Financial situation - more (RS) information needed
editThe issue was partly that the assets were valued at less than the loans raised to purchase them. More importantly in the short term the council was unable to service the debts. It's not clear from our article (or indeed from the citations I have read) what these shortfalls were, nor what the prognosis was. One of them cites the then leader saying that money had not been put aside over the previous 15 years. One cites a fall in the valuation of the assets by £600m. These are both informative but not enough. For example if the assets had been valued at £5bn, the fall would have been irrelevant to solvency. If they were already at or less than the value of the loans it might have been disastrous. But even this depends on the terms of the loans.
More information carefully curated could improve coverage of these matters substantially. All the best: Rich Farmbrough 12:11, 22 November 2024 (UTC).
