Is there a parameter for Wikipedia:WikiProject Australian places? --Scott Davis Talk 12:26, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
- place=yes -- Longhair\talk 05:21, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
V8=yes seems broken
I put V8=yes on Talk:Dick Johnson (Australian auto racing), but it didn't seem to do anything. --Scott Davis Talk 06:49, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
- It's working now Scott. I've added support for both the V8 and v8 parameter. -- Longhair 03:22, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
Sports parameters
Are the sports= param and the more specific params like V8= mutually exclusive or what?
e.g. does an article with V8=yes need to have sports=yes, must it not have sports=yes, or doesn't it matter? --kingboyk 14:13, 16 September 2006 (UTC)
- V8=yes can happilly exist without parentage of sports=yes. Only one parameter in the curent template is required, ie, sports=yes or v8 =yes are both fine without one or the other in place. -- Longhair 14:25, 16 September 2006 (UTC)
- Is the answer I wanted to hear :) Means I don't need any logic for dealing with these params. Excellent. --kingboyk 14:29, 16 September 2006 (UTC)
nbl/NBL parameter. Hundreds/thousands of articles that will be bot tagged using my plugin? Or a param for me to ignore? (New params only need to be added to the plugin if the plugin needs to write them; any params it doesn't know it ignores). Will add if needed, of course. --kingboyk 13:15, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
- I was going to let you know when I had some time to look at size of the new project myself. If you could add support for the NBL project for completness sake that'd be great. I don't think there's any more articles than a few hundred at least, but I'm only guessing at this stage.
- I've been playing with your plugin as well of late here at home and doing some testing, but haven't had much undistracted time to really give it the go *live* that I'd like. That's coming. :) -- Longhair\talk 13:23, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
- Parameters which are functionally the same are liable to cause breakage as currently programmed ("V8", "v8"; "NBL", "nbl"). However I'll put some extra code in to deal with this situation. Please in future either refrain from having these or make sure I know :) --kingboyk 18:35, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
Limiting size
Could the comments section be hidden as per the To-Do section? I'd do it myself but for the fear of angering the complex beast.--cj | talk 06:56, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
- I think the comments section is a companion alongside article assessments. Would it serve any benefit to hide this functionality by default? To shrink the template on overcrowded talk pages, try the small=yes parameter, which shrinks the template to almost userbox-sizing, and aligns it to the right. See Talk:Steve Irwin for an example. -- Longhair\talk 12:02, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
To-do
Any reason why it's been unhidden? Orderinchaos 09:54, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
- The show/hide button has been removed, or disabled. This template hasn't received any recent edits though, so the offending edit must have occured on another template. -- Longhair\talk 01:41, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah that was the first place I looked :) Thanks for that. Orderinchaos 02:43, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
- It seems every template Wikipedia-wide with similar functionality is broken. Some examples are Bellarine Peninsula, Australian Senators... Both had show/hide drop down menu functionality. -- Longhair\talk 10:37, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

Moderator Attention re Flag Picture on Template
The link to the Flag appears to be broken - I think it's the SVG file, which often don't show up. Can we please have it back (try a JPEG or PNG format), or else replace it with something that doesn't look ridiculous like the word "Flag"? JROBBO 12:51, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

Template bloated with WikiProject Australia To-do
I think the template is too bloated with the WikiProject Australia To-do at the bottom even though it can be turned off. Do others agree? Can it be removed?--Golden Wattle talk 23:18, 1 February 2007 (UTC)
- Also if somebody comes to an article talk page, they don't need to be sent off to do other tasks - a link to the project is enough of a prompt if they are browsing for inspiration of how to fill in their time. Thus not only is it too large and fills the talk page with something not relevant to the given article, I don't think it is appropriate.--Golden Wattle talk 23:22, 1 February 2007 (UTC)
- I agree that there's scope for reducing the banner's obtrusiveness, but I don't necessarily see that the to-do list is a problem. It is defaulted to hide and is only expanded by individual users looking for tasks.--cj | talk 23:30, 1 February 2007 (UTC)
- I must have clicked on it accidentally at Talk:Ariah Park, New South Wales (and it has now disappeared) - I still think even though disappeared we invite people to the project several times and it is too much for something not directly relevant to the article itself. --Golden Wattle talk 23:47, 1 February 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, after catching up on some relevant arguments at WP:COUNCIL, I tend agree that we should keep out all un-necessary meta-data and limit it to data which is, as you say, pertinent to the article itself.--cj | talk 01:44, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia:WikiProject Riverina
Could we please have a parameter to support Wikipedia:WikiProject Riverina, a sub project of Wikipedia:WikiProject Australian places. Could the icon please be - ie Thanks --Golden Wattle talk 23:26, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Nested functionality
I posted on the project talk page a request for comment on adding the "nested=yes" parameter to your banner. I haven't heard much response and wondered if we could go ahead and add the code? The relevant changes can be seen at example template and example template at work. Please let me know if you have questions, comments, etc. -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 22:41, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
- Itt would be better if it showed the subsidiary projects, ie in the example it should show Wikiproject Adelaide, I have no problem with the concept and concatenated approach allowing expansion.--Golden Wattle talk 00:17, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
- Hi, Golden Wattle - I've made the change to address this. Take a look at Template:WikiProjectBannerShell/Example Australia for the code, and Template talk:WikiProjectBannerShell/Example Australia for the template in action. - Looks good enough with the subsidiary projects. I'd say go ahead in the absense of any "no! don't!" comments. It appears not to break the existing appearance as the default anyway. --Scott Davis Talk 08:36, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

