Two things...

edit

First, let me know if the edit solves the color cast problems in the Swan Head FPC.

Second, and more importantly, I am seeking your valuable knowledge about iStockphoto.com. I have been considering getting an account there and attempting to make some supplemental, not work intensive, income. Before doing this however, I wanted to get an idea about what the income opportunity is. So, I figured I'd ask the resident iStockphoto seller about how much do you clear a month from your stock and how many and what kinds of pictures you have on there. Obviously if you feel uncomfortable telling me about what you are making from iStock, feel free to leave me an angry message on my talk page. Bearded Dragon

edit

Hey Fir,

I have an Eastern Bearded Dragon shot that's pretty good and I would like to put up at FPC in the near future. Do you mind if I shunt your current image out of the Infobox for the purpose? (And I think someone's stealing my idea!). --jjron (talk) 08:13, 6 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yours are good in that they show the full beast; mine may do them on 'wow', but I may also be biased. Perhaps we can let the FPC crowd decide - if mine does better at FPC than yours, then it keeps the infobox, otherwise yours (or one of your new ones if you intend to nominate them) can go back in. OK, I better get it uploaded and nominated - will wait for Broken Hill to make its way off the page first. Yep, better put some words down on that idea, see if it gets any response. --jjron (talk) 11:43, 6 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

FPC

edit

Hi, I realize there have been a lot of older photos on FPC lately and I'd like to explain my share of that. I've reviewed nearly 100,000 public domain images with an eye toward bringing more attention to the best encyclopedic ones among them, particularly those with historic value. Fewer than 1 in 1000 is even worth a second look and far fewer than that get to PPR or FPC (often after quite a while in Photoshop fixing dust and scratch marks two and three pixels wide). FP guidelines specifically allow editors to make some accommodations for balancing historic value against technical quality at FPC. I want you to know that I endeavor to make each of my nominations the very best scan and representation available of its kind. My workshop is at User:Durova/Landmark images if the idea interests you. Cake question

edit

This is kind of silly, but I ran across your image here and I'm intrigued by the cake itself. I have to tell you, I've never seen peaches and chocolate on/in the same cake. So I'm curious: Do you know what kind of cake it was? Just chocolate and the peaches are used as a garnish, or did it have peaches inside also? Or was it the other way 'round, a different sort of cake and it just happens to have chocolate on the outside?

I appreciate your help, and I'm also very impressed with your photography. I love photography and I mess around with it some, but I'm not nearly as good at it as you are. Keep up the good work. -- edi (talk) 22:19, 15 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

edit

Hi, Peter,
Sorry to bother you with this, but I'm very sure that the clouds in this absolutely remarkable Image are not funnel clouds. IMO they are Cirrus clouds. I might be mistaking on this, but I'm sure these are not funnel clouds. May I please ask you to consider the changing of the description of the image and Sunset article, where the image is displayed in the gallery. Thank you for your time.--Mbz1 (talk) 17:24, 26 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • Thank you for the response. I've changed the description to this: "Dramatic sunset with the unusual clouds". May I please ask you to let me know, if you do not like the description and I'll change it again. Thank you.--Mbz1 (talk) 14:27, 31 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Image:A day panorama - digital art.jpg

edit

I really really really loved this image. I just wrote about it where I nominated it for Commons QI and the discussion of it at enFPC was one of the funnier things I have read recently.

