Marc D. Grossman is an American attorney, basketball team owner, and Broadway producer.[1] He is currently based in Puerto Rico and New York.[2]
Grossman co-owns Los Mets de Guaynabo, a professional basketball team in Puerto Rico's Baloncesto Superior Nacional.[1][3] The team was reinstated with Grossman and another co-owner, attorney Mark Linder, in 2019 after going defunct in 2015.[4][5]
His focus as a lawyer is on consumer litigation against medical providers and other class action lawsuits.[6][7] Grossman has represented clients in litigation against companies like Pfizer, Merck, Volkswagen, and Johnson & Johnson.[2][8][9][10][11][12]
Since 2014, Grossman has lived and worked in Puerto Rico.[13][14]
Early life and education
editGrossman was born in Oceanside, New York in January 1968.[2] Grossman received his bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan in 1989 and his MBA from Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College in 1993. He received his JD from Brooklyn Law School in 1993. During law school he interned for the United Nations Law Department.[2] He has been admitted to the bar in four states (New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Illinois), as well as in England.[7][8]
Mets de Guaynabo
editIn 2019, Grossman and attorney Mark Linder, both of whom reside in Puerto Rico, revived the once defunct Mets de Guaynabo in the island's premier basketball league, Baloncesto Superior Nacional.[14][1][3] BSN approved a Grossman and Linder-owned expansion team for the San Juan metropolitan area on November 22, 2019.[4][5] While the new ownership group initially eyed San Juan's Roberto Clemente Coliseum as their home court, scheduling conflicts made playing a full 2020 season there unrealistic.[5][4] Instead, the ownership group chose to revive the Mets de Guaynabo, an organization that last participated in the 2015 season.[3][1][15][14]
Grossman and Linder hired Puerto Rico national basketball team general manager Alfredo “Piraña” Morales to be the Mets' general manager.[15][1] Prior to the 2020 season, Grossman pursued former NBA All Star Metta World Peace to be the Mets' head coach.[16][3] As of December 2019, World Peace was scheduling tryouts for the team in Los Angeles as a favor to Grossman, but was not officially the coach.[17]
Legal career
editAs of 2019, Grossman is a Senior Partner at both The Sanders Firm and at Milberg, Phillips, Grossman LLP.[18] He is also an educational speaker to groups of attorneys, victims, and medical providers.[19][20][21] Grossman has contributed to "Anatomy of a Personal Injury Lawsuit"[22]
Grossman has represented clients in class action cases against pharmaceutical companies like Merck and Pfizer.[2][8][9][10][11][12]
In 2012, Grossman began representing 300 litigants in a suit against Merck after their hair loss drug Propecia began giving users enlarged breasts and impacted their sexuality.[23][24]
In 2008, Grossman began filing suits against Pfizer after users of its drug Chantix experienced suicidal tendencies.[10][11]
After the 2015 Mariana dam disaster in Brazil, Grossman and the British office of the Sanders Firm, SPG Law, represented 240,000 claimants in a £5 billion lawsuit against mining company BHP Billiton.[2][8] The suit was filed in 2018 in Liverpool and reported in the media as one of the largest claims filed in a British Court.[8][25][26] The clients Grossman's firm represented included 240,000 individuals, 24 municipal governments, 11,000 businesses, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Mariana, and about 200 members of the Krenak indigenous community.[8][25][27]
Broadway producer
editAs a Broadway producer, Grossman has produced four shows, including two in partnership with Broadway producer Ted Liebowitz and businessman Dennis Shields.[28] The production company they formed, known alternatively as "GLS Productions" and "Liebowitz/Grossman/Shields Productions," produced the 2018 Broadway musical King Kong and the 2017 Broadway drama Indecent.[29] On Broadway, Grossman produced the 2018 musical King Kong, the 2017 Broadway run of Paula Vogel's drama Indecent, the 2018 Jimmy Buffett musical Escape to Margaritaville, and the 2018 Broadway run of Pretty Woman: The Musical.[28][2]
Personal life
editIn 2014, Grossman moved with his wife and four children to Puerto Rico, where he operated a satellite office for the Sanders Firm since 2004.[13][14]
