Stable carbene

edit

Freestyle-69

Thanks for spotting the typo.

I did work making stable carbenes during my PhD, but am not doing so anymore ...

Do you isolate carbenes, or are you sticking them straight on metals?

I would like to add a photo of a stable carbene to this page if possible. I know they are boring white solids, but none the less it would help prove that they are "stable" and can be isolated.

If you happen to isolate any in the near future maybe you can take a photo?

If not, no probs.

I use to isolate my carbenes by sublimation:

Thanks - keep up the editing!

QG

FS-69 - thanks for getting back to me so soon.
I say first get the photo of the carbene in a Schhlenk tube, then worry about how to upload it!!!!!!
However, that said, the best place to upload it is http://commons.wikimedia.org, as wiki-commons shares images with all other language wikipedias. I tend to release all rights in to the public domain, but that is up to you ...
It is quite easy to upload an image, you just need to select prior to upload (from a drop down menu) some sort of licence option, else an overly efficient admin will delete the image as a suspect copyright infringement. All other details can be added later.
I've never made the IMes carbene, however, I suspect it will sublime as a white-ish solid. Can I ask are you making it by deprotonation, if so have you tried K-HMDS or Na-HMDS as a base, a nicer reaction than LDA, cleaner and you tend to get a nice precipitate salt by-product which can be filtered away. Are you using the chloride?
If you are having problems cleaning up the salt, have you ever tried an ion exchange with NH4.PF6 (add salt, water and NH4.PF6, more often than not the product will ppt as a solid white PF6 product from water - however PF6 precursor salts can cause other problems so might not suit your needs). If it is all a bit top secret, then do not feel the need to comment on any of the above ....
PS - is the above sublimation diagram clear ~ you don't often get feedback on these things from the "target audience".
QG
Great I look forward to seeing the photo. Please correct away. Everyone gets their words reworked in some form, at some point, that is what a wiki is all about in the end! Cheers Quantockgoblin (talk) 08:19, 26 March 2008 (UTC) <-- see I remembered to sign it this time!Reply

Freestyle-69, great photos, thanks for taking and uploading them. You can see I've already used one on the stable carbene page.
I did the first major rewrite, but I think the article is soarly in need of a really good copy-edit and partial re-write. It probably needs a new pair of eyes to read over it and take it apart as necessary.
My view is that if you are about to do anything to improve the article then Be Bold! and go for it. The people who edit on this page will not care what style it is in as long as you are improving it (I think)!!! I say shoot first, ask questions later! Me, I'm a Brit so your edits will suit me !!!
However, if you want to play it with a straight bat, it seems that V8rik has the first edit on the page, so you could ask him what style he wants it in.
Finally this article is already at “good status” without really trying to steer it that way. A really good rewrite might get it close to "feature article" status, which would be wonderful !!
Thanks again for the photos - Quantockgoblin (talk) 16:31, 9 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
I've got onto V8rik so I'll see how it goes. Being bold is fine but I like to be diplo if I can. Freestyle-69 (talk) 06:33, 10 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Carbene Photo

FS - I noticed that your carbene photos do not have a liecense. If you do not add a liecense soon, they will be deleted!

For example if you wish to release all rights into the public domain you can add the tag:

There are also other licensing options - see: Copyright_tags

Cylindrospermopsin

edit

Nice job with the cylindrospermopsin edit, very clear and easy to read, nice balance of chemistry and background. I figured you for a carbene boy, but now a big edit on a natural product ... you got me a bit puzzeled, is there a link? I think readers like a little colour, maybe a picture of an algae bloom could be added? - Quantockgoblin (talk) 22:44, 1 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Surprise... I had a bit of a chem-direction change a little while ago. And who said I was a boy? :) Don't worry, I did the same for you- must be the way we write? Usernames are often non-gender-specific but I still seem to assume one way or the other!
Yup, I'd like a pic of the algae itself (microscope shot)- I have one but it's not free... guess I can search on WP? A shot of a bloom would be good too, good idea. I'll have a look. I stuggled with the layout, I would have liked the text to wrap with the diagrams a bit better but I'm way too tech-numpty (or too lazy to find out) to sort that. Freestyle-69 (talk) 22:53, 1 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
You could look under the Algal blooms category: i.e. [[1]] or Algae category i.e. [[2]] for a free pic on wiki commons. Formatting pages is not my strong point, I've just pick a few things up here and there. You can get a bit more control with "|left" and "|right" tags in your images. All the best in a completely non-gender specific way :P -- Quantockgoblin (talk) 23:24, 1 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Cheers- I was browsing rather fuddledly for pics when I saw your note, but I had already found the bloom photo (on algal bloom, funnily enough) :) and it's the best one I think. The Anabaena one isn't ideal (that one's non-toxic) but ya get that... All ready for your viewing pleasure! Freestyle-69 (talk) 23:40, 1 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

PNG -> SVG

edit

Hi Freestyle,

First the bad news: Unfortunately, you can't just convert png to svg. The problem is that svg is a set of instructions (shapes, curves, etc.) and that png is a representation of a block of pixels.

The good news is that there is software that can do a good job of tracing pngs, especially if they have a limited number of colours and shapes. Inkscape, for example, has a potrace plugin which can give pretty nice results.

I've started a description of how to do this at User:Slashme/To SVG, and I'll ask the Graphic Lab people to comment.

