How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Happy new year, in friendship! - Thank you for still being around! - One of my pics is on the Main page, DYK? - In this young year, I enjoyed meetings with friends in real life, and wish you many of those. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:48, 6 January 2022 (UTC)

from snow to surf - and only late today I discovered that OTD has an article I created ten years ago, Guido Dessauer, ten years and remembered --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:19, 13 January 2022 (UTC)

2022 began happily with vacation. I uploaded images but stopped at 22 January - click on songs. 30 January means 10 years of Precious. It's also the birthday of a friend, - I'm so happy I mentioned his DYK on his 90th birthday when he was still alive. I have a great singer on DYK whom I heard, Elena Guseva, and wait for a Recent death appearance of Georg Christoph Biller whom I saw in action. - And you? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:58, 30 January 2022 (UTC)

update: we have now Guseva pictured, Biller pictured better (but still not on the Main page), and one more day of my pics --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:09, 31 January 2022 (UTC)

  • Hi there. Lovely to hear from you :) Sadly, I've lots going on right now as Peter's Mom and Dad both passed over the last month. I've been travelling back and forth to Pennsylvania since December - hence keeping a low profile here. Keep up the good work - I'll be back soon as can be :) - Alison 17:28, 1 February 2022 (UTC)

Anatoliy Fedoruk (or Anatoly Fedoruk?)

Hallo Alison, Is the missing "i" in his name in the lead a typo, or a variant transliteration? I've made redirects from all three possible other versions of his name (with and without Petrovich, and that "i").

Please remember to add at least one source to every article you start but most importantly for anything on a living person. Techically this stub would qualify for BLPPROD as it has no sources: I reckoned a link to the Ukrainian version would save it from that fate, but someone else might be more ruthless. Just one good source, at least. Thanks. PamD 06:22, 4 April 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for the reality check!

I think you're right about the image. While my intentions might have been good, it's not worth the risk, is it? I've pulled it, and I really doubt anyone's going to overrule the person who restored it. Article can stand; I have a historian friend who specialises in this who is very glad to have access to it, but that's different, isn't it? DYK?

Hi Alison - long time etc. A factoid popped up in the article about Drumlish. It explains the origin of the name Baltimore. It might make a DYK piece - but I've no idea how to submit it. Or maybe it isn't interesting! Sarah777 (talk) 11:48, 26 July 2022 (UTC)

Cathal Ó Searcaigh

I understand your reasoning in reintroducing references to a 15-year-old controversy; certainly they are a matter of public record. I've had discussions back and forth with editors and have reverted vandalism from anonymous editors on this issue for the last few years. Here are my 2 main rationales for reducing the amount of importance given to the Kathmandu controversy in this biographical article.

1. It's something that happened long ago, that is no longer at the forefront of public discussion, and that ultimately led to no very satisfactory outcome for either side. So in an article that takes a broad look at the poet's life, it must be mentioned of course, but not overemphasised; and it's hard or impossible to find brief references which nicely balance the positive and negative arguments. A couple of references don't do justice to the complexity of the issues, so better to have none in my opinion (-but see point 2).

2. The separate Wikipedia article on the Fairytale of Kathmandu tries to do just that: it is more comprehensively referenced and tries to give a fair and balanced account of the arguments on each side. That article is referenced with a hyperlink in (all) my edit(s). Dmhball~enwiki (talk) 09:54, 12 August 2022 (UTC)

It fails to do the latter, though, doesn't it? The 'defence' section is almost exactly twice as long as the 'criticisms' section, and the 'legality' section is also in breach of WP:NPOV. That article should probably be merged back into the biography article. BastunĖġáḍβáś₮ŭŃ! 16:50, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
I don't think you really mean that Bastun! It would overbalance the whole biographical article. But if there really is more material for the 'prosecution', albeit that the Irish police, the Nepali police and Interpol have all failed to find evidence of any crime having been committed, then I'd have no objection to it being added to the Kathmandu article. I would also be interested to see a proposal for reducing the 'defence' section. I think I'm right in saying that some of the article has material which is rather ambiguous, and which arguably could be moved into a third 'neutral' section, which might change the balance. However, at the heel of the hunt I would oppose anything which to my mind over-represents the relevance of the Fairytale of Kathmandu events within an account of this major poet's life and work. Dmhball~enwiki (talk) 22:13, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
Your statement above is a perfect example of the problems with the article: the Irish police, the Nepali police and Interpol have all failed to find evidence of any crime having been committed... How do you know that? We don't know that the Gardaí or Nepali police failed to find evidence, all we know is that no prosecution was brought. This kind of assertion is problematic, and the article is rife with them. BastunĖġáḍβáś₮ŭŃ! 23:10, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
I'm sure you're right Bastun, but don't blame me for the Fairytale of Kathmandu article, I'm not responsible for it. I can see that it could do with some improvement, but it serves a purpose as far as I'm concerned. Please edit the Kathmandu article yourself if you can, or find somebody who can do the job. You've identified problems, and I'm sorry but I can't cure them. Dmhball~enwiki (talk) 23:37, 12 August 2022 (UTC)

Dmhball has been warned that he should not be involved in editing the Cathal O'Searcaigh page due to conflict of interest (he is a friend of the subject - see edit history). Also insists on calling the Nepalese boys 'men'.... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 37.228.200.147 (talk) 20:52, 24 September 2022 (UTC)

Hi, just an fyi, the messagebox on his user page doesn't render. Might be an issue with my browser, but might just wanna take a look at it. Cheers. X-750 List of articles I have screwed over 20:15, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

Greg Abbott

Thank you for fixing my screw-up. I never intended to delete the article, just the redirect, and I'm still not sure where I went wrong. I tried to restore it, but as you know, the system can't handle restoring that much history. Based on your edit summary, I assume you'll get back the entire history later. Again, my apologies.--Bbb23 (talk) 16:01, 29 September 2022 (UTC)

  • No worries - I got the page back live again and move-prot'd it for now. I may need to bring it to ANI as it may need dev intervention. Or we restore it in sections of 100, which is going to be paaaaain. Either way, we're out of imminent trouble, as the page itself is live again - Alison talk 16:07, 29 September 2022 (UTC)
  • Phew - got it! All good now :) - Alison talk 16:09, 29 September 2022 (UTC)

IP block exemption

Hi Alison. The IP address at school was recently banned because User:DA9523 checklogs showed that he was abusing several accounts, resulting in the IP address getting banned, and every time he goes on Wikipedia, the IP gets banned again. I was wondering if I could not be affected by this IP ban. I promise I will NOT abuse this privelage, as I have made many several significant contributions to Wikipedia, and the last thing I would want to do is harm Wikipedia in any way shape or form. My editing time is mostly at school, so it would be very useful if I could edit at home and at school. Thank you, Matthew. MasterMatt12 (talk) 16:05, 14 December 2022 (UTC)

Your draft article, Draft:Intersex rights in the Republic of Ireland

Hello, Alison. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Intersex rights in the Republic of Ireland".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been deleted. If you plan on working on it further and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. Liz Read! Talk! 20:17, 19 October 2022 (UTC)

Hello, Alison,
It always feels odd when Twinkle leaves these messages on the talk pages of long-time editors/admins. Of course, if you want to return to working on this article, you can restore it yourself. It looked interesting! Thanks. Liz Read! Talk! 20:19, 19 October 2022 (UTC)

Alison, I restored it since I figured you might have been busy with something else. I was going to bring it up to GA status, but unfortunately I don't have my copy of the Encyclopedia of Everything here in the kitchen with me. Oh, gotta run! Drmies (talk) 20:21, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
