Thanks
editThanks for the 500 list. I'll take a look. I'm also just about to dig into Lion, I've just had some things I have to do. Anyway, I know its off topic, but while I'm here - would you mind taking a short glance at Template:makelist? It is a list maker I made, and it might prove useful next time you make a list or are listing something. I just need a second opinion on it, and since your around... Anyway. Thanks again, -- Anonymous DissidentTalk 03:30, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
- I agree, but I've done it this way to save from chewing up too much space etc.: the parser #switch: would be needed for that, nad it would be just way too big. The parameters sort of have to be each list item, because I actually cant think of any other way to customise whats in the list. If you can, that would be great. -- Anonymous DissidentTalk 04:07, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
- Actually - you are exactly right!!!!!!! I've done it using #if: Now. If your still around - do us a favour and delete Makelist50 and 100. Thanks. -- Anonymous DissidentTalk 04:33, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
- Ok. Thanks for doing that. Now I have to discuss it with ChoChopk. Cheers, ---- Anonymous DissidentTalk 08:10, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

I've asked Circeus to have a look at it (it makes good companion to B integrifolia)- it's amazing how polished you left it and the more I think about it the more I think we should run it through FA. I can take the strain batting off the criticisms and fixes if you're busy. cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 06:55, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
- There's still a bit to do in the "to do" on the talk page, and I'm sure Circeus will be able to find some more.
- I also have something else in mind here. Keep an eye out this week for me to add something extra-super-duper-exciting to this article, and, if you guys approve it, the other FAs too. Hesperian 07:18, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
- Sounds good - I'll keep my eyes peeled. cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 08:23, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
The article primarily needs a thorough copyediting and cross-referencing of other articles (cf. Taxonomy of Banksia, Brown's taxonomic arrangement of Banksia...). I don't know about FA status, though. Might be a wee too technical to garner enough attention (but you never know ^_^;;;;;)... A more interesting project might be to get this and the three subspecies to GA and go for Featured Topic instead? That page hasn't seen action in a while. Circeus 15:55, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

Distractions
editA busted laptop, a flight to Bangalore, and now an attempt to fix Intelligent design have led me astray from our beloved cats. (And then there's the idiocy that got posted to Sandy's talk.) Sorry to leave you alone on Lion. I had thought: what do we want to do about the capitalization issue on that page? Marskell 07:05, 19 July 2007 (UTC)
Casliber, I wanted to thank you for your guidance in structuring hippopotamus. I have submitted the article for featured article consideration at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Hippopotamus and will be working hard during the review to address any concerns that arise. Please pitch in with any ideas you may have to continue improving the article, during this review process or in the future. --JayHenry 07:13, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

- This is a wiki... you don't need my permission! But in all seriousness, the help is most welcome. I've never gone through the FA process before and I need all the guidance I can get. --JayHenry 15:02, 22 July 2007 (UTC)
Featured topic
editSorry, I missed your initial thread on this as it was at the top of my talk. I was thinking we may already have a featured topic: Wild cats of the United States. Bobcat and Cougar are done (which are the principal two and would have to be FA) and Jaguar is done. All that's left is getting Canadian Lynx in at least decent shape; I wouldn't say it has to be FA because it's not principally American.
I had thought that Panthera is a more core target for an FA topic attempt, however. If and when Lion gets done, it's only going to make sense to do Tiger and then Leopard (and then some smartypants will suggest Cheetah and there'll be no end to it...) We would have to do up the Panthera page itself, I suppose. As for Lion in general, groovy idea. But I would suggest getting the big cat pages themselves done first. But I'm tied up for the timebeing, as I've told you. I'll tell you when I'm back with a laptop and free time. Marskell 08:50, 22 July 2007 (UTC)
- Hey, good work on the Can Lynx. I would like Wild Cats of North America but note there are a whack of little felines in Leopardus that occur in NA. Colloquially, of course, North America is sometimes used for Canada and the U.S. alone (to contrast with Latin America) but if we took it in that sense, Can Lynx would have to be an FA too.
- But anything of this sort I'm going to have to wait on. I've been sucked into a vortex named Intelligent design. Marskell 15:45, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
Also, can you take a look at this one and offer a kp or rm? It's deadlocked between two editors. Marskell 09:35, 22 July 2007 (UTC)
Re:A featured article
editI know - you are right. But I dont know what to write that I know has the actual potential to be featured, and while that sounds like a lame excuse, I really mean it -- I struggle to find articles to write these days. And FAs need lots of references, and referencing - finding lots of references - seems to be my article writing flaw. I've written GAs, but I dont know what to write an FA on. I would be all for doing as you say, assuming I knew an FA-able topic to write on, and had access to a good plethora of refs. Thanks for taking the time to suggest this though, I really appreciate it. I will definitely consider giving this a shot before I try for the mop again sometime in September/late August. -- Anonymous DissidentTalk 08:47, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
- The previous is assuming you mean starting one from scratch. Improving is different altogether. -- Anonymous DissidentTalk 08:52, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

