No barnstar

edit

I don't really do barnstar awards but I would like you to know that your efforts are appreciated. You are working in one of the more fraught topic areas and you are generally doing a very good job of it. We don't always agree and I am sure that will continue to be the case but it is all about attitude. And you have the right attitude in spades. Well done. - Sitush (talk) 01:28, 9 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Sitush, Thanks so much for this message - it is very encouraging and I really appreciate it. But honestly, I wish I had your attitude, your command over English as well as your patience. I was reading your argument with someone here Talk:Raju#'Raju'_is_synonymous_with_'Kshatriya' and really admired how you approached it - your patience to go through every source and tolerating all the unnecessary name calling that he/she was engaging in. Frankly, I would not have been able to handle it so well. Also, hope you are doing and recovering well - you had mentioned a surgical procedure on your talk page some time back . Regarding a article

edit

Hi Acharya63, something wrong is happening on the page that you maintained integrity - Maharashtrian Brahmin

AR767 (talk) 16:40 Saturday, 6 October 2018 (UTC)

Hi AR767, it would have been better if that page had been named "Marathi Brahmin" to indicate Marathi speaking Brahmins instead of Maharashtrian. Probably it should be renamed to Marathi Brahmin to avoid confusion? Not sure if the other editors would agree though. Thanks Acharya63 (talk) 22:52, 6 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Yes, that's better. AR767 (talk) 7:38 Sunday, 7 October 2018 (UTC)

Nana Patekar

edit

Hi Acharya, hope you are doing well. Just to know you Nana Patekar was not born in Maratha caste. He is from Bhandari community (caste) which comes under OBC category whereas Maratha caste comes under Open category here in Maharashtra. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sainath468 (talkcontribs) 07:14, 7 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi Sainath468, Please read his interview. He says he is maratha. Do you have another citation for his caste? Thansk Acharya63 (talk) 07:17, 7 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi, that doesn't mean he was born in Maratha family. Maratha in general means Mavala (warrior) of Shivaji. In Shivaji's army there were lot of other caste people (अठरा पगड जातीचे लोक) more than 96 kuli Maratha, everyone was called as Maratha. I haven't any proof from Nana Patekar to show you he belongs to Bhandari caste, but I have seen Balasaheb Thackeray's speech in Dasara melava where he mentioned about Bhandari caste and Nana Patekar. Morever I have seen Akhil Bhartiya Bhandari caste head meeting him in personal with their agenda. Again that is not a valid reference. I think Nana Patekar don't believe in caste system as well so better to not mention about his caste. Read this article- https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/entertainment/hindi/bollywood/news/Nana-Patekar-Remove-column-of-cast-and-religion-I-dont-believe-in-religion/articleshow/50947956.cms — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sainath468 (talkcontribs) 07:29, 7 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

This website also mentions him as a maratha https://www.marathamatrimony.com/articles/trivia.php. Anyway, we can discuss on talk page. Could it be that Mr.Thackeray was referring to the help provided by Patekar to this community?

Yes Balasaheb Thackeray clearly mentioned about his community. Watch this interview - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfCnnRRVuPU Can you read following article if you know Marathi? Tarun Bharat is well known Marathi news paper. https://www.tarunbharat.com/news/578531 http://www.sarkarnama.in/marathi-political-news-bjp-konkan-nana-patekar-22821 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sainath468 (talkcontribs) 07:47, 7 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

OK, it looks like he is a Bhandari. Not sure why he misrepresented his caste or maybe the interviewer misunderstood. In any case, we cannot add his caste now because those citations are not self identifications. We also need to remove him from List of Maratha people. Thanks Acharya63 (talk) 08:11, 7 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

