G'day from a wet part of oztraylia, your bot thingy descended upon the above name. I am very curious as to what the bot thingy is interested in. I have dabbled with te article at times and wondered what might be specifically the fault it might hone in on?? would appreciate a response! SatuSuro 10:38, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

I actually didn't tag the page. Alphachimpbot completes the simple and repetitive task of converting cleanup links to month-specific cleanup links. The actual tag was issued by Fortunecookie 289 here. That being said, I'll offer my opinion. The article does not appear to match the standard Wikipedia articles. Although the content appears to be there, it's format is generally non-consistent with a featured article (See Stuyvesant High School (a featured article) to see what I mean). I hope that helps. I've appended the wikify tab also. This comment is posted on both of our talk pages. --Alphachimp talk 21:47, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for your response, it helps. It will take time to fix from my perspective, and I must say there was less of an intention to be a feature article,as opposed to being closer to a list with a spearate article as a proper article! Oh well so easy to get distracted on the way! Thanks again. SatuSuro 08:04, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

Cleanup Template

I've just fixed some of your mistakes, so I figured I would give you a quick heads up. Cleanup and wikify categories are not Date-June 2006 or Date-June 2006. Instead, they are June 2006 and June 2006. I found this here and here. It'd be more convenient if you responded on my talk page. Regards, --Alphachimp talk 07:25, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi. There seems to be a bit of ambiguity over this. I previously used June 2006 but I noticed that someone changed it to Date-June 2006 so ever since I have used the latter thinking it was correct. Anyway at least I now know which is correct, thanks for letting me know. Forbsey 07:47, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, it's a really easy mistake to make. I've fixed every one btw. Thanks for your good work and consicentious reply. Regards, --Alphachimp talk 07:48, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

Your user page

I don't know if you know this already, but your user page seems to render improperly in Internet Explorer. The pic of the chimpanzee floats over some of your text, leaving half the page basically hidden. Maybe you don't care, I don't know, but I just thought I'd mention it. --Larry V (talk | contribs) 19:15, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

Hmm. I used the same formatting as User:Jimbo Wales. Trouble is, he doesn't have the same problem. I'll see what I can do. Thanks for telling me though. Regards, --Alphachimp talk 21:46, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

I have just checked, and it seems fine in IE at present - however the boxes lack their curved edges (but that is a firefox non-standard feature, so you can't properly get that working in IE). Ian¹³/t 15:07, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

I understand your frustration in my reversion of your edits. To be honest, there was no warning/statement for what I wanted to say to you. I did read your contributtions. I wanted to tell you that the spelling and grammar in your contributions were so bad (sorry, but it's true) that they were basically insalvageable. Still, it was not vandalism, and perhaps the implications of my change were inproper. I have reverted my removal and added a cleanup and copyedit tag. I would suggest that you work on improving the spelling and grammar, as they are a total disaster. --Alphachimp talk 06:22, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

bold text

Just a heads up, if you want to remove bold text, you should just remove the font, not the word itself. By taking out entire words you are leaving nonsense sentences that look like vandalism. --Arctic Gnome 16:14, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

Can you give me an example? I think I know what you mean, but I'd like to see for myself. Alphachimp talk 17:10, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
OK. I understand what you mean. I've been trying to go through Wikipedia and remove accidental clicks of Bold Text. In the process, though, I accidentally removed bold text that was actually use legitimately. Most of the time I went back and fixed the mistake immediately, but I guess that I missed the Canada article. Sorry about that. Trust me, though, it wasn't vandalism. Your edits basically destroyed the page. Other than adding a random image (which did not function), you made a statement that "masturbation fro women is fingering" (or very similar). Deleting?

Hi Alphachimp, would u like to explain me what`s wrong with this page:

http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Maja_Pavlovska

actually why it`s written this message:

"This page may be a user page mistakenly created as an article. Because Wikipedia is an effort to create an encyclopedia, its content is restricted to materials that are appropriate for an encyclopedia, in which case this page may qualify for deletion as a vanity page. If the creator of this page is a new user, and would like to keep this information posted on Wikipedia, the information in this article can be transferred to the User page of their account. If you feel the page is notable, please discuss the matter on its talk page."

I didn`t have intention to make a user page, but an article, cause all the details mentioned there are right, and Maja is a famous painter and song writer in Macedonia. I just wanted to help.

I hope to hear from u soon...

Thanks... --Majabobi 18:53, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

The page does not properly assert the notability of Maja Pavlovska. The similarity between the name of the page and your username, as well as your statement that you wanted to upload "your" photo, probably led the editor placing the tag to believe that you were writing a vanity page. I would suggest editing the article to say more about the notability of Pavlovska. Hope that helps. Regards, Alphachimp talk 20:30, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

Cleanup tag

Please note that it is never appropriate to substitute a cleanup tag.

Could you tell me which particular article you are referring to -- has I have done hundreds of tagging in the wikify backlog in the last few days and I have already been using the source you referred me to? As far as I know, I have never substituted a tag. In fact, I don't know quite what you mean. KarenAnn 00:18, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

Nah. The message is somewhat of a generic one. You didn't subst a cleanup tag, but you used a badly formed one. Check it out here. I have a bot that changes cleanup to the month-specific tags, but tags spelled wrong or subst'ed sort of screw it up. So yeah, thanks for your contributions. You got my generic message, and I hope that I didn't offend you. Hope that answers your question. Regards, Alphachimp talk 12:31, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for info. I noticed a bot going around putting dates on cleanup tags. I think I was trying to copy what the bot did so it wouldn't have so much to do and got it wrong. But I see there is a template with date that I can use. So, thanks again. KarenAnn 12:43, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

Re: Bot marking edits as non-minor

Bot edits are actually default set to hide in recent changes anyway, but the bot is now marking all edits as minor. Thanks, — FireFox 16:08, 08 July '06

They don't hide (and get the little "b" next to their edits) until you get the bot flag. I got mine after my 1 week trial. BTW, I approve of what your bot is doing. Good idea. Let me know if you want any help (Alphachimpbot is very bored). Alphachimp talk 16:12, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
Yeah well I meant they hide automatically once you've got the flag :) Feel free to help out with the subst:'ing if you want. There are thousands of unsubst:'d warning and welcome templates out there :P Thanks, — FireFox 16:15, 08 July '06

Quick question: how do you remove the non-usertalk pages from the list? For my cleanup bot, I just click the "remove non-mainspace" option in the file menu. But, obviously, user talk is not mainspace. Do you have some quick and easy way of doing it? Alphachimp talk 16:46, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
Sort alphabetically, which will group all the user talk pages together. Then select all the other pages and delete. — FireFox 16:48, 08 July '06

Mboverload's RfA

I am very concerned that Mboverload may not be getting treated fairly. See the comment I added below Cyde's on the RfA page --A. B. 04:33, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

All I can say is, "Wow." I'm shocked that that did not come out in the discussion. Alphachimp talk 05:00, 10 July 2006 (UTC)
It's even more disgraceful than I initially thought -- see the noticeboard discussion. This is such a hatchet job. It's especially impressive that Mboverload stayed assertive but very civil in these discussion in the face of really nasty provocation; that made me upgrade my support to "strong". I'm concerned that so many of the nay votes would have been yes votes had they been aware of this. I don't know the rules -- I know Mboverload (with whom I've had very little contact in the past, btw) can't contact others -- can we? Otherwise, many will never read my links unless someone lets them know about this. Unfortunately it's 1 a.m. here and I must turn in. Ideas?--A. B. 05:18, 10 July 2006 (UTC)
It's 1 here too. I don't think there's really anything we can do...this nomination. Let's contact mboverload and see what he wants to do about it. Next nomination we'll have a bit more to say. Alphachimp talk 05:20, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I was unsure where to report this guy. I know you're against vandalism, so maybe you can sort it out. He vandalised this page (Link is to the comparison between my revision and his vandalised one), as well as this page. Where do I report him? And is there a way to ban him from editing pages? Double Dash 20:01, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

