Aphids

Just wondering, how certain are you that the critters in the photo Image:Lice macro.jpg are lice? I'm pretty sure they're what we would call "aphids" in English. I see that the German word for "aphid" is a (one of your many) compound noun, "Blattlaus", that literally means "leaf louse"; was that why you labelled them "lice"?

Invitation

That's a pretty good idea. We should start drafting some more concrete guidelines on what to put in the timelines of different "zoom-levels". I'd propose a section for singular events in history, like the atomic bombings of Hiroshima_and Nagasaki, first moon landing or sputnik or the invention of the steam engine. Secondly it is a sad fact, that mankind is constantly at war with 15 armed conflicts going on right now (List_of_wars_1990-present). War (and the aftereffects of colonisation) is what mostly determines our borders today, so I would sugest a section for it (wars between nations, civil wars, colonisation, maybe insert acts of terrorism as well). Should the differernt aspects of the GUT be separated into their own barsets (like the Roman Empire timeline), or intermixed and just differentiated by color? --Dschwen 9 July 2005 09:20 (UTC)

Maps

Your idea for a simple mapping interface is great! I've been looking all over the Web for good, public-domain, usable (and free) tools, and finding very little. I'm working on making locator maps easy to use, particularly in Infoboxes, and I've made a couple (US, Australia) based on SVG files I found. I can use SVG and clean it up to look like the map guidelines, but I need good source files.

So do you need help? And can I play with your demo implementation? (If so, does it have global high-res outline data loaded?) Please let me know. And thanks for your good work, —Papayoung ☯ 05:01, 3 November 2005 (UTC)

By all means play with the implementation. Maybe set up some extra pages for toying around. I do have HiRes outline data, but please be aware that the mapprojection is still rather simple so it looks best for smaller areas closer to the equator. --Dschwen 07:50, 3 November 2005 (UTC)

Dynamap is the map software. I use a library to decypher the shp (shape) files and generate SVG code with a self-written C program. The generated SVG is then converted to PNG (using rsvg). --Dschwen 16:07, 3 November 2005 (UTC)

Hey , we have implemented a mapping application using Mapserver ( which takes as input shapefiles and gives a png image) .We wanted to integrate this with MediaWiki. Hence we wanted some help from your extension. We can not find the source code. From where do we retrieve it ?

Roman Empire

Hi Dschwen, good to see you working on the Roman Empire timeline. I wish I could do more on it myself. But I am currently limited in the amount of computer work I can do, besides my job, so I have to focus on wikistats job, EasyTimeline script update and such. In the Roman Empire did you leave out the 'Developments' block on purpose? It is really concise, maybe unintelligible without prior knowledge but a concise recapitulation/rehearsal after one read some articles. What do you think? [1]

The icon is very nicely done. But what will be shown on browsers that do not have proper SVG support ? (which is most, even Firefox only brought it in 1.5) Why not a properly sized png ? Best regards, Erik Zachte 00:34, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

You mean how many of these timelines do I have? I spent most of my work on the Roman Empire timeline, although I was experimenting with timelines on the history of wars, and planned on doing one on cultural movements (but postponed that to later). For now I'll work on the Roman Republic timeline, the idea is sometime to have interlinked timelines for the whole history of mankind (meta:Grand_Unified_Timeline_of_Human_History) --Dschwen 17:04, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

Hmm, To claim that a "certain date and event" as a "decisive turning point" is in reality factually wrong, and in fact mostly imposed by hindsight and common consensus.

A good example: When did Hitler lose the WWII? At the battle of Stalingrad ? Even if the German army had conquered Stalingrad (a not impossible feat) they would eventually lose another major battle against the russians. The russian armies were at that date not only outnumbering them in quantity and quality (disputed) but also due to Hitler´s megalomania simply better led (not even mentioning General Winter).

So why do we consider Stalingrad as the turning point? It could be the battle for Britain, Pearl Harbour as it led the USA into the WWII, or (my favourite one) the second in which german troops began operation Barbarossa?

