Inaccuracies
editLove the enthusiasm displayed re: Bill Poole. One cautionary note: this article seems to rely heavily on someone's original research, some of which is misleading. For example, Bill Poole was not a bareknuckle boxer, he was a street fighter. The New York Times, a Republic newspaper, was regularly cited throughout this wiki-page, while others like Democratic leaning New York Herald is entirely left out. Best bet is to revise based on Elliott J. Gorn's article "Good-Bye Boys, I Die a True American": Homicide, Nativism, and Working-Class Culture in Antebellum New York City," Journal of American History 74, no. 2 (1987), 288-410. - The inaccuracies here go far beyond that. Most of this article is sourced from Herbert Asbury's "Gangs of New York," which is essentially a work of fiction. Asbury did not cite his sources or even describe his methods of research and he wrote the book 70 years after many of the events described. There is literally no reason to believe anything in the book. Asbury did not realize that "Mose" was a character in a popular play, incorrectly stated that The Allen disappeared for good in the 1870s, did not understand that the Bowery Boys were not an organized gang, and failed to realize that "Dead Rabbits" were a derogatory nickname for a type of person rather than an actual organization. There are so many glaring things wrong with The Gangs of New York that it should never be cited as a source. JacksonJLanders (talk) 22:28, 12 October 2022 (UTC)

editIt should be noted that there is another William Poole. He is President of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis and now acting as a voting member of the interest rate setting Federal Open Market Committee in place of the recently retired Atlanta Fed president.—Preceding unsigned comment added by User:Kwikia (talk • contribs) 10:59, 17 November 2006

editThe use of quoted text should be removed and used to generate a more traditional article about this subject. --Lendorien 16:36, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
There is something wrong with all the years in this article, all of them are far too early. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.81.11.14 (talk) 23:44, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
Bill's last line in Gangs of New York is not, "Good-bye boys. I die a true American." It is "Thank God. I die a true American." —Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.120.14.39 (talk) 02:06, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
Is it worth noting that Bill the Butcher is depicted in Gangs of New York as a friend of Boss Tweed and Tamany Hall (at least for the first two thirds of the film), quite opposite to the political allegiance of William Poole?173.180.40.120 (talk) 19:52, 12 August 2013 (UTC)

Broken/Dated Links
editThe link in References to the Herbert Asbury website is broken - 500 error. I wasn't able to locate another "official" website for the author. Brutchersp (talk) 01:45, 19 May 2017 (UTC)
Lauren Macias
editThere is a big block text of the newspaper article, but with every bit of information, there's only a very brief part that even involves Poole. I would suggest maybe adding more about his life and what else he did with it, including his family that he has mentioned at the end.
Most of these subtitles include his involvement with other people, and it's more about them. Whoever did all this reviewing above knew more, but that's what I've looked at. Some of the links are broken, too. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Laurenmacias (talk • contribs) 05:37, 8 April 2019 (UTC)
Hannah Legacy- Review
editHello. I suggest adding more on Poole's early life if possible since there is only a small portion about that in this article. Just as Lauren said the article tends to somewhat focus on other people and their interactions with Poole. Changing this to focus on Poole instead of others would greatly help this article and would help the public understand who this man was. If it is known what criminal activities Poole committed when he was in the Washinton Street Gang and the Bowery Boys Gang then this could be added to the boxes on the right side of the article because that would be useful information. Overall, this article is a great work in progress. -Hannah Legacy — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hklegacy (talk • contribs) 18:51, 10 April 2019 (UTC)
