WikiProject Ice Hockey newsletter

WikiProject Ice Hockey Newsletter

Dear Bsroiaadn/Archive 5! You are receiving as you are a member of WikiProject Ice Hockey There's been more new thing going on at WP:HOCKEY, and I think this will help you to stay informed. Since the last newsletter sent out in August, there's been great changes. Read on to find out! Maxim(talk)

This just in:
Maurice 'Rocket' Richard Trophy has just been promoted to featured list status, while the bot was delivering the newsletter. Maxim(talk) 02:02, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

And I've just promoted Art Ross Trophy. And Clarence S. Campbell Bowl is at FLC. This should be the last update. Maxim(talk) 00:40, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
New recognized content

By Maxim

Especially due to the featured topic drive, there have been many new featured lists promoted concerning NHL awards. Here's the full list of all the 13 FL's promoted since the last newsletter.[1][2]

  1.   Hart Memorial Trophy
  2.   James Norris Memorial Trophy
  3.   Vezina Trophy
  4.   Conn Smythe Trophy
  5.   Frank J. Selke Trophy
  6.   Lady Byng Memorial Trophy
  7.   Lester B. Pearson Award
  8.   Calder Memorial Trophy
  9.   Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy
  10.   King Clancy Memorial Trophy
  11.   Jack Adams Award
  12.   Presidents' Trophy
  13.   List of Calgary Flames players

There have been no new good articles or featured articles. Maurice 'Rocket' Richard Trophy has been given A-Class status due to multiple issues raised at FLC.

  1. ^ The last one, List of Calgary Flames players, is the only one not associated with the featured topic drive.
  2. ^ At the time of publishing, there were 5 lists at WP:FLC and 2 lists in the "Holding cell", as there's been an accepted guideline to not put more that 5 trophy lists at the same time to, "compensate for the sanity of the reviewers".

Featured Topic Drive

By Maxim

Started by User:Scorpion0422, the aim of this drive is to make NHL awards a featured topic. A featured topic is basically a set of very high quality articles (good articles and featured articles/lists). In this case, the topic is NHL awards. Many users have helped, including Scorpion0422, Resolute, Serte, Hasek is the best, Maxim, Croat Canuck, Spike Wilbury, FutureNJGov, and T Rex/Dinosaur puppy. The progress has been very good; there are 12 featured lists promoted, and 2 good articles:

  1.   Hart Memorial Trophy (Scorpion)
  2.   James Norris Memorial Trophy (Scorpion)
  3.   Vezina Trophy (Scorpion)
  4.   Conn Smythe Trophy (Serte)
  5.   Frank J. Selke Trophy (FutureNJGov)
  6.   Lady Byng Memorial Trophy (Scorpion)
  7.   Lester B. Pearson Award (Scorpion)
  8.   Calder Memorial Trophy (Croat Canuck)
  9.   Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy (Maxim)
  10.   King Clancy Memorial Trophy (Maxim)
  11.   Jack Adams Award (Maxim)
  12.   Presidents' Trophy (Scorpion)
  13.   Stanley Cup (Earlier collaboration, very many involved)
  14.   Traditions and anecdotes associated with the Stanley Cup (Maxim)

Check the project page if you are interested in helping out. Although it's closer to being done than not, there's still work to be done. The next topic that might be tackled is Stanley Cup, but this remains purely speculative and in discussion.

I'm back

Hey man, how ya been? Hockey season's back, and so am I. I'm not sure how active you are right now, but have you finished the draft list? I still want to get the Devils to be a featured topic. I may not edit as often as I'd like to, but I hope to make more edits soon. In the mean time, to help get me back into it, is there anything that you can think of that I can help with? Or even do by myself if you'd rather me not touch something you're finishing. BsroiaadnTalk 04:23, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

