Cthulhu

I'm not sure if this is relevant enough for inclusion but the director confirms that the big monster is Cthulhu. Kelvingreen (talk) 19:17, 17 January 2020 (UTC)

It was clearly Cthulu and "The Deep Ones", the map/blueprint that Kristen Stewart finds in the Captain's Locker in the detour to the abandoned drilling station has Call of Cthulu symbols all over it. The camera even panned to it for like 30 seconds. Also, the faded biblical picture that Jessica Henwick stares at before they descend into the water is also clearly Cthulu being worshipped by his followers. The camera also panned to it for like 30 seconds. Then during the credits their are Cthulu symbols bouncing off the screen as they show news stories of the Drilling company classifying everything, and stating that they will begin drilling again, immediately. They never outright say its Cthulu in the film, because I think that would complicate things for the audience. If you understand Lovecraftian lore, then you understand what going on...if you do't, like most movie audience, then they are just random creatures that were released via corporate greed. Either interpretation is fine as it doesn't ruin the movie.

I'm not sure it's correct to present it as Cthulhu in the synopsis, though. The film doesn't use that name or any element of Lovecraft mythos, and there's no "based on characters created by" credit, so it feels more like an Easter egg from the creators, who used Cthulhu as a reference for their monster, so they consider it "a secret Lovecraft story". It's a meta-element, not an explicit in-universe element. I would put something like "a titanic deep-sea creature" and link to Cthulhu, and then reference the whole thing in the production section. --Kumagoro-42 (talk) 01:25, 22 June 2020 (UTC)
