Can you prove that the image was published in the SU? Picasso's work is not copyfree. --Ghirla | talk 12:46, 20 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yes, it was published in the Soviet Union, the book's name is "Introduction into Dance", Moscow, 1925 You may see the book cover here: http://taganrogcity.com/parnakh.html - it says "the author's portrait by Pablo Picasso", the portrait comes from that book. I know the image is pretty small, but if there are any doubts, I will upload a larger file to commons.wiki.x.io iSasha

Request for edit summary

edit

Hi. I am a bot, and I am writing to you with a request. I would like to ask you, if possible, to use edit summaries a bit more often when you contribute. The reason an edit summary is important is because it allows your fellow contributors to understand what you changed; you can think of it as the "Subject:" line in an email. For your information, your current edit summary usage is 23% for major edits and 65% for minor edits. (Based on the last 150 major and 150 minor edits in the article namespace.)

This is just a suggestion, and I hope that I did not appear impolite. You do not need to reply to this message, but if you would like to give me feedback, you can do so at the feedback page. Thank you, and happy edits, Mathbot 15:00, 26 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Nicolaas Witsen

edit

Hi. Just letting you know that the article Nicolaas Witsen, which you submitted on October 12, was recently deleted from Wikipedia because it appeared to be copied from The Nicolaas Witsen Foundation's web site, and appears to be under copyright. Wikipedia cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from either web sites or printed material.

If you believe that the article is not a copyright violation, or if you have permission from the copyright holder to release the content freely under the GFDL, you can reenter the content at Nicolaas Witsen, after describing the release on the talk page. You might also be interested in this discussion, which gives some context on the situation. Thanks! -- Vary | Talk 16:31, 24 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

What??? That's nonsense, I've never submitted that article to Wikipedia...! ISasha 08:00, 25 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Pavel of Taganrog

edit

Could you clarify the case of Pavel of Taganrog? The text matches that found on the official website of the city of Taganrog Haukur 14:54, 28 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

There is no problem using the text or pictures. See http://www.taganrogcity.com/copyright.html for details. ISasha 20:51, 28 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

When you incorporate text from a public domain website you need to clearly indicate in the article that that's what you're doing - with text such as that in Template:1911. However, I'm not at all convinced that those copyright terms are enough to allow us to use the text. They say "The City of Taganrog makes no warranty that materials contained herein are free of copyright claims or other restrictions or limitations on fair use or display". Haukur 20:57, 28 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Even worse: "The authorized use of this data is limited to informational and educational purposes only, and NOT for operational or commercial purposes." This clearly disqualifies the text for Wikipedia purposes, I'm afraid we'll have to delete the article. Do you know of any similar contributions you've made? Haukur 20:59, 28 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Why this disqualifies the text for Wikipedia? The Taganrog local government considers publications in any encyclopedia, be it a paper edition or electionic one informational and educational purpose. You can contact the Foreign Relations Office or Arts & Culture Council for more information (http://www.taganrogcity.com/contactus.html). There is no problem for using this. I actually work at the Taganrog local government, so I know. If you need special permission for WIkipedia, I will try to arrange a special clause in the Copyrights page. Thank you. ISasha 07:04, 29 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia can only directly incorporate text that is in the public domain or licenced under the GFDL. Text which allows only non-commercial educational use is not acceptable. This is because Wikipedia's content can be reused by anyone in the world, including people who'll want to use it for commercial purposes. Haukur 08:45, 29 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Let me reiterate - all texts on the web site taganrogcity.com have been in the public domain. And all texts that are published at wikipedia.org are no longer the same, as they are edited, extended, in some parts removed etc. So I thought that would be enough. I have checked the page http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Wikipedia:Requesting_copyright_permission , and I guess you are right, so the question is what can we do? Should we consider making the texts on our web site completely free to use? ISasha 06:32, 31 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps. I can't really advise you, I'm not in your situation. But if you don't I'm afraid the material from your website will have to be removed. Reusers of Wikipedia are already putting the content to commercial use [1] Haukur 16:40, 2 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
OK, we changed the copyright & use policies - http://taganrogcity.com/copyright.html . It is now available for any use (unless otherwise stated, as in case with copyrighted photographs given courtesy of various photographers for use only on our web site). All texts are in the public domain. ISasha 06:55, 3 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Helping out with the Unassessed Wikipedia Biographies

Seeing that you are an active member of the WikiBiography Project, I was wondering if you would help lend a hand in helping us clear out the amount of unassessed articles tagged with {{WPBiography}}. Many of them are of stub and start class, but a few are of B or A caliber. Getting a simple assessment rating can help us start moving many of these biographies to a higher quality article. Pyotr Krasnov

edit

Hi, ISasha. You added a sentence to this article that I do not believe translates very well. What do you mean when you say, "a workgroup for rehabilitation of Pyotr Krasnov"? --Veritas (talk) 14:15, 23 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Veritas! In Russian this sounds as 'рабочая группа по реабилитации'. Please feel free to modify as you like. I believe in general that means that a workgroup consisting of deputies of Russian State Duma will be created to tackle the issue.

