Hawaiian art has long been seen as a type of broadened Oceanic art. Artists of Hawaiian art have a history of not being acknowledged by name. Even though the artists are not known there are still praised by many.(Fitch. 2016) Hawaiian art is diverse and has a broad range of styles that are appealing to all ages. A few types include koa wood carvings, surf photography, painting, coconut weaving, lei making, printmaking, and heirloom jewelry. This Pacific melting pot brought the means to create many unique works of art.
Art deco, a popular 20th century architectural approach to art was introduced in Hawaii between the 1920s and the 1940s (Fitch 2016). Artists, native-born and newly arrived up took new modern traditions of art which often referred to rich cultural heritage and imagery (Fitch 2016). Known today as a melting pot, Hawaii provides a vibrant, wide array of styles and mediums for art creations and workings. Koa wood carvings, lei making, coconut weaving and surf photography are few of the many styles of art up kept by Hawaiian residents and artists
The main idea that can be observed from the Hawaiian art is that the culture, colors, and energy exposed by the islands is completely printed in their art (painting, photographs and sculptures). Also, a significant aspect of the Hawaiian art is that because of the unique culture, their art pieces possess a timeless style. However, Hawaiian art seems to change in a way from island to island. Artists native to Hawaii take advantage of the beautiful scenery that they have so close to them. The many different islands give artists a number of options for inspiration for their creations. Artists from many continents all over the world travel to Hawaii’s islands to gather inspiration for their works.(Fitch 2016)
