Articles you've created

edit

Hi. Nice job on the Gilnahirk article you created. You might want to take a look at changes I made to make it look a little more like other articles. Notice that each article has a talk page where you can add comments that may not be appropriate for the article itself. You also should refrain from adding your user name to the actual article. People will be able to see you created the article by looking at its history. Thanks and keep up the good work!  :) —Wknight94 (talk) 21:52, 22 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

License tagging for Image:DSCF6404.JPG

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:DSCF6404.JPG. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

Hi Dom - I left you a reply on my talk page.

I see you're from Northern Ireland (Belfast in fact, like myself), so maybe you'd be interested in helping out with some project pages I've created specifically with a view to extending and improving coverage of articles relating to Northern Ireland.

Cheers. --Mal 09:54, 30 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hey again - I left you another reply. You probably have my talk page on your watchlist as you've edited it, so you can look out for any replies from me on there. :) --Mal 11:19, 1 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading Image:JetFillingStation.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

Maps

edit

Hi Dom0803 - good work on the location maps - I actually found out how to do this just now via the UK notice board, played around with it in my sandbox, added one to Dublin, headed over to the Irish notice board, and realised you had already explained all :-). However, I'm trying to figure out one for Greater Dublin - do you need to create a new orthographic map (whatever that is) or something else? Again, I'm trying to educate myself (albeit slightly half-heartedly), so a gentle nudge in the right direction would be enough :-) Cheers. Cormaggio @ 10:28, 19 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks very much, mate. Generally it's pretty simple. I can't remember exactly how I learnt how to make them, I just done a little bit of thinking on how the others worked, and generally copied it. If you go into the template page for the map itself Template:Location map Ireland and click edit, you can see the source code for it. My advice to you is rip it. Simply copy it, and then using a mapper get the image of the greater Dublin or wherever, and then add that image and link the source code to that image. Let's take a look at the source code and compare it to my key below it.;

{{#switch:{{{1}}}| |name=Ireland |top=55.45 |bottom=51.38 |left=-10.71 |right=-5.33 |image=TemplatemapIreland.jpg }}<noinclude>see {{tl|Location map}}</noinclude>
Key
{{#switch:{{{1}}}| |name=A |top=B |bottom=C |left=-D |right=-E |image=F }}<noinclude>see {{tl|Location map}}</noinclude>

  • A - This is the name of the location map. In Ireland's case, it is, 'Ireland'
  • B - This is the top co-ordinate for the most northernly visible piece of land. Use Multimap to get the co-ords. Only use the ones in the brackets.
  • C - Same applies to C, as B. Make sure your map in multimap and your GiS mapping software are the same. The more precise the two the more precise reading you willg et. Also, make sure you don't repeat North! If it's left=*.** obviously it's asking for the most westernly visible piece of land.
  • D - Same as B,C
  • E - Same as B,C,D
  • F - This is the image of the actual map itself (from your GiS software) in Ireland's case it is Image:TemplatemapIreland.jpg.

What you need to do is open your GiS application, and multimap. Get them both to the same zoom. Save your GiS map as an image, do any necessery colour editing if required, and then upload the image to Wikipedia (I recommend using a map with no location names or anything as you can see in my maps. Afterall, that kind of defeats the purpose of the location map. Anyway, upload the image, and stick the image name into the F field. Then take your co-ords for N, E, S, W (the ones in the brackets *.**) and put them into their respectful place. Simply create a page and name it Template:Location map *name of location*. Your map will then be available for putting into pages using any of the codes found Template:Location_map#Examples here.

I hope this helped you and anyone needing the help. :) If you have anymore questions just ask. If you wish, post the above text anywhere you see fit, but if you could, give me some credit for it. thanks. --Dom0803 22:15, 19 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Well, thank you very much! This is really good info - and I hope I can put it into action soon, and start experimenting myself. Actually, I'm more involved in getting Wikiversity set up, and this kind of info would be great to put in there about educating people about maps and templates (for a start). I want to make Wikiversity really practical for the other projects - so I'll be including this in some form (with credit, of course). Cheers! Cormaggio @ 11:05, 20 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
I'll certainly let you know when we get Wikiversity up and running (it should be quite soon indeed, before Wikimania anyway). From what I've seen, you'd be a great teacher of Wikimedians :-) Cormaggio @ 16:15, 20 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Photos

edit

Hi, If you're keen on photographing places in N Ireland, you might like to contribute to http://www.geograph.org.uk a project to get at least one photograph typical of each 1 km Ordnance Survey map square in the British Isles. There's lots to do in NI. There's also a specific copyright template in http://commons.wikimedia.org if you want to load your photos there too. From commons they can be directly linked in other wikimedia projects. There's an example of mine at http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5998 http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:DSCF0028R.jpg Helen's Bay railway station --Cavrdg 19:09, 16 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

