ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, Hannolans. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Videos

We usually do without videos on Wikipedia. They usually are not needed. And per WP:GRATUITOUS, this is especially the case for sexual content. I fail to see how your crush video at Crush fetish enhances readers' understanding of the topic. Everyone knows what crushing something looks like. I could successfully pursue getting your video removed. I'll let it stay for now. Unlike your previous edit that I reverted, thank goodness you didn't include a "crushing an animal" video this time, because that would have no chance of remaining. Hi, I was not aware of the policy to discourage the illustration of articles by videos in the English Wikipedia. I read WP:GRATUITOUS as to discourage explicit content. Is discouraging the use of video a general guideline? In the Dutch Wikipedia we try to have a relevant illustration in every article, and also try to have audio and/or video. --Hannolans (talk) 02:11, 10 December 2018 (UTC)

The English Wikipedia doesn't discourage the use of videos. I just meant that we usually don't use them because they usually aren't needed, or because we don't have them. But even if we have them, they usually are not needed. Not even in our medical articles. And in terms of sexual topics, there is WP:GRATUITOUS to consider. Editors and readers would simply consider it porn and object to including it. In those cases, the videos would distract and detract more than add anything to the article. We don't need porn videos or explicit porn images in the Pornography article, for example. I didn't revert the video you included at the Trampling article, considering that it's not showing nudity (which would be unnecessary for that topic) and it's a unique topic in terms of sexual activity (and so the video might enhance understanding in that regard), but it's not typical to include sexual videos on Wikipedia.

Anyway, I appreciate that you didn't add a "crushing an animal" video this time. You can get the sense from looking at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard/Archive259#Crush fetish article and here that editors (the vast majority anyway) wouldn't be onboard with showing videos of crushing animals as a sexual fetish.