Welcome back! Honestly, didn't know you were gone. I'm in the midst of law school and political campaign season, so I've been editing sparsely if & when I can. The draft page will only be done once there are individual pages for each team season, so I haven't gotten around to creating all those pages just yet. If you'd like you can start making the pages for the seasons; just take a look at the existing ones and use them as a template (also the template on the WikiProject page). On a semi-related note, I've begun overhauling Scott Stevens' page, and I'm working on it in my sandbox. The main problem is going to come b/c we don't have any pictures of him; I checked Flickr, but all the pictures are copyrighted or not free to use on Commons. So we'll have to figure something out somehow. Ready for the Devils season? I'm stoked, I got my season tickets at the Rock and I'm raring to go! Anthony Hit me up... 13:31, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
Hahaha, it's alright. Law school, huh? That's pretty cool man, I guess you're serious about the Future New Jersey Governor thing. The problem I ran into with the individual seasons last time was there weren't many sources, and there were fewer and fewer the further back I went. Stats, hockeyDB has that covered, but as far as attendance and game-by-game...that's going to be very difficult to find unless I can find some books or something with them. I'll try, though. That's good, that page really needed to be worked on...he definitely deserves it. About the picture, maybe someone could ask the people with pictures of Scotty on flickr to change the licenses or upload one under a free license? We may get lucky. Yea, it's great man, so excited. You got seasons tickets? That's awesome. I wish I could get them...let's just say I'll be at my computer tomorrow at 9AM (when single-game tickets go on sale). Haha. The one I want the most is the home-opener...but that's also the one everyone else wants to most too, so I'd be lucky to get those. BsroiaadnLet's Go Devils! 02:35, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

FL Main page proposal

You either nominated a WP:FLC or closed such a nomination recently. As such, you are the type of editor whose opinion I am soliciting. We now have over 400 featured lists and seem to be promoting in excess of 30 per month of late (41 in August and 42 in September). When Today's featured article (TFA) started (2004-02-22), they only had about 200 featured articles and were barely promoting 20 new ones per month. I think the quality of featured lists is at least as good as the quality of featured articles was when they started appearing on the main page. Thus, I am ready to open debate on a proposal to institute a List of the Day on the main page with nominations starting November 1 2007, voting starting December 1 2007 and main page appearances starting January 1 2008. For brevity, the proposal page does not discuss the details of eventual main page content, but since the work has already been done, you should consider this proposal assuming the eventual content will resemble the current content at the featured content page. Such output would probably start at the bottom of the main page. The proposal page does not debate whether starting with weekly list main page entries would be better than daily entries. However, I suspect persons in favor of weekly lists are really voicing opinions against lists on the main page since neither TFA nor Picture of the day started as weekly endeavors, to the best of my knowledge. Right now debate seems to be among support for the current selective democratic/consensus based proposal, a selective dictatorial approach like that used at WP:TFA or a non-selective first in line/calendar approach like that used at WP:POTD. See the List of the Day proposal and comment at WP:LOTDP and its talk page.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 19:09, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

Can you help identify this team?

Hey man, I can't figure out what team this is...and you know a lot more about international hockey than I (and probably anyone else in WP:HOCKEY) do, so I figured maybe you could help. Could you tell me what team is in this video? Frankly, I don't know whether it really is Domi and Brodeur, but how long the names on the back appear to be about the right length (not clear enough to read) and the numbers seem to give it a chance to be true. Even if hockeydb doesn't have them as playing for any team during the 04-05 NHL lockout, but it's possible to overlook a couple with how many people moved around. Anyway, does it look familiar to you at all? BsroiaadnTalk 19:42, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

Can't remember the name of the team/event but it was a bunch of exhibition games with NHLers during the lockout, kind of like a NHL All Star team. I think they played local teams in Russia, Sweden (Färjestads BK I think..), Finland, Germany, etc. --Krm500 21:10, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
Ahhhh, that's probably why hockeydb didn't have it, because it's exhibition. Hmmm...I'm going to have to look into this and hopefully I'll find something. Thank you. BsroiaadnTalk 22:54, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

Making the list sortable, somewhat.

Since you are the main contributor to this list, I figured I should let you know what I would like to do to it. Would you be opposed to me doing this, at all? BsroiaadnTalk 21:11, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

Ice Hockey Player Pictures.

