Link to Serbia?!

For some reason this template links to Serbia for the national tennis teams. This is unacceptable. Both the Davis Cup team and Fed Cup team have their own articles, which are the ones which should be linked to. --Thewanderer (talk) 19:57, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

kingdom flag

The flag of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia is not commons:Image:Flag of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia (civil).svg but instead commons:Image:Flag of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.svg.

Somebody, as I see commons:User:R-41 have brought this distincion of (civil) / (state) in the commons which is not true. There was only one flag of the Kingdom according to the Constitution. It was a blue-white-red banner without any symbols appearing on it.

And what someone like R-41 would like everybody to belive that the false "state" flag exist's.

That flag is not the state flag but the naval ensign [1].

For the sake of correctness this change should be quick because R-41 changed the colours to look like on Flag of Serbia from the period of the Kingdom of Serbia.

Addition of alias

Well, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia article already explains this. The consitution from this period is also available on Serbian Wikisource. According to Article 1 of the constitution, "Službeni je naziv države: Kraljevina Srba, Hrvata i Slovenaca" which means "The official name of the state is: Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes". The term Yugoslavia is not found on this document at all (Serbian: Jugoslavija). This consitution was in effect until January of 1929 when the King pronounced it void and renamed the state soon after.

Also, as you can see here that upon renaming of the state, the same flag law was kept, so the two kingdoms had the same flag.--Thewanderer (talk) 23:41, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

WWII flag

Flag of the Democratic Federal Yugoslavia

The flag of the Democratic Federal Yugoslavia is not included, this is an error that should be amended. In late 1943, 1944, and 1945 occupied Yugoslavia existed as the Democratic Federal Yugoslavia, governmed (for most of that period) by the joint government formed out of the King's government-in-exile and the republican, left-wing AVNOJ, with Josip Broz Tito as the Prime Minister. The star on its flag was slightly different as is shown on the enclosed image. The 1945 flag with the larger red star was introduced only after the war was over. |FR variant

The YUG|FR variant seems only to change the flag, not the other data. See this edit for an example of the problem. It should really redirect to {{Country data FR Yugoslavia}}. • FR Yugoslavia is Serbia and Montenegro (see link), and not "really" a Yugoslav state. As things stand now, we have {{Country data FR Yugoslavia}}, {{Country data Serbia and Montenegro}}, and {{Country data Yugoslavia}} that sport the same flags. The FR Yugoslavia variant should be removed from this template, and {{Country data FR Yugoslavia}} should be deleted/redirected to {{Country data Serbia and Montenegro}}.
• We also have the issue of {{Country data SFR Yugoslavia}} and {{Country data Kingdom of Yugoslavia}}. They should both be merged into this template. Thus we would finally bring some order into this mess and have two templates instead of five ones uselessly sporting the same flags.
• The DF flag variant and the DF naval ensign are completely omitted from this template.
• Finally, I'd appreciate some help with this template. :) I'm trying to get the variants to link to the proper time period. The kingdom variants should link to the Kingdom of Yugoslavia article, while the default flag variants and the DF variants should link to the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia article - all the while the shortname should remain "Yugoslavia". Also, of course, the state flags and naval/war flags should also be inserted.

• • I did not notice before now that Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was no longer a standalone article, but now a redirect. But we cannot simply change all those instances to use the Serbia and Montenegro template; there are hundreds of pages (mostly sport-related results) that (correctly) use the name "Yugoslavia" to refer to the nation from the period 1992–2003, and that must somehow remain. For example, look at the icon next to Monica Seles name in 1993 Australian Open – Women's Singles.
  • {{Country data SFR Yugoslavia}} and {{Country data Kingdom of Yugoslavia}} are still required, because there are target articles at Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and Kingdom of Yugoslavia respectively. The basic "rule" is that we should use independent flag templates with a 1:1 correspondence to linked articles (with the alias value). If anything, the problem is with this template, not those ones, because we need to split this one, not merge it. Unless you want the article at Yugoslavia to be a merge of the three articles, then there is no reason for this flag template to encompass all time periods either. This template mostly exists because of the (thousands) of sport-related pages that use "YUG".
  • As for the DF flags, File:Naval ensign of DF Yugoslavia 1942.svg is not used in icon form anywhere, so does not need to be added here. For File:Yugoslav Partisans flag 1945.svg, this does seem like the best place to put an alias. Is "DF" the preferred variant name? Or "partisan"?
  • I think the best course forward would be to go through all the transclusions of this template and try to move them to the more specific kingdom, SFR, etc. versions. I'm assuming that you think the best result is if flag icons are linked to Kingdom of Yugoslavia, Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, and Serbia and Montenegro (including sometimes through the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia redirect), instead of linking to the Yugoslavia page? I've wanted to fix this mess for a while now, but since people aren't allowed to edit, and since its not easy to find someone willing to do the edits or provide assistance with it, it seems absolutely impossible to fix this appalling template jungle regarding Yugoslavia. The little notice box near the top of the template documentation page says it "is within the scope of WikiProject Flag Template", so you could have asked there first. • I understand, but the FR variant nevertheless must go. "{{flag|Yugoslavia|FR}}" links to Yugoslavia, which is very wrong. This may be an obscure bit of Balkans politics, but "Yugoslavia" (without the prefix "FR") refers almost exclusively to the 1918-1992 state (basically Kingdom of Yugoslavia + SFR Yugoslavia). The FR Yugoslavia was essentially Serbia and Montenegro, and only retained the name by almost default. In short, the article link is wrong.
  How could this be solved? In short, "{{flag|Yugoslavia|FR}}" should invariably look like this "FR Yugoslavia", or else its just plain wrong.
• All right, understood.
• The flag variant of DF Yugoslavia (1943-1945) should then be inserted into the {{Country data SFR Yugoslavia}} as well as here. "DF" is I think the best variant name. I believe, though, that the DF naval ensign could nevertheless be inserted as well for future use, if that's not in some way discouraged.
• The most important thing is that FR Yugoslavia does not link incorrectly to the main Yugoslavia article. The other two may link to the main article or they may not, its a question of context. I don't really feel strongly either way.

