Dear Stefan2, I have read the Wikipedia image policy. The above mentioned page is of my college, and I am very confident that the uploaded image/logo is the sole property of jalpaiguri government engineering college. Since, this is the official wiki page of the college, I am very confident that the college would not have any problem using it here. Regarding the copyright issue: the image does not have any formal highlighted copyright of the logo on its website. As a student it is very tough to gain a permission from the authority, and surely the college authority will never interfere in its use in Wikipedia, wherein it has been allowing various sites to use its logo as a fair use image. Thanks for partipating Wikipedia Asian Month last year, and I hope you enjoy it. Last year, more than 7,000 articles contribute to Wikipedia in 43 languages in Wikipedia Asian Month, making us one of the largest event on Wikipedia. We will organize this event again in upcoming November, and would like to invite you join us again.

August GOCE newsletter

Hello and welcome to the August 2018 GOCE newsletter. Thanks to everyone who participated in the Guild's June election; your new and returning coordinators are listed below. The next election will occur in December 2018; all Wikipedia editors in good standing may take part.

 

Our June blitz focused on Requests and articles tagged for copy edit in October 2017. Of the eleven people who signed up, eight editors recorded a total of 28 copy edits, including 3 articles of more than 10,000 words. Complete results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the July drive. Of the seventeen people who signed up, thirteen editors completed 194 copy edits, successfully removing all articles tagged in the last three months of 2017. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are here.

Please note that CSD criteria A7 does not concern itself with notabilitly but rather with whether the subject is plausibly significant. Any elected representative of a state or national legislature is going to be significant. In fact, they are also considered to be inherently notable, so even if you had not mentioned the notability thing when you nominated C. Anbarasan, it should not have been deleted. October GOCE blitz

Hi Suman chowdhury 22! Thanks for your interest in copy editing! I have a few notes about the October copy-editing blitz:

First, we generally only claim one article to copy edit at a time. That's fair to the other editors participating in the blitz. Copy editing requires focus and attention to detail, so it isn't really advisable to work on multiple copy edits at the same time.

I also feel that I should mention that many of the articles on the Requests page have been nominated for good or featured article status and have high expectations for the quality of their prose. You might want to stick to stub, start and C-class articles until you get a little more experience copy editing to Wikipedia's style guidelines.

  • Gabriel Báthory – you did make some good changes to the article, but it is anticipated to be a good article nominee (GAN) and requires a more-thorough copy edit.
  • Nemanja Todorović Štiplija – this request didn't mention any review process, but I feel it could also use a little more attention.
  • Malaspina family – this article has some issues and I'd recommend a more-experienced editor to handle it.
  • Deep Space Homer – this article is a featured article candidate after failing twice, and needs an expert copy editor.
  • Talvar (film) and Battle of Sufiyan are aiming for GAN.

You may instead want to look at the blitz article list of tagged articles, which tend to be of lower quality and are a good place for most editors to start and gain experience with copy editing.

You may also find it useful to look at the files linked at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Guild_of_Copy_Editors/How_to, which includes a lot of useful information for writing and copy editing at Wikipedia.

This is my first Blitz, so honestly, I was quite confused regarding the regulations. Though this should not be the excuse for my carelessness. I am really thankful to you Reidgreg, for your guidance. To be honest, I found the article Malaspina family to be quite awkward for my level of understanding. Regarding Nemanja Todorović Štiplija, VuXman wrote- "Can you please copy edit this article. He is one of the famous social activist of Serbia." on 12 October 2018. Could you kindly tell me if the article will be accepted as a valid entry? It's not a problem. It's my job to keep an eye open and guide new participants to the GOCE. I would honestly hesitate to copy edit Malaspina family. I've worked on smaller articles about surnames, but as articles get longer the complications can increase exponentially. That's another reason why it's probably better to start with smaller lower-rated articles.
All of those articles above are valid for this blitz (they are among the "target" or "theme" articles for the blitz). What I meant with Nemanja Todorović Štiplija is that the requester didn't state a purpose. i.e., the article is not specifically up for good or featured article review, did you know, etc. So it might only need a C- or B-class copy edit. Nonetheless, I felt that the article could use a little more work in its copy edit.
I would advise doing more work on Nemanja Todorović Štiplija. Gabriel Báthory also needs more work (in my opinion), but I feel it's better for you to keep working on the lower-class copy edit. After you go through that article again, feel free to request a review of your copy edit (from me or on the blitz talk page) and one of the coordinators can give you some specific feedback. – Reidgreg (talk) 16:07, 15 October 2018 (UTC)
Hi Reidgreg, I have a doubt and I hope you can help me out. Should we remove the copyedit tag before editing the target article or after fully completing the work? You're right, you should remove the {{copy edit}} tag when you begin copy editing to avoid edit conflicts. Alternatively to removing it, I will often comment it out like this: <!--{{copy edit|date=October 2018}}-->. But be careful to also list it on your articles on the GOCE Blitz page as {{working}} at the same time. That way, just in case you get busy and can't finish it, one of the co-ordinators will see the working line and know to follow-up. You can similarly use the {{working}} template for articles on the Requests page. – Reidgreg (talk) 18:05, 16 October 2018 (UTC) Oh, the above is meant to avoid edit conflicts with other copy editors. To avoid edit conflicts in general, you could also place {{GOCE in use}} at the top of the article. That way regular editors will see you're working on it. Thanks for the barnstar! I will try to give you some specific feedback on your copy edits from last week. Please take this in at your leisure. You can also check the diffs on the articles for my minor changes (some of the changes I make are cleanup and I wouldn't expect you to do them as part of a copy edit).

