IP Address 62.171.198.4
editFork me wrote:
- You have recently threatened to block this IP address. This is a response to that.
- This IP address is one used by schools throughout the UK. As a teacher I use it at work. This IP address (and others in the range) is regularly blocked for vandalism and warnings given. This seems to be totally pointless.
- I realise that wikipedia has procedures, but there are exceptional circumstances where they clearly won't work and a new resolution needs to be found.
- The IfL IP range is used by thousands of people throughout the UK, most of them schoolchildren, the rest school staff. Threatening to block this address will therefore have no effect whatsoever. An IP range that can be used anonymously by thousands of children and teenagers WILL cause vandalism if completely unblocked.
- If the range were blocked then myself, other teachers and pupils with the right intentions will all be blocked from editing during the day, however, if unblocked it will cause vandalism. A difficult situation.
- Is there any way that the entire IfL IP range could be blocked from ANONYMOUS editing only? This would mean that specific users could then be blocked, but those wishing to genuinely contribute still can.
- Being relatively new to wikipedia myself, I don't know the best place to discuss this, perhaps you could point me in the correct direction?
- Thanks in advance. Fork me 15:03, 27 September 2006 (UTC)
Hi, I appreciate your concern. It is in fact possible to block anonymous editing only; I have just done so with 62.171.198.4. This is common practise and has been the standard response to anonymous vandalism since the capability was added to our software a few months ago. If, as you have done, you create an account, you will never be affected by these blocks and you should not recieve any warning messages on your personal talk page.
However, our policies prohibit applying indefinite blocks to IP addresses except under special circumstances (such as open proxies), so the block I have applied will eventually expire, at which point anonymous vandalism is likely to start again, and so more warning messages will be given, and so on.
Blocking IP ranges is more complex, and again is generally done only under special circumstances. If you wish to discuss the matter further, I suggest you post at Wikipedia:Administrator's noticeboard – Gurch 15:21, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

Expansion of WP:WikiProject Brighton - your opinion, please.
editI have had the idea of expanding and renaming WikiProject Brighton to become WikiProject Sussex - this would not exclude people with a particular interest in, say, Chichester, Arundel, Worthing, Midhurst, Pulborough, Billingshurst, Horsham, Crawley, East Grinstead, Haywards Heath, Lewes, Eastbourne, Hastings, Rye, Winchelsea, etc. - all places worthy of a WikiProject - and I'm not sure that having WikiProject Brighton as a sub-project of WP:Sussex would work. I feel that we are being too exclusive - we could attract new members this way. What do you think? - Vox Humana 8' 17:33, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you for your feedback on the above proposal. The response given Matt (a. k. a. User:Hassocks5489) makes sense - I would support WP:WikiProject Brighton being made a separate project to WP:Sussex, but as a kind of sub-project, so that WikiProject Brighton would deal with all of WP:Sussex's B&H business. WikiProject Brighton would certainly be linked to from the Sussex page. I'm rambling a bit here - I don't really quite know what to say - but you get my point, I'm sure. - Vox Humana 8' 13:09, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
- Brighton is still in the ceremonial county of and is surrounded by Sussex and has been for as long as it has existed. Therefore, Brighton should be referred to as being in Sussex, shouldn't it? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Vox Humana 8' (talk • contribs) 16:19, 3 April 2007 (UTC).
- To be honest, I don't see the point. I've already started WP:Sussex - join if you want, don't if you don't. In any case, you can put on the related Portal stuff about related WikiProjects...--Vox Humana 8' 15:00, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

Peter Ward (English Footballer)
editDear Fork me,
I was so happy with your creation of the Peter Ward (English Footballer) site but unhappy when I recently logged on and saw that the photo image of Peter with Norman Cook was removed. Why was it removed? It was such a great photo..
Thanks, Miaxena7 Miaxena7 (talk) 19:09, 5 September 2008 (UTC)
- It was removed by the admin here as apparently it was in breach of fair use rationale. I was not happy either. Fork me (talk) 17:35, 5 October 2008 (UTC)
Hello, Fork me. An automated process has found and removed an image or media file tagged as nonfree media, and thus is being used under fair use that was in your userspace. The image (Image:Peter ward.jpg) was found at the following location: User:Fork me. This image or media was attempted to be removed per criterion number 9 of our non-free content policy. The image or media was replaced with Image:NonFreeImageRemoved.svg , so your formatting of your userpage should be fine. Please find a free image or media to replace it with, and or remove the image from your userspace. User:Gnome (Bot)-talk 07:48, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

Hiya. WikiProject Brighton was recently tagged as inactive, although, as I've been doing some Brighton-related stuff, I removed the tag. Can we try and get it going again, or do we close it down?--Voxpuppet (talk • contribs) 12:49, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use Image:Peterward.jpg
editThanks for uploading Image:Peterward.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the media description page and edit it to add
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? BlueAzure (talk) 20:50, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

Non-free rationale for File:Can of Spry front.JPG
editThanks for uploading or contributing to File:Can of Spry front.JPG. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Kelly hi! 00:31, 29 March 2013 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image File:Can of Spry from side.JPG
editThanks for uploading File:Can of Spry from side.JPG. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Kelly hi! 23:21, 26 November 2013 (UTC)

File source problem with File:Frankscottwalfordleedstottenham.jpg
editThank you for uploading File:Frankscottwalfordleedstottenham.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.
If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.
Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Latin American 10,000 Challenge invite
editHi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Latin America/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Brazil, Mexico, Peru and Argentina etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Latin American content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon. If you would like to see this happening for Latin America, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Latin America, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant!♦ --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 00:34, 27 October 2016 (UTC)

Brighton Aquarium/Sea Life Centre
editWork is finally underway, with more to come as I review more of my sources. Progress may be intermittent though. As a child of the 1980s, rewriting the "History" section is bringing back memories...! Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 21:44, 13 June 2024 (UTC)
- Excellent I'll take a look. I never got started on what I'd planned, real life stuff got in the way! Have some time again now, so I'll help with this. Fork me (talk) 03:45, 14 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hello! I've expanded as far as I can, but there is very little in my sources about the Florida Rooms era, so anything you can add would be very welcome. I am about to nominate the article at the Did you know? section; if you can expand further I will add you with a co-author credit. Cheers, Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 21:59, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
- I'll take a look when I get home this evening. Fork me (talk) 04:53, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- Many thanks for this. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 12:36, 18 June 2024 (UTC)

DYK for Sea Life Brighton
editOn 30 June 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Sea Life Brighton, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that when Brighton Aquarium (entrance pictured) opened, it had no exhibits? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Sea Life Brighton. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Sea Life Brighton), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

- Thanks again for your contributions to this. The article did very well in terms of number of pageviews on the day it appeared on DYK (about 12,000): in fact it's my fifth best performing nomination of all time, out of 335! Being in the "pictured" slot at the top always helps give pageviews a boost. If you have access to any other sources or info which might be useful for articles relating to entertainment venues etc. in Brighton, let me know: as part of the recent restarting of WikiProject Brighton I hope to be doing a few more articles on Brighton buildings and places, and the more sources the better!
