Thiranagama is a village in the southwestern Galle District of Sri Lanka,[2] known for its luxury hotels[3] including the only two 5-star hotels in the Hikkaduwa region (Riff Hotel[4] and Haritha Villas[5]).

Geography
editThiranagama is located by the Indian Ocean, 16 km (9.9 mi) north to Galle and 99 km (62 mi) south to Colombo. It is located between the tourist town of Hikkaduwa and Dodanduwa. Thiranagama is the upmarket area[6][7] of the 24 km (15 mi) coastline of Hikkaduwa District.
History
editIn the 19th century, during the British Ceylon period, Hikkaduwa region was "the great resort of picnic parties from Galle"[8] (Galle was the largest city in southern Ceylon).
Transport
editThiranagama railway station is the 43rd station[9] of the Coastal Line linking Colombo to Matara. It is located 97.8 km (60.8 mi)[9] from Colombo station. Nine trains stop there daily.[10]
Education
editThe largest school of Thiranagama is Bodhiraja Maha Vidyalaya with around 280 students.[11]
Beaches
editThiranagama is bordered by one of the most expansive beaches in the South West of Sri Lanka. Extending over 3 km (1.9 mi), this wide beach is calm and a few quality restaurants.[12] There also are several surf spots there.
Notable people
edit- Sir Arthur C. Clarke, author of 2001: A Space Odyssey, owned a holiday home in Thiranagama.[13]