NSW is most certainly an idea...after having a look through...it sure coul use some more refs, but otherwise it has potential. -- Anonymous DissidentTalk 09:38, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
- Hey - I just had an idea: maybe I should try getting one of my GAs, History of poison, to FA status. It looks like, with a bit of a ce, a few more refs, and maybe a bit of a prose check that this oculd be getting close to being ready. Thats my initial observation. Would you mind having a look across? Cheers -- Anonymous DissidentTalk 01:24, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
- Ok. Thanks for your initial notes. I'll get started on working out the issues you pointed out on the talk later today. Cheers, -- Anonymous DissidentTalk 02:51, 26 July 2007 (UTC) (PS: I would really appreciate if you did end up delving into that Greek myths book; heaven knows that poison was quite a theme in some of those stories.)
Hey. I have done some things with History of poison - would you mind taking a little look?; I have found a book source and added about 4KBs more content, as well as trimming the present day a little and rewriting the lead. Cheers, -- Anonymous DissidentTalk 07:10, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
- I have a question: Is it possible to make the contents automatically hid, or is that too far against convention? Its just so big! So much unfilled space at the beginning, with no images... to be honest, it looks quite bland. -- Anonymous DissidentTalk 07:18, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

Re:Re:A featured article
edit(new section started to draw new attention etc) Hey again, I know the cogs stopped there for a bit with History of poison, over the weekend, but I have a new book from the library, with information thats not Euro-centric, so i should be able to get much broader coverage over this topic after I read it. Just thought I'd let you know; I saw you asked Alastair for help, thanks for that. I think that you agree one of HOPs main flaws is its lack of coverage for some countries/places in the world, but I should be able to soon remedy that. Also - have you managed to find any more mythology information? (its ok if you haven't.) Lastly, I see Lion featured attempt has started again; I'll be glad to get in there, and am going to pick up a few books on that from my library this weekend. Cheers -- Anonymous DissidentTalk 11:15, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah - I'm going to be pretty quiet the next week or so as I'll be occupied with life AFK but agree that the article needs to be less eurocentric. Good luck at the library. cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 11:17, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
- Thats fine. Thanks for the help you have already given, and good luck with your FAC. Hopefully, I should be able to get HOP to FA before August is out, at the very very latest.

Parasaurolophus an FA?
editHi, Cas; I saw you put an FA tag on Parasaurolophus but I can't tell that it was promoted. Did I miss something? J. Spencer 00:55, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

edit... for your guidance with the Hippopotamus FAC. I went in a little bit unprepared and unsure what to expect (Baptism by fire is a life strategy), but thanks to your patience and guidance I was able to make a lot of improvements and I'm (embarrassingly) proud of the result. And now it's like a hunger, I want to do more! I'm thinking of trying to elevate Pygmy Hippo while I'm on my hippo kick, but I'm worried it will be difficult because there's so much less research that has been done on those rare little guys. It'd also be fun to do some rhinos eventually. How do you pick your projects? --JayHenry 03:22, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

At last I made it!
editHi there, dear Cas! :) I'm so utterly sorry it took me three full days to get back to you, and tho I know you understand the reasons, it'd be in very poor form if I didn't apologize.. but enough of my sillyness. I'll be delighted to help you with those tags you mention; but I'd like to see a few examples before, in order to test them myself a little before point you in he right direction. Could you please give me a couple of links for me to check? And while I'm here, a very quick note to thank you once again for all your kind words and your guidance in the last weeks, when concerns kept flooding me. I'll never forget that. You're the best, Cas :) Love, Phaedriel - 11:19, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
- Oh! Yes, I see what you mean, I've ran into them s hort time ago myself, when doing some editing at Cherokee and other articles. I must say I'm not intimately familiar with them, but I don't think they'll be that hard to dissect and understand. Just give me a short while to try and getthe code for you, k? I'm on it! :) Love, Phaedriel - 20:11, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