An article you recently created, Uttaranarayana Anuvaka, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. Brahmin percent in Mahatashtra

edit

Hi Acharya63, why did you change the Brahmin percentage in Maratha MRRaja001 (talk) 09:47, 25 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi MRRaja001 , I have not removed the value(10%) you added. I kept both values shown by both sources. In wikipedia, Christophe Jaffrelot is considered a very reliable source. I think what it means is that the population was initially low in Maharashtra but due to migration it is probably close to 10%. As per WP:RS, the academic source( by Vora and Jaffrelot) is considered much more superior to newspaper sources as we generally do not know the background of the person who wrote the newspaper article. Secondly, academic articles are peer reviewed whereas newspapers could be opinion pieces. Please see Reliable_sources#Some_types_of_sources for this discussion. Wikipedia generally relies on scholarly sources but newspaper sources are OK too. If you do not agree with the change, we can discuss here and use proper wording for the statements. I am OK if you want to change it to 10% although I have mentioned this number already on that page. Thanks Acharya63 (talk) 10:11, 25 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
But this reference is saying that in 1963 itself the population of Brahmins in Maharashtra is 8%. "The Brahmin who form about 8% of the population of Maharashtra" - (Book: Irawati Karmarkar Karve; Yashwant Bhaskar Damle, Group relations in village community, Deccan College Post-graduate and Research Institute, p. 9) . MRRaja001 (talk) 10:18, 25 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
The difference is because of the years. I will update it to 10%. Thanks Acharya63 (talk) 10:24, 25 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Again Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute, published a book in 2007 with the updates of population. (Book:Anthropology for archaeology: proceedings of the Professor Irawati Karve Birth Centenary Seminar. Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute. 2007. p. 158. While comprising only 9% of the Maharashtrian population, the eight endogamous Brahmin castes studied by Karve and Malhotra). MRRaja001 (talk) 10:38, 25 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I agree with you. I think that 4% is some old value. Hence I have updated the Maratha page to show that the modern value is 10%. Acharya63 (talk) 10:44, 25 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Great! I'm glad we could figure this out. :) - MRRaja001 (talk) 10:46, 25 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Are we talking about Maharashtrian brahmins being 10% of the state's population or the number also includes brahmins immigrant resident in Maharashtra? Thanks.Jonathansammy (talk) 13:52, 25 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hi Jonathansammy, the reference says about only Maharashtrian Brahmins, and doesn't include brahmins immigrant resident. MRRaja001 (talk) 18:09, 25 March 2019
Hi MRRaja001, does the reference explicitly say that Maharashtrian brahmin form 10% of the population of the state of Maharashtra or is it 10% of the Marathi speaking population of the state? Thanks.Jonathansammy (talk) 20:27, 25 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hi Jonathansammy, The quote is "While comprising only 9% of the Maharashtrian population, the eight endogamous Brahmin castes studied by Karve and Malhotra)". It does mean the Maharashtrian Brahmin population (not only Marathi). MRRaja001 (talk) 17:30, 29 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hi MRRaja001, I am confused. Maharashtrian brahmin is synonymous with Marathi brahmin and Maharashtrian is synonymous with Marathi people , and not all residents of the state of Maharashtra.Thanks.Jonathansammy (talk) 18:41, 29 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hi Jonathansammy, "The eight endogamous Brahmin castes" means Deshastha (Rigvedi,Shukla Yajurvedi, Madhyandina, Kanva) Chitpavan, Karhade, Saraswat, Devrukhe Brahmins. Previously Rigvedi,Shukla Yajurvedi, Madhyandina, Kanva were all calculated separately and they used to maintain endogamy but now the intermarriages are quite common. So this does mean that the 9% Brahmins mentioned in the academic research book are Maharashtrian Brahmins. MRRaja001 (talk) 11:12, 17 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
MRRaja001, 9% brahmin population of Maharashtra would mean about 12-13% of Maharashtrian brahmins in total Marathi speaking population.I have not come across any serious academic source which indicates the Maharashtrian brahmin population being that high.If you have a source then please include it in the article.Thanks.Jonathansammy (talk) 13:53, 17 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
MRRaja001 Let us continue this discussion on the talk page of the article rather than on User Acharya's talk page.I am copy /pasting the thread on the article page. Thanks.Jonathansammy (talk) 13:53, 17 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Creation of an article

edit

Hi Acharya63, can we create a page saying "List of Notable Maharashtrian Brahmins". MRRaja001 (talk) 03:14, 30 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi MRRaja001 , we already have the lists under each Brahmin page - like Deshastha , Koknastha etc. Probably we can add a section to the Maharashtrian Brahmin page (instead of creating a new page) and point it to the other pages. My view is to avoid duplicating data if possible because it is hard to maintain multiple copies and one of them can quickly go out of sync. we already have a List_of_Brahmins#See_also and I recently added Chitpawan, Deshastha and Karhade to it. Thanks Acharya63 (talk) 21:49, 5 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
Yeah! you are right i agree with you.MRRaja001 (talk) 1:00, 6 April 2019 (UTC)

