Essential Commodities Reserves Act 1938
- ... that in the lead-up to the Second World War the British government stockpiled 100,000 tons of whale oil? Source: "The purpose of this 1938 Act was to enable the Board of Trade to maintain reserves of commodities which would be essential for the country in the event of war. According to Schedule 1 of the Act, essential commodities included food, fertilisers and petroleum. The Board of Trade started to accumulate its reserves of essential commodities before war broke out in September 1939. By the end of that year, around £6 million of stocks had been accumulated, including over 100,000 tons of whale oil and 180 tons of biscuits." from: "Statute Law Repeals: Twentieth Report Draft Statute Law (Repeals) Bill (pages 86-87)" (PDF). Overall: @Dumelow: Nice work. I think it may read more accurate as "more than 100,000 tons of whale oil", but that is a minor point as everything else is OK. Epicgenius (talk) 17:25, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