If you don't mind me asking, how often do you go to hockey games? Only reason I know that you've gone to at least one before is because of the pictures you've uploaded (that have been very helpful, so thank you for them), and was wondering if you have more or could possibly take more. BsroiaadnTalk 19:52, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

Hello,
I don't go to many games, but next time I go, I'll take more pictures.
I still have more pictures from the set that my recent ones came from, so I'll upload them to flickr and if you want, you can post them giving original image credit to me.
Thanks!

Hello Sir!

Why did you edit out the part about Tommys paintball interest? I am his captain and I manage his official website and he have asked me to put up as much as possible about his paintballplaying wherever I can. Feel free to email me at info@teampimp.se .

President

When you said "presidents" here did you mean NHL non-team-specific presidents, or the team presidents as well? Because in the case of Lou Lamoriello, he is the GM, team president, and team CEO of the New Jersey Devils.[1] I'm assuming you meant non-team-specific, but I just want to make sure. BsroiaadnTalk 07:53, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

I meant presidents of teams in general. There will obviously be cases of players who are both positions and in that case two categories definitely makes sense should we go with a seperate GM category. --Djsasso 19:50, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

Scott Stevens

Well my seats are up in section 225, so I doubt I can get any closer than you to take a good photo. Worse comes to worst, we can always use a non-free picture and use it solely for his page under fair use, but that's a last-ditch alternative. Anthony Hit me up... 10:53, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

NHL Plus-Minus Award

Hi, you said you were satisfied with the page, but I was wondering if you could also throw the word "support" on there two, because even though it has the support of 4 people, technically I'm not allowed to promote a list until it has four votes. Thanks, Scorpion0422 00:10, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

LOTD proposal

You either voted on the original list of the day proposal or the revised version. A more modest experimental proposal is now at issue at WP:LOTDP. Feel free to voice your opinion.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 17:33, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

There have been a series of proposals to initiate a Featured List of the Day on the main page. Numerous proposals have been put forth. After the third one failed, I audited all WP:FL's in order to begin an experiment in my own user space that will hopefully get it going. Today, it commences at WP:LOTD. Afterwards I created my experimental page, a new proposal was set forth to do a featured list that is strikingly similar to my own which is to do a user page experimental featured list, but no format has been confirmed and mechanism set in place. I continue to be willing to do the experiment myself and with this posting it commences. Please submit any list that you would like to have considered for list of the day in the month of January 2008 by the end of this month to WP:LOTD and its subpages. You may submit multiple lists for consideration.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:LOTD) 17:35, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

List of the Day and Did You Know

I have a couple questions. One, is the List of the Day definitely going through or are you still trying to get support and accepting nominations to show people would be interested? And two, have any tips for getting any articles I create to be part of a "Did You Know..."? I see you have a lot, so you're apparently good at it. I've tried in the past, and it hasn't worked. BsroiaadnTalk 03:34, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

There is little reason to believe that anything is going to make the main page until people unite forces behind one idea. I am still trying to get things moving, but am dubious. We have been subtley sabotaged by the distraction of multiple ideas. I still very much would appreciate it if you could vote at WP:LOTD. This months candidates need more feedback. If I had gotten more participation it might have been a better sell for the main page. Right now we are looking at getting links at WP:FC until we can build up enough support for a main page feature. As far as DYK goes, just read the requirements. I think only two or three of my noms have failed. Make sure your article is long enough or expanded enough. Make sure it is timely.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 06:13, 20 December 2007 (UTC)
I have actually nominated one list already, and when I can I will look over some of the others and leave feedback if I can think of any. I really hope this goes through, I'd love to see one of my lists on the main page. And alright, thanks. Also, I moved what you said to a new section to make it easier for me and because they are two different conversations, even if it's on the same subject...the new section is at the bottom. BsroiaadnTalk 06:22, 20 December 2007 (UTC)
Nominating is good. Voting is even better. Vote if you get a chance. Voting is suppose to end at the end of the day today UTC. I will be driving to Memphis tomorrow so it might not end exactly on time, but your vote would be appreciated.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 06:28, 20 December 2007 (UTC)