Replace image with SVG version?
As it was requested at Category:Images which should be in SVG format, I have converted the project icon to SVG. It is available at Image:Aus tv.svg (from Commons). Next step is to replace all instances of the old image with the SVG version; I can't do that here, as it is protected. Can someone, please? Cheers, Stannered 20:20, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- editprotected. The icon you suggest doesn't look the same as the current icon. Is there consensus to change to the new icon? CMummert · talk 20:31, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- It doesn't? It was intented to look as close as I could get to the original - the rotation of the knob is slightly off, and on closer examination, the flag might be shifted horizontally by a pixel or so, but still... Stannered 21:02, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- My fault - I thought you were replacing the flag, since the TV icon is not visible on the template page. The edit has been made. CMummert · talk 21:23, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

Changes
I've introduced a few significant changes to the template:
- Using WP India code, I've put in a list-class option.
- To trim down the size and keep out un-necessary data (pursuant to above discussion), I've removed Australia opentask and placed assessment comments in the collapsible section.
- I've separated task parameters (peer-review, ACOTF, etc) from subproject parameters with a horizontal rule.
There are some changes to the way the template now functions. For instance, when class is specified as NA or List, the importance parameter remains. Ideally, I'd like it to not show as previously, but I can't figure the code. The task parameters also need to be updated for the list-class option. --cj | talk 23:24, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
Is maintained by?
I notice this template says the article "is maintained by" WP:AUS. It seems to me that saying "is within the scope of" (as WPBiography does, for example) would be more appropriate and make more sense. Not a big deal, but "is maintained by" has a hint of WP:OWNership about it. Plus, I've seen evidence that it's a bit of an exaggeration in some cases, e.g., The Radiators (Australian band), which I created to fill in a redlink, had the WP AUS banner added by someone else, but has had almost no maintenance by anyone. Not that I'm complaining, mind you. I'm just tossing an idea out for discussion. Xtifr tälk 13:03, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
- "...is within the scope of" works for me. If I remember correctly, I edited the template to read "is maintained by" when the article on the Tim Tam was speedy deleted. It'd be nice if those deleting articles on a whim advised the WikiProject concerned for comment prior to deletion, but the wiki-world is far from perfect. I'm supportive of your suggested rewording. -- Longhair\talk 13:16, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
- Perhaps we could have it render as "is within the scope of" for articles, but retain "is maintained by" for non-article pages, where the scope doesn't necessarily make sense?--cj | talk 13:21, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
- That suggestion makes good sense. -- Longhair\talk 13:35, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
- I certainly have no objection. Unless you're asking me to code it, in which case I will object that it sounds like more work than it's worth. But otherwise, I think it sounds great. :) Xtifr tälk 11:18, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
- i actually came here to make exactly the same "within the scope of" suggestion. i do think that it is well worth the work because aside from the issue of whether or not the page is actually being "maintained", this terminology is exclusionary and shout's "hands off" at non-members who might be interested in contributing. xx baby_ifritah 13:22, 4 May 2007 (UTC)

places vs place
If you use places=yes in the template then it displays as per the small version. Where as using place=yes it displays correctly in the normal version. Gnangarra 05:07, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

TV and Television params

Sub-project categories
I notice that pages tagged with this banner are put in only the appropriate "*-class Australia articles" and "*-importance Australia articles", in the case of sub-projects, they are also included in the main "WikiProject *** articles" category. I don't think these redundant categories should be there at all, but they definitely don't belong when class=NA. JPD (talk) 14:18, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
- I think the rating and category for the wikiprojects should remain, however (and I realise this might take a bit of work) the rating level for the sub-projects should be acknowledged in the visible part of the template.
- For example: when you insert "|Townsville = yes" it inserts " This article is supported by WikiProject Townsville." and if you insert:"|Townsville-importance = Top" it categorises the article in :Category:Top-importance Townsville articles. :I would like to suggest that when "|Townsville-importance = Top" is added than the template changes to " This article is supported by WikiProject Townsville. (rated as Top importance)
- I think the case of the importance rating for Wikiproject Australia being different to the rating of a sub-project would be quite frequent and so the suggestion above would be a really useful tweak to the template which will empower sub wikiprojects more. Thanks, WikiTownsvillian 08:49, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
- Your suggestion has merit. However, maybe I did not put my suggestion very well. Of course the separate subproject rankings should be there, and the talk pages placed in the appropriate quality and importance categories, but they do not need to be placed in, for example, Category:WikiProject Townsville articles as well as Category:Top-importance Townsville articles. The template does not use such redundant categorisation for the Australia WikiProject, and it is definitely not appropriate for the non-articles. JPD (talk) 16:25, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
- I think I understand what you're saying, however I think I still disagree with you as having the full list of articles that are being maintained by the sub wikiproject is a useful list for those in the sub-wiki as well as the lists of articles by importance and quality. with almost 26 000 articles wikiproject Aust is too big for Category:WikiProject Australia articles to be of much use to the project. I agree with you on the non-articles bit, they should not go to the category. Thanks, WikiTownsvillian 22:21, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
- See Template:WP Banksia for what I'm talking about, WP Australia should have the same below the line thing and when a sub-wiki is added (eg. |Townsville=yes} it adds a similar thing below the line, like in WP Banksia. Thanks, WikiTownsvillian 23:25, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
- As I said before, that has merit and may be worth putting some effort into. However, removing the Category:WikiProject Townsville articles, etc. is very simply done and would solve the problem of non-articles being categorised with the only "downfall" being the loss of the full lists of sub-project articles. I think this is actually a positive thing, inline with the spirit of WP:SUBCAT. JPD (talk) 14:56, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

I've not followed this discussion fully, but I made a couple edits the other night to the Adelaide and NT parameters which removed "WikiProject X articles" category from non-article pages. I was intending on applying the changes to all parameters, but haven't yet had time.--cj | talk 15:06, 5 May 2007 (UTC)
- I would have simply removed Cat:WikiProject X articles altogether, as redundant, but thought this might not be fully appreciated so mentioned it here first. Since it seems most people do want to retain the full lists, Cyberjunkie's solution seems fine. As for WikiTownsvillian's suggestions, I have implemented somethign like it for Townsville. It can be copied for any of the other subprojects, although not all of them seem to have done any importance rating yet. JPD (talk) 16:54, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

