Bala Wunti
editBala Wunti (born 8 August 1965) is a Nigerian Chemist, business administrator, and the Group General Manager, National Petroleum Investment Management Services (NAPIMS). Before his appointment as the Group General Manager, National Petroleum Investment Management Services (NAPIMS), Wunti was Managing Director of the Petroleum Products Marketing Company (PPMC). Wunti is a fellow of the Chemical Society of Nigeria.[1]
Early life and Education
editWunti was born on 8 August 1965 in Bala,Bauchi State[2]. Wunti is an alumnus of the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, (ABU) Zaria where he obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry and a Post Graduate Diploma in Management. He obtained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Marketing from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.
Career
editBala Wunti is a thoroughbred oil and gas industry professional with 30 years of experience covering Technical, Commercial, Managerial, and Executive roles across the oil and gas value chain. Mr. Wunti has led some critical National Assignments including the review and amendment of the 1993 Deep Offshore Act to improve Government takes from Production Sharing Contracts, renegotiation of Production Sharing Contracts after over 2 decades of stalemate, and commercial negotiations for 30 different LNG related agreements. He has championed several initiatives such as the “Nigasification Strategy” for powering the Nigerian economy with natural gas and condensate, the “P-PIE Initiative” for eliminating the importation of petroleum products, and more recently optimization of upstream operating costs to sub $10/bbl. Mr. Wunti also has a proven track record in energy diplomacy and international coordination as Nigeria’s National Representative in the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) and Technical Member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Economic Board.[3]
NAPIMS
editIn March 2020, Bala Wunti was appointed to the position of the Group General Manager (GGM), National Petroleum Investment Management Services, a Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation’s subsidiary that oversees the corporation’s joint upstream investments with the major oil-producing companies in Nigeria by the presidency of Muhammadu Buhari. Before his appointment as the GGM National Petroleum Investment Management Services, Bala Wunti has served his country in different capacities. From July 2019 to March 2020, He served as Managing Director of the Petroleum Products Marketing Company (PPMC) where he ensured that petrol scarcity was eliminated by promoting transparency in fuel distribution[4].
NNPC
editBala Wunti Joined the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) in 1991 after undergoing NNPC Operations Staff Training at the Petroleum Training Institute (P.T.I.) Warri, Delta State, Nigeria. Bala Wunti has served the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation in many capacities at various times. In earlier roles, Mr. Wunti’s excellence, remarkable capability, and depth in leadership were proven beyond any reasonable doubt. He served as Group General Manager, Corporate Planning & Strategy from 2017 to 2019. He was the General Manager/Technical Advisor Downstream to Group Managing Director between 2016 to 2017, a position he assumed after being the General Manager of the NNPC Efficiency Unit from 2015 to 2016.
Brass LNG Limited
editMr. Bala Wunti held the post of Head, Market Research in Brass LNG Limited from March 2004 to 2010. At Brass LNG, Mr. Wunti pioneered the management of the Market Research section of Brass LNG Commercial Division, successfully concluding 6 LNG SPAs for 10 mtpa with Investment Grade Buyers. He Also Led and concluded a Letter for Expression of Interest (LOI) between Brass LNG and LNG Head of Terms Agreements (HoTs) with 29 potential LNG buyers. In his time at Brass LNG, he coordinated the development of economic models used in evaluating LNG SPA bids offers and the selection of potential off-takers. in addition to all these, Mr. Wunti completed several SPA’s Schedules and coordinated commercial liaison and due diligence with Brass Engineering.[5]