Where was I?
editSo I'm back to my pad, have a laptop again, and the flu is almost gone. (Sorry I didn't reply to the last thread you posted to me—I couldn't really see straight.) Are you going to take Lion up to FAC yourself? You're probably most familiar with it now, so that might be best. I can do supplementary work there, while focusing on another to take through myself. Perhaps Leopard. I keep saying I'll go work on an astrobio article, but I don't think it's going to happen until Panthera is through. The cats are out of the bag, so to speak. Or I can work heavy on Lion if you're up to other things. Cheers, Marskell 17:19, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
Species bot
editSo I took a look at User:Marskell/birds and was astonished to discover almost all of it was bluelinked in just two months. And then I noticed that User:Polbot is auto-generating species articles. Almost kills the fun. Marskell 07:09, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
Question/Help, please?
editSince Wood Thrush made it to GA, I've been rather busy with studying, but now that I had time to work on it, I was unsure of what to add. When I compared it to the FA American Goldfinch, I found that American Goldfinch was longer in certain areas, but when I searched on the web, I could not find the same information for the Wood Thrush. After this, I went to WP:WIAFA and looked it through. It seems to me that Wood Thrush fulfills criteria b, c, d, and e, and although I'm not quite sure about the prose being brilliant, I do think it's at a professional standard. If you have the time, could you please look the article over and tell me if you see anything that would be a problem at FAC? Since I've never nominated an article before, I don't know what to expect, and anything that I could get ironed out before I nominate it for FAC would be great. (Also please tell me if the article is no where near ready for FAC.) I know you're busy, since you have that template at the top of your page, but any help would be greatly appreciated. I ask, once again, for your thoughtful comments. Hopefully this one is starting out in a lot better shape than my first go. Cheers! --JayHenry 06:03, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
- It is in better shape (yer learnin' quickly) -I went ahead and fixed some obvious things as I went as they were no-brainers and cluttered FAC pages deter reviewers methinks.... I have to attend to other things but work on the lead a bit if you can. The rest is in pretty good shape. Well done. cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 07:45, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
- I'm excited to make some changes, but I'm a little unsure how to proceed. The article has been massively refactored twice now -- I was in the middle of a batch of changes when it was totally juggled this afternoon. Think I should wait until the structural issues are sorted out? --JayHenry 01:45, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
- The last batch of jiggling was no biggie; just proceed with tweaking the lead. If you want I can help out just let me know. cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 02:39, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
- I've been unexpectedly busy in real life, and haven't had as much time to tend to this as I had with hippopotamus. I thought this one would be smoother sailing, but unfortunately the criticism hasn't been as constructive (or as informed) as with hippopotamus, and I've had little time! Thank you so much for your help copy editing and the moral support. I will have time this weekend to tend to the article, so hopefully I'll be able to address the concerns. I have plans for reworking the taxonomy section, the evolution section, and adding a bit more to description. One editor seems to be insisting that I delete the "Extinct species" section, but I'm hoping he reconsiders, or can help me figure out a way to rewrite. --JayHenry 03:29, 10 August 2007 (UTC)
- Circeus is pretty helpful. Will look later. All good. cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 05:10, 10 August 2007 (UTC)
Pygmy Hippoppotamus
editYes, that particular format does outnumber the other one. However, it doesn't mean that that format is the best for such an article. Dissecting the subject of the article has very little to do with it. For people who don't know what a hippopotamus is, it can be extremely more effective if anatomy goes first. Anatomy is not just about the inner workings of an organism - it includes habit, form and appearance and we need to establish that before we go into classification. Shrumster 13:29, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
- Umm...anatomy is more restrictive in what it pertains to than description. Anatomy may mean that to you but I can assure you it doesn't to most people. If it is so inclusive, why stick morphology on it as well? It is cumbersome. Anyway. more on article talk pages. cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 13:55, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
- If you want to go in that direction, "description" is too broad in any sense of the word. What is actually being described? You can describe an organism's ecology, habitat, behavior and classification. Those would all fit under "description" as well. In fact, the entire article can fit under that heading. Oh well, I'm tired. Whatever works for you guys I guess. Shrumster 18:46, 10 August 2007 (UTC)
- Well it could be really broad, as could "characteristics" for the same reason. However takan what most people would which is as a description of general attributes it is a better and more succinct fit than the jargonistic "anatomy and morphology". As well, it's what books use I guess for the same reason. cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 21:03, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