You report them to WP:AIV after they have already been issued t1-t4 warnings. I'm only showing 2 edits for him, which is rarely enough to merit a ban. Let me know if you have any further questions. Regards, Alphachimp talk 20:45, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

Question

If you have a moment: please take a look at an edit I did earlier today on the Sing-Sing pages. Initially, I just tagged it for references/clean-up, but the more I looked at it, the more it became apparent that it was a straight "review" and had almost no facts in it. So I deleted almost the entire thing in the hopes that someone better equipped with facts than myself will come along and add to it. Was this the proper thing to do or should I have not deleted the entire thing? If you don't have the time, no problem. I'm learning, and don't want to needlessly delete other's work. Thanks —Preceding unsigned comment added by Laurajunedziuban (talkcontribs)

I think that you did the right thing. It's good that you're sensitive about "deleting" their edits (a lot of people wouldn't take that too kindly, but those edits appeared to be copied, not OR), but realize that they can be always "reverted" from the page history. The article clearly violated WP:NOR. So yeah, you were fine. By the way, please sign your comments using ~~~~. Regards,Alphachimp talk 23:41, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

SPAM

You reported my article on PESA as SPAM. I'm VERY new to wikipedia and don't want to violate any rules. PESA is a legit associsation. How do I create an article that does not come across as SPAM. Can you help me? Adamhersh 01:01, 11 July 2006 (UTC)AdamHersh

I really hope that this does not make me seem like a jerk trying to "bite newcomers". In its current form, the article seems to violate WP:WEB. True, eBay is a notable site, but it seems to me that a sellers' association is not notable in its current form. Anyway, to creat the page, you removed a good redirect to another page. As you are a member of the association, one might jump to the conclusion that it is in violation of WP:SPAM. This comment is mirrored on both of our talk pages, although it might be more convenient if you either: a) expressed your arguments on the AfD page or b) responded on my talk page. Regards, Alphachimp talk 01:10, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

Ok, I'm kind of starting to get the hang of this. I appreciate your help and now understand a lot more. OK, so PESA has been mentioned in many publications, held chairty events that have raised thousands of dollars for charity, and is recognized by most major internet analysts. A simple Google search will show you how established the organization is

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=PESA+ebay

How can I write my best defense? Also, how did you know I was an eBay seller so quickly?

Adamhersh 01:17, 11 July 2006 (UTC)AdamHersh

Because I considered buying your posters several times (I have a great memory for that kind of stuff), but I thought that your shipping and handling was too much =). I notice when people have feedback over 10,000. Anyway, I would focus on explaining why the article meets the WP:WEB guideline and is not just spam. You can edit the article to attempt to bring it into standards if you would like (for instance, removing any POV). Alphachimp talk 01:20, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

How is my new defense?Adamhersh 01:22, 11 July 2006 (UTC)AdamHersh

How is it now? It seems like I'm fighting to keep this alive. IS it always like this? Why are SO MANY people critical? Will Wikipedia definitley pull it down? Thanks for your help! If you pick a poster from my site I'll send it to you free of charge for all this. 70.19.43.251 20:00, 11 July 2006 (UTC)AdamHersh
I really do appreciate the offer. I'm pretty sure that the article will be removed at the current rate. Wikipedians really don't like it when they see someone come by and create an article about a business of which they are a part. Most of the time, these creations are just drive-by postings of some corporate material. Wikipedians really don't like it when they feel that the organization is not notable. I see that you've done a considerable amount of research into the policies surrounding the proposed deletion. As it is right now, I think that you will probably lose the article. I would suggest saving it in your userspace (I'll show you how if you'd like) and possibly writing something much, much shorter (people have trouble objecting to 2 sentences) sometime down the line (think 1-2 months). Another Question

Hi: I added a note to possibly split an article here: http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Ian_Svenonius

Can you make any other suggestions as to how to fix this article? It seems that others have also suggested this, but it has not happened? I'm not sure the best way to start on this. Laura June 15:12, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

I checked out the article. A huge section was copyvio from here. I am removing the offending sections. As it is right now, the article really confuses me. I would suggest that someone rewrite the article from a WP:NPOV that is a little more open and available to people that aren't critics.
Why do you want to split the article? Alphachimp talk 01:07, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

Weekly AWB spellcheck changes - V3

Good news! There are now 4 people on my spellcheck spamlist =D. Sorry I'm late, it's supposed to be delivered on Sundays.
This is a good week for you guys, I made a MASSIVE update, the list has pretty much doubled in size! It deals with most typofixing that starts with "A". This was very hard work but when/if I complete it it will be amazing.

You added a random fact from Jurassic Park. It didn't really fit....so yeah I guess it wasn't really vandalism. My apologies. Alphachimp talk 06:29, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

Split

I did not necessarily want to split it- I just thought there was a ton of irrelevant "bio" information from other band memebers, etc. I don't know that much about the band - just thought the article was a mess and was confused. Thanks! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Laurajunedziuban (talkcontribs)

IAF addition

IAF (Israeli Air Force) wikipidia page misses the fact that its pilots also had to face PAF Pakistan Airforce Pilots in air-to-air combat. The end result of what came out of these dogfight is a historical fact and recorded in books, available on internet and also a part of official PAF hisotry.

This is the reason that I want to add detail on this, but which get reverted everytime. Regards

Sorry, I'm a little busy right now. Could you possibly supply me with a link to the revert. As I remember, the edit seemed pretty biased, but my memory could be failing me. Alphachimp talk 18:51, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

Re: AWB Edits

How are you bringing the lists of pages up? Are you using "what links here", clicking "Incl. only" and typing "Template:Test" for example? — FireFox 10:10, 12 July '06

How do I link things in my article? I plan on adding more to it for you see I am a soldier in this unit and served with them in Iraq. I love wikipedia by the way, it is long overdue on the net that we had such a responsitory of knowledge and the fact that its interactive makes it even better.

Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Arthur Rubin question you posed

"What is a semi-vandal?" Is that a loaded question? The user is attempting in my view, to define the difference between using rollback for blatant vandals and not in content dispute cases. I assume there is a point to the question though, even if I cannot see it myself. Ansell 08:06, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

I've never actually heard the term before. I'm interested in his reasoning behind classifying a user as a semi-vandal. I also wanted to know what he felt made an edit have no value (I think this is important). I really didn't have any "motives" behind asking the question. Did it come out wrong? Sorry if this is confusing. I just woke up. ;) Alphachimp talk 11:35, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
I removed it. It wasn't intended as an attack, but I realize it could be misinterpretted. Alphachimp talk 11:51, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
Thats cool. I didn't mean to attack you either. I probably sounded a bit harsh on my statement above :) Just wanted to get an answer to the question of sorts before I voted on the RfA myself. Getting an answer from the questioner isn't exactly the standard method... I now woke up to that myself! Ansell 22:35, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
haha. And I just got back from work. I looked back at the question and was confused reading it, so it wasn't worth asking. Thanks for getting back to me. Regards, Alphachimp talk 23:06, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

Hi Alpha, as I explained on the discussion page, Jeffrey Johnson is a signifigant musician in Western MA, birthplace of bands such as Sonic Youth, Pixies, Dinosaur Junior and others. There is a revival of independant musicians, Jeff has opened for bands such as Apollo Sunshine and Scary Monsters. Also notable is a revival of the reknown of the department he was involved with. I believe a page for him is not frivolous. Thanks.

