AfroCine: Join the Months of African Cinema this October!

edit

Greetings!

After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.

The AfroCine Project welcomes you to October, the first out of the two months which have been dedicated to creating and improving content that centre around the cinema of Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora. Join us in this global edit-a-thon, by helping to create or expand articles which are connected to this scope. Also remember to list your name under the participants section.

On English Wikipedia, we would be recognizing participants in the following manner:

  • Overall winner (1st, 2nd, 3rd places)
  • Diversity winner
  • Gender-gap fillers

For further information about the contest, the recognition categories and how to participate, please visit the contest page here. For further inquiries, please leave comments on the contest talkpage or on the main project talkpage. See you around :).--Jamie Tubers (talk) 00:50, 30 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Non-free rationale for File:EricSparrow.png

edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:EricSparrow.png. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F6 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Whpq (talk) 13:36, 13 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Tony Hawk Pro Skater article

edit

Hi, regarding the edit here, I still have some problems with including it -- You say it's sourced, but a game manual is not an independent source. That's probably not that big a problem, what's more critical is that we're repeating the manual, dumping its contents into the article which gets into gameguide territory as well as gamecruft. More broadly, we're listing information just to list information by listing listing the characters in this manner without any source to cover how or why each specific one is notable for mention. My idea to mitigate all this would be to limit the mention to a few of the characters and keep it as a passing mention in the gameplay section; Mention that the game features prominent skaters such as X, Y and Z, cite the manual and leave it at that. Eik Corell (talk) 00:31, 12 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Eik Corell: Thanks for reaching out! Well, I could easily find a third party source, that's not that big of a deal, I simply have all the manuals at home. I actually wanted to do a list of characters for a long time, as also all fighting games have one and I think the same principle applies here: all characters/pro skaters have a stand-alone recognition and name value, so they should be listed. I simply thought doing it the same way all fighting games aticles do would be more coherent, also I thought it would look stupid to just list them in the text in one big numeration. However, I think you have a point: I overreached a bit when I listed the original characters, since they are not really notable in most cases, I think I will remove them from the articles and we should be just fine.--DasallmächtigeJ (talk) 15:42, 12 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Haytham Kenway

edit

I appreciate the work that has been done here, but the consensus for that page is that Haytham is not independently notable enough for a solo article, seeing that it was a redirect for nearly seven years. Any information that was added there can be added to his list article entry. You mentioned the all-time lists and BAFTA nom, but those do not satisfy the notability guidelines for fictional subjects, as the lists are not in-depth coverage of the character and the BAFTA nomination is just that -- a nomination. The other passing mentions in the game reviews do not satisfy the general notability guideline. Etzedek24 (I'll talk at ya) (Check my track record) 14:46, 15 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Etzedek24 Thanks for reaching out, however; I disagree with your assessment. The article changed in such a fashion that the 2016 redirect no longer applies as a consensus. I would not call it a consensus in the first place, considering that the article has always been only a redirect. That no one was willing to put the work in as of yet does not mean the article/character does not possess relevance, Connor doesn't have an article either, and I'd argue his relevance is even higher.

The article meets every requirement listed for general notability, it has significant coverage by multiple independent, reliable sources. As per notability is not temporary, third party sources that cover the article's relevance over a longer period of time are needed to establish relevance, the article lists sources that almost span the entire last decade, showing his relevance when the game was released, how his grown relevance impacted the the design of Rogue, and the most recent sources show how he continues to impact the franchise to this date. You can't tell me he his not relevant enough if you have sources spanning nine years that tell you otherwise, especially the later articles about him/the game, that almost exclusively concern themselves with him when talking about story/characters. Furthermore, according to WP:NBIO, which I would say also applies here, being nominated for a major award establishes notability on its own. If that does not convince you, I suggest we seek a third opinion or nominate the article for deletion. Until we have sorted that out, I think the article should remain in it's edited form until a consensus is reached.--DasallmächtigeJ (talk) 15:11, 15 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

I certainly don't think it should be deleted, just redirected. But yes, a WP:3O would probably serve us well here. Etzedek24 (I'll talk at ya) (Check my track record) 15:22, 15 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
FYI I am going to do a closer analysis of the sources and post on the article talk page. So we will wait to do the 3O until I have done that. Etzedek24 (I'll talk at ya) (Check my track record) 16:24, 15 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Etzedek24 To make things easier for you, you can completely ignore the references in the biography section. It is only sourced because the media he appears in have intersecting timelines.--DasallmächtigeJ (talk) 16:32, 15 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • Etzedek24, just because no one has bothered to write an article on Wikipedia about the character in the 8 years since their first appearance, does not in any way indicate that there is consensus for a standalone article not to exist. Contrary to your claim about a supposed consensus, there is no AfD record or prior discussions about the subject manner's notability that we know of, so there is simply no positive or negative consensus at this point in time. In my opinion, the current extent of the sourcing on the article seems to meet the WP:GNG threshold.
Good work on the article so far DasallmächtigeJ. There is definitely room for improvement, but then again there's certainly no deadline and we can work incrementally. A Google Scholar search turned up some potentially useful academic or scholarly sources too. Haleth (talk) 16:37, 16 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Haleth Thanks a lot! I’ll look into the sources as soon as I can. The article surely needs some restructuring, but I think if we find some more sources and do some clean-up it could be brought up to GA status.DasallmächtigeJ (talk) 17:57, 17 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
If you intend to bring this article up to GA status, there are a couple of sources which need to be removed, like Lakebit (dubiously reliable) and Gamerant (vetted as unreliable by WP:VG/S). I did entertain the idea of an article for Haytham when I was on a writing spree creating standalone articles for Assassin's Creed characters a while ago. My overall impression is that while the topic satisfies WP:GNG, I think the extent of available reliable sourcing lacks the length and breadth for the article to attain GA status, but you might be able to find more, particularly on Google Scholar. The Slaughtering Grounds GAN

