The SS-292 was not the USS Devilfish mentioned in Herman Wouk's The Winds of War and War and Remembrance. For one, the SS-292 was not at Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack. Wouk mentions scores of real ships in prominent ways; the USS Devilfish was a fictional boat.