Jabalpur: I think you did a good job on this one. I'm just going to mention a few little things.

  • I like where you tightened up a lot of occurrences of reigns like (reigned 915 to 945)(r. 915–945). But in the same way that we should expand acronyms on first use, ideally we should also try to make sure the reader knows what the r. means. I usually use this template: {{abbr|r.|reigned}} which produces r.. If you hover your mouse cursor over the dotted underline, a little box should appear showing a note with the expanded word. You can do the same thing with c. and other abbreviations, particularly where the abbreviation is a single letter and may confuse some readers. Like acronym expansions, this is only needed for the first occurrence in the article.
  • who was the Prime Minister to Rani Durgavati The MOS does not recommend capitalizing job titles unless they are directly attached to the person's name (MOS:JOBTITLE).
  • Given that the article is written for a world audience, I'm not sure it's good to pipe Indian National Congress as Congress, particularly on its first mention in the article. So I put that first mention in full. Later mentions in the paragraph I left as Congress (which the reader can assume through ellipsis) though it could also use the acronym INC.
  • Pick either SI metric or imperial units for an article and stick with that as the primary measurement system throughout. (For articles about India, metric is generally preferred.)

Bhanpura: You did a good job making some of the long sections more concise. A few notes:

  • Hyphens are used for conjunction (association) while dashes are used for disjunction (separation). So with numeric ranges, a dash is used: 4th-5th century4th–5th century. The exception is when the range is preceded with from which requires to as a separator. (MOS:NUMRANGE)
  • It's okay to use local units and numbering systems in an article, but for an international readership we should try to also give systems more broadly used in English-speaking countries. So 2 to 5 lakh years old2 to 5 lakh (200,000–500,000) years old. A lot of people are unfamiliar with lakh and crore.
  • You don't have to have "year" in the year 1992 or the age of 35 years when the reader can assume this from context. 1992 and the age of 35 is fine.
  • Since the Demographics section gives figures for a specific date in the past (when the census was taken), past tense should be used for all the figures which are not be expected to be current.
  • An earlier editor used depicted a lot where they should have used displayed or similar. A subject is depicted in an artwork which is on display in the museum.
  • This is extra work I did: When numbers and units were given, I put them in a {{convert}} template to show both SI metric and imperial units. Convert is a very useful and versatile template, but it takes a bit to learn all of its syntax. (Follow the link for documentation.)

Secunderabad: You made some good improvements to this one. It needs some updating and possibly has some promotional content (unsourced "popular neighbourhoods") so I wouldn't expect going too far with a copy edit while those issues persist.

  • When there's a string of adjectives before a noun, we generally hyphenate these compound modifiers for clarity, so "fifth-largest metropolis in India", "present-day Hyderabad", "medium-distance transport", "government-owned services". Exceptions are with adjectives ending in -ly, proper nouns, and if there are other clarity issues.

  • Although with short articles it may seem repetitive to repeat information from the lead in the next section, the body of the article should make sense even if a reader skipped the lead. So we begin with the subject's name instead of "He". His common name is alright, typically first and last names.
  • MOS:SURNAME says to refer to the subject by their surname after first mention, but here I'm not sure if his proper surname is Todorović or Štiplija. I've left a note on the requester's talk page.

What I take interest in, is my choice. Currently, I am pursuing a fight against Vandalism. At first, I thought your edits were a mistake, so I just performed a Rollback. But, after your subsequent reverts, I think your edits are infact a case of Vandalism. Also - your repeated use of rollback on me is a blatant abuse of privilege. If you do it one more time, then I will request that your rollbacker rights be revoked. (talk page stalker) Just a note from an outside observer, the actual WP:ROLLBACK feature is not being used here, rather the WP:TWINKLE script is being used that has a feature that is called "Rollback" but is really just a fancy Undo link. There is an edit-war happening, but both of you are discussing this on the article talk page which is very much a good thing. R2, the ideal editing cycle is called WP:BRD, meaning you Boldly make a change, but it gets Reverted by someone, so you start Discussing the change. Suman chowdury 22, it's not helpful to keep reverted without an edit summary and Twinkle will prompt you for the edit summary. Hi Jim1138, I don't know how to react on these petty issues, given the fact that you are a very senior and decorated Editor. I admire decorated Editors quite a lot, basically because I do not think that I can get there. But seriously, with due respect, are you jealous of my beautiful signature? :P Jokes apart, I have used an image and a Flagicon in my signature. Just removing the image will solve the problem right? Because, Flagicons are not banned.

Until now, I was very proud of my signature, and after your comment I have come to realize why people say, "Wikipedia is not a place for happy people." Maybe this is why extremely gifted users like User:Phaedriel left this place, the place that they loved the most. Anyways, please warn the following users too, for using images, User:Athaenara/Gallery#Flying_the_flags. And, as for my part, I will follow what you commanded, simply because I don't want to get "Blocked/banned" from the place that I love the most. It's not my command nor my policy. Images on signatures have been shown to be problematic. If it were otherwise, the policy wouldn't be there and I would be all for any reasonable images in signatures. Your signature is quite nice and I do admire your creativity there.