Please stop the bot and fix issues before continuing

Hi,

Refering to this edit by your bot, is there any use of substituting templates that are commented out. It only adds extra load on the server. Please stop and run only after fixing the issues. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 14:25, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

I am dealing with this issue. Thanks for the heads up. As comment is double posted, comment is moved to archive page. Bot stopped. Alphachimp talk 14:43, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
I did see what good it achieved, but I was also sure that had the never existed, the bot would have still edited the page. A simple way to make sure it does the right thing is to check if it encounters a "-->" before a "<!--" in the section concerned. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 15:03, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, but the list is compiled by me manually going through with a list of transcluded templates. Almost all of the pages on the list have a problem that can be fixed by the bot (although it skips a few). Alphachimp talk 15:06, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
The issue was fixed by AWB in their newest release. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Alphachimp talk 19:06, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

alpha phi alpha

I noticed you updated the Alpha Phi Alpha page and thought maybe you are a member. There is a Userbox created for Alpha members.

To add yourself to this list, add the following standalone userbox to your userpage: User Alpha Phi Alpha<br /><br /><br />

Using this code:

User Alpha Phi Alpha Userboxtop User Alpha Phi Alpha Userboxbottom

Alternatively, you can add the userbox as part of a vertical collection of userboxes (as seen to the right) using this code:

Userboxtop
User Alpha Phi Alpha
Userboxbottom

If you want to add yourself to the list, but don't want the userbox, just insert the following on your user page:

The user who made the changes vandalized changes to Alpha Phi Alpha is bobbydoop and/or mikeandike. I think its they are the same person. you can view their personal talk pages and the talk within Alpha Phi Alpha to see the level of vandalism on Alpha and other web sites. The version he reverted is one he created over 4-5 months ago. The Alpha Phi Alpha article is scheduled as the featured article for July 25, and I think that's why bobbydoop has reappeared to ensure readers see his vandalized version. I created a new userpage because my previous two (User:Brando03 and User:The Br3 were blocked by that faggot JDoorjam after an edit dispute over the Courier Journal. I hate my current user name, User:Sirrom nodnarb yerffej because I sound like a greedy jew or arab.

Yeah. Sorry about that. I'm not sure that it is allowed to come back after you have been blocked for other usernames. Re: GrendelKhan's RfA

I got the impression you misinterpreted what I meant regarding the statement about people having lives outside Wikipedia. From GrendelKhan's RfA:

While I do think that an explanation is in order, I think that this is a bit of an overreaction. People really do have lives outside of Wikipedia, and I think that administrators with them are significantly more balanced. Alphachimp talk 18:32, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
I'll strike out my vote, and wait for the answer. I wasn't trying to say that admins shouldn't have lives (of course not). What I was saying was that that could easily explain several weeks or a couple months of inactivity. But this is a year. Certainly there are explanations for a year of inactivity, but I would hardly consider it explanable by simply "people have lives". Anyway, I'll await Grendelkhan's answer. -- joturner 18:53, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

mboverload’s AWB Typofix update – version 0.0.4

You are getting this weekly update because you are signed up on the spamlist for updates about mboverload's magical automatic typofixing settings for AWB
Important Update - removes entries that make incorrect replacements – must have update

500 lines of new code, of which include at least 1,500 different possible matches, probably more! I’m up to “d” in the words to replace. Even after I get to Z (a few months) there will be a lot more to do because there are more varieties of each word to replace. One line can match 10 or more different variations of each word, so saying that I added 500 lines does NOT mean 500 new words – It’s more!

I now have a Sourceforge.net project!

I'll mark 'em as minor, it's just a bit of a pain, 'cause it's not built into AWB, so I have to change my profile settings each time. Thanks for the note. --Firsfron of Ronchester 00:35, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

Re: [2]

The white spaces, i dont think there is anything i can do about this manually is there? Other than request that AWB turn this into 1 line..

Or is there a trick to it?

The title, yeah, i will look at that!

Quick note - feel free to delete when done reading

Note that the replace list is actually updated daily - sometimes many times a day - to fix problems and add new words. These problems can be important.

Please check for a new version each and every time you use AWB. Add a bookmark to the top of your favorites. That will ensure you always have the best, most complete, bug-free version. Or you can get the same exact version I'm using at that second by using Subversion. You get to see how I work, change, and develop the list, edit by edit, since it shows you the differences between versions. All old versions of the list can be shown so you can see the progress the list has made. If you need any help setting this up, it's actually really easy, I'd be glad to help you out.

Download the latest releases all the time from the project page. Please update right now. Several problems have been found and fixed, and many many words have now been added.

Neutral POV

Hi Alphachimp, my edit to the Canada's Next Top Model (http://en.wiki.x.io/w/index.php?title=Canada's_Next_Top_Model&diff=next&oldid=64152352) was reverted. I think this edit should not have been reverted as the original version was clearly non-neutral.

Rather than matter-of-factly presenting what contestant Brandi actually stated during the show proper (that she believed the contest winner should be someone who was born in the country), the original text clearly inserted snide editorial interpretations ("greater sense of entitlement", someone who had the "accident" to have been born in the country, "photos and runway skills be damned") that do not represent what Brandi's articulated position. Whether or not the original author agreed with Brandi's perception, it is not adhering to the Wikipedia neutral point of view to put words in Brandi's mouth in order to hold her position in ridicule.

I believe you are right. Sorry for the revert. Alphachimp talk 23:16, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

On Wikification. Thanks for the "nevermind" -- I try to stay in compliance with Wikipolicies, and contribute in a useful way; I was very confused by the "Wikify" tag. I can understand the debate on AFD for Beta Upsilon Chi (and I think it will ultimately be agreed that the article should be kept), but I couldn't see how it was Wikikosher.
OK, let me know if you have any further questions. Alphachimp talk 23:18, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

Advice on citing

Thanks for your note and helps on the page on Nenagh I was editing.

I am aware that much of what I have added has no source noted. I have added a fact tag where I felt I could provide them and will get around to adding the sources over the next while.

However some of what I added is based on what I can only refer to as local knowledge - ie I am from the town and am familiar with for example the connection of the 3 Olympians with the name of the local Athletic club. How should I cite this or should I just leave it?

Thanks

Gramscis cousin 17:35, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

According to WP:SOURCE, you should only cite credible Third-Party sources. That being said, I think that you are fine with just adding it. If you have any other sources (e.g. books, letters, etc.), you could cite them, but I would not avoid adding something to wikipedia just because I could not source it. I hope that that answers your question. Feel free to contact me if you need any further clarification or have any other questions. Welcome! Alphachimp talk 23:50, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

Hypocritical

I wrote an article on our company detailing who we are and what we do entitled MediaMiser. It was actually the same format as another article I came across on Wikipedia on another corporation. It was deleted being cited as promotional content.

Now I’m noticing some inconsistencies seeing as how there is an article on Microsoft, their current products, and upcoming products like Vista.

I wrote the article hoping to link it to media analysis, since our site is a large information resource, and number one provider of media analysis in Canada.

If someone is trying to find out about a corporation’s background, what they do, and produce I don’t see why it would be a violation. This site is supposed to be an information resource.

Legally corporations hold the same rights as a person, and there are several articles detailing people from race car drivers to celebrities Wikipedia.

If Microsoft is allowed to have a wiki so should we, popularity should have nothing to do with deletion policy. Take a look at the wiki on Nike, it has an entire section devoted to all their ad campaigns.

