image copyrights

edit

Thanks for the heads-up -- you're right; I forgot to add gfdl tags to those images when I uploaded them; I just have. Two of the images you mentioned were not created by me -- namely, Image:Harvard Stadium.jpg and Image:Gestahl -- Amano.jpg. I have taken no action w.r.t. those, although the edit summary for the former indicates that the uploader took the picture himself. jdb ❋ (talk) 18:09, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Can you help me liscense these?

edit

Two of the images on Strath Haven High School came from http://www.wssd.org/pages/schools/shhs/index.php and I will refind the other one. Can you help me label them correctly? Thanks -Slugokramer

First of all, thanks for all the great work you are doing. On the above mentioned post of yours, if you see my post just above yours, I have made a comprehensive list of images by that user (just like you do). If you can also take in all those images, that would be great. (I am not a regular on en: I work mostly on gu: wikipedia). Thanks. --Spundun 04:48, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Zvartnots Pic

edit

I was wondering as to why you removed the the Zvartnots image from the Zvartnots Airport article. I contributed that photo to the article, since it didn't have one. Please get back to me on this issue.--Moosh88 19:45, 5 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Fair use

edit

I had a question about Fair Use - was wondering if you knew. The image I listed on WP:PUI Image:Pm_manning_sm.jpg is part of the Office of the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago. While such an image in copyright, since it was meant for display, since it is an official portrait of a head of government, do you think that using constitute "fair use"? Victoria Fairmont

edit

Dear Burgundavia: Hi! Thanks for your question. I appreciate the fact you came in and asked, because I myself don't know much about things in the British Columbia area as you do. I found the hotel's name like that at the Fairmont's company website. I was about to write about the hotel based on a show I saw and I found the hotel's history to be incredibly interesting.

I wanted to apologize for taking so long to answer. I havent been in the computer so much lately because Ive been having trouble, and also because of the one day reorganization at wikipedia.

By the way I have a question. Everyone talks about Vancouver International Airport, but how is Victoria's airport as far as the commercial area? I love those small commercial airports, if anything, because you never know what rare colored bird you might see there!

Thank you and God bless you! Sincerely yours, Antonio UFO Martin

Have you heard anything back regarding this? Burgundavia (✈ take a flight?) 05:01, May 16, 2005 (UTC)

No, I haven't sent the letter because I don't know where to find it. Alphax τεχ 09:26, 16 May 2005 (UTC)Reply
Hmm, ok, I am going to go to Phase II with this. Burgundavia (✈ take a flight?) 09:32, May 16, 2005 (UTC)
Found it - Wikipedia:Boilerplate request for permission. Who should it be sent to? There are two possibilities - images at noao dot edu - or - outreach at noao dot edu - which would be better, and how should the letter be worded? Alphax τεχ 15:31, 16 May 2005 (UTC)Reply
Just ask them to release it under the cc-by-sa 2.0. That is simple, easy to understand license, that is clearly free. Burgundavia (✈ take a flight?) 09:19, May 30, 2005 (UTC)
Sorry, didn't see this until today - I've sent the letter (a modified version of Neutrality's semi-formal image request) asking them to release it under GFDL or cc-by-sa-2.5 (yes, there is a new version!). Alphax τεχ 18:03, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Yes, that means commercial. I suspect the answer is going to be no. Burgundavia (✈ take a flight?) 19:36, Jun 13, 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for all the work on these. Burgundavia (✈ take a flight?) 18:10, Jun 14, 2005 (UTC)
As I suspected, the answer was no. Or rather "Since under your GNU Free Documentation License images can be reproduced for commercial purposes and may be modified - we decline your offer to include our NOAO images in the Wikipedia at this time. Thank you." Deletion time then. Alphax τεχ 16:50, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for tracking this down. Image is (unhappily) gone. Burgundavia (✈ take a flight?) 23:19, Jun 16, 2005 (UTC)

User:Soman

edit

Hi I saw your name on the page of User talk Soman.

I got to that page from one of his untagged images.

That the user in question uploads lots of images without tagging them troubles me. Because it leads to hours of work for others. Finding the source for just one image may even take more than an hour.

If he doesn't respond to your request on his talk page, I would support you in labelling him a vandalist. Or, perhaps prefereably, getting a RfC.