For finding co-ordinates, I usually use an old-fashioned paper map or my gps but http://www.election-maps.co.uk is good is as the status bar shows the co-ordinates of the cursor, though the format needs a bit of converting - take the second and third digits of each and add the appropriate letter. --Cavrdg 06:10, 17 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Looks like you've done some good work on the maps thang. I've not had a good look at it all yet, but regarding maps of places in Northern Ireland - would images of the individual counties help, or have you got that sorted? (I'm not sure how it all works yet). --Mal 21:31, 30 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

NI Counties

edit

Hey again Dom. I noticed you created the Northern Ireland counties article. I was wondering if we should create a category also, albeit there only being six counties. It should be a sub-cat of Category:Counties of Ireland and also of the UK counties or whatever, if such a cat exists. I know there has been some conflict, specifically regarding English "traditional" counties or "historical" counties or whatever.. which leads me on to my next point: County Londonderry (or Co. Derry if you prefer) was originally County Coleraine. How do you see that fitting into the category and/or article?

A lot of fine work you've been doing by the way, from what I can see. :) I've changed the project pages a bit over the past few days - there are new sub-pages. I have to tag them all with the project template at some point! If you've any suggestions for either the Belshaft one or the Norn Irn one, please let me know, or throw a comment up on the talk pages. Cheers. --Mal 21:10, 8 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks very much, Mal. Much appreceated. That's a good question.. I'm not sure really. It is a little controversial.. I was considering slapping in the {{neutrality}} but I figured it would look ugly, I then specified that the city had changed to Derry, but the county had retained London. I'm pretty sure a lot more would have to have been changed, and it would have been very troublesom. Let me give your questions some thought. Now if you'll excuse me it's a Friday night and I've got beers to drink! --Dom0803 21:29, 8 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm off the drink for a while - antibiotics!

Anyway.. I thought, since you were into the mapping thang, that you might want to take a look at the UK Geography project talk page here: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject UK geography#New infobox maps option --Mal 11:50, 9 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hello. I'm a bit confused by you saying this is your own work. It seems to me to be a reproduction of a copyrighted map? Please get back to me as soon as possible. Thank you. Mark83 21:45, 23 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

And do you not think your comment that "Three things in life are certain. Death, taxes and Nationalists refusing to believe they walk on British soil" is a sweeping and potentially offensive statement? I think you'll find most republicans would object to the statement that Northern Ireland is "British soil". However as far as nationalists go I would suggest that the majority recognise that Northern Ireland is a legitmate part of the United Kingdom (whether they agree with the "right" or "wrong" of that). It doesn't matter whether you agree with me or not, you should restrict your talk page comments to discussing the article, not join others in hurling abuse. Thank you. Mark83 21:53, 23 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Welcome. I can see your point and I understand it was likely offencive. It's just my opinion in strong form. In work one day the person who sits across from me asked another colleague "How many counties does this country have again?" Upon about to answer "Six", someone replied "Thirty six". This is obviously claiming that the island is one country which it technically is not. Why do some, if not all, think that this is one country when to be horribly precise - it isn't?

@Mark: Let's face it. Who really cares? The map is over 10 years old, you can't see the copyright symbol, you can't see the creators, you can't even see some roads that are here now. Don't worry mate, the world will continue to revolve.

I forgot how much fun Wikipedia was. -- Dom0803 18:34, 28 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Aurora.gif

Thank you for uploading File:Aurora.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

Replaceable fair use File:NIFBDistricts.gif

edit

Thanks for uploading File:NIFBDistricts.gif. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. File source problem with File:NIFBDistricts.gif

edit

Thank you for uploading File:NIFBDistricts.gif. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. If the image is copyrighted and non-free, the image will be deleted 48 hours after 17:04, 16 November 2010 (UTC) per speedy deletion criterion F7. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. SchuminWeb (Talk) 17:04, 16 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom elections are now open!

edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. File permission problem with File:NTBrochure.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading File:NTBrochure.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F11 of the criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Aɴɢʀ (talk) 22:13, 13 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
