潘PAN (musician)

edit

Pan Wei Ju,[1] professionally known as 潘PAN and formerly known as Aristophanes,[2] is a Taiwanese rapper born in 1990.[3]

潘PAN began her music career by uploading songs onto Soundcloud.[4] She gained mainstream recognition after being discovered by and later collaborating with the American musician, Grimes.[1] The rapper was featured in two Grimes albums, Art Angels and Miss Anthropocene.[2] Her work with Grimes drew the attention of other American artists, including Will Butler, who she later collaborated with on two songs.[5][6] 潘PAN's individual work includes her 2016 EP, No Rush To Leave Dreams,[7] and her 2017 album, Humans Become Machines.[8]

Background

edit

Childhood

edit

潘PAN grew up in Taipei, Taiwan. Music was not present throughout her childhood. The rapper is quoted attributing this absence to how "[her] mother doesn’t like music so [she] knew nothing about Taiwanese or Chinese pop singers. [She] didn’t grow up in an environment where [she] can be into music so [she] heard nothing before the first time [she] heard the Mandarin rap song."[9] Rather than listen or make music, 潘PAN spent much of her childhood indulged in literature, thinking she would want to grow up to be a novelist.[9] It was her preexisting love for literature in combination with her newfound interest in music that helped to birth 潘PAN's rap career, which began at the age of 21.[1]

Personal life

edit

Music was not always 潘PAN's primary occupation. In fact, neither of the rapper's parents know of her musical career.[4] They believe she still works at her former job as a "creative writing teacher."[4] In actuality, 潘PAN now works as a musician full-time, so she can "put [her] full heart into music."[10]

Artistry

Musical Style

edit

潘PAN alternates between fast-paced raps, ethereal vocals, and visceral screams.[4][1] Her music has been described as "syrupy, idiosyncratic," "poetic,"[1] "inescapably intoxicating,"[11] "urgent," "glitchy,"[4] and more. 潘PAN herself admits, "I don’t fit into any genre, I just do whatever I want."[6] As for her flow, the rapper describes it as "weird and complicated" and "laidback and wonky."[1] This flow covers a wide array of topics, ranging anywhere from orgasms to "the decay of civilisation."[1][9]

Influences

edit

Similar to her musical style, 潘PAN's influences contain great variation, including but not limited to "the Greek philosopher Aristophanes", Taiwanese rappers such as Dan Bao, and American rappers such as Jean Grae.[1] More generally, the rapper references and finds inspiration from films, literature, "sex, gender, and feminism."[1][12]