It's pretty hypocritical to refuse content from a small corporation, while letting large corporations run rampant. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.42.98.121 (talkcontribs)

I'm really sorry for your frustration. I realize that it is difficult generating publicity for a smaller company, and understand the ease of adding an article to Wikipedia. That being said, I don't think that your article ([3], retrieved from google cache) met the requirements of WP:CORP. Microsoft and Nike have a high level of notability. They're international corporations (note that one of the requirements of WP:CORP is being the subject of multiple published reports) and are used in stock indices. As I said, I'm sorry for your frustration, but you have to understand that Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information. Feel free to contact me with any further questions. Alphachimp talk 23:32, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

token sucking

Actually, I never heard of it until Randy Kennedy's article, but it's in The New York Times and everything in the NYT is the Gospel Truth, right? ;-) But as far as the token clerks are concerned, all they could really do since the '70s or so was call a cop, but I think token sucking was near the bottom of their priorities. The article characterized token suckers as "guys on their last legs," i.e., druggies and homeless (not "street urchins"--ain't no Oliver Twist situation). In that context, it doesn't seem as far-fetched. -- Cecropia 01:32, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

Re: Hypocritical

Sorry didn't mean to come across sounding frustrated before. I actually enjoy these discussions. I just think that wikis should be an information resource available on any organization. Just as there are several low prominence non-profit organizations listed there should be organizations from all sectors.

That being said it should only be information in a neutral form. No marketing terms, or fluff, just facts.

I understand why they would enact a policy to leave small corporations out, because many engage in this type of promoting.

My previous article contains only facts, and no opinion. If I were to have written “This amazing company, with an A-list of clients…” then by all means I would endorse removing a wiki like that, it’s shameless promoting.

It’s pretty disappointing when large organizations are using their wikis as a promotions tool for their latest sponsorship or ad campaign and no one decides to remove that content. It’s equally as bad as the promoting I talked about before.

I think these rules are disproportionate, and could be managed better.

Remove the sites and information engaged in promoting, and leave the sites that reflect hard facts. This includes removal of promotions materials from large corporations’ wikis.

Let me know what you think.

I think you are mixing up what a "Wiki" is. A wiki is not the individual article, it is the site as a whole. So, if you say that someone started their own Wiki, it would be something analagous to me starting alphachimppedia.org (which would be awesome, btw). Don't worry about sounding frustrated or not. I can honestly say that I would be frustrated if someone deleted an article that I had created. Wikipedia tries not to be an indiscriminate collection of information. I could not, for instance, make up an article about myself, because I do not have sufficient notability to appear in my own article. The same goes for all relatively small organizations (unless there is some incredible redeeming factor that justifies a separate article). I respect that your article was purely factual. It was not, however, purely notable.
As for large corporations engaging in promotion of their goods and services through Wikipedia: Wikipedia is unique in that any user operating in good faith (e.g. not a vandal) can edit the content of an article. It also has a NPOV (Neutral Point of View) policy. You are welcome to change anything that you appear to be blatant advertising. Can you give any examples of what you are talking about? Template:Cleanup-comics-date

I've just now made a per-month version of the cleanup-comics tag that was cluttering up the Category:Wikipedia cleanup cat; now your bot can simply change cleanup-comics to cleanup-comics-date, same as it does with the normal cleanup tag. Hope to see the cleanup cat fully empty in a few hours... ;-) JesseW, the juggling janitor 06:47, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

Now made: Template:Comics-tense-date and Template:CleanupConfusing now works either way, due to the magic of ParserFunctions (hm, I suppose I could merge the two comics ones now, too; I'll save that for a later time). I ain't touching SPUI's little template-o'-trolling; I don't care about highway articles, SPUI is an idiot and a massively skilled waster of time, and all that rolled together - let someone else(i.e. the ArbCom (again)) squash him. Commenting about an entry and then having some implication that I am engaged in trickery

I am wondering what happens when an implicit accusation that I have been involved in trickery of some sort is made. For the record, I have not been. There is an entry called Thingbox which I have commented on as it is being marked for deletion. I argued that it should be kept, and now I see someone has made accusations about all those wanting the site kept being engaged in "sockpuppetry". This is not true in my case. I have one account on wikipedia, and I have made contributions in other areas (including reversing and expanding the Haslington entry after some people re-wrote it cliaming that it was a "kingdom" and they and their friends ran it!"). Neither have I been "ordered" in any way to contribute to this discussion about Thingbox.

I would like your advice about this. ddstretch 10:26, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks! I look forward to your comments. ddstretch 22:39, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
I've reviewed the AfD and it seems pretty obvious to me that that was somewhat of a baseless accusation. A lot of times, when an established user sees a spate of new users voting in an afd (a new user is usually characterized by an unfamiliar username and a red link to their userpage), he assumes that it is an instance of sockpuppetry. I really wouldn't worry about this too much, unless a formal accusation is leveled against you at Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets. Anyway, feel free to contact me with any further questions and Welcome to Wikipedia! Alphachimp talk 23:42, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for taking the time to review and reply. I appreciate it. Thanks also for the welcome to wikipedia! ddstretch 08:49, 19 July 2006 (UTC) Sorry to come back to you, but there is a continued issue of a rather "highhanded" attitude that some people are taking towards myself (and may be others). As Anon writes below, there is an issue of accusations being made, and being continued to be made, based on suppositions about the past behaviours of other people (not the people having the accusations made against them in this instance) just because, for example, I had a long break from my initial use and contributions to wikipedia. The whole experience has been off-putting, and, I might suggest, detrimental to the image of wikipedia. Instead, I am now accused of wikilawyering. I think these kinds of accusations need some response, though I suspect each response is likely to be viewed by some as being some sort of "failing" on the part of those who feel that their characters or behaviours have been unfairly criticized and that responses are needed. It is in this way that unsubstantiated accusations can continue to be made and be unchallenged. It is all very sad. ddstretch 12:58, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

Dear Alpha, I must tell you I am completely impressed by the incredible levels of activity you've been consistently demonstrating since months ago, as well as your quick grasp of policy - wow!. Tho I'm positive I'm not original in the least, I must let it out of my system and say it, you are SO clearly great admin material, that it almost blinds me to watch at your contribs! ;) Needless to say, when the day comes for you to go for adminship (which is right around the corner, I bet), you can easily count on an enthusiastic "yay" from me. But above everything else, the main reason why I decided to drop by was to tell you that I value your humane approach to the project - now that, is way harder to find, and for that, not only you have my admiration, but my wholehearted gratitude as well. Too many times we see stressful and regretable situations that could have been easily solved with just a little good will - and at times like that, I hope others would follow your example. Finally, I am rather puzzled that nobody has seen fit to throw one of these shuriken at you yet - perhaps I can solve that? ;) (or, I can just present it to you in a velvet box instead - what do you prefer? ;) Keep it up, my dear Alpha, and should you ever need my help, or if you just feel like talking, you know where to find me, right? Big hugs, Phaedriel The Wiki Soundtrack! - 19:56, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

Anon writes

I think you have elided away from the point, User:alphachimp, or at least as far as the events are significant to me.

The objector made a direct accusation without supplying any supporting evidence. As I know that several of the contributors to the AfD page are distinct carbon-based humanoids, he has libeled them all. Furthermore, he has brought the discussion to a halt by libelling any subsequent contributor who opposes deletion. I am not, by using a legal term, advising a legal remedy -- that way madness and bankruptcy lie! I am simply pointing out that there is a reason in law why it is wrongful to make false accusations and I would ask you to point me to the appropriate rememdy within Wikipedia for an unsupported accusation against fellow contributors.

A bun-fight on the AfD page is not a satisfactory remedy.

User:GWO must either present evidence to support his claim or retract it. How do I invoke this challenge?

