Place names are not determined by logical argument, and a port is not the same as a bay so the argument is false anyway. Official names are determined by government committees and popular names are determined by usage. I grew up in Melbourne for about 30 years and didn't realise that "Western Port Bay" is not the official name until I checked the claim here; that's how ubiquitous the popular name is. Actually it isn't "incorrect" and I'll change that to "unofficial". Both names are listed by the Australian Gazetteer so both are correct. However, "Western Port" is classified as "official" and "Western Port Bay" is classified as "historical". McKay (talk) 03:38, 22 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