Gold Coast Airport

edit

I guess our definition of a stub are different. I glanced at the Gold Coast Airport article and in a few minutes I'd learned a hell of a lot, like the airlines that make use of the airport, and even an image of what the airport looks like. I got a lot of information I don't usally get from stubs. I was stub sorting at the time, and if you feel the article is a stub, I'm not going to disagree. -- Longhair | Talk 22:44, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Re: Nunavut airports

edit

I assume you're refering to the Cambridge Bay (and Baker Lake) entry. I gave the Cambridge Bay stub a try but I'm not sure that it's improved (look at the font for the water co-ordinates). Can you have a look before I do the Baker Lake entry. I wonder if it would be better to have a seperate listing for all water aerodromes. But on the other hand would that not mean yet a seperate listing for Heliports?

What other soft of information would be of use on the individual aerodrome pages? I have access to the latest CFS (and get the update every 56 days) so technical information is not a problem. However, general comments other than for one or two aerodromes would be.

Now what? I just tell them "yes" and they refuse permission? This doesn't sound promising. Alphax τεχ 15:46, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Just had a thought - maybe I should say "only if they continue to credit you as the original author, and give anyone else the same rights as you have granted us", since that is the essence of the GFDL and the cc-by-sa. What do you think? Alphax τεχ 06:01, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Ok, here's what I sent (compiled with the help of Znode):
Both the GFDL and the cc-by-sa-2.5 require attribution to be given for
any use or creation of derivative works from the original, and further
require that all derivative works be licensed under the original license.

It is further necessary for any derivative works based on the first
derivative work (the Wikipedia image) to grant the same rights and
licensing as your original image. This means continued proper
attribution (including the minimum attribution line) to the original
authors throughout all generations of the derivation process. Any
derived work along all generations will furthermore be granted the right
to produce its own derivative works, of possibly commercial nature. The
original authors of the image still hold full rights to their
0th-generation, original image; the license merely grants the right of
derivative creation, with proper attribution, to any future derivative
"generations" of the image.

If you do not allow us to use your image, we will remove it immediately
as it does not comply with our licensing requirements. For more
information, you can read the section entitled "Contributors' rights and
obligations" on our copyright page (viewable at
http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Wikipedia:Copyrights).

How to obtain more info from a person on a photo's rights

edit

Image:No19sqn1.jpg was uploaded and he claims rights have been obtained without properly tagging it. however i'm unable to contact him as his username is in red and i would like to see the whole "rights granted" part that he might have obtained from the said site. also under what categories do these fall the "untagged but rights obtained images", so that i can do them myself in the future. tx --Idleguy 09:32, Jun 22, 2005 (UTC)

UPDATE: It seems the image is a copyrighted image for which permission has been obtained. and i quote the rights that were granted to him. "Please feel free to use the images as long as you give proper credit." Since this image was uploaded after may 31, 2005 I think these images should be immediately deleted. Again please inform me of the process (as i hate reading help section lol) so the next time i'll be able to delete them myself or put them up for speedy deletion. tx --Idleguy 18:17, Jun 22, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks so much for all your work, you really are doing a great job. I've been combing over the images and making free replacements for whatever I can.. I've only done a few since many are of things or place I don't have access to, but I do what I can. Would there be a way you could easily copy some of the description text from the images to the entries? It would make it much easier for me to find images that I am able to replace. Thanks! Freetek pictures

edit

Hey B. Thanks for working at this. In regards to the images on Freetekno: The two from ontario were taken by friends of mine, in fact, I'm in one of them! I'm fairly certain that the copyright holders would not object to this use, but that is not enough; I endeavour to learn of their wishes in the matter. As for the czech pic, it was taken by someone I don't know, but is hosted on my friend's machine. Like the ontario pics, I'm reasonably certain they would not mind this use, but still I will contact my friend in the matter. I hope you'll hold off on deletion until I can verify, as the pictures contribute greatly to the article which I expanded from a stub today, Thanks Bennyp 00:59, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hi sorry to take so long to get back to you, regrettably doing things via, govt channels takes time. Though his time it was due to a prolonged vacation on the National Health. I am still waiting for an answer on the copyright of the images though. I have managed to do a bit of work on some of my images. However I am not now sure I wish to continue with Wiki after what I can only describe as childish personal abuse from a wiki user and a possible 3RR infringement. If you go to:- http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Talk:Arthur_Wellesley%2C_8th_Duke_of_Wellington , you will get the idea, following the user pages & edits of the two users (one at least a sysop) gives the impression they work together to impose their will. Diaresis and umlaut

edit

Hi there:

I noticed that on the article Sandra Day O'Connor, you made an edit with the summary "reelected does not have an umlaut on it!", changing "reëlected" to "reelected". As it happens, "reëlected" doesn't have an umlaut on it; it has a diaresis on it. This is a diacritical mark that indicates that the second of two vowels does not form a dipthong with its predecessor but instead has a separate sound. And, yes, it is valid (albeit somewhat obscure) English.