Tagging
For some time now I have been dabbling with putting WP Australia class=NA in category talk pages, partially as a way of tracking through the full ranges of categories and their populations - as well as allocating various projects indicators. (Tasmania, WA and much less maritime history - and about to start Northern territory) I do have a question for this whole process: Is there a rule/policy about joint project involvement - where multiple projects might claim custodianship so to speak? I would be interested - so as to get a sense of whether its ok to be allocating more than one - whether certain parameters might determine whether one has precedence over another etc. I ask this as to whether there are any issues with current templates. cheers SatuSuro 11:50, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

NA importance, but...
There's something funny with non-article importances (is that a word? ah what the hell). Compare Talk:1788 in Australia with Talk:1790 in Australia - both are classed as lists and so the banner says that the importance is NA. But one has importance=low and another has no importance value given. These importance categories are still shown at the base of the page (Low and Unassessed). Is that right? - 52 Pickup 19:44, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
Would it possible to integrate a parameter for the above into the template please? Also, what's involved in giving the sub-project its own assessment categories? —Moondyne 14:02, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

WA-Importance Categories
The Categories in here seem to be saying that they are unassessed, but categories cant be assessed, i think that there is a problem with the template maybe. Unsure. Thanks Twenty Years 11:31, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
- Ah, I see what the problem is. Anyone in favour of either creating a series of subcats for categories under quality, or excluding them from subproject selection on quality? Orderinchaos 22:30, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
- I can't imagine why we'd need/want to assess cats for quality; best to exclude them I'd say. —Moondyne 00:03, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
- needs to be removed from all those cat pages. It's not necessary. Giggy UCP 00:14, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
- Maybe - as it is an Australia project issue surely it goes to the noticeboard - its not just a wa tagging issue but project wide issue. However the issue of cats (ask me I have been there....) is that they are non assessable full stop - no question or argument on that SatuSuro 00:21, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
- Category *is* an assessment, so they don't need to be assessed. (i.e. one is saying "This article is a category and needs no further assessment") As a result it appears as a subcat under quality - which was my question above. Orderinchaos 01:14, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
- I think that when category is selected, it should not populate a category as it's superfluous to do so. I think it should just categorise any of the other types of articles the template's placed onto, but not cats, because it also becomes something of an eyesore with a thousand categories included (has anybody seen how many are on Kylie Minogue? I mean, FFS seriously). --lincalinca 06:13, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

- Conversation here is about when finding a category talk page (not an article page) blissfully clear of any interference - then if being tagged for WikiProject Australia - if the class=cat is typed in - the resultant view of the template tag on that talk page has a not assessable/ or no comment at all in the box? I thought that was what we are talking about? Multiple projects tagged on a talk page is no problem as long as they are relevant SatuSuro 06:20, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
- I can't imagine why we'd need/want to assess cats for quality; best to exclude them I'd say. —Moondyne 00:03, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
To explain - We rate pages by placing this template on the article's talk page. At present, they are going into a "Non-article pages" category. We are arguing they would be more usefully held at a "Category pages" category. This would not add categories to the articles themselves, but is purely for rating and sorting purposes (i.e. so we can find all category pages related to a particular project). Orderinchaos 09:00, 13 July 2007 (UTC) Another way of saying it - WP Australia template goes on all article talk pages in the project - when the groups of articles are given categories - they collect under that categories page title - when we tag an article with a category at the front - it goes into that category - when we tag the actual category page as a class=cat, it has no need to be assessed because it is a category - probably even less clear ? SatuSuro 10:11, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
- Basically, i am completely lost here with all the jargon and wiki-ness. What i think should happen is that we tag categories like they are, but have like a "N/A" rating for them, so that they are removed from the unassessed category. This way they are not clogging up the category. Basically what i was wondering, is how on earth this can be done? Twenty Years 15:03, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
- As I said way back, it can be done, but needs consensus for a method to do it, as any way it can be done will add bulk to already bulky code. (The most likely way is adding an exception line under every subproject as we've done with Lists) Orderinchaos 15:25, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
So the problem could be resolved in this bit of code (using Adelaide example).
{{ #switch: {}
...
}}
where we should add a line something like
|Cat|cat|Category|category =
Would you support this? :: maelgwn - talk 14:04, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

- I finally got around to fixing this problem. Have tested it and it appears to work fine - Categories will now not show in "Unassessed ____ articles" or in "Unknown-importance Australia articles". I didn't see the point in creating a new catalogue of category pages when all categories are in "Category-Class Australia articles anyway". Orderinchaos 14:21, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

Request to change template
editprotected I feel that this template should be changed to be similar with WPFootballinAus and Football templates. A good example of this is shown in this talk page Notice that the WP Australia template has NO rating option for importance as well as for the quality scale. Compared with the other two templates, there are these statements in the two templates which are; This article has been rated as Cat-Class on the quality scale. and This article has been rated as NA-importance on the importance scale. If someone can fix this template to be more consistent with the above two templates, it would be much appreciated. --Siva1979Talk to me 13:01, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
- There is an importance scale (eg. see Talk:Queensland), but it is set to not appear when certain classes are given - and Category is one of these classes. From the link that you posted, all of those banners show NA for category anyway, so having importance for Cat-class is pretty redundant. - 52 Pickup 13:23, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
- I don't completely understand the issue here. We have quality and importance ratings, and categories don't need an importance rating - eg Category talk:Government of New South Wales Orderinchaos 13:27, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
- If its possible wouldnt it be better to have the template automatically idenity wikipedia, template and category type pages and tag them as NA-importance Gnangarra 14:31, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
- Have the template automatically detect if it is a template/category page? Interesting idea. I think that's doable. But since it is given that template and category pages are NA, is it really necessary to state that they are NA? - 52 Pickup 14:58, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
- Well, there is no harm done in stating that they are NA. In fact this would be consistent with the Football template. --Siva1979Talk to me 04:13, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
- Its not necessary to state NA but it is necessary to exclude them from unassessed categories, if that was able to be done automatically by the template then its a benefit. Gnangarra 04:24, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
- WP Australia has been progressively streamlined to make it less obtrusive – we're not about to backtrack. If consistency is such a concern, then Football should be altered.--cj | talk 04:28, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

