He seriously bagan his refereeing career in 1949, passing his examination and refereeing in The Chelmsford and Mid Essex League. After the Royal Air Force
In 1960, Tony Oliver returned to Essex a year after his National Service, settling in Eastwood, Leigh-on-Sea. He was elevated to the Supplementary Referees List of the Football Combination and to the Full List in 1964. At the same time, he was placed on the Linesmans List of the Football League.
