Does anyone know to make mention of a Finnish translation of this template, without disrupting formatting on team pages this template is included on? See this tag below. Flibirigit 15:12, 14 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Templates and Template:CHL team

edit
(message to DMighton from ArglebargleIV)

Instead of creating a table for each of the teams you are editing, you should consider either using an existing infobox template or creating a new one. I can help with the template stuff if you wish. -- ArglebargleIV 16:01, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

My problem with building a template for ever team is that there is not enough variable from team to team if I need it... like southern ontario junior b team sometimes have parent and farm clubs... If the team has folded or gone on hiatus... then there is a problem with setting up years of operation on it... also... if the logo has a crappy bitrate... then I have to variate size... I've used the ones for the Canadian Hockey League in the past... and other leagues too... but I often have not found the right fit. DMighton 16:05, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

(Response) : I've had some experience with conditionals in templates, which could take care of most if not all of those problems. If you can give me a few examples of "problem" team articles, or ones that it's been difficult to fit possible standards to, I can take a shot at creating a composite conditional template over the next day or so that could be useful for all the articles. But don't let that stop you from adding your infoboxes, if what I had in mind works, they can be retrofitted. -- ArglebargleIV 16:11, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Alright... here are a few example of the many different leagues and issues I got here lol... Owen Sound Greys, Aguasabon River Rats, Bramalea Blues, St. Michael's Buzzers. These are just some of the variety... a cross section... ummm... here is the template used in the Canadian Hockey League... I've had problems with it in the past: Sarnia Sting. DMighton 16:17, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
(Response) OK, thanks, I'll take a look and get back to you. -- ArglebargleIV 16:53, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
If I may interject to save you both some work, Template:CHL team already has the necessary fields, and optional parameters. It could be tweaked if you need anything else. Flibirigit 17:14, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the note -- actually, that's the template I'm modifying a copy of, off on a temp page in my userspace. Once I get it down, and where it won't break anything else, I'll discuss copying my changes back over the CHL team template. -- ArglebargleIV 17:17, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Take a look at User:ArglebargleIV/testing team template. I used your examples in there, let me know what you think. -- ArglebargleIV 18:09, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've put together an extended and fully conditional version of Template:CHL team in my userspace, currently called User:ArglebargleIV/teamtemplate. Take a look at User:ArglebargleIV/testing team template. I used DMighton's examples in there, let me know what you think, and thanks for the advice!. -- ArglebargleIV 18:12, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Background Info

edit

I originally designed Template:CHL team for all teams in the Canadian Hockey League. At the time only Template:OHL team existed. and the QMJHL and WHL had only tables or no infobox. Devan and I chose to add "affiliates" to the box, but it needed to be optional. The "conference" field as also made optional for the QMJHL.

Since then, I've planned to make changes, but have not had much time. I'd like to add more optional fields to make the template applicable to defunct teams. Such fields are, "existence," "nhl affiliation" (which could be parent club) and so on. For examples, look at:

I'm comfortable adding these optional fields. I'd rather exclude the arena capacity and rink size. I just haven't had time to replace the text on over 100 teams.

A further project which I may not get to for a while is making Template:AHL team. Currently all those teams use tables. Flibirigit 19:02, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Implementation

edit

Well Flib, what do you think of it? DMighton 19:36, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'd like to implement it for every hockey team in Canada, professional leagues excluded for now. Flibirigit 19:43, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Alright... then lets do it... the ones I've been doing so far have been very "rag-tag"... let's clean it up. Is it set up to go now? Or are the kinks worked out yet? DMighton 19:49, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • I've implemented the changes worked on and suggested by ArglebargleIV, with the following changes:
    • Tean name is fixed as per article title.
    • League is a mandatory field.
    • City is a mandatory field.

LET'S UPDATE PAGES!! THANKS GUYS!! Flibirigit 20:20, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Other leagues?

edit

I've added capacity and ice size to my test version, but as optional sub-field of Home Arena -- take a look, if you like it I'll copy it over to CHL team template. -- ArglebargleIV 20:42, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'd rather leave it out, but if folks at Wikipedia:WikiProject Ice Hockey want it, then so be it. I'd also like to convince them that Template:CHL team is sufficient for American Hockey League teams. Thanks! Flibirigit 20:47, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Subnote: Ice size, Mascots and ticket prices were omitted from older templates due to cumbersome sizes, and questionable wikiworthiness. Flibirigit 21:15, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
I like those changes. I'll try to update some of the Jr A/Jr B teams as I have time. Resolute 20:57, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Incidentally, given that the scope of this template is being expanded to include other levels of junior hockey, and possibly even minor pro (which I would support), would it perhaps make sense to rename the template to something a little more generic? Resolute 23:40, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
It could be renamed, but then we have to change the text on every article its included on. Anyone have a robot? It could be called Template:Hockey team. Flibirigit 23:44, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Jason, can you help me... what is going on with the logo here: Oak Ridges Dynes. DMighton 07:16, 27 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
If you have a photo that is 131x129 pixels, it may not resolve well to the parameters at 125x124 pixels. Needs a greater change in size to display well. Flibirigit 07:58, 27 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Also, the team name in the infobox doesn't reflect the team name entered into the text -- See: Richmond Hill Rams (MetJHL). So, I've done all the related teams for the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League, Superior International Junior Hockey League, and Greater Metro Junior A Hockey League so far... DMighton 08:04, 27 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
You can add the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League to the done list. DMighton 10:51, 27 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
I changed the paramter for the title. If you do not enter a name.. the default will be the article title. For the cases that have a (bracketed suffix) you can enter a name without the bracket, ie. Richmond Hill Rams. Flibirigit 08:12, 27 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
I have only had time to update the Defunct QMJHL teams. Flibirigit 08:12, 27 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, not Richmond Hill... I meant Hamilton Red Wings Jr. A... I figured it out though... I was using the CHL Team Template... DMighton 08:18, 27 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ten franchise moves

