Cooking manga
... that the increase in popularity of cooking manga in the 1980s has been linked to the Japanese asset price bubble? (Source: Food Culture in Japan)- ALT1:... that there have been nearly 1,000 manga series about cooking? (Source: Taste)

- @Morgan695: Looking at Food Culture in Japan, I see no mention of cooking mangas - the article links gourmets to the bubble, but not the manga to the gourmet (which is in the Continuum journal). This is not eligible for DYK due to WP:Synthesis. ALT1 I could verify, however it might need a bit of rewording ("nearly 1,000" in 2018 might just mean it would be past 1,000 by 2020). Otherwise, article is eligible in other criteria. Juxlos (talk) 20:00, 12 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Juxlos: Apologies, that was my own error in pulling the wrong source into the DYK template. The claim is substantiated by the article in Manga: An Anthology of Global and Cultural Perspectives (pg 110: "Japan’s gourmet boom of the 1980s likely provided the biggest push to the proliferation of gurume manga."). Because An Anthology of Global and Cultural Perspectives doesn't actually define what the "gourmet boom" was (I personally had never heard of it and had to look it up myself), the Food Culture in Japan source defines it as an phenomenon associated with the boom economy of the 1980s. (pg 26: "The 1980s were economic boom years in Japan, and the accompanying consumers’ rush to spend affected food consumption patterns as well […] The gourmet boom lasted several decades, and its echoes are still apparent.") I've revised the hook below:
- ALT2:... that popularity of cooking manga in the 1980s has been linked to so-called "gourmet boom", a phenomenon associated with the Japanese asset price bubble? (Source: Manga: An Anthology of Global and Cultural Perspectives)
- I'm fairly sure that any DYK hook needs to be taken from a single source and not inferred from multiple. I would be fine with a lightly modified ALT1 however. Juxlos (talk) 10:05, 13 December 2019 (UTC)
- I'm not seeing any specific guidance around that in WP:DYK or WP:DYKSG; D12 in WP:DYKSG actually states that "multiple sources are generally preferred." I also don't think ALT0 is making an inference; it would be an inference the hook said that the popularity of cooking manga caused the bubble economy, but the hook simply states that the genre rose in popularity due to the gourmet boom and then defines what the gourment boom is; I've listed alt hooks below regardless. As for ALT1, the source provided is the most recent information I can find, so guesses about how many series have been published as of 2020 would be WP:SPECULATION. - ALT2b:... that the popularity of cooking manga in the 1980s has been linked to the "gourmet boom", a period where access to luxury goods in Japan was widened? (Source: Manga: An Anthology of Global and Cultural Perspectives, Food Culture in Japan)
- ALT2c:... that the popularity of cooking manga in the 1980s has been linked to the "gourmet boom", a trend of the Japanese bubble economy that saw increased popularity of, and access to, luxury goods? (Source: Manga: An Anthology of Global and Cultural Perspectives, Food Culture in Japan)
- ALT2b is acceptable. Also "multiple sources" refer to a single statement, not creating a statement from two distinct statements in multiple sources. Juxlos (talk) 23:06, 13 December 2019 (UTC)
