will move on, so make sure you aim for those top positions! Moving on to Round 2, participants will be split into pools of even numbers (for example, every pool will have 6 participants). The pools will be determined by a computer program that places participants by random. More details regarding Round 2 will be sent out at the end of Round 1.

It is important to note that the GA Cup will run on UTC time, so make sure you know what time that is for where you live! On that note, the GA Cup will start on October 1 at 0:00:01 UTC; Round 1 will end on October 29 at 23:59:59 UTC; Round 2 will commence on November 1 at 0:00:01 UTC. All reviews must be started after or on the start time of the round. If you qualify for Round 2 but do not complete a review before the end of Round 1, the review can be carried over to Round 2; however that review will not count for Round 1. Prior to the start of the the second round, participants who qualify to move on will be notified.

Finally, if you know anyone else that might be interesting in participating, let them know! Sign-ups close on October 15 so there is still plenty of time to join in on the action!

If you have any further questions, contact one of the judges or leave a message here.

On October 16 or 17, 2014, check the Pools page as we will post the exact number of participants that will move on to the next round. Because this number will be determined past the halfway mark of Round 1, we encourage you to aim to be in the top 15 as the top 15 at the end of the round are guaranteed to move on.

Cheers from NickGibson3900, Dom497, TheQ Editor and Figureskatingfan.

To subscribe or unsubscribe to future GA Cup newsletter, please add or remove your name to our mailing list. If you are a participant, you will be on the mailing list no matter what as this is the easiest way to communicate between all participants.

GA Cup

Hi, can you please tell me what you thought the purpose of the GA Cup was? This will allow us to clarify the same confusion that other editors may have.--Dom497 (talk) 17:40, 28 September 2014 (UTC)

I thought it was about writing good articles, not reviewing them. Jinkinson talk to me 17:43, 28 September 2014 (UTC)
Ah, I see. For the first year, we are trying to keep things simple. If this year is successful, we already have plans to include writing GA's next year.--Dom497 (talk) 17:49, 28 September 2014 (UTC)

I would like to be adopted

Hello Jinkinson, I'd liked to be adopted. I think it's funny how as a freshman in college I'm now spending spare time studying for class and editing Wikipedia instead of studying and playing video games. I don't know if I'm supposed to post under a talk page to ask for someone to adopt me, or if users are picked by random. I just felt I could use help refining my skills because I often find myself looking things up. If you're able to help me, thanks! --Dekema2 (talk) 02:01, 30 September 2014 (UTC)

Sure, I'll adopt you. Just ask me something here if you need help. Jinkinson talk to me 02:23, 30 September 2014 (UTC)
Thanks a lot and see you around!! --Dekema2 (talk) 02:30, 30 September 2014 (UTC)

Hello Jinkinson. You tagged "Pollock Rip Shoal" for speedy deletion, but you did not notify the article's creator that it had been so tagged. There is strong consensus that the creators of articles tagged for speedy deletion should be warned and that the person placing the tag has that responsibility. All of the major speedy deletion templates contain a pre-formatted warning for this purpose—just copy and paste to the creator's talk page. Thank you. I saw this on new pages, and did a quick touch-up to clarify notability. I imagine you intend to work on it further. DGG ( talk ) 00:44, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

*Blushes* Well I wasn't really, but there's clearly a lot of potential there and the subject is clearly notable, so maybe I could. The problem is there aren't many online sources since its subject has been dead for over 50 years. Jinkinson talk to me 00:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

I'm the one that created the Alpocalypse HD page, and I now see it was deleted because you listed it on AfD. Why didn't you tell me you were listing it? -Joltman (talk) 12:37, 4 October 2014 (UTC)

I don't know, because I use Twinkle, which automatically notifies articles creators when I nominate a page for deletion. It notified User:Largerthanlife147, not you, so sorry if I was supposed to notify you instead but I had no idea I was. Jinkinson talk to me 12:41, 4 October 2014 (UTC)