• I agree that the "FR" variant ought to go. I did a scan yesterday, and there are about 300 articles that need to be updated first, before we can make the change here (I will work on that), to change (for example) {{flagicon|YUG|FR}} to {{flagicon|FR Yugoslavia}}. The image will be the same, but the linked article (and mouseover text) will be Federal Republic of Yugoslavia instead of Yugoslavia. The only problem I found is the use of {{flagathlete}}, because the same "YUG" country code was used for both FR and SFR. I think I have a solution for that problem, though.

  But for the larger picture, I think the right thing to do would be to remove all the variants from this template, and make it a redirect to Template:Country data SFR Yugoslavia. Template:Country data YUG would also redirect there, instead of here. That would result in a better link for every flag template transclusion. In the end, nothing would link to the summary Yugoslavia article, but link to one of the three specific articles instead.

  So with that in mind, I think the "DF" variant ought to be added to Template:Country data SFR Yugoslavia. Between that and Template:Country data Kingdom of Yugoslavia, all necessary variants would be available. We only need to add images to country data templates if they are actually used in icon form elsewhere in Wikipedia; we don't need to turn an internal data container meta-template into an image gallery, and we don't want to increase the template size without good reason. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 18:39, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

The "FR Yugoslavia" issue has always been complicated. I suggest we simply use Serbia and Montenegro (and its country code) instead of FR Yugoslavia. Its important to remember that those two are one and the same practically identical state that changed its name (hence the merged article), and the last name was "Serbia and Montenegro". Therefore {{Country data FR Yugoslavia}} and {{Country data Serbia and Montenegro}} should probably be merged, i.e.: {{flag|Yugoslavia|FR}} and {{flag|FR Yugoslavia}} = Serbia and Montenegro.

Ideally, but I have no idea if its possible, an "FR" variant could be introduced to the Serbia and Montenegro template, i.e. "{{flag|Serbia and Montenegro|FR}}" could be made to look like this " FR Yugoslavia" (the flag would of course be the same, and the link would essentially be "[[Serbia and Montenegro|FR Yugoslavia]]").
If this is not doable, then I think the templates should be merged and "Serbia and Montenegro" should be used universally. (And anyway, FR Yugoslavia was called "Serbia and Montenegro" by the US for the vast majority of its existence, and was informally known under that name for all of it.) The articles are the same, after all.

As for the rest, agreed on all points. This template redirects to SFR Yugoslavia. {{Country data SFR Yugoslavia}} gets a "DF" variant instead of this template. No additional flags necessary. The issue is just that "{{flag|SFR Yugoslavia|DF}}" should definitely look like this " DF Yugoslavia".

(←deindent) Your suggested "ideal" solution actually isn't possible, but to do something similar is why the continued existence of Template:Country data FR Yugoslavia is necessary. The variant parameter (e.g. the previous use of "|FR") can only be used to select an alternate image, not an alternate link or display string. Those come from the alias value unique to each country data template, and from the template name, shortname alias (if present), etc. With this in mind, I believe it is necessary to have the FR Yugoslavia template for 1992–2003, so that the display name is accurate. For example, if you look at the flagicon next to Monica Seles name on 1993 Australian Open – Women's Singles, it says "Federal Republic of Yugoslavia", which is accurate for that time era. The only way to do that is by having that as the alias value in a template, which is what we have in Template:Country data FR Yugoslavia. If we merge that into Template:Country data Serbia and Montenegro, then the link and display text for the icon would be "Serbia and Montenegro", which is inaccurate for the time. It doesn't matter what the United States said from 1992–2003; most sports federations I know of called the nation "Yugoslavia" (with country code "YUG") during this time. So I think that the solution I'm working towards, taking advantage of the redirect from Federal Republic of Yugoslavia to Serbia and Montenegro, is the most appropriate, as it preserves the name used at the time.

Lastly, I should mention that if you want something to actually link to the DF Yugoslavia or Democratic Federal Yugoslavia redirects, then we need to create Template:Country data DF Yugoslavia. Specifying a "DF" variant can be used to select the alternate image, but not to change the link target or display text.