I am here with a purpose which is not to a kiss photographers ass, believe it or not. I was wondering if you could detail the things you did to take the photograph on its talk page. I understand that there are guild like secrets involved and things like that; it is so very cool though -- and after too many decades which are made of years which are made of days, seeing a different yet mostly honest photographic representation of one of these was very very nice. My signature doesn't contain a link to my talk page here, I was having some problems with a princess and her 3 not 7 dwarves. User_talk:CarolSpears -- carol 16:11, 30 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the comments Carol and yeah I agree that the discussion on en:FPC has been a bit dodgy - particularly the comment regardin the sharpness! Anway here's a few specifics regarding the creation of the pic. I'd been thinking about the idea for a while and decided that winter would be my best bet for the reason a few reasons. 1) The sun was at it's lowest so I was hoping to get a few more suns in the frames. 2) The sun set and rose at points not obstructed by the edges of the verandah. 3) The shorter day meant I didn't need to take as many exposures (although I guess that could have been overcome by using different intervals) and I wouldn't have to get up so early! So June was a good time to do it. I'm lucky in that the view here is what I get off the front verandah so finding a suitable scene to do the composite was pretty easy. The verandah also was very useful in providing a flat surface to place the tripod and allowed me to tie it to the railings to make sure it didn't get moved around much. I then levelled the two planes on my   tripod so it was completely flat. I don't have a fancy head with the degrees marked in so the verandah was handy in defining the edges - the panorama is slightly over 180 degrees (our verandah has a little bit jutting out) and cropped just outside of the frame on the left and right is where the verandah edge would be. I took the full panorama once every two (or it might have been three) hours after dawn - that would provide enough difference between each pano without making it too much of a pain to combine. Exposure wise I went for what the AE said for the sky in the section of sky I expected the pano to show through in the final result (so for the dawn shot I exposed for the sunrise and not on the much darker centre eucalypt tree) for obvious reasons. Although to give it extra feeling I deliberately underexposed the sunset (to show it's the ending/darkening of the day) and slightly overexposed the dawn for the obverse reason. I guess you didn't really need to take the full pano for each time of day, but I felt it would be good to have the full range to play with. After taking and stitching the panos in Panorama Maker 4.2 I blended them in Photoshop. The blending as you'd expect was very much a manual and labourious process - it wasn't a simple matter of splitting it into equal sections and deleting with feather as I originally though. I can't remember the exact technique/tools used but it involved work with the large feathered eraser and a feathered polygonal tool, alignment by making layers semi-transparent and warping/repositioning (my stitcher didn't stitch each pano exactly alike unfortunately). And yeah I guess that's pretty much it unless you've got any other specific queries about the process. You might also want to leave a message on Diliff's talkpage - he said a while ago that he was interested in making a similar image. Good luck with the dwarves! :) --Fir0002 10:10, 31 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
I second that. Quality and and the whole idea for this picture are really good! A few explanatory words would be interesting. Also could you do some geocoding? It would make your images show up on the GoogleEarth commons layer, and on the WikiMiniAtlas. --Dschwen 16:25, 30 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
What is the GoogleEarth commons layer? Hopefully the above is of interest. I might add it to the Guild forum for future reference --Fir0002 10:10, 31 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
Check out commons:Commons:Geocoding, the page could be a bit more structured, but there are a couple of examples. Essentially you have to add a commons:Template:Location template to your images. The Geocoding page describes how. There is an URL you can click, which launches either GoogleMaps or GoogleEarth with all geocoded images marked as tiny icons, or you can open the WikiMiniAtlas and see thumbnails of the images at their geo locations on the map. And by the way, excuuuuseee meee???!!!!! That is the view from your HOUSE??!!! Damn it, if I posted a view from my appartment it'd probably get deleted for being ugly. Life's not fair ;-)--Dschwen 16:16, 31 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yeah I do have a nice view :) But that why I'm reluctant to do much in the way of geo coding my images as this would be a bit of an intrusion on my privacy (particularly I don't think my parents would be too happy). I guess I could add the geo tag of Swifts Creek as a generic thing to most of my images if that would help? --Fir0002 06:27, 1 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I can understand that. In this case I'd suggest not geocoding those images as the general idea of the Geocoding project is to geocode the camera location and heading as exact as possible. You have a couple of pictures which are not shot from your house (streets of Swifts Creek), and some from the surrounding region (a couple of Mt. Hothham pics come to my mind), maybe you could add location info to those? Last time I checked GoogleMaps didn't have high resolution sat/aerial pics, otherwise I'd have given it a shot already. --Dschwen 13:12, 1 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Question regarding Image:Popcorn02.jpg

edit

Hi, Fir. Would you mind if I made a silly edit of Image:Popcorn02.jpg (after the manner of lolcats) and uploaded it to Commons under a different filename? I understand the it is licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License, so I could do it legally, but I wanted to get your permission first anyways. Queries from NZ

edit

Hi Peter, I've been in awe of your photos on wikipedia for a while (specifically your bird shots) and having looked at your profile I recalled recently the partnership with naturespics you struck up while trying to work out how to organise a similar arrangement myself. I'm in contact with a botanist in Auckland who has taken some great photos of NZ carnivorous plants ( a few articles on species found here still have no images at all) and he sounds keen on the idea of having them on wikipedia, I'm just not sure how I should approach uploading them - especially in terms of acknowledging that they're not my own shots. Any pointers? Also, I have recently developed an interest in photography having bought my first camera ( a Canon powershot S5 IS; fairly basic I know but you have to start somewhere) - my particular interests are wildlife and landscape photgraphy. Do you have any advice for me as a beginner in these areas? Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. Hope you guys are having a good summer! (sounds like you are),

Hey Fir, not sure if this belongs here or on the Guild Forum. Anyway, I notice that several other users have now got profiles. I happen to be second in the list, simply because I was second to create a profile. Not that it probably matters that much as I don't suppose it's a status ranking or anything, but I thought some of the others probably should be above me in the list. I'd move myself down, but don't how or whether you can do so. What do you reckon? --jjron (talk) 06:47, 12 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