Hoos In Treble Deletion

Hi, I'm the creator of this page. Could you give me some pointers as to why its possibly being deleted and how to prevent it from being so? Other acapella groups at the same university have already had pages made and this particular group is making one for the sole purpose of documenting achievements. They are seeking no support through wiki as it is not appropriate to try to find fans via wiki; it is for documentation, as I said, of awards and to give others an idea of the group for any research/personal interest purposes along with the 6 other acapella groups who are part of the same foundation at UVa. Thats why I'm confused as to why the page's content is being questioned. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.111.165.119 (talk) 17:50, 5 October 2014 (UTC)

Wikipedia

Dear Jinkinson,

I've noticed that you'd flagged my Zombierella article for removal. I was obviously disappointed, but there's something that you're not understanding. My Zombierella mark, is a federally protected U.S. Trademark; which I myself legally own and is a part of my private company. Prior to filing for this U.S. Trademark, there were no found search results from Google. Once you file a U.S. Trademark, there are law firms; and international mark pirates; all over the world; that are constantly on the hunt for new; and clever marks to which they can steal; or hijack them for themselves. After I filed my mark, future Google search results suddenly begun to proliferate; with other copycats and other wannabes; that'd soon emerged with a battery of supposedly authentic sites; etc.

My company is constantly trying to fight these pirates, and is continually requesting legal takedowns of their infringing material. But I am the only individual in the United States; or the world for that matter; that fully owns the U.S. Trademark and U.S. Copyright; to my created intellectual property. I also have the evidence to prove this; and I'd like to assert my rights and my credits; through Wikipedia; once for all.

There is a legal arsenal in U.S. Trademark law, that the more "famous" entity behind the copied mark; gets to supersede the true owners of the mark; and I will not stand for that. I will protect my federally protected mark; and will not allow myself (or my company); to get boxed into a corner; or have market confusion; because of international pirates; from such far away places; as Russia or China that see an opportunity.

I own my rights 100%. And this is publicly available evidence for anyone to review; or scrutinize; via the U.S. Trademark Office; or the U.S. Copyright Office.

Please be considerate of the rights of owners of intellectual property.

Update on the Administration of the College and plans for shifting

Hey, I just updated a few information on the College Page and it is marked for deletion! I merely added a facebook link and a newspaper link as a reference to the fact I mentioned! Help!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Samir sharma86 (talkcontribs) 14:28, 17 October 2014 (UTC)

The problem here isn't the additions you made, it's the fact that there aren't enough independent reliable sources in the article to establish notability for the school. Facebook is not a reliable source, which is why it was removed. Jinkinson talk to me 14:35, 17 October 2014 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of 8chan

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on 8chan requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Gbawden (talk) 06:31, 27 October 2014 (UTC)

Halloween cheer!

think before csd nominating

"Nicholas Alexander Banks born October 2, 1995 is the current wwe world champion and worlds strongest man. he curls 185 raw a world record." asserts notability very clearly so nominating it for deletion with A7 reason (no indication of importance) is wrong.

Read https://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Wikipedia:Criteria_for_speedy_deletion before nominating any more pages, it's important to get the reason right and use your head before you use your fingers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.128.104.221 (talk) 16:42, 27 October 2014 (UTC)

Yes, you're right. What I was thinking was that the reviewing admin would see the page and know it was made up, so that meant, in turn, that the person would not be notable. Thanks and I'll try to be more careful in the future (e.g. here I should have tagged it as a hoax). Jinkinson talk to me 15:07, 28 October 2014 (UTC)

AFD on John Walsh (Filmmaker)

I was going through some articles that had been tagged by a bot for a WikiProject I'm in and stumbled across the page John Walsh (filmmaker). After wincing at how bad it is and digging through the edit history, I noticed you tagged it for AFD, but I couldn't find a link to the discussion. Can you point me to where that is?

