The Beijing International Short Film Festival (BISFF) 北京国际短片联展 is an annual event in China that showcases a wide range of short films from around the world. It includes both competitive and non-competitive sections, offering filmmakers an opportunity to explore various genres and innovative storytelling techniques. The festival promotes inclusivity, encouraging both emerging and established talents. Held over ten days, BISFF features thematic programs, tributes to historical filmmakers, and experimental screenings, contributing to meaningful dialogues on cinema and contemporary art.

The Beijing International Short Film Festival is usually held annually from late November to early December. During this period, film competitions, short film screenings, panels, and other activities take place simultaneously. The festival is divided into competition sections such as the International Competition, Chinese Language Competition, and Nova Competition, as well as non-competition sections like Echo, Astro, and Neutron.[1]

  • International Competition: Open to short films from around the world (excluding mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan), aiming to discover the latest outstanding short films globally and encourage diversity in visual works.
  • Chinese Language Competition: Showcases films that meet at least one of the following conditions: the primary production country is mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, or Taiwan; the main language is Chinese; the director is of Chinese nationality.
  • Nova Competition: A themed competition focusing on "Growth," showcasing short films under this theme regardless of country and language.

The non-competition sections include:

  • Echo: An archival film section that reviews and presents the development of visual works, paying special tribute to outstanding authors and groups in the history of cinema. This section also screens newly discovered and restored early films, exploring non-traditional methods of visual representation and contextual discussions.
  • Astro: A focus section on filmmakers, specially presenting works of specific image authors or creative groups. It is designed for visual creators active in contemporary filmmaking with significant artistic achievements and inspirational contributions, aiming to outline their aesthetic journey and create an academic discussion space.
  • Neutron: A special screening section for medium-length films, showcasing outstanding works ranging from 46 to 75 minutes in length. There are no restrictions on country, language, subject matter, or genre. This section aims to present the latest achievements in medium-length filmmaking worldwide.
  • Other Special Screening Sections: These have different requirements regarding film length and classification;
