This is a list of episodes for Nickelodeon's animated cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender, which first aired on February 21, 2005 with a one-hour series premiere,[1] and concluded with a two-hour series finale on July 19, 2008.[2] The Avatar franchise refers to each season as a "book", with each episode referred to as a "chapter". Each book takes its name from one of the show's four elements; Water, Earth, Fire, and Air. The show's first two seasons each comprised of twenty episodes, with the third having twenty-one. In addition to the three seasons, there were two recap episodes and three self-parodies. One summarizing the first eighteen episodes, the second summarizing season two. The first self-parody was released online via a flash game. The second and third were released with the Complete Second Season Box Set DVD.
The series has been released almost entirely on Region one DVD's, with only two more releases pending. Season one was released in five installments with four episodes each, with a six release containing everything from the previous sets. Seasons two and three followed a similar format, only with five episodes released in four installments. Only the first season has been released on Region two DVD, with the season one box set released on January 15, 2008.
Aang, the most recent incarnation of The Avatar, is released from an iceberg by Katara and Sokka of the Water Tribe. Realizing what has transpired over his 100 years asleep, he sets out to master the four elements and end the war that has ravaged the world. This requires him to travel across the planet seeking elemental bending masters to teach him their respective arts. His masters ultimately join him in his quest. While focusing on Aang, the series also focuses on Zuko, crown prince of the Fire Nation; the nation that started the war. His story initially sees him as an antagonist trying to capture Aang, but ultimately sees him regain his honor by helping Aang learn firebending and end the war.

The shorts were done in a super deformed style, and were intended to be humorous self-parodies. As for the recap episodes, the first recap was aired before the final three episodes of season one, and focused on the first seventeen episodes, while the second focused on the entire second season, and was aired in between seasons two and three.