- For every example you give, there are just as many counter-examples. Setting all of them just for the benefit of one template is absurd. What is the point of having 2 or more banners all saying that the page is NA? This WP Australia template avoids stating such redundant information (all category pages are "NA", so why state it?), and that is the way it should be. - 52 Pickup 09:13, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
- That's laughable. Why would we want to conform to a lesser-used template of an inferior design?--cj | talk 10:58, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

Assesment comments
I question the need for this at all. In my experience almost no-one uses the facility (I'm sure there are some, but I can't think of a way of seeing how many/which articles have comments added). It smells a bit of instruction creep and unnecessary clutter IMO. And if we do decide that we need it, wouldn't a direct link to the comments page be better rather than a show/hide button? That way you could see that the comments actually existed by the link being blue rather than red. —Moondyne 04:27, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

Importance assessment for other associated projects
Greetings! I'm rather new to adding WP:AUS project tags on my articles and had a quick question. I placed a tag on Talk:Stylidium semaphorum and assessed it as Stub/Low and as WA=yes and biota=yes, but it gets auto-categorized into Category:Unknown-importance Australian biota articles and Category:Unknown-importance Western Australia articles. Am I missing a parameter to assess it for these projects like "WA-importance=" and "biota-importance=" that I didn't see in the instructions? If you don't have these yet, you might consider including them in the template like we did at Carnivorous Plants (we included a "plants-importance=" parameter so we could include separate importance assessments). Cheers, --Rkitko (talk) 17:05, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
- The WA-importance and biota-importance parameter do exist. The correct stanza is then . Isn't it possible to deduce biota-importance and WA-importance from the importance parameter? Comte0 08:36, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

- This is something which has not been implemented yet. It's something that might possibly be done in the future, but it's relatively uncommon for projects to need additional taskforces so I don't think it will be a priority. UberCat WikiProject Australia articles
This template does not add articles to the ubercat of Category:WikiProject Australia articles, only to the subcats such as Category:WikiProject Australian television articles and the overall importance/quality cats. I've have a look through the history and there is a bit of a discussion in Archive 2, saying the duplication isn't needed for such a large cat. Well Category:WikiProject_Biography_articles doesn't seem to worry about their almost 800,000 articles in one cat. Why do I care? Well User:DASHBot is now running nightly comparisons of project articles against Category:All unreferenced BLPs, and if we don't populate a single cat with all of WP:Aust's articles, then we either need to convince Tim to do a recursive scan of the importance/quality cat, or go without an overall Australia uBLP listing. Given the number of articles not in subprojects, I don't like that idea. So can someone more aware of the intricacies of the template please add the ubercat of Category:WikiProject Australia articles to the template? Thanks The-Pope (talk) 11:38, 15 March 2010 (UTC)

- Yes, that is indeed how it can be accomplished. (But
|MAIN_CAT=WikiProject Australia articles
would be simpler if you want to categorise all pages.) However as this has been discussed before, with some opposition, then it would be worth leaving this proposal for a few days to gather comments. Add missing parameter for Canberra/ACT project
editprotected
I've been finding more than a handful of articles with the parameter |ACT=yes
that must be left over from when ACT was a separate project. Since those articles are not populating the Canberra articles category, if you would add the parameter to the template, it would enable those articles to be sorted into Category:WikiProject Canberra articles. Perth integrated into WA
This edit request has been answered. Set the |answered= or |ans= parameter to no to reactivate your request. |
For the past few years, WP:PERTH has been a task force of WP:WA rather than a full-on project. However, tagging an article with Perth=yes doesn't automatically add it to WP:WA, leaving about 90 of the 1000 articles in WP:Perth not in WP:WA. Can you please edit the template to make that happen. I note that there appear to be two styles of "OR" statements in the template - all in one:
- |tf 3={{{QLD|{{{qld|{}}}}}}}
or all in series:
- |tf 4={}{}{}.
Is one style more correct than the other? Either way, I think that tf 8 needs to become:
- |tf 8={{{WA|{{{wa|{}}}}}}} or
- |tf 8={}{}{}
tf10 in the WPBannerMeta/hooks/tfnested section also needs the same addition. tf 9 = can remain as is, to still maintain the Perth lists (for now). The-Pope (talk) 13:02, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

|QLD=

|Tasmania=yes
. - Bearing this in mind, consider the case that somebody writing about a Kalgoorlie topic might put
|WA=yes
|Perth=no
, a reasonable combination. Your first suggestion expands to|tf 8=yes
but the second expands to|tf 8=yesno
so the first sounds as if it would be best. But consider the case that somebody might have put|WA=
|Perth=yes
, note that|WA=

but the second expands to|tf 8=yes
so the second now appears to be best. My suggestion would be:|tf 8={{#if:{}{}|{{{WA|{wa}}}}|{}}}

|Perth=
into account if neither|WA=
and|wa=
are present. It is not truly universal, but combines both possibilities. --Redrose64 (talk) 17:19, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