Deshastha Bramhin

edit

Hi Acharya63, I think this is not published by Popular Prakashan https://books.google.co.in/books?id=VBQwAQAAIAAJ MRRaja001 (talk) 01:50, 6 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Regarding a reference MRRaja001 (talk) 01:57, 6 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi MRRaja001, you may be right about the publisher. I incorrectly wrote Popular Prakashan in the comment when I edited the Deshastha Brahmin page. However, the real problem with that source is that it is the State series. It says "People of India :Karnataka". Sitush said that the people of India (state series only) is not reliable because it plagiarizes British era sources but the "People of India" published by Oxford University Press is fine. You can see Sitush's comment here=>Talk:Deshastha_Brahmin/Archive_2#People_of_India. I have access to the Oxford series in the University library here and can try to see if I can find references for that statement the next time I visit. Thanks Acharya63 (talk) 03:06, 6 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
Yeah! Sure. MRRaja001 (talk) 03:11, 6 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Acharya63, is it necessary to write Deshastha Brahmins as Debra's and Konkanastha Brahmins as Kobras. Please remove it. MRRaja001 (talk) 04:11, 7 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi MRRaja001, I have removed it. It is not necessary and does not add any value to wikipedia. Personally, I do not find it offensive - it was very common in marathi brahmin circles in Pune (amongst friends) to ask if a person was a Debra or Kobra. But anyways, I removed it as it is not necessary. Thanks Acharya63 (talk) 00:50, 8 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

But considering superior to other cannot be used if so many caste can claim superior based on shastra basis but wiki cannot entertain such statement. Joshi punekar (talk) 19:37, 14 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Joshi punekar, it is not out of context or fringe opinion. Several sources support that the Deshastha are the original brahmin community of Maharashtra. Also, the "superior opinion" is just an "opinion". Here is what the source says (and there are multiple sources that support it)-"As the original Brahmin inhabitants of Maharashtra they[Deshastha] were held in greatest esteem and considered themselves superior to other Brahmins".[1].Thanks Acharya63 (talk) 06:29, 15 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Acharya63Like this I can show lot of sources teaming citpavans and saraswats as superior. But as per neutrality we don’t place that. thanks Joshi punekar (talk) 11:07, 15 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

I have clearly mentioned nor genetic nor racist nor mythology,it’s general research by gurve ,if possible go through the citation. Joshi punekar (talk) 19:41, 14 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Take time and go through the reference then come to conclusion weather it is genetic or not . Joshi punekar (talk) 19:47, 14 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Joshi punekar , we can discuss this on the talk page of Maharashtrian Brahmin. Thanks Acharya63 (talk) 05:25, 15 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

I have already given clarification in talk page.Citation clearly tells it’s not racism nor genetics .I hope you went through talk page. Joshi punekar (talk) 18:43, 20 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Joshi punekar, according to the opinions of other users it is closely related to genetics and racist. Please see the Deshastha Brahmin talk page. Thanks Acharya63 (talk) 20:55, 20 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Regarding a doubt

edit

Hi Acharya63, I have a doubt can I use this book as reference to create any article. Even though it's published by Oxford University Press - the year was 1925, which is before Independence. MRRaja001 (talk) 10:56, 27 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi MRRaja001, I personally do not have strong opinions on Raj era sources but other senior editors do not allow any "subjective opinions" based on Raj era sources. Is there something specific you needed to add? Can you find equivalent information in modern sources? At one point there were a lot of Raj era sources on the Deshastha Brahmin page. Then some senior editors removed them. Thanks Acharya63 (talk) 16:29, 27 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
Ok. Actually I started writing article of Sakharam Bapu Bokil. I found some information regarding him in that book, So I asked. I'll search for modern sources. Will you do me a favour. Can you help me in finding out dates (DOB & DOD) and place of birth and place of death of him. MRRaja001 (talk) 16:48, 27 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hi MRRaja001, sure. I will try to find more information about him. By any chance do you know the name of the book that might have it(I have access to some great university libraries and might be able to get it)? Also, I think non-controversial information like DOB etc. might be Ok to source from Raj era historians like Parasnis. I am not sure what other editors think of this. Acharya63 (talk) 01:31, 30 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hi MRRaja001, if you look at the Samarth Ramdas page, you will notice that the D.B.Parasnis has been sourced. So I think it would be Ok to use this book as long at it is only for historical events/biographies. Thanks Acharya63 (talk) 04:33, 2 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Okay, Thanks for the info Acharya63 MRRaja001 (talk) 05:10, 10 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Saraswat Brahmin recent edits