ISasha (talk) 15:14, 23 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the response :). I guess my question was about the "rehabilitation" part. Does this mean that they intend to commemorate him? --Veritas (talk) 15:19, 23 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hmmm. I guess Mr. Vodolatsky (former Rostov Oblast vice-governor) is trying to represent Pyotr Krasnov as a victim of the Soviet regime. So, "rehabilitation" here means some sort of "vindication" I think. Commemorating a Nazi in a country like Russia would definitely be a failure. By the way, this attempt has created a wave of protest and there are many publications regarding the case. You think including some hyperlinks in the "References" section would be inappropriate? ISasha (talk) 09:09, 24 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I think including links would be fine. I find this topic pretty interesting. --Veritas (talk) 16:26, 24 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

edit

Sasha, you need to reconsider your behavior. You cannot call any disagreeable to you edit as "vandalism" unless WP:VAND clearly applies. Also, you need to cut down on reverts significantly. 3RR is not an entitlement and frequent reverting never helps to bring the article to your desired shape. If your point is valid, chances are other users will notice it. If this does not happen, it may be time to back off and let it go. You may be wrong as well. Aside of that, you may wish to consider editing less contentious articles for a change. Regards, --Irpen 07:31, 19 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Dear Irpen, the article you are talking about must be the controversial film "The Soviet Story". When anonymous users delete the whole section ignoring the talk page and everything - is this vandalism or not? ISasha (talk) 09:35, 19 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
No, it is not. The user may be opinionated and wrong but he clearly thinks that this information does not belong to the article and this is why he deletes it. Vandalism, is deleting the information to with the goal to make Wikipedia worse. The user thinks that the text does not belong to this article. He may be mistaken but being wrong is not the same as being a vandal. --Irpen 17:44, 19 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Oh really? I'm sorry! I am not a Wikipedia guru to teach you what is right and what is wrong, but persistent deleting of an article's section (by anonymous users) without discussing this in the talk page is just annoying! ISasha (talk) 18:35, 19 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
I agree it may be annoying, especially when done by an anonymous user who refuses to log in in order to add nuisance. All I am saying is that it is not vandalism. --Irpen 18:40, 19 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
So what is your suggestion? Please let me know. Am I authorized too to delete parts of articles in Wikipedia without any discussion? ISasha (talk) 18:44, 19 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

If you read my first post again, you will see my suggestions. The first one to not call edits like these "vandalism". The second one, to cut down on reverts. The third one, is to alternate editing contentious topics with non-controversial ones. --Irpen 18:54, 19 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Are you an official Wikipedia moderator? I will follow your suggestion, but only after the anonymous vandals reconsider their "behavior". You did not respond to my question: Am I authorized too to persistently delete parts of articles in Wikipedia without any discussion? Please let me know. ISasha (talk) 19:06, 19 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
I am not an official moderator. I am giving you an advise for your own benefit. You are not authorized to delete parts of articles without discussions. Neither is an anon. I think, the anon is annoying but you are plainly taking the anon's bait. --Irpen 19:16, 19 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
No, I am always open for discussion. Anytime, so I am not taking the bait. :-) ISasha (talk) 19:49, 19 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi!

My name is Victor and I'm a storyteller with the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization that supports Wikipedia. I'm chronicling the inspiring stories of the Wikipedia community around the world, including those from readers, editors, and donors. Stories are absolutely essential for any non-profit to persuade people to support the cause, and we know the vast network of people who make and use Wikipedia have so much to share.

I'm scouring user pages looking for inspiring, motivating and interesting stories of how Wikipedia has affected the lives of people. I'm asking questions like "How has Wikipedia changed your life?", "What's the most interesting story you have about Wikipedia?" and "Has Wikipedia ever surprised you?"

Last year, we used the annual fundraiser as a way to show the world who it is who actually writes Wikipedia. We featured editors from Brazil, Ukraine, Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Kenya, India, United States and England. This campaign was a huge success, resulting in the most financially successful fundraising campaign ever. It was also a campaign that stayed true to the spirit of Wikipedia, educating the public that this free top-5 website is created by volunteers like you and I.

This year we want to highlight more Russian-language Wikipedia editors, so I am in the process of planning a trip to Russia to interview editors.

If you or someone you know (or have heard about) has been positively affected by Wikipedia, or have something interesting to say about Wikipedia I'd very much like to hear about it!

Please let me know if you're inclined to take part in the Wikipedia Stories Project, or if you know someone else with whom I should speak.

Of course, if you have any questions or concerns, please ask! I will answer as soon as I can. I apologize for any poor translation of this letter, I am using Google-translate. I hope it makes you laugh :)

Hi! It's been YEARS since I wrote the article. I stopped editing Wikipedia about 10 years ago. As for Adlerberg's book – I have it in Russian language and I think it was also published in French sometime in the XIX century... ISasha (talk) 19:28, 15 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Minor and not-so-minor edits

edit

Hello, I'm BlackcurrantTea. I clicked on your contributions out of curiosity, and I noticed you're marking almost all of your edits as minor, yet several that I looked at aren't actually minor. Examples: 1 2 3 4 5

It's an understandable mistake, and one I've made myself. The Wikipedia definition of minor is different to what most of us expect. I've reviewed Help:Minor edit many times, trying to decide if the changes I was making were minor. It helped me to think of a minor edit as a change that a reader is not that likely to notice (unless it's reverting obvious vandalism: this also counts as minor). Maybe it fixes a typo, or corrects the format of a reference without adding any new information. It doesn't change or add anything very noticeable to the page, and other editors are unlikely to dispute it.

I hope this helps. If you have any questions, you can reply to me here; I'll keep your talk page on my watchlist for a bit. Happy editing! BlackcurrantTea (talk) 07:10, 22 August 2019 (UTC) Ok! These looked like minor edits to me! I will keep it in mind, thanks for bringing that up! ISasha (talk) 09:33, 22 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

edit
Hello! Voting in the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 on Monday, 2 December 2019. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2019 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:04, 19 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
