Describing her distinct style in a neutral way
editIs there some way we can describe her, well, unusual singing style in a neutral way? --Camembert
- Well, the samples I find on her website do not show a trace of the alleged "general disregard for such musical niceties as harmony, pitch and rhythm". Her timbre, pronunciation and musical interpretation skills are not spectacular, but pitch and rhythm are quite acceptable. I considered simply deleting this statement (which is patently incorrect as well as non-neutral) but that would leave the article with no description of her unusual singing style, as you aptly call it, which is clearly undesirable. I have no idea what to replace it with. EldKatt (Talk) 19:06, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
- Plus, it sounds more like she's doing bad karaoke versions of the songs she records (which aren't helping her either), rather than just using a synthesizer. Perhaps the whole article needs a once-over? Amnewsboy 07:02, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
--- What about changing the "with a general disregard for such musical niceties as harmony, pitch and rhythm" to something like "in her particular style"? Now, this: "Despite — or more accurately, because of — Wing's pronounced lack of vocal talent and marginal command of English diction, the recording proved a success" seems to me like an opinion, or one-sided information. "Lack of vocal talent" is not something I would add to this article, and "marginal command of English diction" seems like a comment coming from a presumption, which is not fair. Even if her English isn't accurate the whole time, her diction doesn't seem to be bad, and, listening to her samples, looks like it has improved. I think there could be a little clean up here. TetsuDC
- I agree. I think those statements are unfair and more personal opinion than anything else. Granted, she does not have the BEST singing voice, but I do admire her in her passion for music. Also, she sings English songs in a more traditional Chinese singing voice, which also adds to the unusualness of her sound. 141.211.222.132 02:07, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
Is this real or just something created by the makers of South Park?
re: Is this real or just something created by the makers of South Park? -- its very much real. I remember her being around before that south park episode
was she parodied in it, or actually in it? -- She was actually in it; she played a singer called Wing but that was pretty much where the biographical similarities ended!
Who cares is she "lacks articulation, pitch, and vibrato." Does 50 Cent or Daft Punk need those techniques to sell records? No. The only people who care to describe her music in this way are bitter, out-of-work singers. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.143.170.91 (talk) 03:54, 27 July 2009 (UTC)
Not only that, but if you actually listen, her pitch isn't spectacular - but it's there. And her vibrato is actually damn faaaaaahn!!! 188.107.33.92 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 13:52, 8 December 2010 (UTC).
The perceived weirdness of her voice (making it, to some, unlistenable or merely funny) is more a matter of style than of ineptness. Her vocal colouring, articulation, and very small and fast "fluttery" vibrato are 100% in the tradition of classical (operatic) Cantonese singing, and to these ears at least she's pretty good at that. Naturally, singing Anglo-American and Afro-American pop songs in this refined and highly artificial style borders on parody, just as much as Pavarotti belting out a pop tune in Italian operatic manner, or Cathy Berberian interpreting Beatles songs in the style of baroque arias. Those who have no listening experience in Chinese operatic music should not judge harshly against Ms. Wing. BTW: While pretty much unique today, her approach will be familiar to older Hongkongers at least from the recordings of Chan Po Chu, Nancy Sit or Siao Fong Fong "covering" UK and US pop tunes - if you have heard Siao Fong Fong singing Hank Williams' "My cheatin' heart" in Cantonese you will know what I mean.88.74.199.174 (talk) 10:14, 7 May 2011 (UTC)
Agreed... neutrality has its limmitations
editI had never heard about this singer before seeing the southpark episode, and following the URL www.wingmusic.co.nz at the start of the credits I was quite shocked to learn that she was a real singer.
Obviously, the fact that she was parodied so implies she a fairly untalented singer (or at the least, untalented but in an amusing way) but this article did very little to highlight the precise significance of this, rather I actually had to check the discussion section and read the comment Is there some way we can describe her, well, unusual singing style in a neutral way? before I fully understood the context.
I know wikipedia is supposed to maintain neutrality, but in this case such neutrality has compromised the informative capacity of this article and doesn’t quite explain the context of her fame and satire.
- Completely agree, this article gives no hint to the simple fact that she is in essence, not a normal singer (as in the conventional/popular sense of the term). Her apparent appeal (although i can see no appeal at all in it, can't see why people would want to listen to her music) is that she is amusing because she is so bad - this NEEDS to be conveyed in this article otherwise it is completely lacking in info.
- Her singing style isn't 'unusual', it isn't up for analysis in terms of pitch, harmony etc., her singing is rubbish, plain and simple. That is the point of her and why she is famous and thus this needs to be put in the article 86.27.188.13 (talk) 08:27, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
- The article can't call her "bad" or "rubbish," etc. That would violate WP:NPOV and a touch of WP:OR. If you can find reliable sources, such as a reputable music critic or music expert describing her as such, then the article could say something like "she has been described by so-and-so to be ..." and then cite those experts. -Seidenstud (talk) 16:01, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
- But surely a degree of common sense and consideration of social norms must be taken into account, otherwise this article just makes her sound like a regular singer which she clearly isn't. As others have pointed out, the NPOV rule in this instance limits the ability of the article to inform. 86.27.188.13 (talk) 17:55, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
- If it weren't for WP:BLP you might have a point. Look, if she's really that bad, then there must be a reliable source somewhere that says it. If not POV, then comparing her to social norms and making judgement is WP:OR -Seidenstud (talk) 18:53, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
- I'm not going to do the research myself, but a good way to add info that explains that many people who buy the music and attend the performances would be to look at quotes from advertisements for those cd's and performances. In other words, is the vocalist Wing promoted the same way as a Grammy-award nominee vocalist like Joss Stone? That could provide an objective way to communicate that Wing's attraction is one in the tradition of "novelty." Just a thought.
