Discussion of the template

I'm not sure if this has been talked about before or not. Would it be possible to add to the Novelinfoboxneeded template the NovelsWikiProject template to reduce the amount of space taken up on a talk page? Grey Shadow 14:17, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

Hear what you are saying - the way the Auto lists are developing the situation is changing currently. I would suggest we wait before making too many changes to these for the moment. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 08:05, 10 July 2006 (UTC)
Given that Template:WPBiography has an infobox-needed parameter which adds a similar box, it's certainly possible. (It also has, in my opinion, a better way of dealing with the /Comments page which shows different text if one exists.) It uses some hairy syntax, but if anyone could port those features to this template, it would be a definite improvement. grendel|khan 06:37, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
I had a quick look at the syntax... It's beyond my skills. Grey Shadow | Talk 06:47, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

Remival of detrimental item

I removed the "tasks you can do" item from the template. The template include into hundreds of talk pages and this makes it extremely difficult to use the "what links here" function for items listed in the . `'mikka 06:44, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

yes, but there is no need to use this functionality that I am aware of, as you can get an extremely similer list by checking out Category:WikiProject Novels articles. Returned "to do list" code. If this still needs change, please debate the change first. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 09:03, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

Fix Template:NovelsWikiProject for compatibility with Template:WikiProjectBannerShell

  Resolved
 – False alarm; ignore

NovelsWikiProject is not fully compatible with WikiProjectBannerShell yet. Try the following code in a sandbox to see the "misbehavior" in action:

Namely, when class=stub, NovelsWikiProject pops up a custom messagebox below the project banner, which interferes with the proper appearance of the BannerShell; this needs to be handled the same way that the needs-photo=yes, etc., ones are for WPBiography. — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 07:31, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

Tried the test in both IE and Firefox and a fail to see the problem, must be just me but I will need a few more pointers. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 08:06, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
Woops, it wasn't this template it was Template:Film putting a box above itself. D'oh. Sorry for the false alarm. — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 17:08, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

19th century task force

editprotected
I've just started up the 19th century task force and would like to include a parameter for the task force in the template. The coding is as below, ideally placed in between "Science fiction" and "Australian".
|-
{{#ifeq:{}|yes|

This {{#ifeq:{}|NA|non-article page|article}} is supported by the 19th century task force, which deals with 19th-century novel (prose) articles.
}}

Once this parameter is set up, I'll also set up information on the Project banner, and anywhere else in WP:NOVELS that's appropriate. Cheers. Liveste (talkedits) 16:58, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

If an admin could do this one nice and promptly that would be appreciated. Thanks :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 08:42, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

Shannara task force

Can someone remove the link to the Shannara portal in the template? There is nothing in the portal, and hads no use in the template.... at least that's what I think. Am I wrong? the_ed17 02:30, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

Alright, now at least something is there. the_ed17 05:18, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

C-class

editprotected Does anyone have any idea why C-class (i.e. C-class) does not work? See The Elfstones of Shannara or King of the Silver River. If an administrator could fix the problem, that would be helpful...hence the editprotected template. the_ed17 04:57, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Second thought...if an administrator could add C-class to the template, that would be dandy...I didn't realize that it did not support C-class. Thanks in advance! the_ed17 05:17, 24 June 2008 (UTC)
Done Should work now. I've tested it on a few pages. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 07:42, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Template class not working correctly

editprotected

As the main architect of this template it gets a little difficult to change / correct now it is protected (oh well). Would an admin be able to correct this template with the code found at User:Kevinalewis/TemplateTemp. It has been changed mainly to correct the handling of Templates which were being put into "Unassessed" categories. Also the shared "Australian task force" with the Australian literature wikiproject has not been coded to assist in assigning the tagged article to the correct categories. This is now added. Thanks :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 11:06, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

Finer changes needed

editprotected

Having got rid of the bigger problems; it has revealed a few more minor problems. If this exercise could be done again it would fix them. Would an admin be able to correct this template with the code found at User:Kevinalewis/TemplateTemp. (it corrects some handling of "disambig", "image", "redirect" & "portal"s and fixes two categories used. Thanks :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 10:11, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

The project has added a new task force "Twilight" which needs supporting by the template and adding as above from the code in User:Kevinalewis/TemplateTemp. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 09:29, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Small display bug

editprotected

Uh, the banner now seems to be adding the Twilight task force by default to every talk page it's on; check out Talk:Dune (novel) and Talk:Advise and Consent, both definitely not Twilight novels ;) — TAnthonyTalk 02:44, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
I checked The Sword of Shannara, and it's fine. Dune seems unaffected. However, Advise and Consent is weird... —the_ed1702:50, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
Only a display of "Twilight" in the text of the banner on the page rather than categorisation or anything more serious. case of a one #if that should have been a #ifeq. If someone can do the honours please. As before from the code in User:Kevinalewis/TemplateTemp. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 05:51, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