edit

Would you kindly take a look at the recent edits in the article including this new one by Acchut Sharma. I haven't checked those but I feel some original researches might be there and it requires copy-editing atleast. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 12:25, 8 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Dear Fylindfotberserk, I think you are right in assuming that it is WP:OR. I did not study about the Saraswat community in my study about the Gramanyas in Maharashtra hence I avoid editing that page. We can talk to WBG and ask him to look at it as he might be more knowledgeable. Thanks Acharya63 (talk) 18:10, 9 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Shibani Dandekar, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Maharashtrian (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Your deletion of RS-supported fact

edit

Your deletion here of RS-supported fact is not proper. https://en.wiki.x.io/w/index.php?title=Joshi&diff=next&oldid=911457223

She is in fact notable for her suicide. If you look at the RS coverage of her, it is largely about her suicide. That is how we determine what is notable in a person's biography. Not by one editor's subjective preference. --2604:2000:E010:1100:803B:A5E6:BBE8:39D5 (talk) 02:21, 19 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Maratha Caste Page

edit

I would like you to know that I am not the same individual as the one operating the novice User profile Sanskritputra. Please refer to the discussion panel opened up in the talk page of Maratha caste page before reverting my edits due to needless vandalism by activities of this user. 115.96.147.106 (talk) 05:17, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Yes, you are a user from Mumbai. Please create account so it will be easier to communicate with you. Also, you cannot delet sourced content.

I will make an account soon sir/ma'am, thank you. The sourced content deleted was based on the reliability of the source as inferior to the newer content with a source considered more reliable, however I have restored it. 115.96.147.106 (talk) 05:48, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hello, this is my new account The Storm Nimbus (talk) 05:52, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

The term Maratha has not even existed historically. Most sources agree the Marathas were simple a group of people (and by virtue of the term "people" yes castes) residing in the region now known as Maharashtra. Assuming that every single person from a certain time frame living in a certain region is a "agricultural peasant" is hilarious to say the least. [1] Alfredo722 (talk) 02:34, 6 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi Alfredo722 , please see the quotes from the citations. They were definitely not all yeomen (landowners) as you say. The sources say they were a mix of peasants(kunbi), lohar(ironsmith), dhangar, etc. However, the latter two were probably left out as they are a bit offensive and hence agricultural castes is a closely related term. This is not my personal opinion . Acharya63 (talk) 03:16, 6 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

The North Indian Chtiragupt Kayastha of upper provinces, benaras and bihar as a sub groups of the umbrella Kayastha, caste of scribes of India.

edit

I saw your recent edits to Kayastha. I understand that you mean well but are from Maharastra and not very well aware of North Indian caste system which is the cradle of Hinduism. Since I understand that you are a learned person hence I am sharing this information along with references. I hope you will take the pains to go through them and satisfy yourself.

 The Sanskrit dictionary at Hindunet.org defines Kayastha as follows: ka_yastha, ka_yata a man belonging to the writer-caste; a tribe of bra_hman.as whose employment is writing (Ka.)(Ka.lex.)[6]

 BRAHMINS by vedah.net [2] is an arcticle on who the brahmins are and the various sub-groups of Brahmins. The Kayastha Brahmins are mentioned at sl.no. 15 (in alphabetic order).

 The Brahmins : A List of Brahmin Communities is an extensive list prepared by Kamat.com [3] of all Brahmin communities in India. Kayastha Brahmins are mentioned (in alphabetic order).

 Vyoma Samhita quoted in Shabda−Kalpadrum says: The Kayasthas have sprung from the kaya or body of Lord Brahma. They are similar in rank to Brahmans.

The major differences between this ministerial class and the proper priestly class, started around 1500 years ago in the Kingdom of Kashmir, where each accused the other of misusing their power.