The objector's posting was directly responsible for my NOT putting forward a new argument in favour of retention. What am I to do to prevent being subject to this 'prior restraint' which he has invoked?

FYI - the original posting:

   * Delete, nn website indulging in shocking sock puppetry. -- GWO

May I also clarify my motivations:

it is not 'offence' or 'indignation' at having been bullied out of an AfD. It is the fact that the actions of a contributor on an AfD page have been highly disruptive to the editing process.

User page vandalism

Hey Alphachimp. You are very welcome. The vandal has now been blocked. Best, Gwernol 20:14, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

Mystery: Cleanup Tag in Sagrada Familia Article.

Hello, Alphachimp. Apparently last 18 July 2006 your Alphachimpbot tool re-added, for no apparent reason, a cleanup tag to the Sagrada Familia article.

Last February user UrbaneLegend politely asked: "Could the person who tagged this article for cleanup please say why. Templates are useless by themselves. Furthermore, the page looks fine to me." ... He/she got no answer, so he/she went on to remove the tag on March.

Now (July 2006) the cleanup tag is back again, apparently thanks to your bot. I agree with user UrbaneLegend: the article looks fine to me, too. I wonder, what needs to be cleaned up? I find it interesting and informative, with no language problems, no mistakes, no useless info. Perhaps you could teach us about what has been found wrong in the article?

Regards, AVM 00:09, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

I don't usually comment on what was wrong with the article, but I can comment on what my bot did. My bot only sorts articles for cleanup that have already been flagged by another user. In this edit, an IP address flags the article for cleanup. The next day, my bot changes the tag to the updated version here. You can watch it all transpire in the article history here. I'm fully convinced that there is nothing wrong with my bot's operation. Feel free to contact me with any further questions. Alphachimp talk 01:07, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
Thank you! After studying/following your response, I noticed the article's title was misspelled, so I decided to move it, and experimentally removed the cleanup tag. Let's see what happens next. AVM 01:55, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

Help!! Article Constantly being Vandalized!

The GraalOnline article is constantly being vandalized by its administration in an attempt to remove any information on an Unofficial Forums created by members and also any criticism towards them.

We have made several attempts to discuss this, but Stefan and Unixmad the administrators of the game, keep vandalizing it.

I have attempted to post a neutrality template in order to get them to try and DISCUSS removing what the players have written, but they persist. The neutrality of this article is HEAVILY threatened now as most players are growing tired of having to change every little thing they do.

I would appreciate it if you could step in and remind them that this is not their website or their game and they can not censor out things they do not want readers to read.

Thanks so much!! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Warcaptain (talkcontribs)

I would agree that there is a good bit of edit warring going on at GraalOnline. I would suggest bringing the case before the mediation cabal. I would caution that, although it is good to include criticism of articles, it is generally a bad idea to put things in that are not notable. It's also a bad idea to engage in edit or wheel warring. I've restored my welcome message. It is considered back practice to remove messages from your talk page. feel free to get back with me with any further questions. Alphachimp talk 21:01, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

Did you ever look at why i have reverted the GraalOnline article ? I have reverted the Criticism section because User:Warcaptain keep reverting to a version containing personal attacks against me. Is it allowed on wikipedia to put such text ? "GraalOnline's manager, Stéphane Portha, is viewed by critics as a harsh individual" Also me and lot of others have discussed the Criticism section on the discussion page and it have been decided to not put personal attacks neither advertise the User:Warcaptain private forum (UGCC) on an article about the online game Graalonline. I have also open a Request for Comment about the Criticism section and User:Warcaptain have even not make a statements about the dispute.

Also you warn me when User:Warcaptain have reverted the article 5 times today.

Graal unixmad 02:22, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

User talk:Warcaptain

User:Warcaptain have already received a 3RR Violation and also final warning for making personal Attacks but he again revert the page to a very old version with personal attack, false information and advertising for User:Warcaptain personal forum.

Me (The manager and creator of the game), the technical staff including Stefan Knorr the technical director, lot of players have written the article and are discussing how to improve it but people like this User:Warcaptain are ruining all our work and are using wikipedia for revange because they have been banned from the game for cheating or not respecting the rule !

We have followed all wikipedia rules, one by one including lot of discussion, mediation, request for comment and all we get is a warning from you for reverting the article to the state it was !

Do you think it is really fair ?

Graal unixmad 02:35, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

User_talk:Graal_unixmad

Can you please remove the warning you have put on my talk page, i have modified the GraalOnline web page because User:Warcaptain have vandalized it. It's not fair at all that this warning stay on my talk page when i am respecting all wikipedia rules, i have spend a good part of my week-end studying wikipedia rules and help writing the Graalonline article Graal unixmad 03:07, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

GraalOnline article

Hello.

You will notice that unixmad and Bingolice share very similar speech patterns. I believe this user has two accounts to escape the 3RR.

User:Bingolice Di4gram 03:20, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

User:Warcaptain have modified my talk page with a 4 level warning when i have not changed anything since 2 hours

User:Warcaptain have added a level of warning on my personal page when i have not modified anything since 2 hours

[[User:Warcaptain have declared war to the GraalOnline article and to me. He have been warned a few time for reverting articles. Lastly he have added a level of warning to my User_talk:Graal_unixmad when i have not modified anything. Something should be done to stop this.

I also ask mediation to be done on the GraalOnline web page.

Thanks for your Help.

Graal unixmad 03:53, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

Yes, I'm adding yet another section to your talk page about the GraalOnline article...

Sorry, but I was just wondering would you like to give your views on what happened as a second mediator once we have got all the statements? Killfest2 (Talk) 04:28, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

Woman

Sir why is it that you feel that the changes I made are not acceptable. Children do use this, and the first thing they see when they log on to do a report on women is a naked women. We need to put a diagram first and not a naked women. I mean wow at least give them a warning or something. Thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by NaldoOfThePlains (talkcontribs)

Thank you for your attempts to improve Wikipedia. However, I would like to remind you that Wikipedia is not censored for minors, not even for profanity or pornography. You are welcome to remove clearly offensive material or inappropriate obscenities if they were added as vandalism, but please do not remove/censor profanities or remove/disclaim sexually explicit material or links that are relevant to the article. In the meantime, please be bold and continue contributing to Wikipedia. Thank you!
I'm sorry, I sympathize with your concerns, but your edits are NOT acceptable. Alphachimp talk 02:33, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

Great point however...

I mean, do you feel the need to put the naked women first. If you truly sympethize with my concerns, you(with all the respect you have shown me)would say "You know what it is true that the diagram Naldo placed served the same purpose as that nude woman." In fact, if you look at the bottom of the page you would be pleased to find many images of nude women. A person can merely take the diagram which you can see and simply switch that image for the other. So you see, no one needs to remove the original image we simply place it with all the other pictures at th bottom and place the diagram at the top. Think of it this way, say that woman was your daughter and her photo was in the pedia. Would you not be offended that everyone was gawking at her. But guess what sir, someone is that womans father and we must treat this as if that man was in the room with us as we view this content. I leave it at that sir, you seem quite sensible, so I'll leave it to your heart to decide the issue. But yes, sir, you do make a point, the image is not against any rule in wikipedia, it should just be a moral rule that all men should follow. Thank you.