- The basic difference is that when there are three parameters next to each other, ie
{}{}{}
, each parameter is checked to see if it was assigned a value: if so it is replaced by that value, otherwise it is left blank. - So if the template is called with
|A=yes
with B and C omitted, the above code has the value "yes". But if it is called with|A=yes
|B=no
|C=no
, the above code would have the value "yesnono" - When the parameters are nested inside each other, ie
{{{A|{{{B|{}}}}}}}
they are checked sequentially from left to right until a parameter has an assigned value. - So if the template is called with
|A=some value
, then B and C are not checked, and the above code has the value "some value". If it is called without parameter A, and|B=something else
, then C is not checked, and the above code would have the value "something else". If it is called without parameters A and B, and with|C=third option
, then the above code would have the value "third option". - However, if a parameter is specifically left blank, it breaks the chain, ie with
|A=
|B=something
, the above code would have the value "" (nothing), rather than "something" - This all follows on from the basic principle that the pipe symbol indicates a default value: {default text} means use the value assigned to
|A=
, or else use "default text", unless it is intentionally left blank as in|A=
|B=value

WikiTowns -- possible parameter
Currently Toodyaypedia article and Freopedia article are being used to identify articles that have been QR coded as part of their respective projects given that most of these articles also have this template on their talk page as well I thinking would it be possible to nest WikiTowns within the template. Thinking of adding a parameter like wikitown=freo or wikitown=toodyay which would then replace the templates purpose, then as more town come on line it'd be a simple matter of offering more parameter options. thoughts Gnangarra 15:04, 26 March 2014 (UTC)
- I've done some coding in the sandbox, the results can be seen here. I had to use a second parameter
|wikitown-status=
to retain the current function of separate messages/categories for organisation, linked articles, confirmed articles, potential articles... but if you think we could get by with a single message and everything in one category (for each WikiTown), it would make the code a bit simpler. - Evad37 [talk] 01:04, 27 March 2014 (UTC)- Thanks I really dont the why of all the parameters for the templates, I just copied to create Toodyay, and thought there has to be easier way than this... I think there needs to be two categories, for when the plaques are in place(printed) and ones that have yet to be done. We also need to consider how to replicate this as more WikiTowns are created so it may be best to have the in place incorporated and retain a separate template for catching the potential that way as new projects develop they can create the holding template easy enough. |wikitown=
parameter, there should be a second parameter,|QR=yes
or|QR=no
, which would change the wording and category used for the QR code plaque was in pace or not. We'd have to decide what the default behaviour would be - defaulting to the message/cat for when the plaque hasn't been installed yet would seem to make sense. - As for the message itself, maybe we should turn it around so that the project is towards the beginning instead of at the end... something like
- This article is within the scope of WikiTown Someplacepedia, and will be linked to by one or more organisations, using QRpedia.
- This article is within the scope of WikiTown Someplacepedia, and is linked to by one or more organisations, using QRpedia. Statistics are available.

If your happy with this I'll do the coding for it in the sandbox, and then it can be tested and added to the main template. (Or if I've misunderstood – I'm a little tired at the moment – you can explain it again :) - Evad37 [talk] 14:20, 27 March 2014 (UTC)
- @Gnangarra: I've refined the coding in the sandbox per the above. Just to clarify, usage would be as follows:
- Usage for articles: Add
|wikitown=someplace
to the talkpage banner to mark an article as within the scope of Someplacepedia. This would also place the page in Category:Articles that will be linked to by Someplacepedia. If a QR plaque has been installed, also add|QR=yes
, which will adjust the message and include the statistics link, and place the page in Category:Articles linked to by Someplacepedia. - To set up a new wikitown: To add a new WikiTown project, such as WikiTown Foobarpedia: (1) add
|foobar
to the line{{#switch:{{lc:{}}}|freo|toodyay=yes}}
(before the=yes
); (2) add the line|foobar = <some relevent image>.jpg
below where the ones for the other projects are specified (or if not specified, the image will default to a QR code); (3) Create the pages/categories Wikipedia:Foobarpedia, Category:Articles linked to by Foobarpedia, Category:Articles that will be linked to by Foobarpedia.

- WikiTown Toodyaypedia is a defined project, so "within the scope of ..." make sense. However, what does "is linked via WikiTown Toodyaypedia" or "is linked to by one or more organisations" actually mean? I don't believe it tells us anything. So far as I can tell from QRpedia (and I admit to knowing nothing about the subject other than what I read in that article), all of the plaques encode a URL, qrwp.org/Article_name, and qrwp.org redirects the browser to (the mobile version of) the Wikipedia article in the appropriate language, or a Google translation of the article. All such articles - regardless of what town they are in, or whether or not there is a WikiTown project - are linked via the single organization QRpedia and/or its server qrwp.org. More accurate text might be:
- qr=yes: This article is within the scope of WikiTown Toodyaypedia, and is the target of a QRpedia link. Statistics are available.
- qr=no: This article is within the scope of WikiTown Toodyaypedia.
- Note that qr=no does not mention future QRpedia, because according to Category:WikiTowns "WikiTowns are projects based in towns that support Wikipedia outreach activity" - there's no requirement for a WikiTown to use QRpedia now or in future. We might declare our intent to install QRpedia plaques on the project page, but I don't think we gain anything by declaring automatically - and possibly incorrectly - that intent on each article talk page.
- It's possible that there are links to the article from something other the QRpedia plaques; eg the Toodyay Shire or Historical Society might, with our explicit assistance as part of the WikiTown project, put links to a Wikipedia article from the relevant page on their websites about each historical building. We might want to indicate that specifically (eg as we do for QRpedia), but if so, it should probably be separate template parameter (eg otherlinks=), because such links and QRpedia are independent of each other. If we do that, we can either:
- Add some extra words covering those links, which means we have to think up some appropriate words (eg " linked to by external organisations associated with the WikiTown", but needs refining), and have complicated template syntax to cover the punctuation etc for all four combinations of qr= and otherlinks=
- if otherlink=yes, ignore qr= and revert to just "linked to by other organisations", which is vague, but correct.
- (And again, if otherlink=no the template gives no indication of future intent.)
- So, it seems we need to answer the question: is the template to be limited to QRpedia only, or do we want to explicitly mention links to Wikipedia articles from other external sites (related to the WikiTown project)?
- Mitch Ames (talk) 12:54, 29 March 2014 (UTC)
- As always good points knew Mitch would be able to help, QR coding is the primary aim at the moment but your right there will be alternative linking method being use both via web links and NFC technology there are bound to be other formats as well. so the base text would be this article is within the scope of WikiTown Toodyaypedia then link=qr would add this article is the target of a QRpedia link. Statistics are available. link=other returning linked to by other organisations if specific stats are available for other link types then a parameter for them can be added. link= with no value would just not be shown Gnangarra 13:41, 29 March 2014 (UTC)
- I think the QR link should be separate from other links - who is to say that an article won't have both a QR plaque and a link from an external website? So maybe we could have the
|QR=
yes
/no
(or blank), and a separate|link=
parameter for linking back to webpage that links to the article – eg|link=http://www.toodyay.wa.gov.au/connor-s-mill.aspx
producing something like "It is linked to by an associated organisation." (or similar/better wording). Keeping this part as a separate sentence, whether the article is QR linked or not, would perhaps simplify the punctuation situation. The "It is linked" could be changed to "It is also linked" for|QR=yes