P.S. I'm right now doing an intensive edit on that page to remove a lot of the promotional issues, adding citations, deleting unsourced material etc. So maybe if it passes WP:NOTE it won't be deleted if I can beef it up enough to pass muster. Luthien22 (talk) 21:35, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

Actually, I didn't tag it for AFD, i tagged it for deletion with a WP:BLPPROD template, so there was no discussion. Now that sources have been added I guess it is not eligible for BLPPROD anymore. Jinkinson talk to me 21:44, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
Do you think it would pass AFD in its current state? As I do more edits on it and more research, the more I'm convinced it's not going to pass WP:NOTE no matter what I do. Luthien22 (talk) 18:20, 2 November 2014 (UTC)
Actually, it seems like there might be enough RS coverage to survive an AFD. Not just those in the article now, but also in sources like these: [1] [2] [3] Jinkinson talk to me 21:18, 2 November 2014 (UTC)

No, that's not what that means. You should not add that to the article, it is just a way of organizing deletion discussions. The article itself has not been deleted yet, but if you want to keep it from being deleted you should add reliable sources that discuss this food to the article. DYK for 2014 Jefferson County Public Schools protests

 — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:03, 11 November 2014 (UTC)

Jinkinson, did you forget you had nominated 2014 Colorado student protests for DYK? The reviewer apparently didn't notice you had subsequently redirected it to Columbine High School protests, which was later moved to the present title. I have just given credit for the DYK to the others involved in the present article, which as you may have noticed was created earlier the same day as your version. Redirecting your article was a wise and generous thing to do, but if you hadn't forgotten about the DYK nomination, you should have then noted there that you had redirected it and that the creator and substantial editors of that article should be credited. Please do that if something like this happens again. Yngvadottir (talk) 05:34, 11 November 2014 (UTC)

Hey, you were right to remove the speedy tag because the creator had mistakenly copied it when he recreated the article. Limited close paraphrasing or quotation is appropriate within reason, so long as the material is clearly attributed in the text. However, longer paraphrases which are not attributed to their source may constitute copyright violation or plagiarism, and are not acceptable on Wikipedia. Such content cannot be hosted here for legal reasons; please do not upload it. You may use external websites or printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If you own the copyright to the text, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use it — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the copyright but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. Specifically. the text you added contains sentence fragments copied and pasted from both articles you used as a source., Second Quantization (talk) 21:54, 17 November 2014 (UTC)

Hello IntoThinAir. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.

The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.

If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.

Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.

I hope this message finds you well and thanks again you for your efforts in this area. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:20, 18 November 2014 (UTC).

East Van Cross: Buildings and structures?

The article is about the symbol, one example of which is as a particular monument. I actually thought about what categories were good and came up empty.

  • So it's not a structure? OK, from what I gathered it looked like it was a sculpture of some sort. But you're right it's just a symbol, not a sculpture, so i'll remove the category. Thanks for pointing that out to me.Everymorning talk to me 03:33, 21 November 2014 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Seven Decades, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Jimmie Rodgers. See "Read "...no long- term data demonstrating that e-cigarettes are a “ healthier alternative.”" Before you made your edit I provided verification in my edit summary. The text is sourced. QuackGuru (talk) 03:14, 25 November 2014 (UTC)

  • Do you mean it's in the abstract? Because if so, it seems to me that the conclusion you are drawing from the paper and putting in the article is WP:OR, which is why I said it doesn't seem to be explicitly stated in the Drummond article. The article doesn't explicitly say that there's no long-term data that e-cigarettes are a healthier alternative. An alternative phrasing that I personally would like better would be "...no long-term data regarding the carcinogenic effects of e-cigarettes, or regarding their effects on lung function." Homeopathy

A word of advice - the Homeopathy article is subject to discretionary sanctions as a result of Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Pseudoscience. I'd strongly advise against getting into an edit war, and instead recommend that if an edit is reverted, you discuss the matter on the talk page. AndyTheGrump (talk) 04:15, 30 November 2014 (UTC)

Ooranayakanvalasu

Sorry, but that article was PRODded before, in 2009, and dePRODded with this edit, so by the rules it cannot be PRODded again. You will have to consider AfD. I was considering that, but was first going to ask WP:WikiProject Tamil Nadu if they could shed any light - this name does not show up in any searches, but there may be transliteration problems. Not an encyclopedia article