Clearing up some facts

Unfortunatley not only was the ip shared but the user account as well. Please excuse some immature vandalism and i take blame for leaving my laptop notebook unattended. Thank you--Yasha I 05:20, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

Weekly AWB spellcheck changes - 0.0.8 and uberness

  • Good news, I now have a new, fancy, professional wikipedia project page (READ EVERY LINE ITS A REQUIREMENT!!!) and an easy shortcut: [WP:RETF]. I have added every g word and EVERY variation of each word. No, I'm not kidding. I used the dictionary to look for every possible variation. Took FOREVER. =)
  • I have a cool new logo, too!
  • Bill Gates has offered me $1.3 million in venture capital. I'll be taking him up on that offer.
  • Important notice: It has been brought to my attention that several users were unable to open the zip files because they were "corrupted". They weren't corrupted, just using a compression style different than the crappy extractor built in to XP uses. From now all all releases will be checked against the XP extractor. Sorry guys.
  • Don't worry about the download size - it doesn't mean anything. It's the extracted size that matters.
  • Tell your buddies.
  • 0.0.8 is out - go update now.

STOP IGGY

The STOP IGGY website is a legitimate addition to the Michael Ignatieff page - it is an Opponent Site to his candidacy for Liberal Party leader, and has previously been labelled as such, until someone removed the label. It is rude and incorrect of you to call this website "personal advertising". If this line of logic were to be upheld, then any webpages pretaining to Ignatieff's candidacy should also have been taken down by you - including his official campaign website, which surely falls under the category of "personal advertising". —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.131.70.118 (talkcontribs)

The only resolution i can accept at this moment for this vehement attacks is a face to face meeting to iron out this problem (that should not be a problem for you as you seem very eager to that). however, current circumstances render this meeting very unlikely to occur in the near future and even it will, i'm afraid you won't survive it. Hello. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. You may also push the signature button   located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you!

Knoppix/VandalSniper

Hi -- sorry to bother you, I was just wondering if you'd had any more luck with your network problems in Knoppix. Sorry if I was convoluted or tiring in my responses (or insultingly over-simplifying; I've become anal about "keeping it simple, stupid"). Obviously, I'm still stumped on what the exact problem is. I still think it's either an issue of the DHCP server not sending back all the needed info for a good route, or an issue with buggy hacked Linux wireless drivers. (Your router is wireless, right?)
I hope this hasn't completely turned you off to trying out VS, as it really seems pretty handy, if you're still interested. The setup guide on my talk page does work for me, so if you happen to get the networking running, give it a go and let me know how things turn out. Please feel free to try these steps sometime and drop me a line if you have more problems (or feel free not to). Have a good one, and keep up the great countervandalism efforts. -- Omicronpersei8 (talk) 04:31, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

I was wondering if you could help me with a few things

I didn't really know who to ask and you seemed like the right person since you have been here for a while and have made a good deal of contributions. Actually this is quite random, but it seems everytime I sign my posts it says "Creating is harder than deleting" I have no idea why it does this. Can you please help me. I would like it to just say my name or better yet, look like your name when you sign. Could you please help me. Thanks :) Creating a harder than deleting 06:12, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

Good questions. I actually wondered about this for a couple of months when I first came here. You need to go into the "my preferences" menu and select "raw signature". The space above is open for your sig code, using standard wiki markup (that might be, by the way, why your sig says creating is harder than deleting. Anyway, here's my sig:
<span style="color:DarkSlateGray">Alphachimp</span> <span style="color:Black">talk</span>
If you want to have the same sig (I copied it from others, btw), you can just copy that, changing it to:
<span style="color:DarkSlateGray">Valoem</span> <span style="color:Black">talk</span>
I actually followed a tutorial on how to do this. You can find it here. A great list of colors is here. I hope that helps. Feel free to get back to me with any further questions. Alphachimp talk 06:22, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
  • Thanks a lot for your help. I am a bit confused though. Does you sig appear that way when you type ~~~~ or you do have to manually copy and paste that code you sent me? =] Valoem talk
All you have to do is type ~~~~ it'll put in the sig (if you copied it into the sig line and selected raw sig) and the time and date stamp. Now you should change the color scheme =D Alphachimp talk 06:33, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

Eluchil404's RfA

Thank you for taking the time to express an opinion in my recent request for adminship. I have withdrawn my self-nomination because there seemed little prospect for further productive discussion or the formation of a consensus to promote. Many commentators offered constructive critisism that I will use to improve myself as a user. Others suggested that the nomination was premature and that a re-nom in a few months would be more likely to gain consensus. Thank you for your comments in the RfA. I will strive to continue to improve as an editor and address the concerns that you identified.. Eluchil404 20:27, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

Re: Family Name not inportant

Thank you for the removal of the word, NONSENSE. We VELDERS' are a proud family, and WE are ROYALITY dating back to 1207. I am sure that the member of our family has paper proof of this. I was only sent a written letter, in Dutch as to its authenticity. As stated elsewhere, I have been working on my Family tree for over 15 years, and one place where I have spent many an hour each day, for weeks, is the LDS. I have posted post's all over the world seeking our name. Found there are Streets, etc, and plenty of VELDERS.

met a Professor in a university of Holland who had come over to hold a sermester for three day, in Athens Ga, University of Athens, and he brought with him his Family Tree. There is/was so much information that I had gathered on line, so I shall re-enter my family member as a Royal member of our VELDERS' FAMILY.

What gave me the idea was, I was watching a T.V. station this morning, and saw that the reporters name was brought up on the screen, and it gave a little information about her. I feel that Pieter Velders, a desentant or ROYALITY has just as much, if not more reason to be listed.

thank you

Hi again, it seems to me that the last several comments at this AfD should possibly be moved to the talkpage for the article. I wanted to ask you about it because:

  1. that would mean moving a couple of your comments, which I wouldn't do without consulting you, and
  2. I'm not actually sure it's appropriate to move comments out of AfD, even if they do belong elsewhere.

3RR

If I recall correctly, the three-revert rule does not apply to cases of vandalism. At first, this was a content dispute, but various other editors (as well as myself) have demanded the anonymous editor to provide sources for his edits, which he has not; he has not even attempted to discuss the issue. At this point it is simply vandalism. Yesterday he continued to vandalize, even after being warned 4 times. He was then blocked for 3 hours, after which he immediately began vandalizing again. I also submitted the vandalized pages to WP:RFP; my request was denied, with the suggestion to simply revert (see here).

Trust me, I thought about the 3RR before I started reverting, and if anyone blocks me, I will use that RFP response as my justification. 3RR was meant to prevent legitimate edit wars (over content); this is just vandalism. And I cannot be held guilty for making so many reverts if my request for page protection was denied. What am I supposed to do without page protection—let the guy keep vandalizing? --Larry V (talk | contribs) 18:58, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

I'm going to sumbit another request for semi-protection for the affected pages. --Larry V (talk | contribs) 19:03, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
No, I gotcha; I'm going to start following some Wikipedia policy on this one (e.g., request for protection, request for block, etc.) =) --Larry V (talk | contribs) 19:50, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
Actually, check this out: User talk:162.84.213.11. This was the IP he was using yesterday. You'll note that he was given a final warning twice. Not only that, but he got another final warning after his block expired! --Larry V (talk | contribs) 20:02, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Hello Alphachimp I need your help in a matter. UCRGrad is telling other editors who I'm involved with that he has issue with me being in the AMA. I'm currently handling a case for the Mediation Cabal and feel that these actions could derail any progress I could make. Thanks Alphachimp, I hope that the matter will cease. Aeon Insane Ward 23:36, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

NYCS simplebus

I was thinking that you should probably rename NYCS simplebus to something like NYC simplebus. My more complex template, NYCS bus, was never intended for use outside of "Bus connections" sections in articles about NYC subway stations. On the other hand, your template can be very useful to reference bus routes in contexts outside of subway articles; thus, I don't think that it should have "NYCS" in its name. What do you think? --Larry V (talk | contribs) 02:38, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Well, I think it would be just fine to rename it and then let the redirects do their job; I've done it quite often myself with NYCS service templates and such, and it works perfectly. In addition, I find the use of alpha in your signature to be quite clever, and I don't think that the Latin will stop anyone from finding your talk page—although, perhaps, not everyone who goes there will be wanting to praise you. =) --Larry V (talk | contribs) 13:32, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Question