QR coding ... alternative linking method being use both via web links and NFC technology ...
Some thoughts... QRpedia combines two independent technologies, QR codes (encoding url=qrwp.org) and "redirect to Wikipedia article in my preferred language". Imagine there were circumstances where NFC (or some other front end technology) might be desirable instead of (or as well as) QR code, and someone implemented it; the second part of QRpedia (redirect to preferred language Wikipedia) does not need to change. The qrwp server might not even need to know whether the front end is QR or NFC - that's merely a way of encoding a qrwp.org url. (Demonstration of this - tell my browser that my preferred language is French, then type in an URL of http://en.qrwp.org/Toodyay, and it take me to the French mobile version of the Toodyay article - no actual QR code was used.) Would "QRpedia" change its name then? Probably not. If someone were to implement NFC front-ends - and some WikiTowns used only QRcodes, some used only NFC, and some used both - would we bother with distinguishing in the template between QR code plaques and NFC readers? We could if we wanted to, eg|NFC=yes
.- Links from external web sites are more useful because - as Evad37 demonstrates above - we can link back to them. Linked to by "an associated organisation" still sounds clunky, but why not allow customizable text:
|link=http://www.toodyay.wa.gov.au/connor-s-mill.aspx
|linkfrom=the Shire's web site
gives "It is linked to from the Shire's web site." Could/should we have a per-WikiTown value or default, so we don't have to put it on every page? Mitch Ames (talk) 02:36, 30 March 2014 (UTC)- The
|linkfrom=
parameter seems like a good idea, but I think the default needs to be more generalised - otherwise, if an editor just pastes in the url without using the|linkfrom=
parameter, the template could wrongly imply an affiliation between the default organisation and some other website. Seems safer – and easier for coding – to have something general like "associated organisation" if|linkfrom=
hasn't been specified. - Evad37 [talk] 05:47, 30 March 2014 (UTC)- what about saying linked by a collaborative partner that way it doesnt get misused for say something like bobs book of birdies dot org and the template document can specify its for WikiTown collaborative partners if they link from their official site only... Gnangarra 13:18, 30 March 2014 (UTC)
- Regardless of the wording of any default value
|linkfrom=
, I agree we do need to state explicitly in the documentation that the parameter is for WikiTown partners (or words to that effect) only. Mitch Ames (talk) 12:22, 31 March 2014 (UTC)

- The
categories
- In light of the discussion above, what categories do we to use? Perhaps "Someplacepedia articles" with a subcat "Articles linked to by Someplacepedia" (similar to existing categories) – or should QR-linked articles be in a separate category to otherwise-linked articles? - Evad37 [talk] 12:15, 1 April 2014 (UTC)
- for categories I think,
- QR linked Australian articles
- WikiTown Someplace articles
- Articles linked to by Someplacepedia
- the category:Articles linked to by Someplacepedia would then be a sub category of the other two Gnangarra 11:31, 4 April 2014 (UTC)
- for categories I think,
- OK, I think we should be basically good to go, except that "WikiTown Someplace articles" should be "WikiTown Someplacepedia articles" (otherwise we would get cats like "WikiTown Freo articles" rather than "WikiTown Freopedia articles"). I'll just wait for @Mitch Ames: to comment, as it is easier to fix any issues now rather than at a CFD. - Evad37 [talk] 02:20, 5 April 2014 (UTC)
- Articles linked to by Someplacepedia should be a subcat of WikiTown Someplacepedia articles, because we've agreed that
|linkfrom=
is only for WikiTown partners. However Articles linked to by Someplacepedia should not be a subcat of QR linked Australian articles, because membership of the first does not imply membership of the second. Nor is the reverse true. Eg an article can be an Article linked to by Someplacepedia without having a QR code. Likewise there may be articles linked to via QRpedia that are not part of an Australian WikiTown, eg Talk:Children's Chapel, St James' Church, Sydney. Thus in the category hierarchy, Articles linked to by Someplacepedia and QR linked Australian articles are independent, as are WikiTown Someplacepedia articles and QR linked Australian articles. - We already have Category:Articles linked to by QRpedia, so QR linked Australian articles should perhaps be Australian articles linked to by QRpedia (and a subcat of Category:Articles linked to by QRpedia) - and, as already implied, not everything in that category will be a part of a WikiTown or even necessarily be part of an Australian WikiProject.
- We should probably also be asking for input from WT:QR.
- See also: Help talk:Mobile access#QRpedia. Mitch Ames (talk) 12:58, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
- Okay, perhaps a better category structure would be Articles linked to by Someplacepedia as a subcat of WikiTown Someplacepedia articles, Australian articles linked to by QRpedia as a subcat of Articles linked to by QRpedia, and use "See also" hatnotes to link Australian articles linked to by QRpedia and Australian articles linked to by WikiTowns, which would be a container for all the Articles linked to by Someplacepedia categories.
- In anycase, I think the code to categorise the pages would be the same:
|wikitown=someplace
→ Category:WikiTown Someplacepedia articles|wikitown=someplace
|link=<somelink>
→ Category:WikiTown Someplacepedia articles & Category:Articles linked to by Someplacepedia|wikitown=someplace
|QR=yes
→ Category:WikiTown Someplacepedia articles & Category:Articles linked to by Someplacepedia & Category:Australian articles linked to by QRpedia
- If an article is linked by QRpedia but not part of a WikiTown project, the situation would be the same as at the moment (a separate template doing its own categorisation) - Evad37 [talk] 14:08, 7 April 2014 (UTC)