editWould you mind too much if I speedy closed it? I highly doubt it has any chance of being successful, and the article would have to be rewritten from the grounds up anyway to survive a second AFD. Yagan
editHey I was working this one up to FA and had started a stubby Symbolism section, which I was intending to change to Symbolism and folklore and add any aboriginal folklore info I could find when I found the page on Yagan. Not being sure the significance of the feathers I was wondering if you knew anymore and could add anything (or mention how etc.) to the above article.
- Nah, it's just chrome, mate. Pettigrew wanted to pimp the head up before he put it on display, and he had some cockatoo feathers and a headband handy, so he stuck 'em on the head, Native American style, without any regard to whether Yagan ever actually wore such a head-dress. Why bother about trivialities like ethnographic accuracy, so long as the head looks suitably savage? Hesperian 11:56, 12 August 2007 (UTC)

There are other ways to sort this out and when it is sorted out, you can go back and fix the user's edits. Of course you're right, but you're still an admin now and people get angry when admins start violating the 3RR. Go report him (since you're involved in the argument). Anyway, just my 2 cents. I don't wanna see you get blocked or pulled up or anything. :) Cheers, Spawn Man 04:55, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

editCan't get that particular article. Sabine's Sunbird talk 02:42, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
- Neither of my local university libraries carries it either, sadly. At least not recent issues. Sheep81 08:44, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

Lion (again)
editSorry I've left off working on that one. You know, I've decided it's actually easier for me to take an article with five sources and work it up to standard than one with fifty; in the latter case, I find it hard to know where to begin and whether I should go back and audit everyone else's work. (This is true on Europa, at the moment.) Anyhow, Lion is in good shape but there's still some unsourced material, such as the entire Variations section. I see the MSW3 is listed in the taxobox. Have the subspecies been checked versus it? Plus the prose needs an audit ("Being smaller and lighter than males, lionesses are more agile and faster and do the pride's hunting, while the stronger males patrol the territory and protect the pride, for which they take the "lion's share" of the females' prey.") Anyhow, I can probably source some general stuff to Nowell and Jackson when I get the file back on desktop. Marskell 13:40, 18 August 2007 (UTC)
- Ditto, I've left this in the too-hard basket on and off meself, but feel heartened when a few get stuck into it every couple of days or so. I left a message with UtherSRG for MSW and Clayoquot for CE....cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 13:43, 18 August 2007 (UTC)
- Although my wiki promises are meaningless, I promise to do a full CE of Lion, if and when you take it to FAC. I can do that much, at least.
- While mooning around, I (re-)noticed how good off Titan (moon) is. I'm going to cheat—a week's audit of prose and refs and ship it to FAC. Hey, why not. Marskell 20:31, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

Tim Duncan FAC
editHi, a bunch of us at Wikiproject NBA have been working on the Tim Duncan article and have nominated it for FAC. I remember you made some useful suggestions during the Toronto Raptors FAC. Feel free to leave comments at the FAC here. Thanks! Chensiyuan 13:46, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
- Hi, thank you for your helpful comments on the FAC. User:Onomatopoeia has attempted to address your concerns; if you have any further suggestions you are most welcome to make them. Chensiyuan 12:59, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

editI'm glad someone else understands the need to stimulate input and activity; I read your comment on the edit count user categories, and I couldn't agree more. — Deckiller 00:25, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Bald Eagle
editI would appreciate it if you rethought your position on Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Bald Eagle. I have found quite a few issues that I am disappointed you overlooked given the quality of your work at Common Raven. -Ravedave 05:26, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
- Well spotted. Will append.cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 05:34, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
- Appreciated, one more thing. It appears that both the golden eagle and Bald eagle have feathered legs. Compare these pictures [1], [2]. Perhaps the word "completely" is missing, as the golden eagles feathers extend further down the legs. -Ravedave 05:46, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
- Very strange. I wasn't aware of that - I suspect GEs will have more feathers than BEs but will have to check later...tired now...mus..sleep...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 13:51, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

editI have changed each sentence in question for the Augustus article.--Pericles of AthensTalk 17:44, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- I was wondering if you could apply the same critical proofreading skills to another article of mine under FAC review, the Song Dynasty article. A pivotal era in Chinese history. Do you have a bit of spare time?--Pericles of AthensTalk 18:07, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
