KINGSLEY NEBECHI

Kingsley Nebechi[1] is a graphic designer, illustrator and artist of Nigerian heritage. Born 30th September 1991 in the province of Siena, Tuscany in Italy, Nebechi moved to the United Kingdom and became exposed to the vast cultures and ethnic backgrounds within London.

EARLY LIFE & EDUCATION

Kingsley Nebechi attended Portsmouth University[2] between 2010-2013 where he earned a degree in Graphic Design. Whilst studying Nebechi developed a strong foundation in visual communication, typography and digital design. When starting out Kingsley studied a plethora of other artists, striving to understand what made their work special. Gradually he started exploring his own inspirations and implementing these within his work.

CAREER

Nebechi swiftly made a name for himself with his innovative approach to design. He gained recognition quickly and organically through word-of-mouth and his Instagram page.[3] In 2017 Nebechi hosted a solo exhibition entitled ‘A Soulful Mind’[4] that led to him working with Nike - a dream client of his. Fast forward to current day and Nebechi has worked with numerous high profile companies, boasting a truly impressive clientele list, some of the most notable being: Nike, Google, Apple, Facebook, Sony, United Nations, Disney, BBC, Premier League and ITV. After collaborating with Nike, Nebechi realised that freelancing was his true desire. He decided to dedicate himself fully to creating artwork for projects that align with his personal interests and artistic vision.

DESIGN STYLE & INFLUENCE

Kingsley Nebechi is known for his bold, modern aesthetic. Expressly stating that a lot of his inspiration hails from African culture, his work clearly reflects this as he often utilises patterns almost always pairing these with vibrant colours – similar to in a lot of African cultures. Nebechi describes himself as “crazy for comics” and a “fanatic about films”, most likely a passion he has maintained since his childhood as from a very young age he wanted to be able to draw for a living, explaining the significant integration of digital and hand-drawn elements within his work. Nebechi has established himself as a wildly talented figure in the design community, renowned for his distinctive style and attention to detail, furthermore, his blends of bold visuals with thoughtful design.

‘A Soulful Mind’[5] 2017

The introduction into Nebechi’s graphic design career in which he displayed works from his personal experiences in life, stemming from his deep creative roots.

‘Justine’[6] 2022 Sponsored by Bounty

A mural artwork created in collaboration with Javarri Lewis for the Blink’s light festival held in Cincinnati – America’s largest immersive art event lasting 4 days and transforming 30 city blocks with over 80 projects by a wide variety of artists.

‘Brilliant Black British History’[7] 2023 Client: Bloomsbury[8]

A book focusing on celebrating black history and the people that helped build Britain, shining light on parts of the past that are frequently left out of history books. Containing key information about complex historical topics like Windrush, the world wars, BLM, the industrial revolution and slavery.