Thanks for the thoughts on the morphology image. I am making it in Adobe Illustrator. I am not familiar with the SVG format, but would be happy to format it that way, assuming I dont have to do it all again from scratch ;-) Do you know about Illustrator and SVG? Also, is it possible to set the thumbnail manually? If so, several close ups from the image could make attractive thumbs, like Rosette or Whorled or Tripinnate. I have tried saving the image in SVG format(new version), but seem unable to do so while still maintaining font quality (see esp. the labels in the margin section). Any suggestions? Are you an expert in the format, or could you point me to someone who is? Thanks.

Tough one. You do not need an SVG expert but an Illustrator expert. Part of the problem is that Adobe Illustrator saves the drop-shadow as a bitmap. The bitmap is created using your special font. All other text is formatted like in an HTML file, with a style sheet requesting a particular font, which is likely not installed on the users computer, so the text gets rendered using a replacement font, which in turn looks different than the drop-shadow-bitmap. I do not know if you can actually embed fonts into SVG. That would be a solution, but I'd stick to standard fonts anyhow, just like HTML files do not use fancy fonts. That would also mean that you could match the diagrams fonts exactly to the fonts used in the wikipedia text, no matter which computer is used to display it. --Dschwen 22:52, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

It is normal on such pages which depend only on votes (AFD, RFA, and even the arbcom voting system) to identify those who are potentially sockpuppets, or those who are completely new to the system and may not understand how it works. Thanks on note regarding 3-D images

I wanted to thank you for your note to 3dnatureguy regarding some of his images, and their placement and documentation. While I want to him to continue to contribute, I'd like to see some better judgement from him in what he places into articles (Do they speak to the article, or are they just an example of output from the 3-D process) and how he places the images in general. I'd also like to see him provide a link to a solution so that viewers can learn more about 3-D images as well as sources where they can get the glasses for free. So again, thanks. Further from 3Dnatureguy: I think your glasses icon goes along ways to clarify the nature and expectations for the pictures. It is far better than any "clunky, arcane referece to "compatible 3D". It also allows an occassional, more extreme 3D image to be posted on a NASA, or science related article. This rule would ban highly effective electron microscope 3D images, and wonderful optical microscope images. In 1895 or so, the British Parliment passed a law requiring a man with a flag to preceed all motorcars, with the nominal pupose of alerting horses and buggies to beware. I think this is a well intended, but premature move to "throw the baby out with the bathwater". With your icon, and providing that I truly take note, defer to the sentiments of the several, and it is only several, offended editors, by desisting in further posting. This would give the real body of users, including kids, and oldsters from the 3D era, to speak up for, or against the inclusion of 3D. This would only come in sporadically, as Wiki real does not encourage the simple reader/users to comment much. From what I read on authoritive 3D sites, about 30 million pair of "anaglyph" glasses were shipped last year. Since you have been very candid in your noting my "sloppiness",... which I am working to remedy, your weighing in for some degree of moderation would be given considerable weight...I hope you consider doing so.3dnatureguy 04:12, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

3D comons

Moving the 3D images

I think we have gotten the majority of duplicates out of the list of images. I think that the easiest thing to do now would be to automatically move all the remaining images to commons and deleted the copies on the local wikipedia. Once that is done I might start going through and adding 3Dcommons templates and adding images to commons galleries for all the articles that merit it, and simply removing the images for others. The only other thing to watch out for is that some of 3dnatureguy's early uploads where tagged as non-commercial, though he seems happy for these to be corrected to a compatible license. --Martyman-(talk) 02:50, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

I can not understand why he is being so hard to communicate with. He is refusing to aknoledge my question about the licensing which has been asked multiple times now and is continuing to upload to wikipedi (en) rather than commons. He doesn't seem to understand that placing it on commons replaces the need to also put it here, as he is now adding (also available to commons) in his image descriptions. Leadenhall Market edit

I support the correction to the lean that you have uploaded, so feel free to add it as an alternative. I noticed that lean while I was nominating it but in laziness, I left it as-is. :) The perspective is probably not perfect either, as both edges lean inwards towards the roof and as you mentioned, your correction does not address this. If I fully corrected this perspective issue, I suspect it would warp the image towards the roof to the point where it would not look very pretty. Examples of FPC problems

I noticed you seem to find 'blown out highlights' especially anoying in pictures but I haven't exactly gotten a feel for them. Perhaps you could update Exposure (photography) with examples of underexposure/overexposure? I would then add your samples to Wikipedia:What is a featured picture?.