edit

Hi DasallmächtigeJ. You can probably imagine that I am disappointed that the GAN for The Slaughtering Grounds was quick-failed. Although I will note that notability is not actually a GAN criterium, I also have to agree that moving the content to Digital Homicide Studios might be the best option. Consequently, I have requested the game's article be moved to the company's name. Once the conversion is done (which should not be too far in the future), will you be available to re-review/continue reviewing the article? IceWelder [] 22:52, 1 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

I definitely will, just ping me when you have finished preparing the article. While I imagine that Slaughtering Grounds will still ne a focal point, I would imagine that there are also other controversies/interesting aspects about the company that could be included with the new broader focus the switch to Digital Homicide will allow. I‘m looking forward to the new article! DasallmächtigeJ (talk) 23:06, 1 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Ping, ping! I had The Slaughtering Grounds moved to Digital Homicide Studios and reworked the elements pertaining only to the game. I have re-opened the GAN under the new name and I hope to see you there. Furthermore, most points from your wishlist were already checked off, with one exception: a list of games released. As the article notes, there were 21 games on Steam and about sixty total (incl. on other sites) by the time they were banned from the platform. A list of the Steam games is here. However, there does not seem to be any reliable source that even mentions the games besides The Slaughtering Grounds, let alone those never seen on Steam. IceWelder [] 08:02, 3 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

The article Alonzo Clemons you nominated as a good article has passed  ; see Talk:Alonzo Clemons for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. Mcmahon leaving wwe doesn't meet wp:rumor. Several independent third party sources reported his departure. No need to include an official statement from wwe, a company that has interest and hides information. --HHH Pedrigree (talk) 22:30, 14 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Well, there were third party reports but there were also others stating he was never released at all several days later. Since WWE is a stock company and Shane not only a performer and producer but also a minority owner, they would have had to make an official statement concerning everything possibly affecting stock (like with other big releases) which is also a huge red flag for me… DasallmächtigeJ (talk) 06:32, 15 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

AfD for Brock Anderson

edit

You formatted your nomination for Brock Anderson incorrectly so that it didn't show up properly in Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Log/2023_August_14. I reformatted it using the steps at WP:AFDHOWTO

{{subst:afd2 | pg=PageName | cat=Category | text=Why the page should be deleted}} ~~~~

Replace PageName with the name of the page, Category with a letter from the list M, O, B, S, W, G, T, F, and P to categorize the debate, and Why the page should be deleted with the reasons the page should be deleted.

Alternatively,

  1. Enable Twinkle in the Gadgets tab of your preferences.
  2. Go back to the article, and choose "XFD" from the new Twinkle ("TW") menu.
  3. Fill in the form and submit it.

Introduction to contentious topics

edit

You have recently edited a page related to post-1992 politics of the United States and closely related people, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

  • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
  • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
  • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
  • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
  • refrain from gaming the system.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

Hello. You appear to be repeatedly reverting or undoing other editors' contributions at Doggerland. Please be aware that the three-revert rule prohibits making more than three reverts on a single page within a 24 hour period. Rather than reverting edits, please consider using the talk page to work towards wording and content that gains a consensus among editors. The dispute resolution processes may also help. Excessive reverting may result in the loss of editing privileges. Feline Hymnic (talk) 10:01, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

You gotta be kidding me. I consistently pointed out why it relevant and why it falls under WP:NOTCITE, I gave several warnings (as per the guidelines) while the other user simply reverted out of spite and didn’t seek any consensus whatsoever, and obviously didn’t even bother researching what he reverting. And you didn’t bother lecturing him although he constantly reverts, why is that? He is clearly at fault here. DasallmächtigeJ (talk) 11:06, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

DasallmächtigeJ (block logactive blocksglobal blockscontribsdeleted contribsfilter logcreation logchange block settingsunblockcheckuser (log))

Request reason:

This block is a joke. I am a PhD researcher on the topic and got blocked for stating the obvious: that this section is A. not neutral/objective and that B. if the major source used is someone who uses neo-pronouns this need to be contextualized. I was threatened by multiple editors with no quantifiable knowledge on the subject, despite using neutral language and staying civil. This block is purely political and if Wikipedia starts blocking people over others political bias and hurt feelings, that is just poor. DasallmächtigeJ (talk) 02:53, 2 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Decline reason:

While Talk pages on contentious topics can, on occasion, become heated, charging into a relatively mild discussion with things like "I don’t know if you went to college, but this is basic stuff and I don’t need you to guilt-trip me over someone’s pronouns." [1] is unlikely to do much but disrupt the situation. Because you have affirmed your opinion that the "block is a joke", I feel relatively certain that lifting it would only see continued disruption of the type just cited. At this time, WP does not offer differential behavioral guidelines based on educational attainment so your PhD is also not an applicable point of consideration for lifting the block. Chetsford (talk) 05:26, 2 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Hello, DasallmächtigeJ,
You are a longtime editor of this project and highly educated, can you tell me how other editors "threatened" you? I think if you want to edit here, you need to accept that any editor, even a PhD researcher, can have their edits challenged based on policy grounds. No one is immune from being critiqued. Liz Read!