- just a thought would it not be better to have Category:Articles linked via QRpedia in Australia as not all topics are specifically Australian aka Herbert Hoover, US Submarine Assoc, Royal Marines and a couple of others that have been coded in Connors Mill Gnangarra 00:40, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
- Actually, since this will be used on articles which won't have a WP:AUS talk page banner, maybe the code should be in a separate Australian WikiTown template, and then shortcut templates like Someplacepedia could automatically fill in
|wikitown=someplace
, and pass through the values of the other parameters. It would still be just as easy to code for new Wikitowns, and the documentation page would then be specific for the wikitown parameters, so the explanation of thelink
/linkfrom
parameters would be less likely to be overlooked. Or perhaps it could be even more generalised to just wikitown with a|country=
parameter (to be filled in by the shortcut templates) which could set Category:Articles linked via QRpedia in Country - Evad37 [talk] 01:25, 8 April 2014 (UTC)- makes sense too then non australian WikiTowns could also follow suit and even have them nested together where article are in multiple projects like Moondyne Joe Gnangarra 08:06, 9 April 2014 (UTC)
- I've done some coding in my sandbox, User:Evad37/sandbox/Template:Wikitown/testcases is the result. I haven't yet done the QRpedia in Country categories, but the rest is working, including nesting multiple wikitowns. - Evad37 [talk] 13:24, 9 April 2014 (UTC)
- All done now (except that Wikipedia:WikiTown is a redlink). I used namespace detection, so that only article talk pages use the above categories. Other talk pages, such for the main project page, will use Category:WikiTown Someplacepedia project pages (so that the banner can be placed on the talk pages of all the wikitown's categories, templates, Wikipedia: pages etc). Hi, Neat post. There is a problem with your web site in internet explorer, would check this… IE still is the market leader and a huge portion of people will miss your fantastic writing due to this problem. best wishes

Parameters aliases
Using many parameter aliases may cause undetected duplicated parameters. I suggest that we cleanup the code and keep only one name per parameter. @Redrose64, Frietjes, WOSlinker, and Jonesey95:. -- Magioladitis (talk) 11:47, 8 January 2016 (UTC)
- Having parameter aliases makes the template easier to use for the end user. I don't think we should be making things unnecessarily harder when alternative technical measures are possible - ie coding so that if a parameter and its alias are both defined, the page is added to a tracking category (definitely possible with #if: statements, possibly could be done better in Lua). Also, users of this template should be notified at WP:AWNB - Evad37 [talk] 00:30, 9 January 2016 (UTC)
- Yes, see User talk:Frietjes#Template:WikiProject Australia. But we should make sure that the template is internally consistent - for example the three parameters
|motorsport=
|V8=
|v8=
are aliases with equal precedence in the main part of the template, but when the template is nested inWikiProjectBannerShell
etc.,|motorsport=
has precedence over|v8=
which in turn has precedence over|V8=
. Associated with these is an importance parameter - but for that, the order of precedence is|motorsport-importance=
|V8-importance=
|v8-importance=

QLD vs qld
I have just noticed that there is a difference between writing QLD=y or qld=y in that the first produces the State Library of Queensland and the second doesn't, as illustrated in this diff. I would have expected QLD and qld to behave identically. I experimented with NSW vs nsw and again they are different. I am guessing this is an all-states bug. Kerry (talk) 06:02, 10 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Kerry Raymond: Indeed, a problem for all states, plus Northern Territory. In this edit, I have made them consistent in the manner that you noticed with the libraries, and have also made precedence consistent too - all capitals (like
|QLD=yes
) has precedence over all small (like|qld=yes
) which itself has precedence over full name (like|Queensland=yes
). --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 11:49, 10 August 2018 (UTC) - I just noticed that all WikiProject Austalia banners are now mentioning "State Library of New South Wales" even when there is no NSW field in use, e.g. Talk:Telecommunications (Interception and Access) Amendment (Data Retention) Act 2015 (no state selected) or Talk:Hobart Town Hall (Tasmania selected). Both needs-photo and state parameters
Is there a way to include pages in "Wikipedia requested photographs in [STATE]" when adding both |needs-photo=
and the state (for example) |Victoria=
?
I see it can be done if |in=
is used or by adding , but I feel this is a little redundant as I've already said the state.
Current options are:

or

- I think just the states (and NT/ACT), as most things would fall under one of those (things that don't are probably related to general Australia). It would help if we could distribute the currently 1,415 such tagged pages to the appropriate states/territories where people are more likely to then be able to add the pictures. -- ThylacineHunter (talk) 17:48, 2 June 2023 (UTC)