Percy Jackson inclusion

Please, someone add the Percy Jackson task force and Percy Jackson importance to the template. I am not an administrator and neither are any of the other members of the task force, so we can't do it. Thanks. Pmlinediter (talk) 09:41, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

I'm working on it now. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 17:44, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
On the sandbox is a proposed conversion of the banner to WPBannerMeta. I've added the basics for Percy Jackson taskforce but you need an image. Also, do you plan to classify the articles by quality and importance? If so, this needs to be added. The code is near the bottom of the page - should be easy to work out by looking at the other taskforces. If I can help, just let me know. When it's ready I can implement it. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 18:59, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

editprotected

The sandbox has been converted back to the traditional code with the new task force included. There were all sort of problems with the converted code.

This new code can be implemented. ASAP. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 17:02, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Please remove stubclass template

editprotected Can someone please remove the highlighted code (it's near the end of the template):

}}}}{{#switch:{}|Stub|stub={{#ifeq:{}|yes|}}}}{{#if:{}|{{DEFAULTSORT:{listas}}}}}</includeonly><noinclude>

This is both unnecessary, as the banner already has an embedded message saying and doing the same thing, and problematic, as the stubclass template does not collapse within a banner shell (see Talk:She Is Here for an example). Cheers! PC78 (talk) 16:13, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Not done for now: This seems to be the intended behaviour though, to attract attention to it. WPBiography for example is behaving the exact same way. What are the other WP:NOVELS people thinking about that? --Amalthea 16:31, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
From a random sampling of a few dozen articles from Category:Automatically assessed novel articles I also didn't find another article that was automatically asessed, but had its banners organized in a shell. I'd assume that those articles' asessments will almost always have been checked by a human editor. --Amalthea 16:39, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
The banner shell should contain collapsed banners only – that's what it's there for; whether it causes a problem on one page or a hundred is a little besides the point. Why do you need the banner to display two messages that say the exact same thing? It's just adding redundant talk page clutter. PC78 (talk) 16:53, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
FYI, the bot that did the auto tagging, User:KevinalewisBot, has not done an automated edit in almost a year. —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 16:50, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
Leave please - No please don't remove that - I haven't done any work on the automatically tagged entries for a while however I have been working my way through those so tagged and clearing/processing them (there were quite a few). Once this is done I was going to run some more. Anyone else who has inclination can also tag this way (as other project have done). Also the fact that a tag isn't used much doesn't mean it should be removed. It can remain with little impact on anyone else until used again. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 16:58, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
Remove the redundant code mentioned above but not the core code that the project still uses. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 17:00, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
Done I've removed the redundant code, as that's all that was requested in the first place.--Aervanath (talk) 17:05, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Fixed. Sorry about that and thanks for bringing it to my attention. There was a slight error to the peer review function which I have (hopefully!) fixed now. There is also the option of specifying a title parameter in case the page is moved since its review. You can specify title=(old page name) and then the link will still work. I think the error crept in when this function was implemented. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 13:50, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

RFPP request

Hello, there was an WP:RFPP request made here to replace this template with the one found at Template:NovelsWikiProject/sandbox. Looking through the above discussions, I don't see any peer agreement to replace it, although the new template was mainly developed by MSGJ, who is very active here. Can one or three of you give your opinions on the matter? Thanks! Tan | 39 14:56, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

I already made this change yesterday from a request on my talk page. And no, I'm not active in this project, I've just been helping with the template! — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 15:02, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

Novel has infobox needing cover

The category:Novel has infobox needing cover is becoming too big. Is it possible to break it down by taskforce into smaller categories? eg category:Science fiction novel has infobox needing cover? Graeme Bartlett (talk) 08:13, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

Sounds like a fairly sensible idea to me. Now that the template has been changed from the standard code - I have no clue as to how to achieve this - one advantage of the "new" form! :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 08:24, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

Not sure whether this template is the problem...

I just looked at Talk:The Dispossessed, and see that in the Project Banner science fiction is abbreviated as "Sci-fi". This term is considered derogatory or pejorative by an influential portion of the science fiction community, and should not be used gratuitiously here. A simple "SF" would be better (and more space efficient). --Orange Mike | Talk 17:43, 26 May 2010 (UTC)

It is indeed set by the TF_4_NESTED parameter of this template. You could change it to whatever you like - "SF" or "Science fiction". — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 17:58, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
How???? --Orange Mike | Talk 18:06, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