Hope this helps. --Slashme (talk) 08:53, 5 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

By the way, what is "QG"? --Slashme (talk) 05:58, 6 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ah, -that- goblin. By the way, I re-drew his diagrams from scratch, but re-used parts of one diagram to help with the next. Line-art like that should in theory be quite easy to trace, but the tools I've seen so far don't make a distinction between lines and areas of colour: they just render lines as long thin shapes. --Slashme (talk) 09:53, 6 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Copyedit

edit

Thanks for the offer to help out. Suggestions:

  • Solubility seems to have redundancies and be unclear.
  • Atrazine is a controversial topic (for good reason), thus the article merits greater coherency.
  • If you wish to avoid controversies but wish to help with important content, you can review items on the Wikipedia:WikiProject Chemicals/Organization, focusing on those that are < A-grade.

Recurring content problems (IMHO) with many chem articles, aside from the need to copy editing the English (i) some articles verge on being a how-to manual (a no-no), (ii) the safety sections are often bloated because any idiot (woops, I mean any editor) can get beaucoup info from Googling but most experienced editor prefer concise summaries while steering readers toward MSDSs, (iii) some editors use articles to promote people and institutions vs describing the topic at hand.

With best wishes,--Smokefoot (talk) 05:04, 15 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I both hear you and feel your pain :) Due to time restrictions (and not apathy) I'll stay out of the fights, but I'll look at both those articles anyway. After that I'll hit the list starting with those that request copyediting or the like. Cheers Freestyle-69 (talk) 06:52, 15 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for catching my editing mistake. How I came to delete a whole section is a total mystery to me. However, the other changes you reverted were deliberate.
Basic taste just redirects to Taste, so might as well go there directly.
The nbsp that I deleted was preceded by an ordinary space, which completely negated the intended effect of the nbsp, and caused an extra visible space in front of the dash. Looking at newspapers that use a spaced em dash, they allow breaks in front of the dash, and it appears visually acceptable.

re nice

edit

Thank you for the kind words. Obviously with a variable IPA I can't get credibility, except with people who remember me as 70.137.x.x and who have worked with me for a long time. I understand that "newcomers" are taken on with a lot of skepticism. And with a numeric IPA you are a newcomer forever, seemingly, even if you are not. If I call myself an electrician one day and a mathematician the other day, this is really fishy! And if then I explain, how this is possible I get an answer like "compressed for my sanity, and don't leave a message on my talk page every hour". Thats not nice. Besides most people don't even bother to respond to an anon contributor, as he is a newcomer forever. So you are right, probably I should get a user name. The regulars sometimes have an enormous amount of self confidence, to say the least. I agree that my response to get an education and a facial and move out from his mother wasn't nice either, but my a$$ was boiling over by then. So I thank you again for soothing my nerves by kindness. The tragedy is that it is not even possible to sell my resume to young HR people, so I am maybe idiosyncratic myself by now. Its a conflict of generations and I start to feel my age like a 200 years. 70.137.173.82 (talk) 23:15, 26 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yup. Honestly, a username gives people something to identify with. I've seen quite a few users take things waaaaaaay too personally; sometimes they have a right to feel aggrieved, and other times they are probably a bit too sensitive, but in any case it never helps. I have found that "more senior" users struggle sometimes with the detachment of anonymity and the lack of respect that they might get. In any case, those people that can swallow their pride, open up a little personal can of Harden Up and get on with it, prosper. Other valuable people fall by the wayside and their input is lost, which is a shame. I've found that humility is a very valuable trait to have on this wonderful place we (including yourself) collectively own. I'm amazed and proud that I can contribute to potentially millions, and when I get a few things out of my hair I'll hopefully be much more active. Your point has been made and a valid concern noted- please push (gently) through and you'll fit right in. Freestyle-69 (talk) 00:16, 27 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Of Bisphenol A and fruitloops

edit

Re [4]: in the blighted land on the opposite side of the globe, they're a breakfast cereal and are actually spelled Froot Loops, which is perfectly reasonable since they contain no fruit. (Scientists disagree over whether they contain froot, although the majority of peer-reviewed studies to date suggest a growing consensus that they do.) In all seriousness, there have indeed been some ridiculous edits from scaremongers, but there have been equally ridiculous ones from some head-in-the-sand types who act as if they're doing paid work for the plastics industry. I thought Yilloslime might have redacted that portion of you all's conversation (note the regional personal possessive atrocity), which was perfectly appropriate for user talk but a bit incendiary for article talk.

Cheers (and watch out for billabongs),
Rivertorch (talk) 14:49, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

huh... when i re-posted that thread from my talkpage to talk:BPA, i hadn't considered that the "frootloop" comment might not go over so well. it just hadn't crossed my mind. so anyways, sorry about that. i should've redacted that comment or simply not posted your response to my reply. my point in posting the exchange was basically just to re-use something i'd already articulated (rather than type up something from scratch), and thought that for the sake of transparency i ought to include all the context, i.e. your initial question and then reply. so, sorry if i got you into hot water. i'll be more careful in the future. Not to worry, Yillo. And it was only tepid water from me; I was at least as amused as I was worried. We Wikipedians are all wonderfully reasonable, thick-skinned people, immune to petty grievances, edit wars, wikidrama, and the like . . . except when we aren't! And unfortunately, "when we aren't" comes all too often for my taste. Rivertorch (talk) 17:27, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Yah, I try to stay PC most of the time, esp on article pages; sometimes my personality (optional, I know- not everyone has one apparently) comes out on user talk pages :) I agree about the "head-in-the-sand" comment though- I couldn't be a scientist if I wasn't interested in new ideas. The joys of achieving a balance. Now, I'll just have to see if I can go get involved in some "petty grievances, edit wars, wikidrama, and the like" after I finish my breakfast of Frootloops :P
Yillo, feel free to paraphrase that quote on the article talk page if you like; I wouldn't want to incur the wrath of a breakfast cereal :)

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

edit

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being minor in the usual way.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. With the script in place, you can continue with this functionality indefinitely (its use is governed by WP:MINOR). If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 19:37, 15 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