Basically, if there's a parameter that triggers one or more of the eight state/territory task forces, the page will be categorised into the appropriate one of eight specific subcats of Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Australia; if none apply, it'll go into Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Australia itself. Note that
|Perth=yes
will trigger the WA category, but|Sydney=yes
won't trigger the NSW cat. This is in line with how the state task forces operate. - But as ever, please show consensus for this change. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 19:47, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
- It could be possible to also get the ones like
|Sydney=
to also trigger the state image. I could probably add that in after I see how the state parameter ones are done. (I just need to see what the coding is first as I thought of 2 different ways to integrate the state parameter bit in) -- ThylacineHunter (talk) 00:32, 3 June 2023 (UTC)- I would prefer to be consistent. Perth and Canberra are special cases: they are the only two parameters that are specific to an area within a state or territory that also triggers the state/territory within which it lies - setting
|Perth=yes
also implicitly sets|WA=yes
even if that is omitted, and setting|Canberra=yes
also implicitly sets|ACT=yes
even if that is omitted. - If the combination of
|Sydney=yes
with|needs-photo=yes
is to trigger Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in New South Wales,|Sydney=yes
should also trigger WikiProject New South Wales. At the moment only|NSW=yes
and|nsw=yes
do that. Similarly for Adelaide, Brisbane and Melbourne (we don't have a task force for Hobart). That accounts for all bar one of the city-specific taskforces: so for completeness, Geelong should be considered too, being the only other city to have its own taskforce. - But for any of this, I do need to see consensus at WT:WikiProject Australia. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 08:58, 3 June 2023 (UTC)
- I can understand why Canberra is that way, but why is Perth? -- ThylacineHunter (talk) 09:17, 3 June 2023 (UTC)
- It goes back more than ten years, to this edit by MSGJ (talk · contribs) which was made per this discussion. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 14:18, 3 June 2023 (UTC)
- Interesting...
- It seems to be a forgotten remnant from 8 November 2012, back when Perth was still only a task force (didn't become a project until 12 October 2017) -- ThylacineHunter (talk) 14:57, 3 June 2023 (UTC)
- Any updates on a consensus for this? -- ThylacineHunter (talk) 01:58, 4 July 2023 (UTC)
- The actual sense of consensus there (the AWNB - notice board) or here - I suggest in the strongest sense that we forge ahead with getting this done - with many thanks to Redrose64 for the help in this matter JarrahTree 05:45, 5 July 2023 (UTC)

Future-Class
Is it possible to get "Future-Class" added to this? (unsure how to do that, otherwise I'd have added it to the sandbox)
It is used on the sister project "Australia road transport" and is needed for the Australian Transport subproject for future things like Melbourne Airport rail link, Suburban Rail Loop, Sydney Metro City & Southwest, Metro Tunnel, Inland Rail, Sydney Metro Western Sydney Airport, Sydney Metro West to name just a few. -- ThylacineHunter (talk) 10:50, 2 July 2023 (UTC)
- More information about the future-class...
- Criteria:
- A topic about which details are subject to change often.
- The article covers a future topic of which no broadcast version exists so far and all information is subject to change when new information arises from reliable sources. With multiple reliable sources, there might be information that contradicts other information in the same or other articles. Not all future categories will be rated with "Future" and may be rated like normal.
- Reader's experience:
- Amount of meaningful content varies over time as the projected event draws near.
- Editing suggestions:
- Material added might be speculation and should be carefully sourced.

- It's actually quite easy, there are two things to do (described later). But before these are done, we require consensus from the WikiProject as a whole, and not the request of one individual.
- Once consensus is obtained, the procedure is as follows. Edit Template:WikiProject Australia/class and add the parameter
|future=yes
, and save it. Seven message boxes will appear, containing text like "Some of the categories required do not currently exist, and need to be created". For each of the seven message boxes, click the "create" link and save the page without altering the contents of the edit box. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 18:59, 2 July 2023 (UTC)- I was hoping by posting this suggestion here to get some consensus on it. -- ThylacineHunter (talk) 01:57, 4 July 2023 (UTC)
- Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Australia has 195 watchers (23 of whom visited the page recently); this page has 41 watchers, of whom just two visited the page recently - you and me. So nobody else is likely to comment here. To obtain the consensus of any WikiProject, the talk page for that WikiProject is always the place to go. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 11:37, 4 July 2023 (UTC)
- point re responses so far - I would suggest the wider oz project has very few eds who are interested in the transport project - and those interested have actually come to this page - so while there is not unanimous consensus - you have here a particularly good sample of those interested in the transport project actually here on this page JarrahTree 06:04, 5 July 2023 (UTC)
- The request is to add Future-Class to the scale for WikiProject Australia, I don't see why the opinion of the transport people should carry any greater weight than anyone else. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 20:33, 5 July 2023 (UTC)

Seems like a solid idea. Would help in tracking these sorts of things. Maybe in addition, if necessary, some more categories for these sorts of articles too. Fork99 (talk) 05:40, 5 July 2023 (UTC)(edited 07:11, 5 July 2023 (UTC) by Fork99)- I oppose adding a future class to the template. I don't really see the point. Things that are opening in the future (Suburban Rail Loop as an example) can still be rated as a stub, start, B, GA class. Bypassing the whole article rating scheme for future projects seems weird. Steelkamp (talk) 05:53, 5 July 2023 (UTC)
- The nature of transport schemes or plans is that inherently many projects throughout wikipedia have to deal with the future and in some cases money and political issues keep the articles and subject stretching out in a correct tense. They have not been completed and should not deserve a currency that they do not belong to while in process. JarrahTree 05:59, 5 July 2023 (UTC)
- And yet Template:WikiProject Australian Roads uses Future-Class (as do most road WikiProjects) see Category:Future-Class Australia road transport articles. -- ThylacineHunter (talk) 06:06, 5 July 2023 (UTC)
- For example East West Link (Melbourne), WikiProject Australia rates it B-class while WikiProject Australian Roads rate it future-class. -- ThylacineHunter (talk) 06:12, 5 July 2023 (UTC)
- Would say no as its simply not a class scale. Moxy- 06:18, 5 July 2023 (UTC)