I haven't reverted your change; instead, I've inserted a hyphen because I find "re-elected" slightly easier to read than the non-hyphenated version (although both are valid English). I only write this so that you'll understand what's going on if you encounter a diaresis in some other article, Wikipedia or otherwise.

Human Rights Servey on Wikipedia (The final post of I_sterbinski)

edit
Dear all,
Wikipedia was recently a subject of intensive research of an huge international human right organization. A team of people from different nationalities and ages were acting on Wikipedia for 20 days, investigating previously noted anomalities of Wikipedia free editing and forming a final report, which (between the others similar reports) will later be a guide to all future moves of the organization concerning Wikipedia. Acting under an account of a real person, their privacy is to be held private. Therefore, very few private information will be revealed.
Also, this is a result of the lack of final possition of the organization concerning Wikipedia and human rights, which was still not formed.
The team's final post on Wikipedia, where they explain their actions can be found on the following addresses:

The web site of Branislav Manic Law Office and Patent Bureau states that the "former SFR Yugoslavia adhered to Berne Convention, Universal Convention and Satelites Convention." Based on this, I'd say your rationale for the images being public domain are not supported. I cannot find the public domain websites you took these images from. Please provide the links to me as well as links (or references) to material that supports your legal claims for public domain. Unspecified source for Image:GermanphotowithEnglishTank.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:GermanphotowithEnglishTank.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 21:51, 8 February 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Shyam (T/C) 21:51, 8 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

The tag which is tagged by you seems not to be a correct one as WWI has not completed its hundred years, it would be better if you tag it correctly with providing source information. Thank you, Shyam (T/C) 08:04, 9 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Regarding various pictures you deleted

edit

Although your effort is commendable, I am kind of annoyed by your mass deletion of a group of old pictures I uploaded. I haven't been around Wiki so I didn't have a chance to defend them. They were perfectly fine pictures, they were just uploaded a long time ago before Wikipedia was "tag crazy" so I didn't have the right tags. They were from Japanese wikipedia and what not, if you would have done a little exploring you would have found that out. Instead you just trash stuff because its quicker to press delete than explore. Sorry if I sound mad, and its not just you, but with out you addressing this issue with me, more people will continue to do this. ARRRG. Nesnad 05:34, 19 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hmm, guess I should have read WP:DTTR! That's supposed to be a notice telling you I tagged Template:Airport infobox for deletion because it's not being used anymore having been replace by Template:Infobox Airport. Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather Have a gorilla 16:00, 29 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

ignoring deletions

edit

The article Family of Barack Obama has already been nominated for deletion, please delete it. There have been three articles exactly like this one under different names, but people keep recreating the article with another name or re-adding an article that has already been voted to be deleted. Thanks.

New Scientist

edit

I see from WP:Resources that you are have access to New Scientist. Could you verify this edit please? http://en.wiki.x.io/w/index.php?title=March_of_the_Penguins&curid=2305746&diff=233048150&oldid=232642101 --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 11:01, 20 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I am sorry, but I rarely keep old copies of New Scientist and I am usually at least 3 to 6 months behind. That being said, it would probably be better to find the primary source for the prostitution claim. Infacticide, although I cannot cite, is common amongst birds and I wouldn't be shocked if penguins practiced it as well, especially given the scarce resources. Thanks kindly for responding. Today I found the NS article in an online database. Apart from the infanticide, everything else was correct, and the unexplained deletion by the unregistered user was not justified. --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 13:37, 8 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

MSU Interview

edit

Dear Burgundavia,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk)23:22, 17 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Amity Teachers Program

edit

The article Amity Teachers Program has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No citation provided. Kindly see WP:Notability for details on what can be included on Wikipedia.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

edit

Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in over one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed pending your return if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e., as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised and that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions). This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts.