    • Yeah, I was kind of thinking chronological order too, but I was thinking more order of being given the award, rather than order of creating profile. As I said I'm not too sure how to change the ordering (just editing that page doesn't seem to allow it), so I don't know if you can do so. I don't really know why I'm grumbling about being second anyway. :-) --jjron (talk) 11:10, 15 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Quick Question...

edit

Hi, If I remember correctly, you use adobe camera raw to do your workflow so I figured you might know the answer to this annoyance I've been bothered by for some time. That is, for the life of me, I can't figure out how to make the JPGs saved out of ACR to be sRBG by default. It always reverts to using Adobe RBG and since much of my work is for online use I have no use for adobe RBG. So, if you know how to make it a default that'd save me a ton of time. • Thanks for the pic, was interesting to see what they had done. Looks like they've cropped it considerably around the edges. Evidently haven't adhered to the terms of the license though, which is a bit frustrating, because I'm sure things like this are just the tip of the iceberg. Diliff | (Talk) (Contribs) 12:26, 7 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Not the only one with people and business's failing to properly attributed as per license. I've been in contact with them and no luck. Bidgee (talk) 12:44, 7 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • (In reply to Fir0002 re my talk page) Yeah, but that isn't really the point is it? They're legally not allowed to use the image unless they adhere to the conditions of the license. Doesn't matter how inconsequential the use of the image is, they're actually breaking the law and can be sued for it. Now we both know I'm not likely to do it, but stil, they should know better. I'm surprised you're so laissez-faire about it considering you have argued for non-commercial licensing on Wikipedia, sell photos online and have had your images nicked in the past. Cabbage Moth

edit

Hi, I wanted to make a request, and see if you can help me. I have recently uploaded a non-free image on Wikipedia [3], however, it does not show something that cannot be reproduced by a free image. So, would you please try to get an image just as good, or better than this (at the moment, this is the best image of the Cabbage Moth available, the others have an odd angle, or don't show the whole insect, or the background doesn't differentiate enough from it etc). I guess you'll get a better shot (with wings open), if it's dead, and also if possible, please try to put the insect on the same color background. If you're going to respond to my request, many thanks in advance! diego_pmc (talk) 17:59, 1 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Graphic designer needed

edit

I'm looking for a skilled graphic designer.

I need an image for a non-barnstar Wikipedia award with the theme "World Traveler".

I was thinking perhaps the following image, without the barnstar, and with the globe (or another one) superimposed over the Wikipedia globe (or the Wikipedia globe superimposed over it) - I'd like to see the world's countries and the puzzle pieces (with the continents more prominent).

The image also needs a passport laying on the surface beneath the globe stand (where its shadow is, but the shadow should be retained as well). The image's background must be transparent (not white like the background of the image below).

File:Interlingual Barnstar.png

Is this something you can tinker around with?

If so, please contact me on my talk page.

I look forward to your reply.

The Transhumanist 17:25, 16 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Transhumanist,
What you describe is possible but would require quite a lot of work as I'd have to extract the stand from the globe etc etc and I'm not able to spend that much time on it. Your best bet is to get in contact with the original creator commons:User:Erin Silversmith who should (hopefully) still have a layered file. Good luck, --Fir0002 00:26, 19 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Erin's not around, but separating the image was easy...

File:Globe stand.png

Making the background transparent was even easier (using the GIMP), but took a few minutes to find the right instructions...

File:Globe stand with transparent background.png

The GIMP supports layering, scaling, and positioning, which makes it easy to add components...

File:Blue Marble in stand.png

File:Blue Puzzle Marble in stand.png

Now all that's needed is the passport.

I just created this passport front cover, from scratch using the GIMP and Image:Wikipedia logo gold.png.

What I'd like to do is lay it down at an angle on the surface below the globe stand. But then it would need pages, because its edge would be showing.

What I need is the above cover integrated with the below picture, which will require changing the size, perspective, and rotation of the new cover so it can be placed on top of this one. Can you do this?

I just started using the GIMP yesterday, so I'm sure you're better at graphics design than me. I'm hoping you know a fast way to do this, so you can whip it out in 10 minutes.

I look forward to your response.

Image:Passport to the world2.jpg - your style, Image:Passport to the world.jpg - better IMO. No offence but the cut out job on the globe is pretty poor (which is probably why you found it so easy!). Anyway just FYI I'll be going to uni in 20mins so I won't be checking my talkpage till later tonight or tomorrow so if you post a message don't expect a speedy reply. --Fir0002 01:09, 19 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Luckily, it's in it's own layer, so it can be improved later, if need be, though the award image will be rather small, so it probably won't be very noticable anyways. The odd thing I noticed when cutting it out was that the edges blurred into the objects they were next to. If you have any tips on how to better cut out the original globe and barnstar, I'd love to hear them. By the way, nice job on the passport. I'm amazed you did that so fast - it would have taken me hours. Thank you! The Transhumanist 02:48, 19 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've already done something, but could you please try and do this for me; this might be good as a reference. But if for whatever reason you won't help me, I think I saw a project where you could ask for images to be retouched, but can't remember where. Can you point it for me? It turned out that the globe stand (which I got from the Interlingual barnstar) appears to be from a copyrighted image on a commercial retail website.