Is it normal for, for example, band pages to have external links to fan-based websites? Or is that not really appropriate? Thanks. Laura June 20:10, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Unless it's a really notable band with a very informative fansite it probably shouldn't. --mboverload@ 20:15, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Bots

Thanks for the explanation. Yes, I understand the usefulness and importance of bots. The reason I wrote that was, as you mentioned, I was finding an inordinate number of bot edits on my watchlist, most of which seemed at first glance to be trivial edits. Though large scale edits and cleanups would be impossible without bots. I'm glad to hear there is an approval process for them. Cheers JPotter 21:29, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Like here's one for instance, in this diff 4 this bot is going around removing the wikilink from the word metamorphosis. Why? It seems unneccessary. People watching that article may want to have that word linked and need to revert it. Not a huge deal in any case, and I appreciate you taking the time to comment on it. Adminship

Hey. I read your userpage and it says you'd like to be an admin someday. I have seen you in AFDs and some RFAs and I think you're overdue for adminship. If it's OK with you, I'd like to nominate you for adminship. What do you think? --Tuspm(C | @) 22:55, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

I know I'm butting in here, but I'd heartily support you, as would many other users, I'm sure! HawkerTyphoon 22:58, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
Don't worry about butting in, I do it all the time.
Thank you both for considering this. I think Yanksox already has dibbs, but I'll bet he'd let you conom if you're interested. I'm going to hold off for the time being, because I'd like to complete my editor review (I think the normal run time is 1 month, so around August 10), and I'd like to strive to improve myself a little bit more as an editor. In the meantime, I sincerely appreciate both of your sentiments. Reading them most definitely made my day =D. Regards, αChimp laudare 23:31, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Subway Infobox

Hey there. I noticed that in the infobox for the 175th Street (IND Eighth Avenue Line) station, under "next south," it identifies the A, but not the C (or the 1, for that matter, but since the 1 is on the IRT B'way line, I wouldn't really expect it). Anyway, being new to the world of templates and such, I don't really see how I can correct this. If you do understand it, could you give me any pointers, etc? Thanks

BTW, I put up a picture for the George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal. Really difficult to find a decent angle from the street level. I'm going to keep my eyes and ears open for someone with a high enough window near the terminal. But I suppose the one I took will have to do for now. -Seidenstud 23:40, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

I don't fully understand your explanation of why the 175th St station's infobox doesn't include the C. When I look at the infobox for the 145th Street (IRT Lenox Avenue Line), where only the 3 train stops, for "next south," it includes the 2 train. What is the difference between the two stops?
Thanks for your nice words about my photos.

the vandalism or not bot

Yeah. Thanks for your sincere and illustrious comments on my page. They are actually appreciated and as far as the nitwit vandal thing..no problem. Most of my irritation was aimed at a nasty, but sort of funny, too, accusation that was placed on my page by a real niiwit, at or around the same time. But, in any case, you gave me a laugh and I sorta always like to do that. As far as the Germans solution of userboxes goes, I don't much give a shit what the Germans think about userboxes. As far as the pres goes, well he's the pres, what can I say? I don't personally agree with him and the controlling nature of his decision, but what I think is not a big deal anyway, so who cares? In the end the new official Wikipedia environmental userbox is more attractive but it doesn't say what I would like it to say. It says, "This user is interested in environmentalism." If I make my own it will say "This user is an environmentalist." Not exactly the same thing. Anyhow, thanks for taking the time to leave considerate and funny comments on my page. Later. our expertise: food museums & food heritage sites

Hi, I have noticed that the subject of food heritage and food-themed museums have not yet been covered in Wikipedia. My wife and I are pioneers in this field. But since original research and thoughts are not welcome...how do worthy topics not previously examined get included? Seems this is a catch 22 situation. Please advise. We are the authors of several books on food history and the directors of The Food Museum and its Global Food Heritage Project....which has been recently profiled in ICOM News....that's Unesco's Council on Museums. We have professional museum credentials, as well, having been guest curators an exhibit at the Smithsonian. Anyway we admire Wikipedia and wanted to see if the worthy subject of museums about eating and food could somehow get included.

Well it's 2 AM on West Coast USA. California, homies. We all surf (even the 8 billion illegal immigrants). Los Angeles is just like they show it in GTA: San Andreas (but with more hookers). Oh yeah, and we only have one season. We call it "perfect".

Anyway, it is RETF Christmas Secular Celebration Day, and I'm not failing to deliver. I'm saying good bye to converting that whole list over. It's full of misspellings that aren't misspellings and words that aren't ever misspelled. From now on this is my method for finding new words:

  1. Spellcheck a random word from the existing list
  2. Open any article where it corrects more than 1 word
  3. Load it into Microsoft Word and spellcheck
  4. See how many times it shows up in Wikipedia using AWB
  5. If it shows up more than 6 times I'll put it into dictionary.com to make sure it's not a real word
  6. Integrate all versions of a word into regular expressions using dictionary.com as a reference
  7. <datagridFAR find="\b(E|e)nvrionmen(t|ts|tal|tally|talist|talists)\b" replacewith="$1nvironmen$2" />

You can do this too and get thanked in the section below! It really works well!

Please explain unexplained declination of speedy delete on Jim Shapiro

Will you please explain why you do not think this meets the definition? It is 100% disparaging, and it is unsourced. What on earth are you two admins thinking? If this does not meet the criteria, what does?jawesq 03:40, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Please point to any part of Jim Shapiro that is not an attack

Really. The entire article is an attack on Shapiro and serves no purpose but to attack Shapiro. He clearly isn't notable. This is the time to exercise speedy deletion.Gfwesq 03:47, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Please give examples as to why Jim Shapiro should not be speedy deleted

The entire purpose of the article is to disparage. There is nothing in the article that is not disparaging. The article is unsourced. Three of us now agree that it meets speedy deletion in every way. As an admin, you should at least explain why it does not meet Speedy Delete criteria. I don't think you can, because it does meet the criteria. To summarily dismiss the tag is not proper. Oops, actually four of us, since one said he believed an article like this was previously deleted. jawesq 03:54, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

According to Wikpedia, negative comments that are unsourced may be deleted without explanation. Since you said I am free to edit it, then I will do so. I don't know this guy, and he doesn't look very appealing. However, I am incensed that gratuitous lawyer bashing like this is tolerated, and actually supported by an admin!

This is what is left in the article, that is not an unsourced, disparaging attack.

Jim Shapiro is a personal injury lawyer in Rochester, New York .

That's all there is that is left, after the Wiki rule is exercised.jawesq 03:59, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Jim Shapiro article wasn't created to attack?

You wrote: "Although the article smacks of POV, it's not entirely created to disparage its subject". What other object was it created for pray tell? Clearly we disagree. There is no point to the article other than a not so subtle attack on its subject and perhaps a not so suble attack on PI lawyers as well. It more than NPOV. In the meantime I believe invoking the Wiki rule of removing unsourced dispraging material without explanation is in order. There won't be much left to the article and perhaps you will see the merit in the contention the sole purpose of the article is an attack.Update: See also this rule "Administrators encountering biographies that are unsourced and negative in tone, where there is no NPOV version to revert to, should delete the article without discussion" At this point, having removed the negative unsourced material, there isn't anything left, meaning an admin could not have reverted it to a NPOV. Every Attorney Should be Incensed

Re: Jim Shapiro

It appears that admins construe the WIki speedy delete rules differently than the plain meaning of the rules would require. That said, I think every attorney on Wikipedia should be incensed at the way this is being handled by admins. I do not know the subject of this article (Jim Shapiro). However, one would have to be blind to see this as anything but gratuitous and unsourced lawyer bashing. There is one sentence in the entire article that is not disparaging. Jim Shapiro is a personal injury lawyer in Rochester, New York.jawesq 04:27, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

I want to escalate this further because of the administrator's conduct on this article. If it is the policy of admins to ignore the rules, then I want no part of WIkipedia - an online encyclopedia that condones gratuitous lawyer bashing.jawesq 04:34, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

The article that was proposed as a CSD attack page read in total:

Jim Shapiro is a personal injury lawyer in Rochester, New York.

