At the 1880 Republican National Convention in Chicago, 306 of the 756 delegates voted for ex-President Ulysses S. Grant on the thirty-sixth and final ballot. These men went on to form the nucleus of the Stalwart faction of the Republican Party. They considered themselves an elite fraternity and celebrated their association for years to come, even having medallions struck for themselves, inscribed with the number "306".
List of delegates
editNotes
edit- ^ In Platt's list, he is listed as "Lane", a typographical error.
- ^ Incuded in Platt's list, but wrongly according to Peskin -- he wasn't a delegate.[8]
- ^ a b c Platt notes, but does not name, three Virginians who switched their votes to Grant only on the final ballot. Peskin does not include these men in his list of Stalwarts.[8]