We either need another globe stand, or some new ideas for a "Wikipedia World Traveler" award.

A couple of questions

edit

Hi, I noted that you use a sigma 150mm lens for many of your photographs. I am considering the purchase of this lens for among other things the photography of butterflies. Since they are typically moving and one would want a reasonable depth of field, flash would most likely be required. The canon E-TTL2 connecting cord is rather ridiculously expensive for what it is in my view. Would a hot shoe mounted flash with a soft box or similar cause a shadow with the sigma 150mm? How much luck do you think I'd have photographing butterflies in manual mode? (A PC cord cord connection is far cheaper and also more versatile at the expense of E-TTL). Just thought you might be interested in a free site I stumbled across called TinEye. Its currently a low-key private beta and doesn't catch everything as they're still in the process of scouring the web, but it is extremely easy to use. Theres even a firefox/IE add-in available that lets you right click an image in the browser and it'll automatically find all uses of the image its aware of. Even if theres a watermark, or it has been cropped or edited subtly! Very clever and worth checking out. You need to apply and they'll send you an email when you've been accepted though as its still in beta. Diliff | (Talk) (Contribs) 13:45, 16 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

A Rather Interesting Abuse (?) of Guild Award...

edit

There is a flickr group here that uses the guild award on each photo it invites. There are literally thousands of times the award is put in the image comments of various photos, a good example being this. Anyway, you may be in some way affiliated with the group or have licensed the photo but I thought I'd let you know about it. Really, its not just that they are taking the award but the whole idea of a "Master photographer guild". Best -Fcb981(talk:contribs) 03:07, 15 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Wow, what did you do!? I was keeping my eye on the group yesterday and first the image was deleted (Not surprising) and now, this morning, it seems like the entire group has been deleted or something. You must have said something suitably acidic! ;-) I know you are busy so don't feel obliged to reply, I just wanted to say what you did appears to have been effective (and they got exactly what they deserved) --Fcb981(talk:contribs) 14:26, 18 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
And just in case you missed the changes on your watchlist, two people (or possibly the same person, one anon and one registered user) tried to remove both the link to the flickr page and the entire discussion... Possibly the person who nicked your image in the first place? ;-) Diliff | (Talk) (Contribs) 08:55, 19 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
And it appears that the group is merely private now, not completely deleted. The image in question is still visible on the second link's page... Diliff | (Talk) (Contribs) 09:47, 19 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I didn't see those edits. That is somewhat alarming... -Fcb981(talk:contribs) 14:40, 21 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hi guys - yes I'm happy to say that the user who created the flickr group acted very well in the situation and apologised and promptly deleted the offending group. The flickr user involved (possibly feeling a bit embarrased about the whole thing) was a bit distressed about this discussion on my talkpage, and since I've buried my hatchet I'll leave this reply for a day or two and then speedy archive this discussion. --Fir0002 11:26, 21 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Its not as though your talk page would have caused the Flickr user gross amounts of defamation and notoriety since only Wiki contributors would ever be likely to view it. And I know they were likely uneducated on the etiquette of Wiki discussions, but it was still a bit underhanded to try to remove evidence of the discussion on a page that they were not even involved in. How did they find the discussion in the first place? Diliff | (Talk) (Contribs) 15:11, 21 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
I think I know how it may have happened, and it is very troubling. As I said above, I was keeping an eye on the group to see what was happening after informing Fir. I had had no contact with the group previous to informing Fir as I thought it possible that he may have been somehow affiliated or had licensed the graphic for their use and I wanted to let Fir handle the situation as he saw fit. Anyway, a day later a post was made on the groups discussion board that basically said there were strange technical problems with the award not displaying and with group access. Again I didn't want to stick my nose in anyone else's matters but after another day and a second post about unexplained technical problems I figured that Fir had reported it to Flickr and they had taken action without notifying the group admins, I wrote a brief message to a admin of the group Steve Page that essentially said I believed the award was a copyright violation and that I had informed the creator. I linked to both the award and this discussion. Steve wrote me back this:
Eric,
Thanks for bringing this to my attention as I had no idea there was a TM infringement with the award code. That may explain a number of things I have been trying to figure out..
Regards,
Steve