I don't see that as an attack.
However, going back into the history, this is presumably the version you object to. The things in this article are stated as factual events and indicative of the career and activities of this individual. If that is so, then it is an accurate article. If these things are made up, then obviously that is a serious matter. If these things are distorted, or exaggerated in the career of an otherwise reputable lawyer, then that also needs to be addressed. It may be a question of putting them into proper perspective. However, you seem outraged simply because anything negative is associated with a lawyer. Wikipedia is here to present the truth, not to do a whitewash. You do not at any time say that these things are untrue, or unrepresentative of this individual. What you do say, quite correctly, is that they are not referenced, and you have removed them, as you are entitled to do. However, if they are properly referenced, then there is no reason why they cannot be reinstated, unless you provide a good reason otherwise. An attack page is when unfair or untrue negative statements are made against an individual. It is not an attack page to show that an individual has done unsavoury things, if that is what an individual has done. I am not making a pronouncement on this particular individual, because I have no knowledge of him. I am just drawing the distinction in principle.
Tyrenius 05:06, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Response to Tyrenius

You wrote: "An attack page is when unfair or untrue negative statements are made against an individual. It is not an attack page to show that an individual has done unsavoury things, if that is what an individual has done." I don't disagree, and I am not so stupid as not to get the point and I wish you would cease treating me as though I were.

I am not asking anyone to whitewash anything. I don't know or want to know the individual in question. Here are the facts: It is a bio that is unsourced and negative in tone. Here is the rule (again)"Administrators encountering biographies that are unsourced and negative in tone, where there is no NPOV version to revert to, should delete the article without discussion". It is very simple to apply the rule to the facts. Does the rule have any meaning or not? From you response, I can see you agree it is negative in tone. From your response, I can see you agree is it lacking sources. There is a disconnect here. But it is not on my end.

You wrote: "However, you seem outraged simply because anything negative is associated with a lawyer. Wikipedia is here to present the truth, not to do a whitewash. You do not at any time say that these things are untrue, or unrepresentative of this individual." First off, I am not outraged that anyting negative is said about a lawyer and it is disengenious of you to say so. I am not particurally outraged in this case. If I were outraged it would be because unsourced negative attacks are allowed to stand in contravention of the stated rule after it has been pointed out.

You wrote: "What you do say, quite correctly, is that they are not referenced, and you have removed them, as you are entitled to do. However, if they are properly referenced, then there is no reason why they cannot be reinstated, unless you provide a good reason otherwise". If it comes back sourced, I will reinstate the WP:NN tag and the Afd. Because even if it is true, he is still not notable. I am know of some case much worse than his (assuming the unsourced facts are ture) which are more notable. (See I can say something negative about lawyers) He is run of the mill. And if my Aunt had... she would be my uncle. But at the moment, the article is unsourced as you point out. It is also negative in tone. And then there is the matter of the Wiki rule. I can do much more than what I have done in pointing out to you the facts. I can draw my own conclusions. Gfwesq 05:43, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

John Lawyer

I just wanted to let you know that my disagreement with you over the lawyer article in no way changes my respect for you or my opinion of your understanding of Wikipedia rules. You're just more conservative than I am, and there's nothing wrong with that. I hope the feelings are mutual =D --mboverload@ 08:00, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Oh yeah, absolutely dude. I always keep votes/csd opinions separate from user opinions. To be quite frank, the only thing that's driving me crazy in this situation is that people are not responding in sequence and responding in the middle of comments. Several of my comments have been divided in half by responses. I'm thinking of going in and fixing it, but I really don't want to be accused of comment modification. But yeah, it's not you bud. I could care less who I'm arguing with. alphaChimp laudare 13:59, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
Go look at AN/I, that guy has just been blocked for 3 days. Thanks for your response =D --mboverload@ 20:14, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
Yeah. I found out about it earlier today. I really didn't see a way to contribute constructively to the dispute, so I avoided it. Thanks for telling me though, mboverload. =) alphaChimp laudare 21:18, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks Alphachimp, I have sent you an e-mail thanks for everything. Æon Insane Ward 06:35, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

My edit count

Thank you, Chimp. I'll try to get it to work again, and if I can't, maybe I can ask you for some help. Many thanks! :-) SlimVirgin (talk) 08:58, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Consider re-reading CSD G4

Hey @C - on articles such as God of War (band), be careful about G4 - it does not apply to previously speedied articles - only where an AfD consensus was previously reached. A repost needs to meet a substantive CSD criterion (A#) in order to be re-deleted. This is a common misunderstanding. Our strong bond shall ne'er be broken... Cheers! - CrazyRussian talk/email 14:28, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Unfortunately even many sysops misunderstand this criterion. Then again, if it was deleted once, chances are it'll go again. Only in this case, on reposting, the guy added a stronger assertion, see the AfD. See ya. - CrazyRussian talk/email 14:33, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Re: Signature Question

Thanks :) In the sig box in preferences, after your actual sig, just enter your customised date/time templates, for example: CURRENTTIME, CURRENTDAY2 CURRENTMONTHNAME CURRENTYEAR. If you do this, remember, you've got to get into the habit of signing with three ~'s only. — FireFox (talk) 14:58, 30 July '06

I got used to it after a while. The worst that can happen is that you end up with 2 timestamps if you forget. And yeah, your sig is nice, I like it :) — FireFox (talk) 15:02, 30 July '06

Thank you

Thanks so much for my barnstar. I appreciate it and will shamelessly list it on my user page.

I still want to help you get things up and going with VS, if you're still interested, so if you ever want to fling some Knoppix error logs or debug messages at me (and size is not a concern), I'd be happy to take a look at them and try to figure out a good response to give. I hate to cast out uninformed guesses about what the problem is, and I know how unhelpful they can be. Sorry to harp on the subject, but I don't want to look like I've given up on helping either.

And thanks for helping out with the CIA link thing yesterday. If anyone deserves another barnstar, it's you. I've actually been thinking about writing a simple script or two to give some bot aid to the project, but I'll have to figure out a reasonable use for one first.

Thanks again; hope to work with you again in the near future!

64.12.117.8

Greetings. It looks as if 64.12.117.8 has somehow found a way to circumvent his editing block, and has been posting grossly inappropriate (and unsigned) personal attacks in userpages this afternoon. See here (juvenile "ha ha, you're gay" type comment on my userpage), here and here (repeated vandalism within a few minutes) and here (in which he explicitly threatens vandalism...a few minutes before he carried it out the first and second times on ApolloBoy's userpage). Can a more robust block be placed on this individual's abilities to disrupt Wikipedia? Scheinwerfermann 18:02, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Oy. Just when I thought my opinion of AOL couldn't get any dimmer. Thanks (...I think...!) for the explanation. Scheinwerfermann 18:11, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

message

Per your message, I have not, nor do I plan to vandalize any of your pages. If someone is using my I.P. address without my knowledge, and you know who they are, please let me know.

I do know that in the past someone has tried to tunnel my system.

Best,