I've changed this to allow up to ten franchise moves. -- ArglebargleIV 21:24, 20 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

German and french ling in every article, theat use this template

edit

Hi, i think ther is a mistake in this template. In every article with this template, there are links to the German and French template. I see both links at the end of the template, but i can´t find the link to the swedisch template, even so it is there. --Horge de (talk) 16:25, 14 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Nicknames

edit

Any opinions on having a section in the template for nicknames? Isaac Lin (talk) 23:06, 17 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Nicknames would be better suited to the article's introduction itself, with properly referenced sources. Flibirigit (talk) 14:03, 18 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
May I know why you feel this way? Is it due to the potential number of nicknames? Isaac Lin (talk) 02:42, 19 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
We recently removed the nickname field from the player infoboxes because it creates to much arguements and edit wars. As people start adding any nickname that a reporter used once to the box. It became pretty rediculous. So most people felt its better to just put nicknames in the article with a proper source. -Djsasso (talk) 14:49, 20 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Collapsing sections

edit

Are these strictly necessary? Do any instances of the template really need these sections to collapsed for some reason? Removing the collapsing functionality would allow for significant simplification of the template code. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 09:38, 29 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Now that these have been removed, I've been able to shave another thousand bytes off the code. Thanks, folks. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 18:25, 19 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

colours vs colors

edit

I have updated the code to allow for both |colors= and |colours=. if {{colors}} is used, it will using the label "colors", and if |colours= is used, it will use the label "colours". I will check all the transclusions for consistency in the next 24 hours. Frietjes (talk) 20:40, 3 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Disestablished parameter

edit

bsd. how about a disestablished date tag? --Ben Stone 01:50, 28 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Default image size problem

edit

It seems that the default image size is broken, if left blank, it defaults to the image's original size. I see 200px in the template, but i don't want to mess with it, templates are not my thing. Thanks --Ben Stone 01:48, 9 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Website parameter

edit

When editing an article using the "ice hockey team" infobox template, the "Website" parameter creates the message "Preview warning: Page using Template:Infobox hockey team with unknown parameter "website"". One issue is that use of the "website" parameter creates a waning message, the other issue is the warning message generated refers to the "Infobox hockey team", rather than the templates new name "Infobox ice hockey team". Championships/titles

edit

Stemming from some editing/discussion on the Saskatoon Blades page, I am looking for a bit of consensus around what is appropriate for inclusion in the infobox under the 'championship' or 'title' headings.

I think the main question is this: are division/conference titles meant to refer exclusively to either the regular season or the playoffs, given that they can apply to both? I'd welcome discussion on this and related points. Other justin (talk) 16:47, 14 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

NOTE: There is no mention of championships at Template:Infobox ice hockey team/doc. If consensus is reached, the document needs to be updated to reflect what to include. Flibirigit (talk) 16:57, 14 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
This is purely personal opinion, but I’ve always taken it to be that division titles are regular-season while conference titles are a playoff thing (unless, of course, there’s no conference playoffs a la the 2021 NHL season). The Kip 19:18, 16 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I would tend to agree. But here's an interesting case study: the Western Hockey League was for a long time organized in two divisions rather than conferences, but didn't have divisional playoffs; as such, there is no discernible "title" for making it to the championship final in those years, and a divisional title could refer only to the regular season. The league did institute divisional playoffs eventually, by which time a division title could refer to either a regular season or playoff title. Then, the league reorganized with conferences, so conference titles enter the equation. Now it's hard to know how to refer to things in an infobox historically, if that makes sense. Should these just not be included in the infobox if there are these sort of competing definitions? Other justin (talk) 15:53, 18 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
Are there any WP:RS regarding division and/or conference titles of the WHL? Maybe someone with access to certain websites could verify that? – sbaio 17:28, 19 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Junior captains

edit

I have a question arising from a spate of recent edits. User:Ptbopetesfan has removed the captains from a bunch of infoboxes for junior and major junior teams, often adding in the edit summary that a 'junior captain is not important enough to be included'. Is there actually any consensus on this? My inclination is that it's a reasonable inclusion, especially at the major junior level, but maybe this has been discussed or other folks feel differently. Other justin (talk) 04:49, 16 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Most players are not notable while playing in junior hockey, and do not pass WP:GNG. Those who are notable can be listed or mentioned elsewhere in the article, instead of adding more names to the infobox.MOS:INFOBOXPURPOSE states that it should summarize key facts, and that less information is more effective.
