Alfred Bean was born in Aberford, West Riding of Yorkshire 14 October 1860, the son of John Bean,Draper and his wife Harriet Stennit, a farmer's daughter. he was the third of six children. Intersetingly Alfred's eldest sister was also his cousin as his father was previously married to Ann Stennit his mother's sister.
Brought up in the drapery trade, Alfred served his apprentceship in Doncaster but 1886 he had accepted a post as a travelling salesman for Robinsons of Singapore, visiting such clients as the Sultan of Johore. Upon Philip Robinson's death on 1881, his son Stamford Raffles Robinson succeed him as owner and in 1894 offered Alfred William Bean a partnership in the business. Alfred accepeted the offer and Robinson and Co was created.