- What your suggesting sounds suspiciously like WP:OR to me which is not acceptable on wikipedia. Nil Einne (talk) 15:14, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
- No, it isn't at all and is in fact, a good idea. Even if it was, this is one place where it is not only OK but should be required. She's a bad singer and yet someone reading this article might think the opposite if they knew nothing about her. I know she's a nice lady but it should still be in here. 98.85.124.244 (talk) 16:58, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
Considering how bizarre her music do you think that she could be considered an outsider musician? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wooster84 (talk • contribs) 13:18, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
If WP:NPOV is limiting this articles ability to be an informative encyclopedic article then WP:IAR71.192.108.214 (talk) 03:21, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
Feel sorry for her
editi genuinely feel sorry for her. I wonder if she likes getting slaughtered because of her singing by... well basically everyone. To be honest she isn't AS bad as people make out she is, but i have to admit she needs to stop doing 'covers'. FireInMySoul 17:27, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
- I don't feel sorry for her. I'm listening to her now. She never ceases to put a smile on my face! She's sweet! LOVE those bum notes! lol --Pellet 02:57, 23 December 2006 (UTC)
profits
edit"She uses her own money to fund her albums, and although many of them have sold out, she has not yet made a profit."
Is this information correct? According to her homepage, some of her discs have indeed sold out, but I haven't found any information regarding profits from them.
- The listing shouldn't list any such transient information without a reference date. I suggest removing that detail. --Danorton 02:45, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
She stated on the Holmes TV show on Prime TV that she had yet to make a profit after giving a live performance. I'm not sure of the date, but I could dig up the video and find out.
Renaming?
editI'm not sure that renaming this is a good idea. Anyone searching for this is going to be looking for "Wing", not "Wing Tsang Han" - which nobody has ever heard of. If anything the latter should simply be a redirect. to "Wing (singer)". --Centauri 05:06, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
- Move to Wing (singer). AjaxSmack 02:40, 2 June 2006 (UTC)
- It needs to be moved. Madonna (entertainer) isn't titled "Madonna Ciccone".
Hoax?
editGuys, I've seen the SP episode, and I've seen the web site, and this really looks to me like the kind of thing that Matt and Trey would do as a gag. Are there any other sources on this?
- It's not a hoax. She is an authentic singer.
- I agree it is not a hoax I have seen her perform in the flesh you can do a youtube search for my videos of her. Very understandable how people could assume this though.
What's behind all this?
editWhen I browsed through Wing's homepage, I listend to her interpretation of "Dancing Queen". I couldn't help but notice that Trey and Matt used an original Sample of that song, sung by her. When I saw the Episode of Southpark, I thought it was a parody sung by Trey! Well, if you asked me, she is one h**l of a bad singer. In fact, I think she is the worst singer to ever produce an album. Is there really someone out there, who would listen to this? She has no feeling of rhythm, her voice is just awful and the quality of her production is extremely poor. Could somebody please investigate, why people buy her songs?
- Investigate? I didn't realise that singing badly was an indictable offense. You seem to be rather missing the point here. People buy her stuff because it's bad. --Centauri 22:12, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- Her site is linked to a couple of websites working as Quon Networks. Other sites on Quon include shittingontomcruise.com and donutassociationofamerica.org. I believe Trey and Matt found this semi-parody site and ran with it. Kinda like Troma films using Reverend Jen in one of their films. Gaviidae 13:51, 4 February 2007 (UTC)
unique=crappy? seriously, even the wierdest singers in America are recognized, and she is one crappy singer.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.132.181.242 (talk • contribs)
Videos
editThere are videos now on you tube. One, two. three, four. I don't think youtube links are ok in external links, but if they are, feel free to move them there. MeFi had a good description of Wing: "whenever I listen to her I smile from ear to ear -- both of which have delicate little streams blood trickling from them at the time." Isewell 01:22, 8 April 2007 (UTC)
- I wanna touch your hand will never sound the same again :) --Dyaa (talk) 00:10, 9 March 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry, I wanna hold your hand, I really couldn't concentrate while laughing that hard. Still, I feel sad for her! --Dyaa (talk) 00:12, 9 March 2010 (UTC)
GROSS POV
editI've just taken the liberty of cleaning up what I saw as a blatant violation of WP:NPOV as well as WP:BLP ([1]]). Before restoring any of the removed materials, please cite a reliable source, offering the criticism to which you'd like to refer. -Seidenstud 02:30, 27 April 2007 (UTC)
Partnership with Rappy McRapperson???
editI just recently found out that Wing is an actual internationally known singer, when I went and looked her up on iTunes. Prior to that I honestly thought she was some lady Rappy McRapperson met on the street somewhere and recorded songs with.
But regardless, I think it would be appropriate to mention this partnership with Lake Hills, WA nerdcore rapper Rappy McRapperson. Through his label, she has released a new EP, "Stop The Nonsense" which is also on iTunes.
Any thoughts? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.38.238.57 (talk) 15:16, 11 May 2010 (UTC)
Updated the official website link.
editThe link given, both in here and in an episode of South Park, was not correct. It kept coming up as an internal server error, or some such irritating nonsense. I was able to find the proper link, and have fixed it accordingly. Thursday, June 16, 2011.
Falsetto?
editThe voice she sings in isn't quite her real voice. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0w1T2-0yy0 You can hear the difference here. It's a bit like she's trying to sing in falsetto. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.75.170.110 (talk) 03:32, 2 June 2013 (UTC)
AC/DC replacement singer
editWas Wing considered as a possible replacement for Brian Johnson? 2605:A601:46D:B01:CABC:C8FF:FEA5:82F4 (talk) 16:49, 5 October 2016 (UTC)