Hi, you asked why I said it was not an encyclopedia article. Well this is my subjective opinion and it is not based on policy. However I think that the subject of the article's claim to fame is that she accuses a presumed innocent person of a serious crime. That person would remain innocent even if he was charged and its my understanding that he hasnt been. He would then go to court and if he was convicted then we would a guilty person whose crime would .... not be notable. Until then we only have an unnamed person who is seriously innocent and faces no formal charges. IMO this is for the tabloids and the blogs ... but I have only scanned the story so I may have misunderstood. Hope this helps. Victuallers (talk) 23:11, 3 December 2014 (UTC)

Unfinished project

The article, SpongeBong HempPants, has not been completed. Please wait til the project is finished to make your ruling on speedy deletion.

  • Don't worry, I couldn't delete the article even if I wanted to. If you are right and you can add reliable sources to support that this series is notable, then someone else will remove the tag I placed on the article and it will survive. If you can't, though, the page will be deleted. Everymorning talk to me 01:44, 4 December 2014 (UTC)

ITN

I wanted to tell you as an ITN participant that I'm sorry for the way your recent nomination was criticized by some. I think that while it was the correct decision to not post the story, the nomination could have been better received- informing you about what usually goes on there without being needlessly critical. I certainly do not think it was "wrong" of you or disruptive to make a good faith nomination about a subject getting wide news coverage. I would like to encourage you to continue to participate in ITN; as you do so you will get a better feel for what stories are looked for by those who participate. Either way, thanks for your contribution. 331dot (talk) 22:42, 4 December 2014 (UTC)

Deletion sorting

Hi Everymorning: Thanks for you ongoing work providing deletion sorting for AfD discussions. Just a note regarding Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/El Uali Mustapha Sayed Special School: When listing the Schools Delete sort for AfD discussions, the transclusion for the AfD discussion at Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Schools needs to be manually added (and also on the appropriate section on the page). For whatever reason, the WP:FWDS script does not automatically add discussions to the Schools delete sort page. Just a heads up. Cheers, NorthAmerica1000 03:08, 8 December 2014 (UTC)

Category:Climate change skeptics

Everymorning, Thank-you for your edit to Anthony Lupo, removing him from Category:Climate change skeptics and adding him to Category:Climate change skeptics (scientists), a category I just created today based on Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2014 October 20#Category:Climate change skeptics. There is also the new Category:Climate change skeptics (politicians). Would you like to help? The task is to move scientists and politicians from the old category into the two new sub-categories, leaving the non scientists and non-politicians. If you can, that would be great; start at the "Zs" and work your way back, as I am starting at the "As". Cheers. Prhartcom (talk) 19:38, 8 December 2014 (UTC)

Update: I reverted your categorization of Harold Lewis as he is not a climate change scientist. Those must also appear on List of scientists opposing the mainstream scientific assessment of global warming; see the criteria there. Cheers. Prhartcom (talk) 22:00, 8 December 2014 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.18

Hello IntoThinAir,

WMF at work on NPP Improvements

Niharika Kohli, a product manager for the growth team, announced that work is underway in implementing improvements to New Page Patrol as part of the 2019 Community Wishlist and suggests all who are interested watch the project page on meta. Two requested improvements have already been completed. These are:

  • Allow filtering by no citations in page curation
  • Not having CSD and PRODs automatically marked as reviewed, reflecting current consensus among reviewers and current Twinkle functionality.
Reliable Sources for NPP

Rosguill has been compiling a list of reliable sources across countries and industries that can be used by new page patrollers to help judge whether an article topic is notable or not. At this point further discussion is needed about if and how this list should be used. Please consider joining the discussion about how this potentially valuable resource should be developed and used.

Backlog drive coming soon

Look for information on the an upcoming backlog drive in our next newsletter. If you'd like to help plan this drive, join in the discussion on the New Page Patrol talk page.
